Exotic phase diagram of a cluster charging model of bosons on the kagome lattice

We study a model of hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice with short-range hopping ($t$) and repulsive interactions ($V$). This model directly maps on to an easy-axis $S=1/2$ XXZ model on the kagome lattice and is also related, at large $V/t$, to a quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice. Using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) numerics, we map out the phase diagram of this model at half-filling. At T=0, we show that this model exhibits a superfluid phase at small $V/t$ and an insulating phase at large $V/t$, separated by a continuous quantum phase transition at $V_c/t \approx 19.8$. The insulating phase at T=0 appears to have no conventional broken symmetries, and is thus a uniform Mott insulator (a `spin liquid' in magnetic language). We characterize this insulating phase as a uniform $Z_2$ fractionalized insulator from the topological order in the ground state and estimate its vison gap. Consistent with this identification, there is no apparent thermal phase transition upon heating the insulator. The insulating phase instead smoothly crosses over into the high temperature paramagnet via an intermediate cooperative paramagnetic regime. We also study the superfluid-to-normal thermal transition for $V < V_c$. We find that this is a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at small $V/t$ but changes to a first order transition for $V$ closer to $V_c$. We argue that this first order thermal transition is consistent with the presence of a nearby $Z_2$ insulating ground state obtained from the superfluid ground state by condensing double vortices.

Nematic domains and resistivity in an itinerant metamagnet coupled to a lattice

The nature of the emergent phase near a putative quantum critical point in the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ has been a recent subject of intensive research. It has been suggested that this phase may possess electronic nematic order(ENO). In this work, we investigate the possibility of nematic domain formation in the emergent phase, using a phenomenological model of electrons with ENO and its coupling to lattice degrees of freedom. The resistivity due to the scattering off the domain walls is shown to closely follow the ENO parameter. Our results provide qualitative explanations for the dependence of the resistivity on external magnetic fields in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$.

Theory of electron-phonon interaction in a nonequilibrium open electronic system

We study the effects of time-independent nonequilibrium drive on an open 2D electron gas system coupled to 2D longitudinal acoustic phonons using the Keldysh path integral method. The layer electron-phonon system is defined at the two-dimensional interface between a pair of three-dimensional Fermi liquid leads, which act both as a particle pump and an infinite bath. The nonequilibrium steady state is achieved in the layer by assuming the leads to be thermally equilibrated at two different chemical potentials. This subjects the layer to an out-of-plane voltage $V$ and drives a steady-state charge current perpendicular to the system. We compute the effects of small voltages ($V\ll\w_D$) on the in-plane electron-phonon scattering rate and the electron effective mass at zero temperature. We also find that the obtained onequilibrium modification to the acoustic phonon velocity and the Thomas-Fermi screening length reveal the possibility of tuning these quantities with the external voltage.

Nonequilibrium quantum criticality in open electronic systems

A theory is presented of quantum criticality in open (coupled to reservoirs) itinerant electron magnets, with nonequilibrium drive provided by current flow across the system. Both departures from equilibrium at conventional (equilibrium) quantum critical points and the physics of phase transitions induced by the nonequilibrium drive are treated. Nonequilibrium-induced phase transitions are found to have the same leading critical behavior as conventional thermal phase transitions.

Biaxial spin-nematic phase of two dimensional disordered rotor models and spin-one bosons in optical lattices

We show that the ground state of disordered rotor models with quadrupolar interactions can exhibit biaxial nematic ordering in the disorder-averaged sense. We present a mean-field analysis of the model and demonstrate that the biaxial phase is stable against small quantum fluctuations. We point out the possibility of experimental realization of such rotor models using ultracold spin-one Bose atoms in a spin-dependent and disordered optical lattice in the limit of a large number of atoms per site and also suggest an imaging experiment to detect the biaxial nematicity in such systems.

Mott phases and superfluid-insulator transition of dipolar spin-three bosons in an optical lattice: implications for Cr atoms

We study the Mott phases and superfluid-insulator transition of spin-three bosons in an optical lattice with an anisotropic two dimensional optical trap. We chart out the phase diagrams for Mott states with $n=1$ and $n=2$ atoms per lattice site. It is shown that the long-range dipolar interaction stabilizes a state where the chains of the ferromagnetically aligned spins run along the longer trap direction while the spin ordering is staggered between nearby chains, leading to an antiferromagnetic ordering along the shorter trap direction. We also obtain the mean-field phase boundary for the superfluid-insulator transition in these systems and study the nature of spin ordering in the superfluid state near the transition. We show that, inside the superfluid phase and near the superfluid-insulator phase boundary, the system undergoes a first order antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin ordering transition. We discuss implications of our results for $^{52}$Cr atoms and suggest possible experiments to detect different phases in such systems.

