SLA Management in Intent-Driven Service Management Systems: A Taxonomy and Future Directions

Traditionally, network and system administrators are responsible for designing, configuring, and resolving the Internet service requests. Human-driven system configuration and management are proving unsatisfactory due to the recent interest in time-sensitive applications with stringent quality of service (QoS). Aiming to transition from the traditional human-driven to zero-touch service management in the field of networks and computing, intent-driven service management (IDSM) has been proposed as a response to stringent quality of service requirements. In IDSM, users express their service requirements in a declarative manner as intents. IDSM, with the help of closed control-loop operations, perform configurations and deployments, autonomously to meet service request requirements. The result is a faster deployment of Internet services and reduction in configuration errors caused by manual operations, which in turn reduces the service-level agreement (SLA) violations. In the early stages of development, IDSM systems require attention from industry as well as academia. In an attempt to fill the gaps in current research, we conducted a systematic literature review of SLA management in IDSM systems. As an outcome, we have identified four IDSM intent management activities and proposed a taxonomy for each activity. Analysis of all studies and future research directions, are presented in the conclusions.

Designer Magnetism in High Entropy Oxides

Disorder can have a dominating influence on correlated and quantum materials leading to novel behaviors which have no clean limit counterparts. In magnetic systems, spin and exchange disorder can provide access to quantum criticality, frustration, and spin dynamics, but broad tunability of these responses and a deeper understanding of strong limit disorder is lacking. In this work, we demonstrate that high entropy oxides present an unexplored route to designing quantum materials in which the presence of strong local compositional disorder hosted on a positionally ordered lattice can be used to generate highly tunable emergent magnetic behavior--from macroscopically ordered states to frustration-driven dynamic spin interactions. Single crystal La(Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)O3 films are used as a structurally uniform model system hosting a magnetic sublattice with massive microstate disorder in the form of site-to-site spin and exchange type inhomogeneity. A classical Heisenberg model is found to be sufficient to describe how compositionally disordered systems can paradoxically host long-range magnetic uniformity and demonstrates that balancing the populating elements based on their discrete quantum parameters can be used to give continuous control over ordering types and critical temperatures. Theory-guided experiments show that composite exchange values derived from the complex mix of microstate interactions can be used to design the required compositional parameters for a desired response. These predicted materials are synthesized and found to possess an incipient quantum critical point when magnetic ordering types are designed to be in direct competition; this leads to highly controllable exchange bias sensitivity in the monolithic single crystal films previously accessible only in intentionally designed bilayer heterojunctions.

High Entropy Oxide Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Relaxor ferrolectrics are important in technological applications due to a strong electromechanical response, energy storage capacity, electrocaloric effect, and pyroelectric energy conversion properties. Current efforts to discover and design new materials in this class generally rely on substitutional doping of known ferroelectrics, as slight changes to local compositional order can significantly affect the Curie temperature, morphotropic phase boundary, and electromechanical responses. In this work, we demonstrate that moving to the strong limit of compositional complexity in an ABO3 perovskite allows stabilization of novel relaxor responses that do not rely on a single narrow phase transition region. Entropy-assisted synthesis approaches are used to create single crystal Ba(Ti0.2Sn0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3 [Ba(5B)O] films. The high levels of configurational disorder present in this system is found to influence dielectric relaxation, phase transitions, nano-polar domain formation, and Curie temperature. Temperature-dependent dielectric, Raman spectroscopy and second-harmonic generation measurements reveal multiple phase transitions, a high Curie temperature of 570 K, and the relaxor ferroelectric nature of Ba(5B)O films. The first principles theory calculations are used to predict possible combinations of cations to quantify the relative feasibility of formation of highly disordered single-phase perovskite systems. The ability to stabilize single-phase perovskites with such a large number of different cations on the B-sites offers new possibilities for designing high-performance materials for piezoelectric, pyroelectric and tunable dielectric applications.

