Spin waves excited by hard x-ray transient gratings

Recent progress in ultrafast x-ray sources helped establish x-rays as an important tool for probing lattice and magnetic dynamics initiated by femtosecond optical pulses. Here, we explore the potential of ultrashort hard x-ray pulses for driving magnetic dynamics. We use a transient grating technique in which a spatially periodic x-ray excitation pattern gives rise to material excitations at a well-defined wave vector, whose dynamics are monitored via diffraction of an optical probe pulse. The excitation of a ferrimagnetic gadolinium bismuth iron garnet film placed in an external tilted magnetic field by x-rays at the Gd L3 edge results in both magnetic and non-magnetic transient gratings whose contributions to the diffracted signal are separated by polarization analysis. We observe the magnetization precession at both longitudinal acoustic and spin wave frequencies. An analysis with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation indicates that the magnetization precession is driven by strain resulting from thermal expansion induced by absorbed x-rays. The results establish x-ray transient gratings as a tool for driving coherent phonons and magnons, with the potential of accessing wave vectors across the entire Brillouin zone.

Ultrafast light-induced formation of a metastable hidden state in bismuth vanadate

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO$_4$) is a key photocatalyst for solar fuel applications, yet fundamental questions remain regarding the nature of photogenerated polaronic states and the lattice dynamics that govern its light-to-chemical pathways. Here, we use femtosecond optical pump-X-ray probe measurements to track the photoinduced electronic and structural dynamics in BiVO$_4$ across multiple length and time scales. Transient X-ray absorption spectroscopy captures sub-picosecond electron localization within VO$_4$ tetrahedra, consistent with small polaron formation, whereas time-resolved X-ray diffraction reveals a slower, multi-picosecond lattice reorganization into a hidden photoexcited state that is structurally distinct from both the monoclinic ground state and the high-temperature tetragonal phase. Supported by density functional theory, we show that hole-lattice interactions dynamically reduce the ground state monoclinic distortion, stabilizing the hidden state. Our results demonstrate that electron- and hole-lattice coupling jointly shape the excited state landscape, with implications for carrier transport, interfacial energetics, and light-to-chemical energy conversion pathways.

Metastable structure of photoexcited WO$_{3}$ determined by the pump--probe extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and constrained thorough search analysis

We have determined the local structure of photoexcited metastable WO$_3$ created 150 ps after 400 nm laser irradiation by the pulse pump--probe L$_3$-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and the constrained thorough search analysis. We have found a highly distorted octahedral local structure with one of the shortest W=O bonds being further shortened to 1.66 Åwhile the other five bonds were elongated even though theoretical calculations predicted the reverse change. We discuss this contradiction and propose a possible structure for the metastable state.

Damping of spinful excitons in LaCoO$_3$ by thermal fluctuations: Theory and experiment

We present Co $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of bulk LaCoO$_3$ across the thermally-induced spin-state crossover around 100~K. Owing to a high energy resolution of 25~meV, we observe unambiguously the dispersion of the intermediate-spin (IS) excitations in the low temperature regime. Approaching the intermediate temperature regime, the IS excitations are damped and the bandwidth is reduced. The observed behavior can be well described by a model of mobile IS excitons with strong attractive interaction, which we solve using dynamical mean-field theory for hard-core bosons. Our results provide a detailed mechanism of how high-spin (HS) and IS excitations interact to establish the physical properties of cobaltite perovskites.

Ultrafast demagnetization of Pt magnetic moment in L1${}_0$-FePt probed by hard x-ray free electron laser

We demonstrate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a 5d transition metal using circularly-polarized x-ray free electron laser in the hard x-ray region. A decay time of light-induced demagnetization of L1${}_0$-FePt was determined to be $τ_\textrm{Pt} = 0.6\ \textrm{ps}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L${}_3$ edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicated the decay time for total magnetization as $τ_\textrm{total} = 0.1\ \textrm{ps}$. A transient magnetic state with the photo-modulated magnetic coupling between the 3d and 5d elements is firstly demonstrated.
