Heat capacity evidence for conventional superconductivity in the Type-II Dirac semi-metal PdTe$_2$

We use electrical transport, magnetoresistance, and heat capacity measurements on high quality single crystals of the recently discovered superconducting Type-II Dirac semi-metal PdTe$_2$, to probe the nature of it's superconducting phase. The magnitude of the electronic heat capacity anomaly at $T_c$, the low temperature exponential $T$ dependence of the heat capacity, and a conventional $H - T$ phase diagram establish that the superconductivity in PdTe$_2$ is conventional in nature despite the presence of a topologically non-trivial Fermi surface band which contributes to the electrical conduction.

Crystal growth and magnetic anisotropy in the spin-chain ruthenate Na$_2$RuO$_4$

We report single crystal growth, electrical resistivity $ρ$, anisotropic magnetic susceptibiltiy $χ$, and heat capacity $C_p$ measurements on the one-dimensional spin-chain ruthenate Na$_2$RuO$_4$. We observe variable range hopping (VRH) behaviour in $ρ(T)$. The magnetic susceptibility with magnetic field perpendicular ($χ_\perp$) and parallel ($χ_\parallel$) to the spin-chains is reported. The magnetic properties are anisotropic with $χ_\perp > χ_\parallel$ in the temperature range of measurements T $\approx 2$ to $305$ K with $χ_\perp / χ_\parallel$ $\approx 1.4$ at $305$ K. Analysis of the $χ(T)$ data reveals an anisotropy in the $g$-factor and Van-Vleck paramagnetic contribution. An anomaly in $χ(T)$ and a corresponding lambda-like anomaly in $C_p$ at $T_N = 37$ K confirms long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. This temperature is an order of magnitude smaller than the Weiss temperature $θ\sim -250$ K and points to suppression of long range magnetic order due to low dimensionality. However, we were unable to get a satisfactory fit of the experimental $χ(T)$ by an isolated one-dimensional spin-chain model, suggesting the importance of inter-chain interactions in Na$_2$RuO$_4$.

Models and Materials for Generalized Kitaev Magnetism

The exactly solvable Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice has recently received enormous attention linked to the hope of achieving novel spin-liquid states with fractionalized Majorana-like excitations. In this review, we analyze the mechanism proposed by G. Jackeli and G. Khaliullin to identify Kitaev materials based on spin-orbital dependent bond interactions and provide a comprehensive overview of its implications in real materials. We set the focus on experimental results and current theoretical understanding of planar honeycomb systems (Na$_2$IrO$_3$, $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, and $α$-RuCl$_3$), three-dimensional Kitaev materials ($β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$), and other potential candidates, completing the review with the list of open questions awaiting new insights.

Possible multigap Type-I superconductivity in the layered Boride RuB$_2$

The structure of the layered transition-metal Borides $A$B$_2$ ($A =$ Os, Ru) is built up by alternating $T$ and B layers with the B layers forming a puckered honeycomb. Here we report superconducting properties of RuB$_2$ with a $T_c \approx 1.5$K using measurements of the magnetic susceptibility versus temperature $T$, magnetization $M$ versus magnetic field $H$, resistivity versus $T$, and heat capacity versus $T$ at various $H$. We observe a reduced heat capacity anomaly at $T_c$ given by $ΔC/γT_c \approx 1.1$ suggesting multi-gap superconductivity. Strong support for this is obtained by the successful fitting of the electronic specific heat data to a two-gap model with gap values $Δ_1/k_BT_c \approx 1.88$ and $Δ_2/k_BT_c \approx 1.13$. Additionally, $M$ versus $H$ measurements reveal a behaviour consistent with Type-I superconductivity. This is confirmed by estimates of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ\approx 0.1$--$0.66$. These results strongly suggest multi-gap Type-I superconductivity in RuB$_2$. We also calculate the band structure and obtain the Fermi surface for RuB$_2$. The Fermi surface consists of one quasi-two-dimensional sheet and two nested ellipsoidal sheets very similar to OsB$_2$. An additional small $4^{\rm th}$ sheet is also found for RuB$_2$. RuB$_2$ could thus be a rare example of a multi-gap Type-I superconductor.