Spin liquid phase in a $S=1/2$ quantum magnet on the kagome lattice

We study a model of hard-core bosons with short-range repulsive interactions at half-filling on the kagome lattice. Using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) numerics, we find that this model shows a continuous superfluid to insulator quantum phase transition, with exponents $z=1$ and $ν\approx 0.67(5)$. The insulator, $\cI^*$, exhibits short-ranged density and bond correlations, topological order and exponentially decaying spatial vison correlations, all of which point to a $Z_2$ fractionalized phase. We estimate the vison gap in $\cI^*$ from the temperature dependence of the energy. Our results, together with the equivalence between hard-core bosons and $S=1/2$ spins, provide compelling evidence for a spin-liquid phase in an easy-axis spin-1/2 model with no special conservation laws.

Topological degeneracy of non-Abelian states for dummies

We present a physical construction of degenerate groundstates of the Moore-Read Pfaffian states, which exhibits non-Abelian statistics, on general Riemann surface with genus g. The construction is given by a generalization of the recent argument [M.O. and T. Senthil, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 060601 (2006)] which relates fraction- alization and topological order. The nontrivial groundstate degeneracy obtained by Read and Green [Phys. Rev. B 61, 10267 (2000)] based on differential geometry is reproduced exactly. Some restrictions on the statistics, due to the fractional charge of the quasiparticle are also discussed. Furthermore, the groundstate degeneracy of the p+ip superconductor in two dimensions, which is closely related to the Pfaffian states, is discussed with a similar construction.

Valence Bond Solids and Their Quantum Melting in Hard-Core Bosons on the Kagome Lattice

Using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations and dual vortex theory we analyze the ground state phase diagram of hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice with nearest neighbor repulsion. In contrast to the case of a triangular lattice, no supersolid emerges for strong interactions. While a uniform superfluid prevails at half-filling, two novel solid phases emerge at densities $ρ=1/3$ and $ρ=2/3$. These solids exhibit an only partial ordering of the bosonic density, allowing for local resonances on a subset of hexagons of the kagome lattice. We provide evidence for a weakly first-order phase transition at the quantum melting point between these solid phases and the superfluid.

Superfluid-Insulator transitions of bosons on Kagome lattice at non-integer fillings

We study the superfluid-insulator transitions of bosons on the Kagome lattice at incommensurate filling factors f=1/2 and 2/3 using a duality analysis. We find that at f=1/2 the bosons will always be in a superfluid phase and demonstrate that the T_3 symmetry of the dual (dice) lattice, which results in dynamic localization of vortices due to the Aharanov-Bohm caging effect, is at the heart of this phenomenon. In contrast, for f=2/3, we find that the bosons exhibit a quantum phase transition between superfluid and translational symmetry broken Mott insulating phases. We discuss the possible broken symmetries of the Mott phase and elaborate the theory of such a transition. Finally we map the boson system to a XXZ spin model in a magnetic field and discuss the properties of this spin model using the obtained results.

One-dimensional itinerant ferromagnets with Heisenberg symmetry and the ferromagnetic quantum critical point

We study one-dimensional itinerant ferromagnets with Heisenberg symmetry near a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. It is shown that the Berry phase term arises in the effective action of itinerant ferromagnets when the full SU(2) symmetry is present. We explicitly demonstrate that dynamical critical exponent of the theory with the Berry term is $z=2 +{\rm O}(ε^2)$ in the sense of $ε$ expansion, as previously discovered in the Ising limit. It appears, however, that the universality class at the interacting fixed point is not the same. We point out that even though the critical theory in the Ising limit can be obtained by the standard Hertz-Millis approach, the Heisenberg limit is expected to be different. We also calculate the exact electron Green functions $G(x,t=0)$ and $G(x=0,t)$ near the transition in a range of temperature, which can be used for experimental signatures of the associated critical points.

Ordering in Cs2CuCl4: Is there a proximate spin liquid?

The layered spiral magnet Cs2CuCl4 displays several interesting properties that have been suggested as evidence of proximity to a two dimensional quantum spin liquid. In this paper we study a concrete version of this proposal and suggest experiments that can potentially confirm it. We study universal critical properties of two-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets near the quantum phase transition between a spiral magnetic state and a spin liquid state with gapped bosonic spinons in the framework of the O(4) invariant critical theory proposed earlier(Chubukov et al, cond-mat/9402006). Direct numerical calculation of the anomalous exponent in spin correlations shows that the critical scattering has broad continua qualitatively similar to experiment. More remarkably we show that the enlarged O(4) symmetry leads to the same slow power law decay for the vector spin chirality and the Neel correlations. We show how this may be observed through polarized neutron scattering experiments. A number of other less dramatic consequences of the critical theory are outlined as well.

