Electronically competing phases and their magnetic field dependence in electron-doped nonsuperconducting and superconducting Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4

We present comprehensive neutron scattering studies of nonsuperconducting and superconducting electron-doped Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4(PLCCO). At zero field, the transition from antiferromagnetic (AF) as-grown PLCCO to superconductivity without static antiferromagnetism can be achieved by annealing the sample in pure Ar at different temperatures, which also induces an epitaxial (Pr,La,Ce)2O3 phase as an impurity. When the superconductivity first appears in PLCCO, a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) spin-density-wave (SDW) order is also induced, and both coexist with the residual three-dimensional (3D) AF state. A magnetic field applied along the [-1,1,0] direction parallel to the CuO2 plane induces a ``spin-flop'' transition, where the noncollinear AF spin structure of PLCCO is transformed into a collinear one. The spin-flop transition is continuous in semiconducting PLCCO, but gradually becomes sharp with increasing doping and the appearance of superconductivity. A c-axis aligned magnetic field that suppresses the superconductivity also enhances the quasi-2D SDW order at (0.5,0.5,0) for underdoped PLCCO. However, there is no effect on the 3D AF order in either superconducting or nonsuperconducting samples. Since the same field along the [-1,1,0] direction in the CuO2 plane has no (or little) effect on the superconductivity, (0.5,0.5,0) and (Pr,La,Ce)2O3 impurity positions, we conclude that the c-axis field-induced effect is intrinsic to PLCCO and arises from the suppression of superconductivity.

Intrinsic Hall response of the CuO2 planes in a chain-plane-composite system of YBa2Cu3Oy

The Hall coefficient is measured in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ untwinned single crystals for a wide range of doping. We show that the Hall conductivity and the Hall angle of the {\it CuO$_2$ planes} in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ can be extracted from measurable transport properties regardless of the conduction of the Cu-O chains nor the in-plane anisotropy of the CuO$_2$ planes. The present analysis allows us to discuss the genuine Hall effect in the CuO$_2$ planes alone in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ without any complications due to the Cu-O chains.

Transport and magnetic properties of GdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} single crystals: A cobalt oxide with square-lattice CoO_2 planes over a wide range of electron and hole doping

Single crystals of the layered perovskite GdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} (GBCO) have been grown by the floating-zone method, and their transport, magnetic, and structural properties have been studied in detail over a wide range of oxygen contents. The obtained data are used to establish a rich phase diagram centered at the "parent'' compound GdBaCo_{2}O_{5.5} -- an insulator with Co ions in the 3+ state. An attractive feature of GBCO is that it allows a precise and continuous doping of CoO_{2} planes with either electrons or holes, spanning a wide range from the charge-ordered insulator at 50% electron doping (x=0) to the undoped band insulator (x=0.5), and further towards the heavily hole-doped metallic state. This continuous doping is clearly manifested in the behavior of thermoelectric power which exhibits a spectacular divergence with approaching x=0.5, where it reaches large absolute values and abruptly changes its sign. At low temperatures, the homogeneous distribution of doped carriers in GBCO becomes unstable, and both the magnetic and transport properties point to an intriguing nanoscopic phase separation. We also find that throughout the composition range the magnetic behavior in GBCO is governed by a delicate balance between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions, which can be easily affected by temperature, doping, or magnetic field, bringing about FM-AF transitions and a giant magnetoresistance (MR) phenomenon. An exceptionally strong uniaxial anisotropy of the Co spins, which dramatically simplifies the possible spin arrangements, together with the possibility of continuous ambipolar doping turn GBCO into a model system for studying the competing magnetic interactions, nanoscopic phase separation and accompanying magnetoresistance phenomena.

Achieving fast oxygen diffusion in perovskites by cation ordering

The oxygen-exchange behavior has been studied in half-doped manganese and cobalt perovskite oxides. We have found that the oxygen diffusivity in Gd_{0.5}Ba_{0.5}MnO_{3-δ} can be enhanced by orders of magnitude by inducing crystallographic ordering among lanthanide and alkali-earth ions in the A-site sublattice. Transformation of a simple cubic perovskite, with randomly occupied A-sites, into a layered crystal GdBaMn_2O_{5+x} (or isostructural GdBaCo_2O_{5+x} for cobalt oxide) with alternating lanthanide and alkali-earth planes reduces the oxygen bonding strength and provides disorder-free channels for ion motion, pointing to an efficient way to design new ionic conductors.

