RIS-aided Single-frequency 3D Imaging by Exploiting Multi-view Image Correlations

Retrieving range information in three-dimensional (3D) radio imaging is particularly challenging due to the limited communication bandwidth and pilot resources. To address this issue, we consider a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided uplink communication scenario, generating multiple measurements through RIS phase adjustment. This study successfully realizes 3D single-frequency imaging by exploiting the near-field multi-view image correlations deduced from user mobility. We first highlight the significance of considering anisotropy in multi-view image formation by investigating radar cross-section properties and diffraction resolution limits. We then propose a novel model for joint multi-view 3D imaging that incorporates occlusion effects and anisotropic scattering. These factors lead to slow image support variation and smooth coefficient evolution, which are mathematically modeled as Markov processes. Based on this model, we employ the Expectation Maximization-Turbo-Generalized Approximate Message Passing algorithm for joint multi-view single-frequency 3D imaging with limited measurements. Simulation results reveal the superiority of joint multi-view imaging in terms of enhanced imaging ranges, accuracies, and anisotropy characterization compared to single-view imaging. Combining adjacent observations for joint multi-view imaging enables a reduction in the measurement overhead by 80%.

Latent Space Planning for Multi-Object Manipulation with Environment-Aware Relational Classifiers

Objects rarely sit in isolation in everyday human environments. If we want robots to operate and perform tasks in our human environments, they must understand how the objects they manipulate will interact with structural elements of the environment for all but the simplest of tasks. As such, we'd like our robots to reason about how multiple objects and environmental elements relate to one another and how those relations may change as the robot interacts with the world. We examine the problem of predicting inter-object and object-environment relations between previously unseen objects and novel environments purely from partial-view point clouds. Our approach enables robots to plan and execute sequences to complete multi-object manipulation tasks defined from logical relations. This removes the burden of providing explicit, continuous object states as goals to the robot. We explore several different neural network architectures for this task. We find the best performing model to be a novel transformer-based neural network that both predicts object-environment relations and learns a latent-space dynamics function. We achieve reliable sim-to-real transfer without any fine-tuning. Our experiments show that our model understands how changes in observed environmental geometry relate to semantic relations between objects. Joint Range-Velocity-Azimuth Estimation for OFDM-Based Integrated Sensing and Communication

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is promising for future sixth-generation mobile communication systems. Existing works focus on the joint estimation of the targets' range and velocity for OFDM-based ISAC systems. In contrast, this paper studies the three-dimensional joint estimation (3DJE) of range, velocity, and azimuth for OFDM-based ISAC systems with multiple receive antennas. First, we establish the signal model and derive the Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) on the 3DJE. Furthermore, an auto-paired super-resolution 3DJE algorithm is proposed by exploiting the reconstructed observation sub-signal's translational invariance property in the time, frequency, and space domains. Finally, with the 5G New Radio parameter setup, simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better estimation performance and its root mean square error is closer to the root of CRBs than existing methods.

Native spaces and generalization of Wu functions

We prove that the native space of a Wu function is a dense subspace of a Sobolev space. An explicit characterization of the native spaces of Wu functions is given. Three definitions of Wu functions are introduced and proven to be equivalent. Based on these new equivalent definitions and the so called $f$-form tricks, we can generalize the Wu functions into the even-dimensional spaces $\R^{2k}$, while the original Wu functions are only defined in the odd-dimensional spaces $\R^{2k+1}$. Such functions in even-dimensional spaces are referred to as the `missing Wu functions'. Furthermore we can generalize the Wu functions into `fractional'-dimensional spaces. We call all these Wu functions the generalized Wu functions. The closed form of the generalized Wu functions are given in terms of hypergeometric functions. Finally we prove that the Wu functions and the missing Wu functions can be written as linear combinations of the generalized Wendland functions.

Theory of defect-induced crystal field perturbations in rare earth magnets

We present a theory describing the single-ion anisotropy of rare earth (RE) magnets in the presence of point defects. Taking the RE-lean 1:12 magnet class as a prototype, we use first-principles calculations to show how the introduction of Ti substitutions into SmFe$_{12}$ perturbs the crystal field, generating new coefficients due to the lower symmetry of the RE environment. We then demonstrate that these perturbations can be described extremely efficiently using a screened point charge model. We provide analytical expressions for the anisotropy energy which can be straightforwardly implemented in atomistic spin dynamics simulations, meaning that such simulations can be carried out for an arbitrary arrangement of point defects. The significant crystal field perturbations calculated here demonstrate that a sample which is single-phase from a structural point of view can nonetheless have a dramatically varying anisotropy profile at the atomistic level if there is compositional disorder, which may influence localized magnetic objects like domain walls or skyrmions.