Phase transitions in Lu$_2$Ir$_3$Si$_5$

We report the results of our investigations on a polycrystalline sample of Lu$_2$Ir$_3$Si$_5$ which crystallizes in the U$_2$Co$_3$Si$_5$ type structure (Ibam). These investigations comprise powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and high temperature (120-300 K) heat capacity studies. Our results reveal that the sample undergoes a superconducting transition below 3.5 K. It also undergoes a first order phase transition between 150-250 K as revealed by an upturn in the resistivity, a diasmagnetic drop in the magnetic susceptibility and a large anomaly (20-30 J/mol K) in the specific heat data. We observe a huge thermal hysteresis of almost 45 K between the cooling and warming data across this high temperature transition in all our measurements. Low temperature X-ray diffraction measurements at 87 K reveals that the compound undergoes a structural change at the high temperature transition. Resistivity data taken in repeated cooling and warming cycles indicate that at the high temperature transition, the system goes into a highly metastable state and successive heating/cooling curves are found to lie above the previous one and the resistance keeps increasing with every thermal cycle. The room temperature resistance of a thermaly cycled piece of the sample decays exponentialy with time with a decay time constant estimated to be about 10$^4$ secs. The anomaly (upturn) in the resistivity and the large drop (almost 45%) in the susceptibility across the high temperature transition suggest that the observed structural change is accompanied or induced by an electronic transition.

Synthesis and pressure and field dependent magnetic properties of the Kagome-bilayer spin liquid Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$

We report synthesis of polycrystalline samples of the recently discovered spin liquid material Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ and present measurements of the ambient and high pressure magnetic susceptibility $χ$ versus temperature $T$, magnetization $M$ versus magnetic field $H$ at various $T$, and heat capacity $C$ versus $T$ at various $H$. The ambient pressure magnetic measurements indicate the presence of both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions with dominant ferromagnetic interactions and with the largest magnetic energy scale $\sim 10$~K\@. The $χ(T)$ measurements under externally applied pressure of up to $P \approx 1$~GPa indicate the robust nature of the spin-liquid state despite relative increase in the ferromagnetic exchanges. $C(T)$ shows a broad anomaly at $T\approx 2.5$~K which moves to higher temperatures in a magnetic field. The evolution of the low temperature $C(T,H)$ and the magnetic entropy is consistent with frustrated magnetism in Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$.

Density wave like transport anomalies in surface doped Na$_{2}$IrO$_3$

We report that the surface conductivity of Na$_{2}$IrO$_3$ crystal is extremely tunable by high energy Ar plasma etching and can be tuned from insulating to metallic with increasing etching time. Temperature dependent electrical transport for the metallic samples show signatures of first order phase transitions which are consistent with charge or spin density wave like phase transitions recently predicted theoretically. Additionally, grazing-incidence small-angle x-ray scattering (GISAXS) reveal that the room temperature surface structure of Na$_{2}$IrO$_3$ does not change after plasma etching.

First order density wave like transitions in surface doped Na$_2$IrO$_3$

We demonstrate that the surface of the honeycomb lattice iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$ is extremely tunable by plasma etching. We have succeeded in turning the surface of Na$_2$IrO$_3$ metallic by Ar plasma etching which leads to the removal of Na from the surface. The surface structure does not change in this process as revealed by grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering (GISAXS). The sheet resistance $R_s$ can be reduced by several orders of magnitude by varying the etching duration. Temperature dependent $R_s(T)$ for the metallic samples show signatures of spin or charge density wave transitions with abrupt changes in $R_s$. Thermal hysteresis between cooling and warming measurements across the transition indicates a first order transition. For the most metallic sample $R_s(T)$ data at low temperatures follow a $T^2$ behaviour suggesting normal Fermi liquid behaviour.

Heat capacity evidence for proximity to the Kitaev QSL in A$_2$IrO$_3$ ($A =$ Na, Li)

The honeycomb lattice iridates $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A =$ Na, Li) are candidates for realization of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model although their proximity to Kitaev's quantum Spin-Liquid (QSL) is still debated. We report on heat capacity $C$ and entropy $S_{mag}$ for $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A =$ Na, Li) in the temperature range $0.075~{\rm K}\leq T \leq 155$~K\@. We find a well separated two-peak structure for the magnetic heat capacity $C_{mag}$ for both materials and $S_{mag}$ for Na$_2$IrO$_3$ shows a shoulder between the peaks with a value close to ${1\over 2}$Rln$2$. These features signal the fractionalization of spins into Majornana Fermions close to Kitaev's QSL [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 115122 (2015); Phys. Rev. B {\bf 93}, 174425 (2016).]. These results provide the first thermodynamic evidence that $A_2$IrO$_3$ are situated close to the Kitaev QSL. Additionally we measure the high temperature $T\leq 1000$~K magnetic susceptibility $χ$ and estimate the Weiss temperature $θ$ in the true paramagnetic state. We find $θ\approx -127$~K and $-105$~K, for Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$, respectively.

