Kinetic renormalization of auroral turbulence

Driven-dissipative systems often exhibit self-organization in the form of coherent dissipative structures. However, observing such critical states in natural plasmas remains elusive, leading to the traditional view that the fine structure of Earth's auroral ionosphere is shaped by local turbulent flows. Here we report the discovery of a self-organizing regime in Earth's ionosphere. We identify this by modeling the sum of saturation electric fields in the turbulent auroral electrojets as a stochastic variable that renormalizes into noise-enabled transport, via explicitly derived Bohm diffusion. This constitutes an effective field-theory for Farley-Buneman turbulence in the Martin-Siggia-Rose formalism for renormalization group theory, for which we provide strong empirical evidence. Using a composite radar-GPS power spectrum of plasma turbulence, we resolve a scale-invariant cascade that exhibits a characteristic kinetic Alfv\'{e}n $k^{-8/3}$-signature across four orders of magnitude in $k$. What is more, a large statistical analysis of how the turbulence responds to magnetospheric driving reveals a clear tendency for the observed number density of turbulent waves to scale linearly with driving power, matching the predictions made by our field theory's overdamped equations of motion, which offer closed-form calculations of macroscopic transport relations that are uniquely suitable for sub-grid parameterization in space weather modeling. This establishes geospace storms as opportunities to observe non-equilibrium phase transitions imposing global constraints on collision-dominated systems.

Comparative study of electric currents and energetic particle fluxes in a solar flare and Earth magnetospheric substorm

Magnetic field-line reconnection is a universal plasma process responsible for the conversion of magnetic field energy to the plasma heating and charged particle acceleration. Solar flares and Earth's magnetospheric substorms are two most investigated dynamical systems where magnetic reconnection is believed to be responsible for global magnetic field reconfiguration and energization of plasma populations. Such a reconfiguration includes formation of a long-living current systems connecting the primary energy release region and cold dense conductive plasma of photosphere/ionosphere. In both flares and substorms the evolution of this current system correlates with formation and dynamics of energetic particle fluxes. Our study is focused on this similarity between flares and substorms. Using a wide range of datasets available for flare and substorm investigations, we compare qualitatively dynamics of currents and energetic particle fluxes for one flare and one substorm. We showed that there is a clear correlation between energetic particle bursts (associated with energy release due to magnetic reconnection) and magnetic field reconfiguration/formation of current system. We then discuss how datasets of in-situ measurements in the magnetospheric substorm can help in interpretation of datasets gathered for the solar flare.

On the observer dependence of the Hilbert space near the horizon of black holes

One of the pronounced characteristics of gravity, distinct from other interactions, is that there are no local observables which are independent of the choice of the spacetime coordinates. This property acquires crucial importance in the quantum domain in that the structure of the Hilbert space pertinent to different observers can be drastically different. Such intriguing phenomena as the Hawking radiation and the Unruh effect are all rooted in this feature. As in these examples, the quantum effect due to such observer-dependence is most conspicuous in the presence of an event horizon and there are still many questions to be clarified in such a situation. In this paper, we perform a comprehensive and explicit study of the observer dependence of the quantum Hilbert space of a massless scalar field in the vicinity of the horizon of the Schwarzschild black holes in four dimensions, both in the eternal (two-sided) case and in the physical (one-sided) case created by collapsing matter. Specifically, we compare and relate the Hilbert spaces of the three types of observers, namely (i) the freely falling observer, (ii) the observer who stays at a fixed proper distance outside of the horizon and (iii) the natural observer inside of the horizon analytically continued from outside. The concrete results we obtain have a number of important implications on black hole complementarity pertinent to the quantum equivalence principle and the related firewall phenomenon, on the number of degrees of freedom seen by each type of observer, and on the "thermal-type" spectrum of particles realized in a pure state.

