Soft Hair of Dynamical Black Hole and Hawking Radiation

Soft hair of black hole has been proposed recently to play an important role in the resolution of the black hole information paradox. Recent work has emphasized that the soft modes cannot affect the black hole S-matrix due to Weinberg soft theorems. However as soft hair is generated by supertranslation of geometry which involves an angular dependent shift of time, it must have nontrivial quantum effects. We consider supertranslation of the Vaidya black hole and construct a non-spherical symmetric dynamical spacetime with soft hair. We show that this spacetime admits a trapping horizon and is a dynamical black hole. We find that Hawking radiation is emitted from the trapped horizon of the dynamical black hole. The Hawking radiation has a spectrum which depends on the soft hair of the black hole and this is consistent with the factorization property of the black hole S-matrix.

Memory Effect in Anti-de Sitter Spacetime

The geodesic deviation of a pair of test particles is an natural observable for the gravitational memory effect. Nevertheless in curved spacetime, this observable is plagued with various issues that need to be clarified before one can extract the essential part that is related to the gravitational radiation. In this paper we consider the Anti deSitter space as an example and analyze this observable carefully. We show that by employing the Fermi Normal Coordinates around the geodesic of one of the particles, one can elegantly separate out the curvature contribution of the background spacetime to the geodesic deviation from the contribution of the gravitational wave. The gravitational wave memory obtained this way depends linearly and locally on the retarded metric perturbation caused by the gravitational wave, and, remarkably, it takes on exactly the same formula (1) as in the flat case. To determine the memory, in addition to the standard tail contribution to the gravitational radiation, one need to take into account of the contribution from the reflected gravitational wave off the AdS boundary. For general curved spacetime, our analysis suggests that the use of a certain coordinate system adapted to the local geodesic (e.g. the Fermi normal coordinates system in the AdS case) would allow one to dissect the geodesic deviation of test particles and extract the relevant contribution to define the memory due to gravitational radiation.

Adiabatic Regularization for Gauge Field and the Conformal Anomaly

We construct the adiabatic regularization method for a $U(1)$ gauge field in a conformally flat spacetime by quantizing in the canonical formalism the gauge fixed $U(1)$ theory with mass terms for the gauge fields and the ghost fields. We show that the adiabatic expansion for the mode functions and the adiabatic vacuum can be defined in a similar way using WKB-type solutions as the scalar fields. As an application of the adiabatic method, we compute the trace of the energy momentum tensor and reproduces the known result for the conformal anomaly obtained by the other regularization methods. The availability of the adiabatic expansion scheme for gauge field allows one to study the renormalization of the de-Sitter space maximal superconformal Yang-Mills theory using the adiabatic regularization method.

The IR Obstruction to UV Completion for Dante's Inferno Model with Higher-Dimensional Gauge Theory Origin

We continue our investigation of large field inflation models obtained from higher-dimensional gauge theories, initiated in our previous study arXiv:1407.1951. We focus on Dante's Inferno model which was the most preferred model in our previous analysis. We point out the relevance of the IR obstruction to UV completion, which constrains the form of the potential of the massive vector field, under the current observational upper bound on the tensor to scalar ratio. We also show that in simple examples of the potential arising from DBI action of a D5-brane and that of an NS5-brane that the inflation takes place in the field range which is within the convergence radius of the Taylor expansion. This is in contrast to the well known examples of axion monodromy inflation where inflaton takes place outside the convergence radius of the Taylor expansion. This difference arises from the very essence of Dante's Inferno model that the effective inflaton potential is stretched in the inflaton field direction compared with the potential for the original field.