Electronic inhomogeneity and competing phases in electron-doped superconducting Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4

We use neutron scattering to demonstrate that electron-doped superconducting Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4 in the underdoped regime is electronically phase separated in the ground state, showing the coexistence of a superconducting phase with a three-dimensional antiferromagnetically ordered phase and a quasi-two-dimensional spin density wave modulation. The Neel temperature of both antiferromagnetic phases decreases linearly with increasing superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and vanishes when optimal superconductivity is achieved. These results indicate that the electron-doped copper oxides are close to a quantum critical point, where the delicate energetic balance between different competing states leads to microscopic heterogeneity.

Magic Doping Fractions in High-Temperature Superconductors

We report hole-doping dependence of the in-plane resistivity ρ_{ab} in a cuprate superconductor La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}, carefully examined using a series of high-quality single crystals. Our detailed measurements find a tendency towards charge ordering at particular rational hole doping fractions of 1/16, 3/32, 1/8, and 3/16. This observation appears to suggest a specific form of charge order and is most consistent with the recent theoretical prediction of the checkerboard-type ordering of the Cooper pairs at rational doping fractions x = (2m+1)/2^n, with integers m and n.

Evolution of the Hall Coefficient and the Peculiar Electronic Structure of the Cuprate Superconductors

Although the Hall coefficient R_H is an informative transport property of metals and semiconductors, its meaning in the cuprate superconductors has been ambiguous because of its unusual characteristics. Here we show that a systematic study of R_H in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals over a wide doping range establishes a qualitative understanding of its peculiar evolution, which turns out to reflect a two-component nature of the electronic structure caused by an unusual development of the Fermi surface recently uncovered by photoemission experiments.

Electronic Phase Diagram of High-T_c Cuprate Superconductors from a Mapping of the In-Plane Resistivity Curvature

We propose that Resistivity Curvature Mapping (RCM) based on the in-plane resistivity data is a useful way to objectively draw an electronic phase diagrams of high-T_c cuprates, where various crossovers are important. In particular, the pseudogap crossover line can be conveniently determined by RCM. We show experimental phase diagrams obtained by RCM for Bi_{2}Sr_{2-z}La_{z}CuO_{6+δ}, La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}, and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, and demonstrate the universal nature of the pseudogap crossover. Intriguingly, the electronic crossover near optimum doping depicted by RCM appears to occur rather abruptly, suggesting that the quantum critical regime, if exists, must be very narrow.

Evidence for CuO conducting band splitting in the nodal direction of Bi-2212

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with ultimate momentum resolution we have explicitly resolved the bilayer splitting in the nodal direction of Bi-2212. The splitting is observed in a wide doping range and, within the experimental uncertainty, its size does not depend on doping. The value of splitting derived from the experiment is in good agreement with that from band structure calculations which implies the absence of any electronic confinement to single planes within bilayers of Bi-2212. Other consequences of this finding are also discussed.

Electron Localization in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and the Role of Stripes

The normal-state in-plane resistivity (ρ_{ab}) is measured in lightly Zn-doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) crystals with 0.06 \leq x \leq 0.17 to systematically study the localization behavior. It is found that the localization temperature, T_{loc}, where ρ_{ab}(T) turns from metallic (dρ_{ab}/dT>0) to insulating (dρ_{ab}/dT<0), shows an anomalous enhancement at x=0.12. Intriguingly, the doping dependence of T_{loc} in Zn-doped LSCO is found to be similar to that of Zn-free LSCO where superconductivity is suppressed by a high magnetic field. This suggests that the mechanism of the localization is the same in lightly Zn-doped LSCO and in Zn-free LSCO under magnetic field, and in both cases it is probably caused by the freezing of the electrons into an inhomogeneous state, which leads to the spin stripes at low temperatures.

Spin reorientation and in-plane magnetoresistance of lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} in magnetic fields up to 55 T

The magnetoresistance (MR) in the in-plane resistivity is measured in magnetic fields up to 55 T in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} in the Néel state (x = 0.01) and in the spin-glass state (x = 0.03) using high-quality untwinned single crystals. In both cases, a large negative MR is observed to appear when the magnetic order is established. For x = 0.01, it is found that the MR is indicative of a one-step transition into a high-field weak-ferromagnetic state at around 20 T when the magnetic field is applied from the spin easy axis (b axis), which means that there is no spin-flop transition in the Néel state of this material; this is contrary to a previous report, but is natural in light of the peculiar in-plane magnetic susceptibility anisotropy recently found in this system. In the spin-glass state, we observe that the large (up to \sim20%) negative MR saturates at around 40 T, and this MR is found to be essentially isotropic when the magnetic field is rotated within the ab plane. Our data show that the large negative MR is inherent to LSCO in a magnetically ordered state, in which the weak-ferromagnetic (WF) moment becomes well-defined; we discuss that the observed MR is essentially due to the reorientation of the WF moments towards the magnetic field direction both in the Néel state and in the spin-glass state.

