$α$-SGHN: A Robust Model for Learning Particle Interactions in Lattice Systems

We propose an $α$-separable graph Hamiltonian network ($α$-SGHN) that reveals complex interaction patterns between particles in lattice systems. Utilizing trajectory data, $α$-SGHN infers potential interactions without prior knowledge about particle coupling, overcoming the limitations of traditional graph neural networks that require predefined links. Furthermore, $α$-SGHN preserves all conservation laws during trajectory prediction. Experimental results demonstrate that our model, incorporating structural information, outperforms baseline models based on conventional neural networks in predicting lattice systems. We anticipate that the results presented will be applicable beyond the specific onsite and inter-site interaction lattices studied, including the Frenkel-Kontorova model, the rotator lattice, and the Toda lattice.

Resonant modal approximation of time-domain elastic scattering from nano-bubbles in elastic materials

This paper is devoted to establishing the resonant modal expansion of the low-frequency part of the scattered field for acoustic bubbles embedded in elastic materials in the time domain. Due to the nano-bubble with damping, Minnaert resonance can be induced at certain discrete resonant frequencies, which forms the fundamental basis of effectively constructing elastic metamaterials via the composite material theory. There are two major contributions in this work. First, we ansatz a special form of the density, approximate the incident field with a finite number of modes, and then obtain an expansion with a finite number of modes for the acoustic-elastic wave scattering in the time-harmonic regime. Second, we show that the low-frequency part of the scattered field in the time domain can be well approximated by using the resonant modal expansion with sharp error estimates. Interestingly, we find that the $0$-th mode is the main contribution to the resonant modal expansion.

Stability for Time-domain Elastic Wave Equations

This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering problem involving the time-domain elastic wave equations in a bounded $d$-dimensional domain. First, an explicit reconstruction formula for the density is established by means of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. The reconstruction is mainly based on the modified boundary control method and complex geometric optics solutions for the elastic wave. Next, the stable observability is obtained by a Carleman estimate. Finally, the stability for the density is presented by the connect operator.

On an inverse problem for the plate equation with passive measurement

This paper focuses on an inverse problem associated with the plate equation which is derived from models in fluid mechanics and elasticity. We establish the unique identifying results in simultaneously determining both the unknown density and internal sources from passive boundary measurement. The proof mainly relies on the asymptotic analysis and harmonic analysis on integral transforms

KAM Theorems for Multi-scale Torus

In present paper, from the viewpoint of physical intuition we introduce a Hamiltonian system with multiscale rotation, which describes many systems, for example, the forced pendulum with fast rotation, weakly coupled $N$-oscillators with quasiperiodic force and so on. We study the persistence of invariant tori for this Hamiltonian system, and establish some KAM type results including the isoenergetic type. As consequences, we can show that Boltzmann's ergodicity hypothesis is also not true for this Hamiltonian system.

Analysis of the Spatio-temporal Dynamics of COVID-19 in Massachusetts via Spectral Graph Wavelet Theory

The rapid spread of COVID-19 disease has had a significant impact on the world. In this paper, we study COVID-19 data interpretation and visualization using open-data sources for 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts from December 6, 2020 to September 25, 2021. Because cities are embedded in rather complex transportation networks, we construct the spatio-temporal dynamic graph model, in which the graph attention neural network is utilized as a deep learning method to learn the pandemic transition probability among major cities in Massachusetts. Using the spectral graph wavelet transform (SGWT), we process the COVID-19 data on the dynamic graph, which enables us to design effective tools to analyze and detect spatio-temporal patterns in the pandemic spreading. We design a new node classification method, which effectively identifies the anomaly cities based on spectral graph wavelet coefficients. It can assist administrations or public health organizations in monitoring the spread of the pandemic and developing preventive measures. Unlike most work focusing on the evolution of confirmed cases over time, we focus on the spatio-temporal patterns of pandemic evolution among cities. Through the data analysis and visualization, a better understanding of the epidemiological development at the city level is obtained and can be helpful with city-specific surveillance.

Modal approximation for time-domain elastic scattering from metamaterial quasiparticles

This paper aims at quantitatively understanding the elastic wave scattering due to negative metamaterial structures under wide-band signals in the time domain. Specifically, we establish the modal expansion for the time-dependent field scattered by metamaterial quasiparticles in elastodynamics. By Fourier transform, we first analyze the modal expansion in the time-harmonic regime. With the presence of quasiparticles, we validate such an expansion in the static regime via quantitatively analyzing the spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator associated with the elastostatic system. We then approximate the incident field with a finite number of modes and apply perturbation theory to obtain such an expansion in the perturbative regime. In addition, we give polariton resonances as simple poles for the elastic system with non-zero frequency. Finally, we show that the low-frequency part of the scattered field in the time domain can be well approximated by using the resonant modal expansion with sharp error estimates.

Well-posedness for good Boussinesq equations subject to quasi-periodic initial data

This paper concerns the local well-posedness for the "good" Boussinesq equation subject to quasi-periodic initial conditions. By constructing a delicately and subtly iterative process together with an explicit combinatorial analysis, we show that there exists a unique solution for such a model in a small region of time. The size of this region depends on both the given data and the frequency vector involved. Moreover the local solution has an expansion with exponentially decaying Fourier coefficients.

