Poverty Mapping: Data, Models and Applications

Poverty mapping is increasingly important for monitoring Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. Yet timely and fine-resolution poverty estimation remains difficult because conventional census- and survey-based approaches are costly, infrequent, and often sparse precisely where deprivation is most severe. As poverty emerges from complex socioeconomic systems shaped by human mobility, social interactions, infrastructure, and economic activities, emerging computational methods and nontraditional data sources have created new opportunities for poverty estimation and mapping. At the intersection of statistical physics, complex systems science, and data science, these approaches enable poverty estimation at finer spatial and temporal resolutions. This review summarizes the main concepts of poverty and the principal frameworks used to measure it, and examines recent advances on poverty estimation and mapping using satellite imagery, mobile phone data, social media data, and multisource data fusion. The review also discusses persistent challenges related to representativeness, transferability across regions, interpretability, and uncertainty quantification. Finally, the review clarifies both the analytical promise and the practical limits of contemporary poverty mapping.

Opinion Dynamics on Complex Networks

Social media has emerged as a significant source of information for people. As agents interact with each other through social media platforms, they create numerous complex social networks. Within these networks, information spread among agents and their opinions may be altered by their neighbors' influence. This paper explores opinion dynamics on social networks, which are influenced by complex network structure, confirmation bias, and specific issues discussed. We propose a novel model based on previous models to simulate how public opinion evolves from consensus to radicalization and to polarization. We also analyze how agents change their stance under their neighbors' impact. Our model reveals the emergence of opinion groups and shows how different factors affect opinion dynamics. This paper contributes to the understanding of opinion dynamics on social networks and their possible applications in finance, marketing, politics, and social media.

Evolution of magnetism in cerium doped LaCo2P2 crystals: a magnetic phase diagram

ThCr2Si2-type phosphide ACo2P2 (A=Rare earth elements) has the same structure as iron arsenides, but their magnetic behaviors are quite distinct. In this paper, we for the first time grew a series of La1-xCexCo2P2 single crystals (x=0.0 to1.0), and made structural and magnetic characterizations. This allows us to carry out a careful investigation on the evolution of magnetism with cerium content and build a magnetic phase diagram. We found that the introduction of cerium induces a rapid decrease of c-axis and a change from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) states. By employing first-principles band-structure calculations, we identify the formation of P-P bonding with the shortening of c-axis, which effectively drives an increase of AFM interaction and eventually leads to AFM ordering in the high doping region. The present study may shed light on the interplay between the structural collapsing and electronic/magnetic properties in 122 iron pnictides.