Classical Integrability for Three-point Functions: Cognate Structure at Weak and Strong Couplings

In this paper, we develop a new method of computing three-point functions in the SU(2) sector of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory in the semi-classical regime at weak coupling, which closely parallels the strong coupling analysis. The structure threading two disparate regimes is the so-called monodromy relation, an identity connecting the three-point functions with and without the insertion of the monodromy matrix. We shall show that this relation can be put to use directly for the semi-classical regime, where the dynamics is governed by the classical Landau-Lifshitz sigma model. Specifically, it reduces the problem to a set of functional equations, which can be solved once the analyticity in the spectral parameter space is specified. To determine the analyticity, we develop a new universal logic applicable at both weak and strong couplings. As a result, compact semi-classical formulas are obtained for a general class of three-point functions at weak coupling including the ones whose semi-classical behaviors were not known before. In addition, the new analyticity argument applied to the strong coupling analysis leads to a modification of the integration contour, producing the results consistent with the recent hexagon bootstrap approach. This modification also makes the Frolov-Tseytlin limit perfectly agree with the weak coupling form.

On the singlet projector and the monodromy relation for psu(2, 2|4) spin chains and reduction to subsectors

As a step toward uncovering the relation between the weak and the strong coupling regimes of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory beyond the specral level, we have developed in a previous paper [arXiv:1410.8533] a novel group theoretic interpretation of the Wick contraction of the fields, which allowed us to compute a much more general class of three-point functions in the SU(2) sector, as in the case of strong coupling [arXiv:1312.3727], directly in terms of the determinant representation of the partial domain wall partition funciton. Furthermore, we derived a non-trivial identity for the three point functions with monodromy operators inserted, being the discrete counterpart of the global monodromy condition which played such a crucial role in the computation at strong coupling. In this companion paper, we shall extend our study to the entire ${\rm psu}(2,2|4)$ sector and obtain several important generalizations. They include in particular (i) the manifestly conformally covariant construction, from the basic principle, of the singlet-projection operator for performing the Wick contraction and (ii) the derivation of the monodromy relation for the case of the so-called "harmonic R-matrix", as well as for the usual fundamental R-matrtix. The former case, which is new and has features rather different from the latter, is expected to have important applications. We also describe how the form of the monodromy relation is modified as ${\rm psu}(2,2|4)$ is reduced to its subsectors.

Novel construction and the monodromy relation for three-point functions at weak coupling

In this article, we shall develop and formulate two novel viewpoints and properties concerning the three-point functions at weak coupling in the SU(2) sector of the N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory. One is a double spin-chain formulation of the spin-chain and the associated new interpretation of the operation of Wick contraction. It will be regarded as a skew symmetric pairing which acts as a projection onto a singlet in the entire SO(4) sector, instead of an inner product in the spin-chain Hilbert space. This formalism allows us to study a class of three-point functions of operators built upon more general spin-chain vacua than the special configuration discussed so far in the literature. Furthermore, this new viewpoint has the signicant advantage over the conventional method: In the usual "tailoring" operation, the Wick contraction produces inner products between off-shell Bethe states, which cannot be in general converted into simple expressions. In contrast, our procedure directly produces the so-called partial domain wall partition functions, which can be expressed as determinants. Using this property, we derive simple determinantal representation for a broader class of three-point functions. The second new property uncovered in this work is the non-trivial identity satisfied by the three-point functions with monodromy operators inserted. Generically this relation connects three-point functions of different operators and can be regarded as a kind of Schwinger-Dyson equation. In particular, this identity reduces in the semiclassical limit to the triviality of the product of local monodromies around the vertex operators, which played a crucial role in providing all important global information on the three-point function in the strong coupling regime. This structure may provide a key to the understanding of the notion of "integrability" beyond the spectral level.

Three-point functions in the SU(2) sector at strong coupling

Extending the methods developed in our previous works (arXiv:1110.3949, arXiv:1205.6060), we compute the three-point functions at strong coupling of the non-BPS states with large quantum numbers corresponding to the composite operators belonging to the so-called SU(2) sector in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. This is achieved by the semi-classical evaluation of the three-point functions in the dual string theory in the $AdS_3 \times S^3$ spacetime, using the general one-cut finite gap solutions as the external states. In spite of the complexity of the contributions from various parts in the intermediate stages, the final answer for the three-point function takes a remarkably simple form, exhibiting the structure reminiscent of the one obtained at weak coupling. In particular, in the Frolov-Tseytlin limit the result is expressed in terms of markedly similar integrals, however with different contours of integration. We discuss a natural mechanism for introducing additional singularities on the worldsheet without affecting the infinite number of conserved charges, which can modify the contours of integration.

