Modulation analysis of the stochastic Camassa-Holm equation with pure jump noise

We study the stochastic Camassa-Holm equation with pure jump noise. We prove that if the initial condition of the solution is a solitary wave solution of the unperturbed equation, the solution decomposes into the sum of a randomly modulated solitary wave and a small remainder. Moreover, we derive the equations for the modulation parameters and show that the remainder converges to the solution of a stochastic linear equation as amplitude of the jump noise tends to zero.

Insight-HXMT and GECAM-C observations of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A

GRB 221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected since the discovery of this kind of energetic explosions. However, an accurate measurement of the prompt emission properties of this burst is very challenging due to its exceptional brightness. With joint observations of \textit{Insight}-HXMT and GECAM-C, we made an unprecedentedly accurate measurement of the emission during the first $\sim$1800 s of GRB 221009A, including its precursor, main emission (ME, which dominates the burst in flux), flaring emission and early afterglow, in the hard X-ray to soft gamma-ray band from $\sim$ 10 keV to $\sim$ 6 MeV. Based on the GECAM-C unsaturated data of the ME, we measure a record-breaking isotropic equivalent energy ($E_{\rm iso}$) of $\bf \sim 1.5 \times 10^{55}$ erg, which is about eight times the total rest-mass energy of the Sun. The early afterglow data require a significant jet break between 650 s and 1100 s, most likely at $\sim950$ s from the afterglow starting time $T_{AG}$, which corresponds to a jet opening angle of $\sim {0.7^\circ} \ (η_γn)^{1/8}$, where $n$ is the ambient medium density in units of $\rm cm^{-3}$ and $η_γ$ is the ratio between $γ$-ray energy and afterglow kinetic energy. The beaming-corrected total $γ$-ray energy $E_γ$ is $\sim 1.15 \times10^{51} \ (η_γn)^{1/4}$ erg, which is typical for long GRBs. These results suggest that this GRB may have a special central engine, which could launch and collimate a very narrowly beamed jet with an ordinary energy budget, leading to exceptionally luminous gamma-ray radiation per unit solid angle. Alternatively, more GRBs might have such a narrow and bright beam, which are missed by an unfavorable viewing angle or have been detected without distance measurement.

FedScore: A privacy-preserving framework for federated scoring system development

We propose FedScore, a privacy-preserving federated learning framework for scoring system generation across multiple sites to facilitate cross-institutional collaborations. The FedScore framework includes five modules: federated variable ranking, federated variable transformation, federated score derivation, federated model selection and federated model evaluation. To illustrate usage and assess FedScore's performance, we built a hypothetical global scoring system for mortality prediction within 30 days after a visit to an emergency department using 10 simulated sites divided from a tertiary hospital in Singapore. We employed a pre-existing score generator to construct 10 local scoring systems independently at each site and we also developed a scoring system using centralized data for comparison. We compared the acquired FedScore model's performance with that of other scoring models using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The FedScore model achieved an average area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.763 across all sites, with a standard deviation (SD) of 0.020. We also calculated the average AUC values and SDs for each local model, and the FedScore model showed promising accuracy and stability with a high average AUC value which was closest to the one of the pooled model and SD which was lower than that of most local models. This study demonstrates that FedScore is a privacy-preserving scoring system generator with potentially good generalizability.

Five-year in-orbit background of Insight-HXMT

Purpose: We present the five-year in-orbit background evolution of Insight-HXMT since the launch, as well as the effects of the background model in data analysis. Methods: The backgrounds of the three main payloads, i.e., Low-Energy Telescope, Medium-Energy Telescope and High-Energy Telescope, are described, respectively. The evolution of the background over time is obtained by simply comparing the background in every year during the in-orbit operation of Insight-HXMT. Results: The major observational characteristics of the Insight-HXMT in-orbit background are presented, including the light curve, spectrum, geographical distribution, and long-term evolution. The systematic error in background estimation is investigated for every year. Conclusion: The observational characteristics of the five-year in-orbit background are consistent with our knowledge of the satellite design and the space environment, and the background model is still valid for the latest observations of Insight-HXMT.

ARcode: HPC Application Recognition Through Image-encoded Monitoring Data

Knowing HPC applications of jobs and analyzing their performance behavior play important roles in system management and optimizations. The existing approaches detect and identify HPC applications through machine learning models. However, these approaches rely heavily on the manually extracted features from resource utilization data to achieve high prediction accuracy. In this study, we propose an innovative application recognition method, ARcode, which encodes job monitoring data into images and leverages the automatic feature learning capability of convolutional neural networks to detect and identify applications. Our extensive evaluations based on the dataset collected from a large-scale production HPC system show that ARcode outperforms the state-of-the-art methodology by up to 18.87% in terms of accuracy at high confidence thresholds. For some specific applications (BerkeleyGW and e3sm), ARcode outperforms by over 20% at a confidence threshold of 0.8.

