Base-extension Semantics for Intuitionistic Modal Logics

The proof theory and semantics of intuitionistic modal logics have been studied by Simpson in terms of Prawitz-style labelled natural deduction systems and Kripke models. An alternative to model-theoretic semantics is provided by proof-theoretic semantics, which is a logical realization of inferentialism, in which the meaning of constructs is understood through their use. The key idea in proof-theoretic semantics is that of a base of atomic rules, all of which refer only to propositional atoms and involve no logical connectives. A specific form of proof-theoretic semantics, known as base-extension semantics (B-eS), is concerned with the validity of formulae and provides a direct counterpart to Kripke models that is grounded in the provability of atomic formulae in a base. We establish, systematically, B-eS for Simpson's intuitionistic modal logics and, also systematically, obtain soundness and completeness theorems with respect to Simpson's natural deduction systems.

Classical Logic as Intuitionistic Logic with Duality

The field of proof-theoretic semantics (P-tS) offers an alternative approach to meaning in logic that is based on inference and argument (rather than truth in a model). It has been successfully developed for various logics; in particular, Sandqvist has developed such semantics for both classical and intuitionistic logic. In the case of classical logic, P-tS provides a conception of consequence that avoids an a priori commitment to the principle of bivalence, addressing what Dummett identified as a significant foundational challenge in logic. In this paper, we propose an alternative P-tS for classical logic, which essentially extends the P-tS for intuitionistic logic by operating over literals rather than atomic propositions. Importantly, literals are atomic and not defined by negation but are related by a primitive duality encoded inferentially at the atomic level. This semantics illustrates the perspective that classical logic can be understood as intuitionistic logic supplemented by a principle of duality, offering fresh insights into the relationship between these two systems.

A Proof-theoretic Semantics for Intuitionistic Linear Logic

The approach taken by Gheorghiu, Gu and Pym in their paper on giving a base-extension semantics for Intuitionistic Multiplicative Linear Logic is an interesting adaptation of the work of Sandqvist for IPL to the substructural setting. What is particularly interesting is how naturally the move to the substructural setting provided a semantics for the multiplicative fragment of intuitionistic linear logic. Whilst ultimately the Gheorghiu, Gu and Pym used their foundations to provide a semantics for bunched implication logic, it begs the question, what of the rest of intuitionistic linear logic? In this paper, I present just such a semantics. This is particularly of interest as this logic has as a connective the bang, a modal connective. Capturing the inferentialist content of formulae marked with this connective is particularly challenging and a discussion is dedicated to this at the end of the paper.