Suboptimal subspace construction for log-determinant approximation

Variance reduction is a crucial idea for Monte Carlo simulation and the stochastic Lanczos quadrature method is a dedicated method to approximate the trace of a matrix function. Inspired by their advantages, we combine these two techniques to approximate the log-determinant of large-scale symmetric positive definite matrices. Key questions to be answered for such a method are how to construct or choose an appropriate projection subspace and derive guaranteed theoretical analysis. This paper applies some probabilistic approaches including the projection-cost-preserving sketch and matrix concentration inequalities to construct a suboptimal subspace. Furthermore, we provide some insights on choosing design parameters in the underlying algorithm by deriving corresponding approximation error and probabilistic error estimations. Numerical experiments demonstrate our method's effectiveness and illustrate the quality of the derived error bounds.

Joint Localization and Environment Sensing by Harnessing NLOS Components in RIS-aided mmWave Communication Systems

This study explores the use of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) components in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems for joint localization and environment sensing. The radar cross section (RCS) of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is calculated to develop a general path gain model for RISs and traditional scatterers. The results show that RISs have a greater potential to assist in localization due to their ability to maintain high RCSs and create strong NLOS links. A one-stage linear weighted least squares estimator is proposed to simultaneously determine user equipment (UE) locations, velocities, and scatterer (or RIS) locations using line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS paths. The estimator supports environment sensing and UE localization even using only NLOS paths. A second-stage estimator is also introduced to improve environment sensing accuracy by considering the nonlinear relationship between UE and scatterer locations. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimators in rich scattering environments and the benefits of using NLOS paths for improving UE location accuracy and assisting in environment sensing. The effects of RIS number, size, and deployment on localization performance are also analyzed.

Quantum Phase Diagram and Spontaneously Emergent Topological Chiral Superconductivity in Doped Triangular-Lattice Mott Insulators

The topological superconducting state is a highly sought-after quantum state hosting topological order and Majorana excitations. In this work, we explore the mechanism to realize the topological superconductivity (TSC) in the doped Mott insulators with time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Through large-scale density matrix renormalization group study of an extended triangular-lattice $t$-$J$ model on the six- and eight-leg cylinders, we identify a $d+id$-wave chiral TSC with spontaneous TRS breaking, which is characterized by a Chern number $C=2$ and quasi-long-range superconducting order. We map out the quantum phase diagram by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping and spin interaction. In the weaker NNN-coupling regime, we identify a pseudogaplike phase with a charge stripe order coexisting with fluctuating superconductivity, which can be tuned into $d$-wave superconductivity by increasing the doping level and system width. The TSC emerges in the intermediate-coupling regime, which has a transition to a $d$-wave superconducting phase with larger NNN couplings. The emergence of the TSC is driven by geometrical frustrations and hole dynamics which suppress spin correlation and charge order, leading to a topological quantum phase transition.

Planning for Multi-Object Manipulation with Graph Neural Network Relational Classifiers

Objects rarely sit in isolation in human environments. As such, we'd like our robots to reason about how multiple objects relate to one another and how those relations may change as the robot interacts with the world. To this end, we propose a novel graph neural network framework for multi-object manipulation to predict how inter-object relations change given robot actions. Our model operates on partial-view point clouds and can reason about multiple objects dynamically interacting during the manipulation. By learning a dynamics model in a learned latent graph embedding space, our model enables multi-step planning to reach target goal relations. We show our model trained purely in simulation transfers well to the real world. Our planner enables the robot to rearrange a variable number of objects with a range of shapes and sizes using both push and pick and place skills.

Global quantum phase diagram and non-Abelian chiral spin liquid in a spin-3/2 square lattice antiferromagnet

Since strong quantum fluctuations are essential for the emergence of quantum spin liquids, there have been extensive exploration and identification of spin liquid candidates in spin-$1/2$ systems, while such activities are rare in higher spin systems. Here we report an example of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid emerging in spin-$3/2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. By tuning Heisenberg exchange interaction and scalar chirality interaction, we map out a quantum phase diagram enclosing three conventional magnetic orders and a chiral spin liquid based on density matrix renormalization group studies. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a long-sought bosonic version of Read-Rezayi state that supports non-Abelian Fibonacci anyonic statistics, identified by the ground state entanglement spectrum. Significantly, we establish that the non-Abelian CSL emerges through the enlarged local degrees of freedom and enhanced quantum fluctuations near the classical phase boundaries of competing magnetic orders. Our numerical discovery of an exotic quantum spin liquid in spin-$3/2$ system suggests a new route for discovering fractionalized quantum phases in frustrated higher spin magnetic compounds.