The magnetic Hamiltonian and phase diagram of the quantum spin liquid Ca10Cr7O28

A spin liquid is a new state of matter with topological order where the spin moments continue to fluctuate coherently down to the lowest temperatures rather than develop static long-range magnetic order as found in conventional magnets. For spin liquid behavior to arise in a material the magnetic Hamiltonian must be "frustrated" where the combination of lattice geometry, interactions and anisotropies gives rise to competing spin arrangements in the ground state. Theoretical Hamiltonians which produce spin liquids are spin ice, the Kitaev honeycomb model and the Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet. Spin liquid behavior however in real materials is rare because they can only approximate these Hamiltonians and often have weak higher order terms that destroy the spin liquid state. Ca10Cr7O28 is a new quantum spin liquid with magnetic Cr5+ ions that possess quantum spin number S=1/2. The spins are entirely dynamic in the ground state and the excitation spectrum is broad and diffuse as is typical of spinons which are the excitations of a spin liquid. In this paper we determine the Hamiltonian of Ca10Cr7O28 using inelastic neutron scattering under high magnetic field to induce a ferromagnetic ground state and spin-wave excitations that can be fitted to extract the interactions. We further explore the phase diagram by using inelastic neutron scattering and heat capacity measurements and establish the boundaries of the spin liquid phase as a function of magnetic field and temperature. Our results show that Ca10Cr7O28 consists of distorted kagome bilayers with several isotropic ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions where unexpectedly the ferromagnetic interactions are stronger than the antiferromagnetic ones. This complex Hamiltonian does not correspond to any known spin liquid model and points to new directions in the search for quantum spin liquid behavior.

Crystal growth, structure and magnetic properties of Ca10Cr7O28

A detailed diffraction study of Ca10Cr7O28 is presented which adds significant new insights into the structural and magnetic properties of this compound. A new crystal structure type was used where the a and b axes are doubled compared to previous models providing a more plausible structure where all crystallographic sites are fully occupied. The presence of two different valences of chromium was verified and the locations of the magnetic Cr5+ and non-magnetic Cr6+ ions were identified. The Cr5+ ions have spin-1/2 and form distorted kagome bilayers which are stacked in an ABC arrangement along the c axis. These results lay the foundation for understanding of the quantum spin liquid behavior in Ca10Cr7O28 which has recently been reported in [C. Balz et al., Nature Physics, 12, 942 (2016)].

Spin liquid like Raman signatures in hyperkagome iridate Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$

Combining Raman scattering measurements with mean field calculations of the Raman response we show that Kitaev-like magnetic exchange is dominant in the hyperkagome iridate Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$. In the measurements we observe a broad Raman band at $\sim$~3500 cm$^{-1}$ with a band-width $\sim 1700$~cm$^{-1}$. Calculations of the Raman response of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the hyperkagome lattice shows that the experimental observations are consistent with calculated Raman response where Kitaev exchange interaction ($J_K$) is much larger than the Heisenberg term J$_1$ ($J_1/J_K \sim 0.1$). A comparison with the theoretical model gives an estimate of the Kitaev exchange interaction parameter.

Tracking local magnetic dynamics via high-energy charge excitations in a relativistic Mott insulator

We use time- and energy-resolved optical spectroscopy to investigate the coupling of electron-hole excitations to the magnetic environment in the relativistic Mott insulator Na$_2$IrO$_3$. We show that, on the picosecond timescale, the photoinjected electron-hole pairs delocalize on the hexagons of the Ir lattice via the formation of quasi-molecular orbital (QMO) excitations and the exchange of energy with the short-range-ordered zig-zag magnetic background. The possibility of mapping the magnetic dynamics, which is characterized by typical frequencies in the THz range, onto high-energy (1-2 eV) charge excitations provides a new platform to investigate, and possibly control, the dynamics of magnetic interactions in correlated materials with strong spin-orbit coupling, even in the presence of complex magnetic phases.

Large Magnetocaloric effect and magnetic phase transitions in Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$

We present combined experimental and theoretical investigations on the magnetic and magnetocaloric behavior of Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The relative cooling power (RCP) which quantifies the usefulness of a magnetocaloric (MC) material is estimated to be $\approx 300$ J/Kg near the ferromagnetic transition at $T_C \approx 195$ K. This RCP is comparable to the best known MC materials. Additionally, the magnetic entropy change has a broad profile ($T_C - 50~{\rm K} < T < T_C + 50~{\rm K}$) leading to an enhancement in the working-range of temperatures for magnetocaloric based cooling. These features make Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$ a superior magnetocaloric material compared for example, to the nonmagnetic counterpart Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$. We identify the mechanism for the enhanced RCP which can guide search for future MC materials.

