The Brauer group of desingularization of moduli spaces of vector bundles over a curve

Let C be an irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least two, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a fixed line bundle L on C, let M_C(r,L) be the coarse moduli space of semistable vector bundles E over C of rank r and determinant L. We show that the Brauer group of any desingularization of M_C(r, L)$ is trivial.

Brauer group of moduli of principal bundles over a curve

Let $G$ be a semisimple linear algebraic group over the field $\mathbb C$, and let $C$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective curve of genus at least three. We compute the Brauer group of the smooth locus of the moduli space of semistable principal $G$--bundles over $C$. We also compute the Brauer group of the moduli stack of principal $G$--bundles over $C$.

Comparison of fundamental group schemes of a projective variety and an ample hypersurface

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field, and let $L$ be an ample line bundle over $X$. We prove that for any smooth hypersurface $D$ on $X$ in the complete linear system $| L^{\otimes d}|$, the inclusion map $D\hookrightarrow X$ induces an isomorphism of fundamental group schemes, provided $d$ is sufficiently large and $\dim X \geq 3$. If $\dim X = 2$, and $d$ is sufficiently large, then the induced homomorphism of fundamental group schemes remains surjective. We give an example to show that the homomorphism of fundamental group schemes induced by the inclusion map of a reduced ample curve in a smooth projective surface is not surjective in general.

Extension of structure groups of principal bundles in positive characteristic

In this article we study the behaviour of semistable principal $G$-bundles over a smooth projective variety $X$ under the extension of structure groups in positive characteristic. We extend some results of Ramanan-Ramanathan \cite{Ramanan-Ramanathan} on rationality of instability flags and show that the associated vector bundles via representations of $G$ are not too unstable and the instability can be bounded by a constant independent of semistable bundles. As a consequence of this the boundedness of the set of isomorphism classes of semistable $G$-bundles with fixed degree and Chern classes is proven.

Maximal subbundles and Gromov invariants

In this article we explicitly compute the number of maximal subbundles of rank $k$ of a generically stable bundle of rank $r$ and degree $d$ over a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g\ge 2$ over $\C$, when the dimension of the quot scheme of maximal subbundles is zero. Our method is to describe the this number purely in terms of the Gromov invariants of the Grassmannian and then use the formula of Vafa and Intriligator to compute them.

Parabolic reductions of principal bundles

In this paper we describe the structure of the space of parabolic reductions, and their compactifications, of principal $G$-bundles over a smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. We first prove estimates for the dimensions of moduli spaces of stable maps to the twisted flag varieties $E/P$ and Hilbert schemes of closed subschemes of $E/P$ with same Hilbert polynomials as that of a $P$-reductions of $E$. This generalizes the earlier results of Mihnea Popa and Mike Roth to connected reductive groups and the results of Y. I. Holla and M. S. Narasimhan to the case of non-minimal sections. We then prove irreducibility and generic smoothness of the space of reductions for large numerical constraints, using the above result and the methods of G. Harder. We also study these space in more detail for generically stable $G$-bundles. As a consequence we can generalize the lower bound results of H. Lange to $G$.

Topology of Quadric Bundles

This paper begins with a description of cohomological invariants of non-degenerate quadric bundles, in terms of the cohomology rings of the classifying spaces of the general orthogonal groups. Following this, the Main Theorem of the paper determines the behavior of these invariants under the Gysin boundary map, when a quadric bundle degenerates over a divisor.

Characteristic Classes for GO(2n,C)

The complex Lie group GO(2n,C) by definition consists of all complex matrices A of size 2n, such that A times transpose(A) is a non-zero scalar. In this paper we determine explicitly the singular cohomology ring of the classifying space BGO(2n,C) with mod 2 coefficients, in terms of generators and relations. The method consists of analysing a certain derivation on the cohomology ring of BO(2n) (which is a polynomial ring in the Stiefel-Whitney classes) via a Koszul complex, and using this to `solve' the Gysin sequence for the bundle BO(2n) over BGO(2n,C).

Poincaré polynomial of the moduli spaces of parabolic bundles

In this paper we use Weil conjectures (Deligne's theorem) to calculate the Betti numbers of the moduli spaces of semi-stable parabolic bundles on a curve. The quasi parabolic analogue of the Siegel formula, together with the method of Harder-Narasimhan filtration gives us a recursive formula for the Poincaré polynomials of the moduli. We solve the recursive formula by the method of Zagier, to give the Poincaré polynomial in a closed form. We also give explicit tables of Betti numbers in small rank, and genera.