Tuning magnetic and optical properties through strain in epitaxial LaCrO3 thin films

We report on the effect of epitaxial strain on magnetic and optical properties of perovskite LaCrO3 (LCO) single crystal thin films. Epitaxial LCO thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on proper choice of substrates to impose different strain states. A combined experimental and theoretical approach is used to demonstrate the direct correlation between lattice-strain and functional properties. The magnetization results show that the lattice anisotropy plays a critical role in controlling the magnetic behavior of LCO films. The strain induced tetragonality in the film lattice strongly affects the optical transitions and charge transfer gap in LCO. This study opens new possibilities to tailoring the functional properties of LCO and related materials by strain engineering in epitaxial growth.

Decoding the shift-invariant data: applications for band-excitation scanning probe microscopy

A shift-invariant variational autoencoder (shift-VAE) is developed as an unsupervised method for the analysis of spectral data in the presence of shifts along the parameter axis, disentangling the physically-relevant shifts from other latent variables. Using synthetic data sets, we show that the shift-VAE latent variables closely match the ground truth parameters. The shift VAE is extended towards the analysis of band-excitation piezoresponse force microscopy (BE-PFM) data, disentangling the resonance frequency shifts from the peak shape parameters in a model-free unsupervised manner. The extensions of this approach towards denoising of data and model-free dimensionality reduction in imaging and spectroscopic data are further demonstrated. This approach is universal and can also be extended to analysis of X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, Raman spectra, and other data sets.

Magnetic Texture in Insulating Single Crystal High Entropy Oxide Spinel Films

Magnetic insulators are important materials for a range of next generation memory and spintronic applications. Structural constraints in this class of devices generally require a clean heterointerface that allows effective magnetic coupling between the insulating layer and the conducting layer. However, there are relatively few examples of magnetic insulators which can be synthesized with surface qualities that would allow these smooth interfaces and precisely tuned interfacial magnetic exchange coupling which might be applicable at room temperature. In this work, we demonstrate an example of how the configurational complexity in the magnetic insulator layer can be used to realize these properties. The entropy-assisted synthesis is used to create single crystal (Mg0.2Ni0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Cu0.2)Fe2O4 films on substrates spanning a range of strain states. These films show smooth surfaces, high resistivity, and strong magnetic responses at room temperature. Local and global magnetic measurements further demonstrate how strain can be used to manipulate magnetic texture and anisotropy. These findings provide insight into how precise magnetic responses can be designed using compositionally complex materials that may find application in next generation magnetic devices.

Magnetic anisotropy in single crystal high entropy perovskite oxide La(Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)O3 films

Local configurational disorder can have a dominating role in the formation of macroscopic functional responses in strongly correlated materials. Here, we use entropy-stabilization synthesis to create single crystal epitaxial ABO3 perovskite thin films with equal atomic concentration of 3d transition metal cations on the B-site sublattice. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy of La(Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)O3 (L5BO) films demonstrate excellent crystallinity, smooth film surfaces, and uniform mixing of the 3d transition metal cations throughout the B-site sublattice. The magnetic properties are strongly dependent on substrate-induced lattice anisotropy and suggest the presence of long-range magnetic order in these exceptionally disordered materials. The ability to populate multiple elements onto a single sublattice in complex crystal structures opens new possibilities to design functionality in correlated systems and enable novel fundamental studies seeking to understand how diverse local bonding environments can work to generate macroscopic responses, such as those driven by electron-phonon channels and complex exchange interaction pathways.

Competing Phases in Epitaxial Vanadium Dioxide at Nanoscale

Phase competition in correlated oxides offers tantalizing opportunities as many intriguing physical phenomena occur near the phase transitions. Owing to a sharp metal-insulator transition (MIT) near room temperature, correlated vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits a strong competition between insulating and metallic phases that is important for practical applications. However, the phase boundary undergoes strong modification when strain is involved, yielding complex phase transitions. Here, we report the emergence of the nanoscale M2 phase domains in VO2 epitaxial films under anisotropic strain relaxation. The phase states of the films are imaged by multi-length-scale probes, detecting the structural and electrical properties in individual local domains. Competing evolution of the M1 and M2 phases indicates a critical role of lattice-strain on both the stability of the M2 Mott phase and the energetics of the MIT in VO2 films. This study demonstrates how strain engineering can be utilized to design phase states, which allow deliberate control of MIT behavior at the nanoscale in epitaxial VO2 films.

