Entropic Rigidity in Quantum Memories: How Geometry and Algebra Control the Onset of Degeneracy Corrections

Maximum-probability (MP) decoding selects the most probable microscopic error, whereas degenerate maximum-likelihood (MLD) decoding includes the configurational entropy of an entire logical sector. Using code-capacity Pauli noise to isolate rigidity intrinsic to the code, we determine the first physical error weight $m$ at which their logical winner sets become disjoint, even under optimal MP tie resolution. Code distance imposes the universal bound $m\geq h=\lceil d/2\rceil$. We define the entropic rigidity depth $r$ through $m=h+r$ and certify a three-level hierarchy: $r=0$ for planar surface codes and two concatenated families, $r=1$ for odd-distance square toric codes and the Gross $[[144,12,12]]$ quantum low-density-parity-check code, and $r=2$ for a separable family with hypergraph product and bivariate bicycle descriptions. The onset fixes the leading operational failure gap, proportional to the $m$th power of the physical noise strength. Geometry and algebra therefore provide quantifiable controls of configurational entropy and an exact benchmark for low-noise decoder selection.

Search for a solar-bound axion halo using the Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches

We report on a search for a gravitationally bound solar axion halo using data from the Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME), a worldwide array of magnetically shielded atomic magnetometers with sensitivity to exotic spin couplings. Motivated by recent theoretical work suggesting that self-interacting ultralight axions can be captured by the Sun's gravitational field and thermalize into the ground state, we develop a signal model for the pseudo-magnetic fields generated by axion-proton gradient couplings in such a halo. The analysis focuses on the fifth GNOME Science Run (69 days, 12 stations), employing a cross-correlation pipeline with time-shifted daily modulation templates to search for the global, direction-dependent, monochromatic signal expected from a solar axion halo. No statistically significant candidate signals are observed. We set 95% confidence-level upper limits on the amplitude of the axion-induced pseudo-magnetic field over the frequency range $\approx 0.05-20$ Hz, translating to constraints on the linear and quadratic axion-proton couplings for halo densities predicted by gravitational capture models and for the maximum overdensities allowed by planetary ephemerides. In the quadratic coupling case, our limits surpass existing astrophysical bounds by over two orders of magnitude across much of the accessible parameter space.

MCCD: A Multi-Attribute Chinese Calligraphy Character Dataset Annotated with Script Styles, Dynasties, and Calligraphers

Research on the attribute information of calligraphy, such as styles, dynasties, and calligraphers, holds significant cultural and historical value. However, the styles of Chinese calligraphy characters have evolved dramatically through different dynasties and the unique touches of calligraphers, making it highly challenging to accurately recognize these different characters and their attributes. Furthermore, existing calligraphic datasets are extremely scarce, and most provide only character-level annotations without additional attribute information. This limitation has significantly hindered the in-depth study of Chinese calligraphy. To fill this gap, we present a novel Multi-Attribute Chinese Calligraphy Character Dataset (MCCD). The dataset encompasses 7,765 categories with a total of 329,715 isolated image samples of Chinese calligraphy characters, and three additional subsets were extracted based on the attribute labeling of the three types of script styles (10 types), dynasties (15 periods) and calligraphers (142 individuals). The rich multi-attribute annotations render MCCD well-suited diverse research tasks, including calligraphic character recognition, writer identification, and evolutionary studies of Chinese characters. We establish benchmark performance through single-task and multi-task recognition experiments across MCCD and all of its subsets. The experimental results demonstrate that the complexity of the stroke structure of the calligraphic characters, and the interplay between their different attributes, leading to a substantial increase in the difficulty of accurate recognition. MCCD not only fills a void in the availability of detailed calligraphy datasets but also provides valuable resources for advancing research in Chinese calligraphy and fostering advancements in multiple fields. The dataset is available at https://github.com/SCUT-DLVCLab/MCCD.

Response of Comagnetometer to Exotic Spin-Dependent Couplings

Comagnetometers offer unique advantages in measuring exotic spin-dependent interactions by suppressing magnetic noise. Understanding the frequency response to exotic interactions is essential for evaluating and improving the sensitivity of comagnetometers, as the signals often exhibit distinct spectral features. We conduct theoretical and experimental studies on the frequency response of a differential comagnetometer. We derive analytical expressions for the frequency response of the differential comagnetometer to both magnetic field and exotic couplings, along with the conversion relationship between them. Based on this, we revise the method for determining the axion-nucleon coupling strength with comagnetometers. Furthermore, we introduce a light-shift-based calibration protocol to verify the response to exotic interactions. This work helps predict the sensitivity of comagnetometers in detecting exotic fields and advances the exploration of dark matter.

