Tropical methods for building real space sextics with totally real tritangent planes

This paper proposes the use of combinatorial techniques from tropical geometry to build the 120 tritangent planes to a given smooth algebraic space sextic. Although the tropical count is infinite, tropical tritangents come in 15 equivalence classes, each containing the tropicalization of exactly eight classical tritangents. Under mild genericity conditions on the tropical side, we show that liftings of tropical tritangents are defined over quadratic extensions of the ground field over which the input sextic curve is defined. When the input curve is real, we prove that every complex liftable member of a given tropical tritangent class either completely lifts to the reals or none of its liftings are defined over the reals. As our main application we use these methods to build examples of real space sextics with 64 and 120 totally real tritangents, respectively. The paper concludes with a discussion of our results in the arithmetic setting.

On gonality-tight graphs

We address a question posed by Fessler--Jensen--Kelsey--Owen regarding graphs whose second gonality is greater than the first by exactly 1. We answer the question affirmatively under a stronger condition, thereby characterising the entire gonality sequence for a large family of graphs, that we refer to as quasi-banana graphs. We prove a structure theorem for those graphs, and show that they are all obtained via an inductive process by gluing together complete and banana graphs under certain rules.

The tropical Abel--Prym map

We prove that the tropical Abel--Prym map $\Psi\colon \widetilde\Gamma\to Prym(\widetilde\Gamma/\Gamma)$ associated with a free double cover $\pi\colon \widetilde\Gamma\to \Gamma$ of hyperelliptic metric graphs is harmonic of degree $2$ in accordance with the already established algebraic result. We then prove a partial converse. Contrary to the analogous algebraic result, when the source graph of the double cover is not hyperelliptic, the Abel--Prym map is often not injective. When the source graph is hyperelliptic, we show that the Abel--Prym graph $\Psi(\widetilde\Gamma)$ is a hyperelliptic metric graph of genus $g_{\Gamma}-1$ whose Jacobian is isomorphic, as pptav, to the Prym variety of the cover. En route, we count the number of distinct free double covers by hyperelliptic metric graphs.

Chip-firing games, Jacobians, and Prym varieties

We present a self-contained introduction to the theory of chip-firing games on metric graphs, as well as the more recent theory of tropical Prym varieties. We briefly discuss the connection between these notions and their algebraic counterparts and suggest various avenues for future research.

Tropical tangents for complete intersection curves

We consider the tropicalization of tangent lines to a complete intersection curve $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. Under mild hypotheses, we describe a procedure for computing the tropicalization of the image of the Gauss map of $X$ in terms of the tropicalizations of the hypersurfaces cutting out $X$. We apply this to obtain descriptions of the tropicalization of the dual variety $X^*$ and tangential variety $\tau(X)$ of $X$. In particular, we are able to compute the degrees of $X^*$ and $\tau(X)$ and the Newton polytope of $\tau(X)$ without using any elimination theory.

Kirchhoff's theorem for Prym varieties

We prove an analogue of Kirchhoff's matrix tree theorem for computing the volume of the tropical Prym variety for double covers of metric graphs. We interpret the formula in terms of a semi-canonical decomposition of the tropical Prym variety, via a careful study of the tropical Abel-Prym map. In particular, we show that the map is harmonic, determine its degree at every cell of the decomposition, and prove that its global degree is $2^{g-1}$. Along the way, we use the Ihara zeta function to provide a new proof of the analogous result for finite graphs. As a counterpart, the appendix by Sebastian Casalaina-Martin shows that the degree of the algebraic Abel-Prym map is $2^{g-1}$ as well.

Prym-Brill-Noether Loci of special curves

We use Young tableaux to compute the dimension of $V^r$, the Prym-Brill-Noether locus of a folded chain of loops of any gonality. This tropical result yields a new upper bound on the dimensions of algebraic Prym-Brill-Noether loci. Moreover, we prove that $V^r$ is pure-dimensional and connected in codimension $1$ when $\dim V^r \geq 1$. We then compute the first Betti number of this locus for even gonality when the dimension is exactly $1$, and compute the cardinality when the locus is finite and the edge lengths are generic.

Abelian tropical covers

Let $\mathfrak{A}$ be a finite abelian group. In this article, we classify harmonic $\mathfrak{A}$-covers of a tropical curve $\Gamma$ (which allow dilation along edges and at vertices) in terms of the cohomology group of a suitably defined sheaf on $\Gamma$. We give a realizability criterion for harmonic $\mathfrak{A}$-covers by patching local monodromy data in an extended homology group on $\Gamma$. As an explicit example, we work out the case $\mathfrak{A}=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ and explain how realizability for such covers is related to the nowhere-zero flow problem from graph theory.