Self-Assembled Room Temperature Multiferroic BiFeO3-LiFe5O8 Nanocomposites

Multiferroic materials have driven significant research interest due to their promising technological potential. Developing new room-temperature multiferroics and understanding their fundamental properties are important to reveal unanticipated physical phenomena and potential applications. Here, a new room temperature multiferroic nanocomposite comprised of an ordered ferrimagnetic spinel LiFe5O8 (LFO) and a ferroelectric perovskite BiFeO3 (BFO) is presented. We observed that lithium (Li)-doping in BFO favors the formation of LFO spinel as a secondary phase during the synthesis of LixBi1-xFeO3 nanoceramics. Multimodal functional and chemical imaging methods are used to map the relationship between doping-induced phase separation and local ferroic properties in both the BFO-LFO composite ceramics and self-assembled nanocomposite thin films. The energetics of phase separation in Li doped BFO and the formation of BFO-LFO composites is supported by first principles calculations. These findings shed light on Li-ion role in the formation of a functionally important room temperature multiferroic and open a new approach in the synthesis of light element doped nanocomposites.

Integrating Objects into Monocular SLAM: Line Based Category Specific Models

We propose a novel Line based parameterization for category specific CAD models. The proposed parameterization associates 3D category-specific CAD model and object under consideration using a dictionary based RANSAC method that uses object Viewpoints as prior and edges detected in the respective intensity image of the scene. The association problem is posed as a classical Geometry problem rather than being dataset driven, thus saving the time and labour that one invests in annotating dataset to train Keypoint Network for different category objects. Besides eliminating the need of dataset preparation, the approach also speeds up the entire process as this method processes the image only once for all objects, thus eliminating the need of invoking the network for every object in an image across all images. A 3D-2D edge association module followed by a resection algorithm for lines is used to recover object poses. The formulation optimizes for shape and pose of the object, thus aiding in recovering object 3D structure more accurately. Finally, a Factor Graph formulation is used to combine object poses with camera odometry to formulate a SLAM problem.

Single Crystal High Entropy Perovskite Oxide Epitaxial Films

The first examples of single crystal epitaxial thin films of a high entropy perovskite oxide are synthesized. Pulsed laser deposition is used to grow the configurationally disordered ABO3 perovskite, Ba(Zr0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3, epitaxially on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates. X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that the films are single phase with excellent crystallinity and atomically abrupt interfaces to the underlying substrates. Atomically-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy mapping shows a uniform and random distribution of all B-site cations. The ability to stabilize perovskites with this level of configurational disorder offers new possibilities for designing materials from a much broader combinatorial cation pallet while providing a fresh avenue for fundamental studies in strongly correlated quantum materials where local disorder can play a critical role in determining macroscopic properties.

Room-temperature relaxor ferroelectricity and photovoltaic effects in SnTiOx/Si thin film heterostructures

We have studied ferroelectricity and photovoltaic effects in atomic layer deposited (ALD) 40-nm thick SnTiO$_{x}$ films deposited directly onto p-type (001)Si substrate. These films showed well-saturated, square and repeatable hysteresis loops with remnant polarization of 1.5 $μ$C/cm$^{2}$ at room temperature, as detected by out-of-plane polarization versus electric field (P-E) and field cycling measurements. A photo-induced enhancement in ferroelectricity was also observed as the spontaneous polarization increased under white-light illumination. The ferroelectricity exhibits relaxor characteristics with dielectric peak shifting from ca. T = 600 K at f = 1 MHz to ca. 500 K at 100 Hz. Moreover, our films showed ferroelectric photovoltaic behavior under the illumination of a wide spectrum of light, from visible to ultraviolet regions. A combination of experiment and theoretical calculation provided optical band gap of SnTiO$_{x}$ films which lies in the visible range of white light spectra. Our study leads a way to develop green ferroelectric SnTiO$_{x}$ thin films, which are compatible to semiconducting processes, and can be used for various ferroelectric and dielectric applications.