A new integral representation for the scalar products of Bethe states for the XXX spin chain

Based on the method of separation of variables due to Sklyanin, we construct a new integral representation for the scalar products of the Bethe states for the SU(2) XXX spin 1/2 chain obeying the periodic boundary condition. Due to the compactness of the symmetry group, a twist matrix must be introduced at the boundary in order to extract the separated variables properly. Then by deriving the integration measure and the spectrum of the separated variables, we express the inner product of an on-shell and an off-shell Bethe states in terms of a multiple contour integral involving a product of Baxter wave functions. Its form is reminiscent of the integral over the eigenvalues of a matrix model and is expected to be useful in studying the semi-classical limit of the product.

Wave functions and correlation functions for GKP strings from integrability

We develop a general method of computing the contribution of the vertex operators to the semi-classical correlation functions of heavy string states, based on the state-operator correspondence and the integrable structure of the system. Our method requires only the knowledge of the local behavior of the saddle point configuration around each vertex insertion point and can be applied to cases where the precise forms of the vertex operators are not known. As an important application, we compute the contributions of the vertex operators to the three-point functions of the large spin limit of the Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov (GKP) strings in $AdS_3$ spacetime, left unevaluated in our previous work [arXiv:1110.3949] which initiated such a study. Combining with the finite part of the action already computed previously and with the newly evaluated divergent part of the action, we obtain finite three-point functions with the expected dependence of the target space boundary coordinates on the dilatation charge and the spin.

On holographic three point functions for GKP strings from integrability

Adapting the powerful integrability-based formalism invented previously for the calculation of gluon scattering amplitudes at strong coupling, we develop a method for computing the holographic three point functions for the large spin limit of Gubser-Klebanov- Polyakov (GKP) strings. Although many of the ideas from the gluon scattering problem can be transplanted with minor modifications, the fact that the information of the external states is now encoded in the singularities at the vertex insertion points necessitates several new techniques. Notably, we develop a new generalized Riemann bilinear identity, which allows one to express the area integral in terms of appropriate contour integrals in the presence of such singularities. We also give some general discussions on how semiclassical vertex operators for heavy string states should be constructed systematically from the solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

Operator Formulation of Green-Schwarz Superstring in the Semi-Light-Cone Conformal Gauge

In this article we present a comprehensive account of the operator formulation of the Green-Schwarz superstring in the semi-light-cone (SLC) gauge, where the worldsheet conformal invariance is preserved. Starting from the basic action, we systematically study the symmetry structure of the theory in the SLC gauge both in the Lagrangian and the phase space formulations. After quantizing the theory in the latter formulation we construct the quantum Virasoro and the super-Poincare generators and clarify the closure properties of these symmetry algebras. Then by making full use of this knowledge we will be able to construct the BRST-invariant vertex operators which describe the emission and the absorption of the massless quanta and show that they form the appropriate representation of the quantum symmetry algebras. Furthermore, we will construct an exact quantum similarity transformation which connects the SLC gauge and the familiar light-cone (LC) gauge. As an application BRST-invariant DDF operators in the SLC gauge are obtained starting from the corresponding physical oscillators in the LC gauge.

Exact Quantization of a Superparticle in AdS_5 x S^5

As a step toward deeper understanding of the AdS/CFT correspondence, exact quantization of a Brink-Schwarz superparticle in the AdS_5 x S^5 background with Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux is performed from the first principle in the phase space formulation. It includes the construction of the quantum Noether charges for the psu(2,2|4) superconformal symmetry and by solving the superconformal primary conditions we obtain the complete physical spectrum of the system with the explicit wave functions. The spectrum agrees precisely with the supergravity results, including all the Kaluza-Klein excitations. Our method and the result are expected to shed light on the eventual quantization of a superstring in this important background.

Superstring in the pp-wave background with RR flux as a conformal field theory

We provide a concise description of our recent work on the exact conformal field theory (CFT) formulation of the superstring in the pp-wave background with Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux, using the Green-Schwarz formalism in the semi-light-cone conformal gauge. Due to the presence of the RR flux, the left- and the right-moving degrees of freedom on the worldsheet are inherently coupled and this makes the canonical analysis intractable even at the classical level. To overcome this difficulty, we develop a phase-space formulation which does not make use of the equations of motion, and construct two independent sets of Virasoro generators classically. Upon quantization, due to the presence of the RR flux, the Virasoro algebra generically develops quantum operator anomalies and only with a judicious choice of normal ordering rescription they cancel between the bosonic and the fermionic contributions. With such properly defined quantum Virasoro generators, one can construct the BRST operators and demonstrate that the BRST cohomology analysis reproduces the physical spectrum previously obtained in the light-cone gauge.