Quasi-periodic travelling waves for a class of damped beams on rectangular tori

This article concerns a class of beam equations with damping on rectangular tori. When the generators satisfy certain relationship, by excluding some value of two model parameters, we prove that such models admit small amplitude quasi-periodic travelling wave solutions with two frequencies, which are continuations of two rotating wave solutions with one frequency. This result holds not only for an isotropic torus, but also for an anisotropic torus. The proof is mainly based on a Lyapunov--Schmidt reduction together with the implicit function theorem.

Response solutions for wave equations with variable wave speed and periodic forcing

We consider a model of nonlinear wave equations with periodically varying wave speed and periodic external forcing. By imposing non-resonance conditions on the frequency, we establish the existence of the response solutions (i.e., periodic solutions with the same frequency as the forcing) for such a model in a Cantor set of asymptotically full measure. The proof relies on a Lyapunov--Schmidt reduction together with the Nash--Moser iteration.

Analysis of Time-domain Electromagnetic Scattering Problem by Multiple Cavities

Consider the time-domain multiple cavity scattering problem, which arises in diverse scientific areas and has significant industrial and military applications. The multiple cavity embedded in an infinite ground plane, is filled with inhomogeneous media characterized by variable dielectric permittivities and magnetic permeabilities. Corresponding to the transverse electric or magnetic polarization, the scattering problem can be studied for the Helmholtz equation in frequency domain and wave equation in time-domain, respectively. A novel transparent boundary condition in time-domain is developed to reformulate the cavity scattering problem into an initial-boundary value problem in a bounded domain. The well-posedness and stability are established for the reduced problem. Moreover, a priori estimates for the electric field is obtained with a minimum requirement for the data by directly studying the wave equation.

Periodic Solutions to Nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli Beam Equations

Bending vibrations of thin beams and plates may be described by nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli beam equations with $x$-dependent coefficients. In this paper we investigate existence of families of time-periodic solutions to such a model using Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction and a differentiable Nash-Moser iteration scheme. The results hold for all parameters $(ε,ω)$ in a Cantor set with asymptotically full measure as $ε\rightarrow0$.

The Existence of Periodic Solutions for Nonlinear Beam Equations on $\mathbb T^d$ by a Para-differential Method

This paper focuses on the construction of periodic solutions of nonlinear beam equations on the $d$-dimensional tori. For a large set of frequencies, we demonstrate that an equivalent form of the nonlinear equations can be obtained by a para-differential conjugation. Given the non-resonant conditions on each finite dimensional subspaces, it is shown that the periodic solutions can be constructed for the block diagonal equation by a classical iteration scheme.

Electromagnetic field enhancement in a subwavelength rectangular open cavity

Consider the transverse magnetic polarization of the electromagnetic scattering of a plane wave by a perfectly conducting plane surface, which contains a two-dimensional subwavelength rectangular cavity. The enhancement is investigated fully for the electric and magnetic fields arising in such an interaction. The cavity wall is assumed to be a perfect electric conductor, while the cavity bottom is allowed to be either a perfect electric conductor or a perfect magnetic conductor. We show that the significant field enhancement may be achieved in both nonresonant and resonant regimes. The proofs are based on variational approaches, layer potential techniques, boundary integral equations, and asymptotic analysis. Numerical experiments are also presented to confirm the theoretical findings.

Quasi-periodic solutions to nonlinear beam equation on Compact Lie Groups with a multiplicative potential

The goal of this work is to study the existence of quasi-periodic solutions in time to nonlinear beam equations with a multiplicative potential. The nonlinearities are required to only finitely differentiable and the frequency is along a pre-assigned direction. The result holds on any compact Lie group or homogenous manifold with respect to a compact Lie group, which includes the standard torus $\mathbf{T}^{d}$, the special orthogonal group $SO(d)$, the special unitary group $SU(d)$, the spheres $S^d$ and the real and complex Grassmannians. The proof is based on a differentiable Nash-Moser iteration scheme.

Analysis of Transient Acoustic-Elastic Interaction in an Unbounded Structure

Consider the wave propagation in a two-layered medium consisting of a homogeneous compressible air or fluid on top of a homogeneous isotropic elastic solid. The interface between the two layers is assumed to be an unbounded rough surface. This paper concerns the time-domain analysis of such an acoustic-elastic interaction problem in an unbounded structure in three dimensions. Using an exact transparent boundary condition and suitable interface conditions, we study an initial-boundary value problem for the coupling of the Helmholtz equation and the Navier equation. The well-posedness and stability are established for the reduced problem. Our proof is based on the method of energy, the Lax--Milgram lemma, and the inversion theorem of the Laplace transform. Moreover, a priori estimates with explicit dependence on the time are achieved for the quantities of acoustic pressure and elastic displacement by taking special test functions for the time-domain variational problem.

An exact transparent boundary condition is developed to reformulate the scattering problem into an initial-boundary value problem in an infinite rectangular slab. The well-posedness and stability are established for the reduced problem. Our proof is based on the method of energy, the Lax--Milgram lemma, and the inversion theorem of the Laplace transform. Moreover, a priori estimates with explicit dependence on the time are achieved for the electric field by directly studying the time-domain Maxwell equations.