Switchable photovoltaic and polarization modulated rectification in Si-integrated Pt-(Bi0.9Sm0.1)(Fe0.97Hf0.03)O3-LaNiO3 heterostructures

We studied switchable photovoltaic and photo-diode characteristics of Pt (Bi0.9Sm0.1)(Fe0.97Hf0.03)O3 LaNiO3 (Pt BSFHO LNO) heterostructures integrated on Si (100). The directions of photocurrent (JSC) and rectification are found to be reversibly switchable after applying external poling voltages. In pristine state, metal-ferroelectric-metal capacitor Pt BSFHO LNO shows JSC 32 microAmp cm2 and VOC 0.04 V, which increase to maximum value of JSC 303 ( 206) microAmp cm2 and VOC 0.32 (0.26) V after upward (downward) poling at 8 V. We believe that Schottky barrier modulation by polarization flipping at Pt BSFHO interface could be a main driving force behind switchable photovoltaic and rectifying diode characteristics of Pt BSFHO LNO heterostructures.

Nonpolar resistive memory switching with all four possible resistive switching modes in amorphous ternary rare earth LaHoO3 thin films

We studied the resistive memory switching in pulsed laser deposited amorphous LaHoO3 (LHO) thin films for non-volatile resistive random access memory (RRAM) applications. Nonpolar resistive switching (RS) was achieved in PtLHOPt memory cells with all four possible RS modes ( positive unipolar, positive bipolar, negative unipolar, and negative bipolar) having high RON and ROFF ratios (in the range of 104 to 105) and non-overlapping switching voltages (set voltage, VON 3.6 to 4.2 V and reset voltage, VOFF 1.3 to 1.6 V) with a small variation of about 5 to 8 percent. X ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies together with temperature dependent switching characteristics revealed the formation of metallic holmium (Ho) and oxygen vacancies (VO) constituted conductive nanofilaments (CNFs) in the low resistance state (LRS). Detailed analysis of current versus voltage characteristics further corroborated the formation of CNFs based on metal like (Ohmic) conduction in LRS. Simmons Schottky emission was found to be the dominant charge transport mechanism in the high resistance state.

Structural phase transition of ternary high-k dielectric SmGdO3: Evidence from ADXRD and Raman Spectroscopic Studies

High-pressure synchrotron based angle dispersive x-ray diffraction (ADXRD) studies were carried out on SmGdO3 (SGO) up to 25.7GPa at room temperature. ADXRD results indicated a reversible pressure-induced phase transition from ambient monoclinic to hexagonal phase at about 8.9 GPa. The observed pressure-volume data were fitted into the third order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yielding zero pressure bulk moduli B0 = 132(22) and 177(22) GPa for monoclinic and hexagonal phases, respectively. Pressure dependent micro-Raman spectroscopy further confirmed the phase transition. The mode Gruneisen parameters and pressure coefficients for different Raman modes corresponding to each individual phase of SGO were calculated.

Phonons correlation with magnetic excitations in weak ferromagnet YCrO3

We report on the temperature dependent Raman spectroscopic studies of orthorombic distorted perovskite YCrO3 in the temperature range of 20-300K. Temperature dependence of DC-magnetization measurement under field cooled and zero field cooled modes confirmed the transition temperature (TN ~142K) and anomalous characteristic temperature (T* ~60K), above which magnetization tends to saturate. Magnetization isotherm recorded below TN at 125K shows clear loop opening without magnetization saturation up to 20kOe, indicating the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction with weak ferromagnetic (WFM) phase. Mean field calculation for exchange constants further confirms the complex magnetic phase below TN. Temperature evolution of lineshape parameters of selected modes (associated with the octahedral rotation and A-shift in the unit cell) revealed anomalous phonon shift near Cr3+ magnetic ordering temperature (TN ~142K). Additional phonon anomaly was identified at T* ~60K in agreement with the magnetization results and reflects the change in spin dynamics, plausibly due to the change in Cr-spin configuration. Moreover, the positive and negative shift in Raman frequency below TN revel the existence of competing WFM and AFM exchanges. The phonon shift of B3g (3)-octahedral rotation mode fairly scaled with the square of sublattice magnetization from TN to T*, below which it start to depart from theconventional behaviour and need further attention. This correlation between magnetic and Raman data elucidate the spin-phonon coupling owing to the multiferroic phenomenon in YCrO3.