Topological chiral and nematic superconductivity by doping Mott insulators on triangular lattice

The mechanism of the unconventional topological superconductivity (TSC) remains a long-standing issue. We investigate the quantum phase diagram of the extended $t$-$J$-$J_χ$ model including spin chiral interactions on triangular lattice based on the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group simulations. We identify distinct classes of superconducting phases characterized by nonzero topological Chern numbers $C=1$ and $2$, and a nematic d-wave superconducting phase with a zero Chern number. The TSC states are shown to emerge from doping either a magnetic insulator or chiral spin liquid, which opens new opportunities for experimental discovery. In addition, we further classify the $C=2$ class of TSC phases into an isotropic and a nematic TSC phases, and present evidence of continuous quantum phase transitions from the nematic TSC phase to both isotropic TSC and nematic d-wave phases. These results provide new insight into the mechanism of TSC with an emphasis on the role played by hole dynamics, which changes spin background and drives a topological phase transition at a hole doping level around $3\%$ upon doping a magnetic insulator to enable the emergence of the TSC.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_χ$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Toward Learning Context-Dependent Tasks from Demonstration for Tendon-Driven Surgical Robots

Tendon-driven robots, a type of continuum robot, have the potential to reduce the invasiveness of surgery by enabling access to difficult-to-reach anatomical targets. In the future, the automation of surgical tasks for these robots may help reduce surgeon strain in the face of a rapidly growing population. However, directly encoding surgical tasks and their associated context for these robots is infeasible. In this work we take steps toward a system that is able to learn to successfully perform context-dependent surgical tasks by learning directly from a set of expert demonstrations. We present three models trained on the demonstrations conditioned on a vector encoding the context of the demonstration. We then use these models to plan and execute motions for the tendon-driven robot similar to the demonstrations for novel context not seen in the training set. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method on three surgery-inspired tasks.

Quasi-flat-band physics in a two-leg ladder model and its relation to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

We study the single- and many-particle properties of a two-leg ladder model threaded by a flux with the legs coupled by a spatially varying term. Although a priori unrelated to twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), the model is found to have striking similarities: a quasi-flat low-energy band emerges with characteristics similar to that of magic angle TBG. We study the effect of interparticle interaction in our model using the density matrix renormalization group and find that when the band is quasi-flat, the ground state is a ferromagnetic Mott insulator. As the band becomes more dispersive, the system undergoes a ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition. We discuss how our model is relevant not only to magic-angle physics in TBG, but also in the larger context of one-dimensional correlations and magnetism.

Coupled dimer and bond-order-wave order in the quarter-filled one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

Motivated by the experiments on the organic compound $(Per)_{2}[Pt(mnt)_{2}]$, we study the ground state of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling with the density matrix renormalization group method. We show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter $J_{c}$, with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experimental findings of the simultaneous Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions at low temperatures, which provides a theoretical understanding of such phase transition. We also show that the localized spins in this insulating state have quasi-long ranged spin correlations with collinear configurations, which resemble the classical dimer order in the absence of a magnetic order.

Quantum phase diagram and chiral spin liquid in the extended spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ honeycomb XY model

The frustrated XY model on the honeycomb lattice has drawn lots of attentions because of the potential emergence of chiral spin liquid (CSL) with the increasing of frustrations or competing interactions. In this work, we study the extended spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XY model with nearest-neighbor ($J_1$), and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_2$) interactions in the presence of a three-spins chiral ($J_χ$) term using density matrix renormalization group methods. We obtain a quantum phase diagram with both conventionally ordered and topologically ordered phases. In particular, the long-sought Kalmeyer-Laughlin CSL is shown to emerge under a small $J_χ$ perturbation due to the interplay of the magnetic frustration and chiral interactions. The CSL, which is a non-magnetic phase, is identified by the scalar chiral order, the finite spin gap on a torus, and the chiral entanglement spectrum described by chiral $SU(2)_{1}$ conformal field theory.

Temperature-dependent spectral function of a Kondo impurity in an $s$-wave superconductor

Using the numerical renormalization group method, the effect due to a Kondo impurity in an $s$-wave superconductor is examined at finite temperature ($T$). The $T$-behaviors of the spectral function and the magnetic moment at the impurity site are calculated. At $T$=0, the spin due to the impurity is in singlet state when the ratio between the Kondo temperature $T_k$ and the superconducting gap $Δ$ is larger than 0.26. Otherwise, the spin of the impurity is in a doublet state. We show that the separation of the double Yu-Shiba-Rusinov peaks in the spectral function shrinks as $T$ increases if $T_k/Δ<0.26$ while it is expanding if $T_k/Δ>0.26$ and $Δ$ remains to be a constant. These features could be measured by experiments and thus provide a unique way to determine whether the spin of the single Kondo impurity is in singlet or doublet state at zero temperature.

Sidon sets and 2-caps in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$

For each natural number $d$, we introduce the concept of a $d$-cap in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$. A subset of $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ is called a $d$-cap if, for each $k = 1, 2, \dots, d$, no $k+2$ of the points lie on a $k$-dimensional flat. This generalizes the notion of a cap in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$. We prove that the $2$-caps in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ are exactly the Sidon sets in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ and study the problem of determining the size of the largest $2$-cap in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$.