Examination of the c-axis resistivity of Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} in magnetic fields up to 58 T

We measure the magnetic-field dependence of the c-axis resistivity, ρ_c(H), in a series of Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} (BSLCO) single crystals for a wide range of doping using pulsed magnetic fields up to 58 T. The behavior of ρ_c(H) is examined in light of the recent determination of the upper critical field H_{c2} for this material using Nernst effect measurements. We find that the peak in ρ_c(H) shows up at a field H_p that is much lower than H_{c2} and there is no discernable feature in ρ_c(H) at H_{c2}. Intriguingly, H_p shows a doping dependence similar to that of T_c, and there is an approximate relation k_{B}T_c \simeq {1/2}gμ_{B}H_p. Moreover, we show that the data for the lowest-T_c sample can be used to estimate the pseudogap closing field H_{pg}, but the method to estimate H_{pg} proposed by Shibauchi {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 5763 (2001)] must be modified to apply to the BSLCO system.

Quasiparticle dynamics and in-plane anisotropy in $Y Ba_2 Cu_3 O_y$ system near onset of superconductivity

We report on an infrared study of carrier dynamics within the CuO$_{2}$ planes in heavily underdoped detwinned single crystals of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$% _{y}$. In an effort to reveal the electronic structure near the onset of superconductivity, we investigate the strong anisotropy of the electromagnetic response due to an enhancement of the scattering rate along the a-axis. We propose that the origin of this anisotropy is related to a modulation of the electron density within the CuO$_{2}$ planes.

Metal-to-Insulator Crossover in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} Probed by Low-Temperature Quasiparticle Heat Transport

It was recently demonstrated that in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} the magnetic-field (H) dependence of the low-temperature thermal conductivity κup to 16 T reflects whether the normal state is a metal or an insulator. We measure the H dependence of κin YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (YBCO) at subkelvin temperatures for a wide doping range, and find that at low doping the κ(H) behavior signifies the change in the ground state in this system as well. Surprisingly, the critical doping is found to be located deeply inside the underdoped region, about the hole doping of 0.07 hole/Cu; this critical doping is apparently related to the stripe correlations as revealed by the in-plane resistivity anisotropy.

Doping dependence of charge-transfer excitations in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the doping dependence of charge-transfer excitations in $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$. The mome ntum dependence of these charge excitations are studied over the whole Brillouin zone in underdoped (x=0.05) and optimally doped (x=0.17) samples, and compared with that of the undoped (x=0) sample. We observe a large change in the RIXS spectra between the x=0 and x=0.17 sample, while the RIXS spectra of the x=0.05 sample are similar to that of the x=0 sample. The most prominent effect of doped-holes on the charge excitation spectra is the appearance of a continuum of intensity, which exhibits a strong momentum-dependence below 2 eV. For the x=0.17 sample, some of the spectral weight from the lowest-lying charge-transfer excitation of the undoped compound is transferred to the continuum intensity below the gap, in agreement with earlier optical studies. However, the higher energy charge-transfer excitation carries significant spectral weight even for the x=0.17 sample. The doping dependence of the dispersion of this charge-transfer excitation is also discussed and compared with recent theoretical calculations.

Magnetic order in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

We study long wavelength magnetic excitations in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x < 0.03) detwinned crystals. The lowest energy magnetic anisotropy induced gap can be understood in terms of the antisymmetric spin interaction inside the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. The second magnetic resonace, analyzed in terms of in-plane spin anisotropy, shows unconventional behavior within the AF state and led to the discovery of collective spin excitations pertaining to a field induced magnetically ordered state. This state persists in a 9 T field to more than 100 K above the Néel temperature in x = 0.01.

Molecular orbital excitations in cuprates

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering studies of electronic excitations in a wide variety of cuprate compounds. Specifically, we focus on the charge-transfer type excitation of an electron from a bonding molecular orbital to an antibonding molecular orbital in a copper oxygen plaquette. Both the excitation energy and the amount of dispersion are found to increase significantly as the copper oxygen bond-length is reduced. We also find that the estimated bond-length dependence of the hopping integral t_pd is much stronger than that expected from tight-binding theory.