Physical realization of a quantum spin liquid based on a novel frustration mechanism

Unlike conventional magnets where the magnetic moments are partially or completely static in the ground state, in a quantum spin liquid they remain in collective motion down to the lowest temperatures. The importance of this state is that it is coherent and highly entangled without breaking local symmetries. Such phenomena is usually sought in simple lattices where antiferromagnetic interactions and/or anisotropies that favor specific alignments of the magnetic moments are "frustrated" by lattice geometries incompatible with such order e.g. triangular structures. Despite an extensive search among such compounds, experimental realizations remain very few. Here we describe the investigation of a novel, unexplored magnetic system consisting of strong ferromagnetic and weaker antiferromagnetic isotropic interactions as realized by the compound Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$. Despite its exotic structure we show both experimentally and theoretically that it displays all the features expected of a quantum spin liquid including coherent spin dynamics in the ground state and the complete absence of static magnetism.

First-order magneto-structural transition in single crystals of the honeycomb lattice Ruthenate Li$_{2}$RuO$_3$

Li$_2$RuO$_3$ is known to crystallize in either $C2/m$ or $P2_1/m$ structures at room temperature. We report the first single crystal growth of Li$_2$RuO$_3$ and Na substituted crystals (Li$_{0.95}$Na$_{0.05}$)$_{2}$RuO$_3$ crystallizing in the $P2_1/m$ structure where a magneto-structural transition is observed at high temperatures. Using high temperature ($T \leq 1000$~K) magnetic susceptibility $χ$ measurements we study the magnetic anisotropy across the magneto-structural transition. Our results show for the first time that for Li$_2$RuO$_3$ the magnetic and structural transitions most likely occur at slightly different temperatures. The structural transition which is first order-like occurs first ($T \approx 570$~K) and drives the magnetic transition ($T \approx 540$~K). Rather surprisingly, just $5\%$ Na substitution for Li affects the magneto-structural transition in an interesting way. The first order transition temperature stays $\approx 540$~K, the magnetic anisotropy is reversed, and the Ru-Ru dimerization pattern changes from two short and four long Ru-Ru bonds per honeycomb in an armchair pattern for Li$_2$RuO$_3$ to four short and two long bonds per honeycomb in (Li$_{0.95}$Na$_{0.05}$)$_{2}$RuO$_3$ which can be viewed as two inter-penetrating armchair patterns.

Raman Signatures of Strong Kitaev Exchange Correlations in (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ : Experiments and Theory

Inelastic light scattering studies on single crystals of (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ ($x = 0, 0.05$ and $0.15$) show a polarization independent broad band at $\sim $~2750 cm$^{-1}$ with a large band-width $\sim 1800$~cm$^{-1}$. For Na$_2$IrO$_3$ the broad band is seen for temperatures $ \leq 200$~K and persists inside the magnetically ordered state. For Li doped samples, the intensity of this mode increases, shifts to lower wave-numbers and persists to higher temperatures. Such a mode has recently been predicted (Knolle et.al.) as a signature of the Kitaev spin liquid. We assign the observation of the broad band to be a signature of strong Kitaev-exchange correlations. The fact that the broad band persists even inside the magnetically ordered state suggests that dynamically fluctuating moments survive even below $T_{N}$. This is further supported by our mean field calculations. The Raman response calculated in mean field theory shows that the broad band predicted for the spin liquid state survives in the magnetically ordered state near the zigzag-spin liquid phase boundary. A comparison with the theoretical model gives an estimate of the Kitaev exchange interaction parameter to be $J_K\approx 57$~meV.

The H-T and P-T phase diagram of the superconducting phase in Pd:Bi$_2$Te$_3$

We study the magnetic field vs temperature ($H$--$T$) and pressure vs temperature ($P$--$T$) phase diagram of the $T_c \approx 5.5$~K superconducting phase in Pd$_x$Bi$_2$Te$_3$ ($x \approx 1$) using electrical resistivity versus temperature measurements at various applied magnetic fields ($H$) and magnetic susceptibility versus temperature measurements at various applied magnetic fields ($H$) and pressure ($P$). The $H$--$T$ phase diagram has an initial upward curvature as observed in some unconventional superconductors. The critical field extrapolated to $T = 0$~K is $H_c (0) \approx 6$--$10$~kOe. The $T_c$ is suppressed approximately linearly with pressure at a rate $dT_c/dP \approx -0.28$~K/GPa.
