Improvement of Automatic GPU Offloading Technology for Application Loop Statements

In recent years, with the slowing down of Moore's law, utilization of hardware other than CPU such as GPU or FPGA is increasing. However, when using heterogeneous hardware other than CPUs, barriers of technical skills such as CUDA and HDL are high. Based on that, I have proposed environment adaptive software that enables automatic conversion, configuration, and high-performance operation of once written code, according to the hardware to be placed. Partly of the offloading to the GPU and FPGA was automated previously. In this paper, I improve and propose a previous automatic GPU offloading method to expand applicapable software and enhance performances more. I evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method in multiple applications.

Evaluation of Automatic FPGA Offloading for Loop Statements of Applications

In recent years, with the prediction of Moore's law slowing down, utilization of hardware other than CPU such as FPGA which is energy effective is increasing. However, when using heterogeneous hardware other than CPUs, barriers of technical skills such as OpenCL are high. Based on that, I have proposed environment adaptive software that enables automatic conversion, configuration, and high-performance operation of once written code, according to the hardware to be placed. Partly of the offloading to the GPU was automated previously. In this paper, I propose and evaluate an automatic extraction method of appropriate offload target loop statements of source code as the first step of offloading to FPGA. I evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method using an existing application.

Study to achieve environment adaptive software

Recently, heterogeneous hardware such as GPU and FPGA is used in many systems and also IoT devices are increased repidly. However, to utilize heterogeneous hardware, the hurdles are high because of much technical skills. In order to break down such a situation, we think it is required in the future that application programmers only need to write logics to be processed, then software will adapt to the environments with heterogeneous hardware, to make it easy to utilize heterogeneous hardware and IoT devices. Therefore, in this paper, we propose environment adaptive software to operate an once written application with high performance by automatically converting the code and configuring setting so that we can utilize GPU, FPGA and IoT devices in the location to be deployed. We explain a proceesing flow and elemental technologies to achieve environment adaptive software.

Parallel processing area extraction and data transfer number reduction for automatic GPU offloading of IoT applications

For Open IoT, we have proposed Tacit Computing technology to discover the devices that have data users need on demand and use them dynamically and an automatic GPU offloading technology as an elementary technology of Tacit Computing. However, it can improve limited applications because it only optimizes parallelizable loop statements extraction. Thus, in this paper, to improve performances of more applications automatically, we propose an improved method with reduction of data transfer between CPU and GPU. We evaluate our proposed offloading method by applying it to Darknet and find that it can process it 3 times as quickly as only using CPU.

Study of Automatic GPU Offloading Technology for Open IoT

IoT technologies have been progressed. Now Open IoT concept has attracted attentions which achieve various IoT services by integrating horizontal separated devices and services. For Open IoT era, we have proposed the Tacit Computing technology to discover the devices with necessary data for users on demand and use them dynamically. However, existing Tacit Computing does not care about performance and operation cost. Therefore in this paper, we propose an automatic GPU offloading technology as an elementary technology of Tacit Computing which uses Genetic Algorithm to extract appropriate offload loop statements to improve performances. We evaluate a C/C++ matrix manipulation to verify effectiveness of GPU offloading and confirm more than 35 times performances within 1 hour tuning time.

A study of coordination logic description and execution for dynamic device coordination services

Recently, IoT technologies have been progressed, and many devices are connected to networks. Previously, IoT services were developed by vertical integration style. But now Open IoT concept has attracted attentions which achieves various IoT services by integrating horizontal separated devices and services. For Open IoT era, we have proposed the Tacit Computing technology to discover the devices with necessary data for users on demand and use them dynamically. Although Tacit Computing can discover and use the device based on the situation, a study of coordination logic description is insufficient when multiple devices are coordinated. In this paper, we study coordination logic description and execution to coordinate multiple devices dynamically. We compare methods with ideas to convert abstract description to specific interface access means at execution time, study merits and demerits and propose an appropriate method.

A Study of Optimizing Heterogeneous Resources for Open IoT

Recently, IoT technologies have been progressed, and many sensors and actuators are connected to networks. We also implemented elemental technologies of Tacit Computing. In this paper, we propose three layers optimizations to reduce operation cost and improve performance of Tacit computing service, in order to make as a continuous service of discovered devices by Tacit Computing. In optimization process, appropriate function allocations are calculated for device, network and cloud layer before full-scale operation.

Study of Vital Data Analysis Platform Using Wearable Sensor

In this paper, we propose a vital data analysis platform which resolves existing problems to utilize vital data for real-time actions. Recently, IoT technologies have been progressed but in the healthcare area, real-time actions based on analyzed vital data are not considered sufficiently yet. The causes are proper use of analyzing methods of stream / micro batch processing and network cost. To resolve existing problems, we propose our vital data analysis platform. Our platform collects vital data of Electrocardiograph and acceleration using an example of wearable vital sensor and analyzes them to extract posture, fatigue and relaxation in smart phones or cloud. Our platform can show analyzed dangerous posture or fatigue level change. We implemented the platform and we are now preparing a field test.

A study of posture judgement on vehicles using wearable acceleration sensor

We study methods to estimate drivers' posture in vehicles using acceleration data of wearable sensor and conduct field tests. To prevent fatal accidents, demands for safety management of bus and taxi are high. However, acceleration of vehicles is added to wearable sensor in vehicles. Therefore, we study methods to estimate driving posture using acceleration data acquired from shirt type wearable sensor hitoe and conduct field tests.

Realtime Predictive Maintenance with Lambda Architecture

Recently, IoT technologies have been progressed and applications of maintenance area are expected. However, IoT maintenance applications are not spread in Japan yet because of insufficient analysis of real time situation, high cost to collect sensing data and to configure failure detection rules. In this paper, using lambda architecture concept, we propose a maintenance platform in which edge nodes analyze sensing data, detect anomaly, extract a new detection rule in real time and a cloud orders maintenance automatically, also analyzes whole data collected by batch process in detail, updates learning model of edge nodes to improve analysis accuracy.

Study of shoplifting prevention using image analysis and ERP check

In this paper, we propose a SaaS service which prevents shoplifting using image analysis and ERP. In Japan, total damage of shoplifting reaches 450 billion yen and more than 1000 small shops gave up their businesses because of shoplifting. Based on recent cloud technology and data analysis technology, we propose a shoplifting prevention service with image analysis of security camera and ERP data check for small shops. We evaluated stream analysis of security camera movie using online machine learining framework Jubatus.
