Spectral Analysis of Non-unitary Two-phase Quantum Walks in One Dimension

It is recently shown by Asahara-Funakawa-Seki-Tanaka that existing index theory for chirally symmetric (discrete-time) quantum walks can be extended to the setting of non-unitary quantum walks. More precisely, they consider a certain non-unitary variant of the two-phase split-step quantum walk as a concrete one-dimensional example, and give a complete classification of the associated index in their study. Note, however, that it remains uncertain whether or not their index gives a lower bound for the number of so-called topologically protected bound states unlike the setting of unitary quantum walks. In fact, the spectrum of a non-unitary operator can be any subset of the complex plane, and so the definition of such bound states is ambiguous in the non-unitary case. The purpose of the present article is to show that the simple use of transfer matrices naturally allows us to obtain an explicit formula for a topologically bound state associated with the non-unitary split-step quantum walk model mentioned above.

Index Theorems for One-dimensional Chirally Symmetric Quantum Walks with Asymptotically Periodic Parameters

We focus on index theory for chirally symmetric discrete-time quantum walks on the one-dimensional integer lattice. Such a discrete-time quantum walk model can be characterised as a pair of a unitary self-adjoint operator $\varGamma$ and a unitary time-evolution operator $U,$ satisfying the chiral symmetry condition $U^* = \varGamma U \varGamma.$ The significance of this index theory lies in the fact that the index we assign to the pair $(\varGamma,U)$ gives a lower bound for the number of symmetry protected edge-states associated with the time-evolution $U.$ The symmetry protection of edge-states is one of the important features of the bulk-edge correspondence. The purpose of the present paper is to revisit the well-known bulk-edge correspondence for the split-step quantum walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice. The existing mathematics literature makes use of a fundamental assumption, known as the $2$-phase condition, but we completely replace it by the so-called asymptotically periodic assumption in this article. This generalisation heavily relies on analysis of some topological invariants associated with Toeplitz operators.

The Witten index for one-dimensional split-step quantum walks under the non-Fredholm condition

It is recently shown that a split-step quantum walk possesses a chiral symmetry, and that a certain well-defined index can be naturally assigned to it. The index is a well-defined Fredholm index if and only if the associated unitary time-evolution operator has spectral gaps at both $+1$ and $-1.$ In this paper we extend the existing index formula for the Fredholm case to encompass the non-Fredholm case (i.e., gapless case). We make use of a natural extension of the Fredholm index to the non-Fredholm case, known as the Witten index. The aim of this paper is to fully classify the Witten index of the split-step quantum walk by employing the spectral shift function for a rank one perturbation of a fourth order difference operator. It is also shown in this paper that the Witten index can take half-integer values in the non-Fredholm case.

The bulk-edge correspondence for the split-step quantum walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice

Suzuki's split-step quantum walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice can be naturally viewed as a chirally symmetric quantum walk. Given the unitary time-evolution of such a chirally symmetric quantum walk, we can separately introduce well-defined indices for the eigenvalues $\pm 1.$ The bulk-edge correspondence for Suzuki's split-step quantum walk is twofold. Firstly, we show that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues $\pm 1$ coincide with the absolute values of the associated indices. Note that this can be viewed as the symmetry protection of bound states, and that the indices we consider are robust in the sense that these depend only on the asymptotic behaviour of the parameters of the given model. Secondly, we show that that such bound states exhibit exponential decay at spatial infinity.

The Witten Index for One-dimensional Non-unitary Quantum Walks with Gapless Time-evolution

Recent developments in the index theory of discrete-time quantum walks allow us to assign a certain well-defined supersymmetric index to a pair of a unitary time-evolution $U$ and a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-grading operator $\varGamma$ satisfying the chiral symmetry condition $U^* = \varGamma U \varGamma.$ In this paper, this index theory will be extended to encompass non-unitary $U$. The existing literature for unitary $U$ makes use of the indispensable assumption that $U$ is essentially gapped; that is, we require that the essential spectrum of $U$ contains neither $-1$ nor $+1$ to define the associated index. It turns out that this assumption is no longer necessary, if the given time-evolution $U$ is non-unitary. As a concrete example, we shall consider a well-known non-unitary quantum walk model on the one-dimensional integer lattice, introduced by Mochizuki-Kim-Obuse.

A Constructive Approach to Topological Invariants for One-dimensional Strictly Local Operators

In this paper we shall focus on one-dimensional strictly local operators, the notion of which naturally arises in the context of discrete-time quantum walks on the one-dimensional integer lattice. In particular, we give an elementary constructive approach to the following two topological invariants associated with such operators: Fredholm index and essential spectrum. As a direct application, we shall explicitly compute and fully classify these topological invariants for a well-known quantum walk model.

A Topological Approach to Unitary Spectral Flow via Continuous Enumeration of Eigenvalues

It is a well-known result of T.\,Kato that given a continuous path of square matrices of a fixed dimension, the eigenvalues of the path can be chosen continuously. In this paper, we give an infinite-dimensional analogue of this result, which naturally arises in the context of the so-called unitary spectral flow. This provides a new approach to spectral flow, which seems to be missing from the literature. It is the purpose of the present paper to fill in this gap.

The Witten Index for 1D Supersymmetric Quantum Walks with Anisotropic Coins

Chirally symmetric discrete-time quantum walks possess supersymmetry, and their Witten indices can be naturally defined. The Witten index gives a lower bound for the number of topologically protected bound states. The purpose of this paper is to give a complete classification of the Witten index associated with a one-dimensional split-step quantum walk. It turns out that the Witten index of this model exhibits striking similarity to the one associated with a Dirac particle in supersymmetric quantum mechanics.