Workload Failure Prediction for Data Centers

Failed workloads that consumed significant computational resources in time and space affect the efficiency of data centers significantly and thus limit the amount of scientific work that can be achieved. While the computational power has increased significantly over the years, detection and prediction of workload failures have lagged far behind and will become increasingly critical as the system scale and complexity further increase. In this study, we analyze workload traces collected from a production cluster and train machine learning models on a large amount of data sets to predict workload failures. Our prediction models consist of a queue-time model that estimates the probability of workload failures before execution and a runtime model that predicts failures at runtime. Evaluation results show that the queue-time model and runtime model can predict workload failures with a maximum precision score of 90.61% and 97.75%, respectively. By integrating the runtime model with the job scheduler, it helps reduce CPU time, and memory usage by up to 16.7% and 14.53%, respectively.

Beyond Graph Convolutional Network: An Interpretable Regularizer-centered Optimization Framework

Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have been attracting widespread attentions due to their encouraging performance and powerful generalizations. However, few work provide a general view to interpret various GCNs and guide GCNs' designs. In this paper, by revisiting the original GCN, we induce an interpretable regularizer-centerd optimization framework, in which by building appropriate regularizers we can interpret most GCNs, such as APPNP, JKNet, DAGNN, and GNN-LF/HF. Further, under the proposed framework, we devise a dual-regularizer graph convolutional network (dubbed tsGCN) to capture topological and semantic structures from graph data. Since the derived learning rule for tsGCN contains an inverse of a large matrix and thus is time-consuming, we leverage the Woodbury matrix identity and low-rank approximation tricks to successfully decrease the high computational complexity of computing infinite-order graph convolutions. Extensive experiments on eight public datasets demonstrate that tsGCN achieves superior performance against quite a few state-of-the-art competitors w.r.t. classification tasks.

Unconventional ferroelectricity in half-filling states of antiparallel stacking of twisted WSe2

Abstract: We report on emergence of an abnormal electronic polarization in twisted double bilayer WSe2 in antiparallel interface stacking geometry, where local centrosymmetry of atomic registries at the twist interface does not favor the spontaneous electronic polarizations as recently observed in the parallel interface stacking geometry. The unconventional ferroelectric behaviors probed by electronic transport measurement occur at half filling insulating states at 1.5 K and gradually disappear at about 40 K. Single band Hubbard model based on the triangular moiré lattice and the interlayer charge transfer controlled by insulating phase transition are proposed to interpret the formation of electronic polarization states near half filling in twisted WSe2 devices. Our work highlights the prominent role of many-body electronic interaction in fostering novel quantum states in moiré-structured systems.

A Survey on Knowledge-Enhanced Pre-trained Language Models

Natural Language Processing (NLP) has been revolutionized by the use of Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) such as BERT. Despite setting new records in nearly every NLP task, PLMs still face a number of challenges including poor interpretability, weak reasoning capability, and the need for a lot of expensive annotated data when applied to downstream tasks. By integrating external knowledge into PLMs, \textit{\underline{K}nowledge-\underline{E}nhanced \underline{P}re-trained \underline{L}anguage \underline{M}odels} (KEPLMs) have the potential to overcome the above-mentioned limitations. In this paper, we examine KEPLMs systematically through a series of studies. Specifically, we outline the common types and different formats of knowledge to be integrated into KEPLMs, detail the existing methods for building and evaluating KEPLMS, present the applications of KEPLMs in downstream tasks, and discuss the future research directions. Researchers will benefit from this survey by gaining a quick and comprehensive overview of the latest developments in this field.

TegFormer: Topic-to-Essay Generation with Good Topic Coverage and High Text Coherence

Creating an essay based on a few given topics is a challenging NLP task. Although several effective methods for this problem, topic-to-essay generation, have appeared recently, there is still much room for improvement, especially in terms of the coverage of the given topics and the coherence of the generated text. In this paper, we propose a novel approach called TegFormer which utilizes the Transformer architecture where the encoder is enriched with domain-specific contexts while the decoder is enhanced by a large-scale pre-trained language model. Specifically, a \emph{Topic-Extension} layer capturing the interaction between the given topics and their domain-specific contexts is plugged into the encoder. Since the given topics are usually concise and sparse, such an additional layer can bring more topic-related semantics in to facilitate the subsequent natural language generation. Moreover, an \emph{Embedding-Fusion} module that combines the domain-specific word embeddings learnt from the given corpus and the general-purpose word embeddings provided by a GPT-2 model pre-trained on massive text data is integrated into the decoder. Since GPT-2 is at a much larger scale, it contains a lot more implicit linguistic knowledge which would help the decoder to produce more grammatical and readable text. Extensive experiments have shown that the pieces of text generated by TegFormer have better topic coverage and higher text coherence than those from SOTA topic-to-essay techniques, according to automatic and human evaluations. As revealed by ablation studies, both the Topic-Extension layer and the Embedding-Fusion module contribute substantially to TegFormer's performance advantage.