Superstring in the plane-wave background with RR flux as a conformal field theory

We study the type IIB superstring in the plane-wave background with Ramond-Ramond flux and formulate it as an exact conformal field theory in operator formalism. One of the characteristic features of the superstring in a consistent background with RR flux, such as the AdS5xS5 and its plane-wave limit, is that the left- and the right-moving degrees of freedom on the worldsheet are inherently coupled. In the plane-wave case, it is manifested in the well-known fact that the Green-Schwarz formulation of the theory reduces to that of free massive bosons and fermions in the light-cone gauge. This raises the obvious question as to how this feature is reconciled with the underlying conformal symmetry of the string theory. By adopting the semi-light-cone conformal gauge, we will show that, despite the existence of such non-linear left-right couplings, one can construct two independent sets of quantum Virasoro operators in terms of fields obeying the free-field commutation relations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the BRST cohomology analysis reproduces the physical spectrum obtained in the light-cone gauge.

Towards Pure Spinor Type Covariant Description of Supermembrane -- An Approach from the Double Spinor Formalism --

In a previous work, we have constructed a reparametrization invariant worldsheet action from which one can derive the super-Poincare covariant pure spinor formalism for the superstring at the fully quantum level. The main idea was the doubling of the spinor degrees of freedom in the Green-Schwarz formulation together with the introduction of a new compensating local fermionic symmetry. In this paper, we extend this "double spinor" formalism to the case of the supermembrane in 11 dimensions at the classical level. The basic scheme works in parallel with the string case and we are able to construct the closed algebra of first class constraints which governs the entire dynamics of the system. A notable difference from the string case is that this algebra is first order reducible and the associated BRST operator must be constructed accordingly. The remaining problems which need to be solved for the quantization will also be discussed.

Origin of Pure Spinor Superstring

The pure spinor formalism for the superstring, initiated by N. Berkovits, is derived at the fully quantum level starting from a fundamental reparametrization invariant and super-Poincare invariant worldsheet action. It is a simple extension of the Green-Schwarz action with doubled spinor degrees of freedom with a compensating local supersymmetry on top of the conventional kappa-symmetry. Equivalence to the Green-Schwarz formalism is manifest from the outset. The use of free fields in the pure spinor formalism is justified from the first principle. The basic idea works also for the superparticle in 11 dimensions.

Relating Green-Schwarz and Extended Pure Spinor Formalisms by Similarity Transformation

In order to gain deeper understanding of pure-spinor-based formalisms of superstring, an explicit similarity transformation is constructed which provides operator mapping between the light-cone Green-Schwarz (LCGS) formalism and the extended pure spinor (EPS) formalism, a recently proposed generalization of the Berkovits' formalism in an enlarged space. By applying a systematic procedure developed in our previous work, we first construct an analogous mapping in the bosonic string relating the BRST and the light-cone formulations. This provides sufficient insights and allows us to construct the desired mapping in the more intricate case of superstring as well. The success of the construction owes much to the enlarged field space where pure spinor constraints are removed and to the existence of the ``B-ghost'' in the EPS formalism.

Operator Mapping between RNS and Extended Pure Spinor Formalisms for Superstring

An explicit operator mapping in the form of a similarity transformation is constructed between the RNS formalism and an extension of the pure spinor formalism (to be called EPS formalism) recently proposed by the present authors. Due to the enlarged field space of the EPS formalism, where the pure spinor constraints are removed, the mapping is completely well-defined in contrast to the one given previously by Berkovits in the original pure spinor (PS) formalism. This map provides a direct demonstration of the equivalence of the cohomologies of the RNS and the EPS formalisms and is expected to be useful for better understanding of various properties of the PS and EPS formalisms. Furthermore, the method of construction, which makes systematic use of the nilpotency of the BRST charges, should find a variety of applications.