Skeletons of Prym varieties and Brill--Noether theory

We show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the Prym variety associated to an unramified double cover of an algebraic curve is naturally isomorphic (as a principally polarized tropical abelian variety) to the tropical Prym variety of the associated tropical double cover. This confirms a conjecture by Jensen and the first author. We prove a new upper bound on the dimension of the Prym-Brill-Noether locus for generic unramified double covers of curves with fixed even gonality on the base. Our methods also give a new proof of the classical Prym-Brill-Noether Theorem for generic unramified double covers that is originally due to Welters and Bertram.

Lifting tropical self intersections

We study the tropicalization of intersections of plane curves, under the assumption that they have the same tropicalization. We show that the set of tropical divisors that arise in this manner is a pure dimensional balanced polyhedral complex and compute its dimension. When the genus is at most 1, we show that all the tropical divisors that move in the expected dimension are realizable. As part of the proof, we introduce a combinatorial tool for explicitly constructing large families of realizable tropical divisors.

Projective duals to algebraic and tropical hypersurfaces

We study a tropical analogue of the projective dual variety of a hypersurface. When $X$ is a curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$ or a surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$, we provide an explicit description of $\text{Trop}(X^*)$ in terms of $\text{Trop}(X)$, as long as $\text{Trop}(X)$ is smooth and satisfies a mild genericity condition. As a consequence, when $X$ is a curve we describe the transformation of Newton polygons under projective duality, and recover classical formulas for the degree of a dual plane curve. For higher dimensional hypersurfaces $X$, we give a partial description of $\text{Trop}(X^*)$.

Bitangents of non-smooth tropical quartics

We study bitangents of non-smooth tropical plane quartics. Our main result is that with appropriate multiplicities, every such curve has 7 equivalence classes of bitangent lines. Moreover, the multiplicity of bitangent lines varies continuously in families of tropical plane curves.

Lifting tropical bitangents

We study lifts of tropical bitangents to the tropicalization of a given complex algebraic curve together with their lifting multiplicities. Using this characterization, we show that generically all the seven bitangents of a smooth tropical plane quartic lift in sets of four to algebraic bitangents. We do this constructively, i.e. we give solutions for the initial terms of the coefficients of the bitangent lines. This is a step towards a tropical proof that a general smooth quartic admits 28 bitangent lines. The methods are also appropriate to count real bitangents, however the conditions to determine whether a tropical bitangent has real lifts are not purely combinatorial.

Tritangent planes to space sextics: the algebraic and tropical stories

We discuss the classical problem of counting planes tangent to general canonical sextic curves at three points. We determine the number of real tritangents when such a curve is real. We then revisit a curve constructed by Emch with the greatest known number of real tritangents, and conversely construct a curve with very few real tritangents. Using recent results on the relation between algebraic and tropical theta characteristics, we show that the tropicalization of a canonical sextic curve has 15 tritangent planes.

Tropicalization of theta characteristics, double covers, and Prym varieties

We study the behavior of theta characteristics on an algebraic curve under the specialization map to a tropical curve. We show that each effective theta characteristic on the tropical curve is the specialization of $2^{g-1}$ even theta characteristics and $2^{g-1}$ odd theta characteristics. We then study the relationship between unramified double covers of a tropical curve and its theta characteristics, and use this to define the tropical Prym variety.

Hyperelliptic graphs and metrized complexes

We prove a version of Clifford's theorem for metrized complexes. Namely, a metrized complex that carries a divisor of degree $2r$ and rank $r$ (for $0<r<g-1$) also carries a divisor of degree $2$ and rank $1$. We provide a structure theorem for hyperelliptic metrized complexes, and use it to classify divisors of degree bounded by the genus. We discuss a tropical version of Martens' theorem for metric graphs.

Enumerative geometry of elliptic curves on toric surfaces

We establish the equality of classical and tropical curve counts for elliptic curves on toric surfaces with fixed $j$-invariant, refining results of Mikhalkin and Nishinou--Siebert. As an application, we determine a formula for such counts on $\mathbb P^2$ and all Hirzebruch surfaces. This formula relates the count of elliptic curves with the number of rational curves on the surface satisfying a small number of tangency conditions with the toric boundary. Furthermore, the combinatorial tropical multiplicities of Kerber and Markwig for counts in $\mathbb P^2$ are derived and explained algebro-geometrically, using Berkovich geometry and logarithmic Gromov--Witten theory. As a consequence, a new proof of Pandharipande's formula for counts of elliptic curves in $\mathbb P^2$ with fixed $j$-invariant is obtained.

A note on algebraic rank, matroids, and metrized complexes

We show that the algebraic rank of divisors on certain graphs is related to the realizability problem of matroids. As a consequence, we produce a series of examples in which the algebraic rank depends on the ground field. We use the theory of metrized complexes to show that equality between the algebraic and combinatorial rank is not a sufficient condition for smoothability of divisors, thus giving a negative answer to a question posed by Caporaso, Melo, and the author.