Dilaton, Screening of the Cosmological Constant and IR-Driven Inflation

It is known that infrared (IR) quantum fluctuations in de Sitter space could break the de Sitter symmetry and generate time dependent observable effects. In this paper, we consider a dilaton-gravity theory. We find that gravitational IR effects lead to a time dependent shift on the vev of the dilaton and results in a screening (temporal) of the cosmological constant/Hubble parameter. In the Einstein frame, the effect is exponentiated and can give rises to a much more notable amount of screening. Taking the dilaton as inflaton, we obtain an inflationary expansion of the slow roll kind. This inflation is driven by the IR quantum effects of de Sitter gravity and does not rely on the use of a slow roll potential. As a result, our model is free from the eta problem which baffles the standard slow roll inflation models.

Inflation from radion gauge-Higgs potential at Planck scale

We study whether the inflation is realized based on the radion gauge-Higgs potential obtained from the one-loop calculation in the 5-dimensional gravity coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge theory. We show that the gauge-Higgs can give rise to inflation in accord with the astrophysical data and the radion plays a role in fixing the values of physical parameters. We clarify the reason why the radion dominated inflation and the hybrid inflation cannot occur in our framework.

Large Field Inflation Models from Higher-Dimensional Gauge Theories

Motivated by the recent detection of B-mode polarization of CMB by BICEP2 which is possibly of primordial origin, we study large field inflation models which can be obtained from higher-dimensional gauge theories. The constraints from CMB observations on the gauge theory parameters are given, and their naturalness are discussed. Among the models analyzed, Dante's Inferno model turns out to be the most preferred model in this framework.

Is cosmological constant screened in Liouville gravity with matter?

There has been a proposal that infrared quantum effects of massless interacting field theories in de-Sitter space may provide time-dependent screening of the cosmological constant. As a concrete model of the proposal, we study the three loop corrections to the energy-momentum tensor of massless $λϕ^4$ theory in the background of classical Liouville gravity in $D=2$ dimensional de-Sitter space. We find that the cosmological constant is screened in sharp contrast to the massless $λϕ^4$ theory in $D=4$ dimensions due to the sign difference between the cosmological constant of the Liouville gravity and that of the Einstein gravity. To argue for the robustness of our prediction, we introduce the concept of time-dependent infrared counter-terms and examine if they recover the de-Sitter invariance in the $λϕ^4$ theory in comparison with the Sine-Gordon model where it was possible.

Radion stabilization in the presence of Wilson line phase

We study the stabilization of an extra-dimensional radius in the presence of a Wilson line phase of an extra $U(1)$ gauge symmetry on a five-dimensional space-time, using the effective potential relating both the radion and the Wilson line phase at the one-loop level. We find that the radion can be stabilized by the introduction of a small number of fermions.

Radion Inflation in Higher-Dimensional Gravity Theory

We study a radion model for inflation and density perturbation identifying the scalar field arising from the five-dimensional gravity on $M_4 x S^1$ with the inflaton. The inflaton potential arising from 5D graviton and matter one-loop effects is shown to possess the desirable slow-roll property. This radion model contains only a small number of parameters and there is an ample parameter region which reproduces (without fine-tuning) all precision astrophysical data.

Inflaton versus Curvaton in Higher Dimensional Gauge Theories

We construct a model of cosmological inflation and perturbation based on the higher-dimensional gauge theory. The inflaton and curvaton are the scalar fields arising from the extra space components of the gauge field living in more than four dimensions. We take the six-dimensional (6D) Yang-Mills theory compactified on $T^2$ as a toy model, and apply the one-loop effective potential of the inflaton and the curvaton to the curvaton scenario. We have found that the curvaton is subdominant for the linear curvature perturbation, but that a significant non-Gaussianity and a sizable tensor to scalar ratio are generated.

Higgs-Inflaton Potential in Higher-Dimensional SUSY Gauge Theories

We study the possibility that the Higgs and the inflaton are the same single field or cousins arising from the extra space components of some higher-dimensional gauge field. We take 5D supersymmetric gauge theory with a matter compactified on S^1 as a toy model and evaluate the one-loop contribution to the Higgs-inflaton potential. Our gauge-Higgs-inflaton unification picture applied to the gauge field of intermediate energy scale (\sim 10^{13} GeV) can explain the observed inflation parameters without fine-tuning.