MegaHan97K: A Large-Scale Dataset for Mega-Category Chinese Character Recognition with over 97K Categories

Foundational to the Chinese language and culture, Chinese characters encompass extraordinarily extensive and ever-expanding categories, with the latest Chinese GB18030-2022 standard containing 87,887 categories. The accurate recognition of this vast number of characters, termed mega-category recognition, presents a formidable yet crucial challenge for cultural heritage preservation and digital applications. Despite significant advances in Optical Character Recognition (OCR), mega-category recognition remains unexplored due to the absence of comprehensive datasets, with the largest existing dataset containing merely 16,151 categories. To bridge this critical gap, we introduce MegaHan97K, a mega-category, large-scale dataset covering an unprecedented 97,455 categories of Chinese characters. Our work offers three major contributions: (1) MegaHan97K is the first dataset to fully support the latest GB18030-2022 standard, providing at least six times more categories than existing datasets; (2) It effectively addresses the long-tail distribution problem by providing balanced samples across all categories through its three distinct subsets: handwritten, historical and synthetic subsets; (3) Comprehensive benchmarking experiments reveal new challenges in mega-category scenarios, including increased storage demands, morphologically similar character recognition, and zero-shot learning difficulties, while also unlocking substantial opportunities for future research. To the best of our knowledge, the MetaHan97K is likely the dataset with the largest classes not only in the field of OCR but may also in the broader domain of pattern recognition. The dataset is available at https://github.com/SCUT-DLVCLab/MegaHan97K.

Experimental demonstration of generalized quantum fluctuation theorems in the presence of coherence

Fluctuation theorems have elevated the second law of thermodynamics to a statistical realm by establishing a connection between time-forward and time-reversal probabilities, providing invaluable insight into nonequilibrium dynamics. While well established in classical systems, their quantum generalization, incorporating coherence and the diversity of quantum noise, remains open. We report the experimental validation of a quantum fluctuation theorem (QFT) in a photonic system, applicable to general quantum processes with nonclassical characteristics, including quasi-probabilistic descriptions of entropy production and multiple time-reversal processes. Our experiment confirms that the ratio between the quasi-probabilities of the time-forward and any multiple time-reversal processes obeys a generalized Crooks QFT. Moreover, coherence induced by a quantum process leads to the imaginary components of quantum entropy production, governing the phase factor in the QFT. These findings underscore the fundamental symmetry between a general quantum process and its time reversal, providing an elementary toolkit to explore noisy quantum information processing.

ViT-LSLA: Vision Transformer with Light Self-Limited-Attention

Transformers have demonstrated a competitive performance across a wide range of vision tasks, while it is very expensive to compute the global self-attention. Many methods limit the range of attention within a local window to reduce computation complexity. However, their approaches cannot save the number of parameters; meanwhile, the self-attention and inner position bias (inside the softmax function) cause each query to focus on similar and close patches. Consequently, this paper presents a light self-limited-attention (LSLA) consisting of a light self-attention mechanism (LSA) to save the computation cost and the number of parameters, and a self-limited-attention mechanism (SLA) to improve the performance. Firstly, the LSA replaces the K (Key) and V (Value) of self-attention with the X(origin input). Applying it in vision Transformers which have encoder architecture and self-attention mechanism, can simplify the computation. Secondly, the SLA has a positional information module and a limited-attention module. The former contains a dynamic scale and an inner position bias to adjust the distribution of the self-attention scores and enhance the positional information. The latter uses an outer position bias after the softmax function to limit some large values of attention weights. Finally, a hierarchical Vision Transformer with Light self-Limited-attention (ViT-LSLA) is presented. The experiments show that ViT-LSLA achieves 71.6% top-1 accuracy on IP102 (2.4% absolute improvement of Swin-T); 87.2% top-1 accuracy on Mini-ImageNet (3.7% absolute improvement of Swin-T). Furthermore, it greatly reduces FLOPs (3.5GFLOPs vs. 4.5GFLOPs of Swin-T) and parameters (18.9M vs. 27.6M of Swin-T).

Age-Optimal UAV Scheduling for Data Collectionwith Battery Recharging

We study route scheduling of a UAV for data collec-tion from remote sensor nodes (SNs) with battery recharging. Thefreshness of the collected information is captured by the metric ofage of information (AoI). The objective is to minimize the averageAoI cost of all SNs over a scheduling time horizon. We prove thatthe problem is NP-hard via a reduction from the Hamiltonianpath. Next, we prove tractability of the problem for a symmetricscenario. For problem solving, we develop an algorithm based ongraph labeling. Finally, we show the effectiveness of our algorithmin comparison to greedy scheduling.
