On the Woodin Construction of Failure of GCH at a Measurable Cardinal

Let GCH hold and let $j:V\longrightarrow M$ be a definable elementary embedding such that $crit(j)=κ$, $^κM\subseteq M$ and $κ^{++}=κ_{M}^{++}$. H. Woodin proved that there is a cofinality preserving generic extension in which $κ$ is measurable and GCH fails at it. This is done by using an Easton support iteration of Cohen forcings for blowing the power of every inaccessible $α\leqκ$ to $α^{++}$, and then adding another forcing on top of that. We show that it is enough to use the iterated forcing, and that the latter forcing is not needed. We will show this not only for the case where $κ^{++}=κ_{M}^{++}$, but for every successor ordinal $γ$, where $0< γ< κ$, we will show it when the assumption is $κ^{+γ}=κ_{M}^{+γ}$.

Weak Gelfand Pair Property And Application To GL(n+1),GL(n) Over Finite Fields

Let F_q be the finite field with q elements. Consider the standard embedding GL(n,F_q) -> GL(n+1,F_q). In this paper we prove that for every irreducible representation pi of GL(n+1,F_q) over algebraically closed fields of characteristic different from 2 we have dimπ^GL(n,F_q)<=2. To do that we define a property of weak Gelfand pair and prove a generalization of Gelfand trick for weak Gelfand pairs, using the anti-involution transpose to get the result for GL(n+1,F_q),GL(n,F_q). In a similar manner we show that for q not a power of 2 O(n+1,F_q),O(n,F_q) is a Gelfand pair over algebraically closed fields of characteristic different from 2.
