Giant anomalous Nernst effect and quantum-critical scaling in a ferromagnetic semimetal

In metallic ferromagnets, the Berry curvature of underlying quasiparticles can cause an electric voltage perpendicular to both magnetization and an applied temperature gradient, a phenomenon called the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). Here, we report the observation of a giant ANE in the full-Heusler ferromagnet Co$_2$MnGa, reaching $S_{yx}\sim -6$ $μ$V/K at room $T$, one order of magnitude larger than the maximum value reported for a magnetic conductor. With increasing temperature, the transverse thermoelectric conductivity or Peltier coefficient $α_{yx}$ shows a crossover between $T$-linear and $-T \log(T)$ behaviors, indicating the violation of Mott formula at high temperatures. Our numerical and analytical calculations indicate that the proximity to a quantum Lifshitz transition between type-I and type-II magnetic Weyl fermions is responsible for the observed crossover properties and an enhanced $α_{yx}$. The $T$ dependence of $α_{yx}$ in experiments and numerical calculations can be understood in terms of a quantum critical scaling function predicted by the low energy effective theory over more than a decade of temperatures. Moreover, the observation of chiral anomaly or an unsaturated positive longitudinal magnetoconductance also provide evidence for the existence of Weyl fermions in Co$_2$MnGa.

Large anomalous Nernst coefficient in an oxide Skyrmion crystal Chern insulator

A sizable transverse thermoelectric coefficient N , large to the extent that it potentially serves applications, is predicted to arise, by means of first-principles calculations, in a Skyrmion crystal assumed on EuO monolayer where carrier electrons are introduced upon a quantum anomalous Hall insulating phase of Chern number C = 2. This encourages future experiments to pursue such an effect.

First-principles study on thermoelectric properties of half-Heusler compounds CoMSb(M=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, and Mn)

We have performed systematic density functional calculations and evaluated thermoelectric properties, See- beck coefficient and anomalous Nernst coefficient of half-Heusler comounds CoMSb(M=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, and Mn). The carrier concentration dependence of Seebeck coefficients in nonmagnetic compounds are in good agreement with experimental values. We found that the half-metallic ferromagnetic CoMnSb show large anomalous Nernst effect originating from Berry curvature at the Brillouin zone boundary. These results help to understanding for the mechanism of large anomalous Nernst coefficient and give us a clue to design high performance magnetic thermoelectric materials.

Large Anomalous Nernst Effect in a Skyrmion Crystal

Thermoelectric properties of a model Skyrmion crystal were theoretically investigated, and it was found that its large anomalous Hall conductivity, corresponding to large Chern numbers induced by its peculiar spin structure leads to a large transverse thermoelectric voltage through the anomalous Nernst effect. This implies the possibility of finding good thermoelectric materials among Skyrmion systems, and thus motivates our quests for them by means of the first-principles calculations as were employed here.

First-principles study on cubic pyrochlore iridates Y2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7

Fully relativistic first-principles electronic structure calculations based on a noncollinear local spin density approximation (LSDA) are performed for pyrochlore iridates Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The all-in, all-out antiferromagnetic (AF) order is stablized by the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U>U_c$ in the LSDA+$U$ scheme, with $U_c\sim1.1$~eV and 1.3~eV for Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, respectively. AF semimetals with and without Weyl points and then a topologically trivial AF insulator successively appear with further increasing $U$. For $U=1.3$~eV, Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is a topologically trivial narrow-gap AF insulator having an ordered local magnetic moment $\sim0.5μ_B$/Ir, while Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is barely a paramagnetic semimetal with electron and hole concentrations of $0.016$/Ir, in overall agreements with experiments. With decreasing oxygen position parameter $x$ describing the trigonal compression of IrO$_6$ octahedra, Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is driven through a non-Fermi-liquid semimetal having only an isolated Fermi point of $Γ_8^+$, showing a quadratic band touching, to a $Z_2$ topological insulator.

Contribution of Berry Curvature to Thermoelectric Effects

Within the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, the formula for Seebeck coefficient $S$ is derived for an isotropic two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system that exhibits anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) originating from Berry curvature on their bands. Deviation of $S$ from the value $S_0$ estimated neglecting Berry curvarture is computed for a special case of 2DEG with Zeeman and Rashba terms. The result shows that, under certain conditions the contribution of Berry curvature to Seebeck effect could be non-negligible. Further study is needed to clarify the effect of additional contributions from mechanisms of AHE and ANE other than pure Berry curvature.
