Connected sums of knots and weakly reducible Heegaard splittings

This paper studies the question of whether minimal genus Heegaard splittings of exterior spaces of knots which are connected sums are weakly reducible or not. Furthermore it is shown that the Heegaard splittings of the knots used by Morimoto to show that tunnel number can be sub-additive are all strongly irreducible. These are the first examples of strongly irreducible minimal genus Heegaard splittings of composite knots. We also give a characterization of when is a set of primitive annuli on a handlebody simultaneously primitive. This characterization is different from that given in [Go].

On boundary primitive manifolds and a theorem of Casson-Gordon

In this paper it is shown that manifolds admitting minimal genus weakly reducible but irreducible Heegaard splittings contain an essential surface. This is an extension of a well known theorem of Casson-Gordon to manifolds with non-empty boundary. The situation for non-minimal genus Heegaard splittings is also investigated and it is shown that boundary stabilizations are stabilizations for manifolds which are boundary primitive.

On the intersection of unknotting tunnels and the decomposing annulus in connected sums

Given $(V_1,V_2)$ a Heegaard splitting of the complement of a composite knot $K=K_1# K_2$ in $S^3$, where $K_i, i=1,2$ are prime knots, we have a unique, up to isotopy, decomposing annulus $A$. When the intersection of $A$ and $V_1$ is a minimal collection of disks we study the components of $V_1-N(A)$ and show that at most one component is a 3-ball meeting $A$ in two disks. This is a crucial step in proving the conjecture that a necessary and sufficient condition for the tunnel number of a connected sum to be less than or equal to the sum of the tunnel numbers is that one of the knots has a Heegaard splitting in which a merdian curve is primitive.

A finiteness result for Heegaard splittings

In this paper we show that for a given 3-manifold and a given Heegaard splitting there are finitely many preferred decomposing systems of $3g - 3$ disjoint essential disks. These are characterized by a combinatorial criterion which is a slight strengthening of Casson-Gordon's rectangle condition. This is in contrast to fact that in general there can exist infinitely many such systems of disks which satisfy just the Casson-Gordon rectangle condition.

Additive tunnel number and primitive elements

It is proven here that if the connected sum of two tunnel number one knots in the 3-sphere is a tunnel number two knot, then at least one of the summand knots has a genus two Heegaard splitting with a meridian as a primitive element. Hence this is a necessary and sufficient condition for tunnel number one knots to have additive tunnel number.

3-Manifolds with irreducible Heegaard splittings of high genus

Non-isotopic Heegaard splittings of non-minimal genus were known previously only for very special 3-manifolds. We show in this paper that they are in fact a wide spread phenomenon in 3-manifold theory: We exhibit a large class of knots and manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery on these knots which admit such splittings. Many of the manifolds have irreducible Heegaard splittings of arbitrary large genus. All these splittings are horizontal and are isotopic, after one stabilization, to a multiple stabilization of certain canonical low genus vertical Heegaard splittings.