Molecular transistor coupled to phonons and Luttinger-liquid leads

We study the effects of electron-phonon interactions on the transport properties of a molecular quantum dot coupled to two Luttinger-liquid leads. In particular, we investigate the effects on the steady state current and DC noise characteristics. We consider both equilibrated and unequilibrated on-dot phonons. The density matrix formalism is applied in the high temperature approximation and the resulting semi-classical rate equation is numerically solved for various strengths of electron-electron interactions in the leads and electron-phonon coupling. The current and the noise are in general smeared out and suppressed due to intralead electron interaction. On the other hand, the Fano factor, which measures the noise normalized by the current, is more enhanced as the intralead interaction becomes stronger. As the electron-phonon coupling becomes greater than order one, the Fano factor exhibits super-Poissonian behaviour.

U(1) spin liquids and valence bond solids in a large-N three-dimensional Heisenberg model

We study possible quantum ground states of the Sp(N) generalized Heisenberg model on a cubic lattice with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. The phase diagram is obtained in the large-N limit and fluctuation effects are considered via appropriate gauge theories. In particular, we find three U(1) spin liquid phases with different short-range magnetic correlations. These phases are characterized by deconfined gapped spinons, gapped monopoles, and gapless ``photons''. As N becomes smaller, a confinement transition from these phases to valence bond solids (VBS) may occur. This transition is studied by using duality and analyzing the resulting theory of monopoles coupled to a non-compact dual gauge field; the condensation of the monopoles leads to VBS phases. We determine the resulting VBS phases emerging from two of the three spin liquid states. On the other hand, the spin liquid state near J_1 \approx J_2 appears to be more stable against monopole condensation and could be a promising candidate for a spin liquid state in real systems.

Itinerant metamagnetism induced by electronic nematic order

It is shown that metamagnetic transition in metals can occur via the formation of electronic nematic order. We consider a simple model where the spin-dependent Fermi surface instability gives rise to the formation of an electronic nematic phase upon increasing the applied Zeeman magnetic field. This leads to two consecutive metamagnetic transitions that separate the nematic phase from the low-field and high-field 'isotropic' metallic phases. Possible connection to the physics of the bilayer Ruthenate, Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, is also discussed.

Evolution of the single-hole spectral function across a quantum phase transition in the anisotropic-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet

We study the evolution of the single-hole spectral function when the ground state of the anisotropic-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet changes from the incommensurate magnetically-ordered phase to the spin-liquid state. In order to describe both of the ground states on equal footing, we use the large-N approach where the transition between these two phases can be obtained by controlling the quantum fluctuations via an 'effective' spin magnitude. Adding a hole into these ground states is described by a t-J type model in the slave-fermion representation. Implications of our results to possible future ARPES experiments on insulating frustrated magnets, especially Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$, are discussed.

The planar pyrochlore antiferromagnet: A large-N analysis

We study possible quantum phases of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the planar pyrochlore lattice, also known as the checkerboard lattice or the square lattice with crossings. It is assumed that the exchange coupling on the square-lattice-links is not necessarily the same as those along the crossing links. When all the couplings are the same, this model may be regarded as a two dimensional analog of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The large-N limit of the Sp($N$) generalized model is considered and the phase diagram is obtained by analyzing the fluctuation effects about the $N \to \infty$ limit. We find a topologically-ordered $Z_2$-spin-liquid phase in a narrow region of the phase diagram as well as the plaquette-ordered and staggered spin-Peierls phases as possible quantum-disordered paramagnetic phases.

Competing Orders and Superconductivity in the Doped Mott Insulator on the Shastry-Sutherland Lattice

Quantum antiferromagnets on geometrically frustrated lattices often allow a number of unusual paramagnetic ground states. The fate of these Mott insulators upon doping is an important issue that may shed some light on the high $T_c$ cuprate problem. We consider the doped Mott insulator on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice via the t-J model. The U(1) slave-boson mean field theory reveals the strong competition between different broken symmetry states. It is found that, in some ranges of doping, there exist superconducting phases with or without coexisting translational-symmetry- breaking orders such as the staggered flux or dimerization. Our results will be directly relevant to SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ when this material is doped in future.