Data-driven forward-inverse problems for the variable coefficients Hirota equation using deep learning method

Data-driven forward-inverse problems for the variable coefficients Hirota (VCH) equation are discussed in this paper. The main idea is to use the improved physics-informed neural networks (IPINN) algorithm with neuron-wise locally adaptive activation function, slope recovery term and parameter regularization to recover the data-driven solitons and high-order soliton of the VCH equation with initial-boundary conditions, as well as the data-driven parameters discovery for VCH equation with unknown parameters under noise of different intensity. Numerical results are shown to demonstrate two facts: (i) data-driven soliton solutions of the VCH equation are successfully learned by adjusting the network layers, neurons, the original training data, spatiotemporal regions and other parameters of the IPINN algorithm; (ii) the prediction parameter can be trained stably and accurately by introducing a parameter regularization strategy with an appropriate weight coefficients into the IPINN algorithm. The results achieved in this work verify the effectiveness of the IPINN algorithm in solving the forward-inverse problems of the variable coefficients equation.

Data driven solutions and parameter discovery of the nonlocal mKdV equation via deep learning method

In this paper, we systematically study the integrability and data-driven solutions of the nonlocal mKdV equation. The infinite conservation laws of the nonlocal mKdV equation and the corresponding infinite conservation quantities are given through Riccti equation. The data driven solutions of the zero boundary for the nonlocal mKdV equation are studied by using the multi-layer physical information neural network algorithm, which including kink soliton, complex soliton, bright-bright soliton and the interaction between soliton and kink-type. For the data-driven solutions with non-zero boundary, we study kink, dark, anti-dark and rational solution. By means of image simulation, the relevant dynamic behavior and error analysis of these solutions are given. In addition, we discuss the inverse problem of the integrable nonlocal mKdV equation by applying the physics-informed neural network algorithm to discover the parameters of the nonlinear terms of the equation.

The long-time asymptotic of the derivative nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation with step-like initial value

Consideration in this present paper is the long-time asymptotic of solutions to the derivative nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation with the step-like initial value \begin{eqnarray} q(x,0)=q_{0}(x)=\begin{cases} \begin{split} A_{1}e^{iϕ}e^{2iBx}, \quad\quad x<0,\\ A_{2}e^{-2iBx}, \quad\quad~~ x>0. \end{split}\nonumber \end{cases} \end{eqnarray} by Deift-Zhou method. The step-like initial problem described by a matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. A crucial ingredient used in this paper is to introduce $g$-function mechanism for solving the problem of the entries of the jump matrix growing exponentially as $t\rightarrow\infty$. It is shown that the leading order term of the asymptotic solution of the DNLS equation expressed by the Theta function $Θ$ about the Riemann-surface of genus 3 and the subleading order term expressed by parabolic cylinder and Airy functions.

Mining On Alzheimer's Diseases Related Knowledge Graph to Identity Potential AD-related Semantic Triples for Drug Repurposing

To date, there are no effective treatments for most neurodegenerative diseases. Knowledge graphs can provide comprehensive and semantic representation for heterogeneous data, and have been successfully leveraged in many biomedical applications including drug repurposing. Our objective is to construct a knowledge graph from literature to study relations between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and chemicals, drugs and dietary supplements in order to identify opportunities to prevent or delay neurodegenerative progression. We collected biomedical annotations and extracted their relations using SemRep via SemMedDB. We used both a BERT-based classifier and rule-based methods during data preprocessing to exclude noise while preserving most AD-related semantic triples. The 1,672,110 filtered triples were used to train with knowledge graph completion algorithms (i.e., TransE, DistMult, and ComplEx) to predict candidates that might be helpful for AD treatment or prevention. Among three knowledge graph completion models, TransE outperformed the other two (MR = 13.45, Hits@1 = 0.306). We leveraged the time-slicing technique to further evaluate the prediction results. We found supporting evidence for most highly ranked candidates predicted by our model which indicates that our approach can inform reliable new knowledge. This paper shows that our graph mining model can predict reliable new relationships between AD and other entities (i.e., dietary supplements, chemicals, and drugs). The knowledge graph constructed can facilitate data-driven knowledge discoveries and the generation of novel hypotheses.

Physics-informed neural network methods based on Miura transformations and discovery of new localized wave solutions

We put forth two physics-informed neural network (PINN) schemes based on Miura transformations and the novelty of this research is the incorporation of Miura transformation constraints into neural networks to solve nonlinear PDEs. The most noteworthy advantage of our method is that we can simply exploit the initial-boundary data of a solution of a certain nonlinear equation to obtain the data-driven solution of another evolution equation with the aid of PINNs and during the process, the Miura transformation plays an indispensable role of a bridge between solutions of two separate equations. It is tailored to the inverse process of the Miura transformation and can overcome the difficulties in solving solutions based on the implicit expression. Moreover, two schemes are applied to perform abundant computational experiments to effectively reproduce dynamic behaviors of solutions for the well-known KdV equation and mKdV equation. Significantly, new data-driven solutions are successfully simulated and one of the most important results is the discovery of a new localized wave solution: kink-bell type solution of the defocusing mKdV equation and it has not been previously observed and reported to our knowledge. It provides a possibility for new types of numerical solutions by fully leveraging the many-to-one relationship between solutions before and after Miura transformations. Performance comparisons in different cases as well as advantages and disadvantages analysis of two schemes are also discussed. On the basis of the performance of two schemes and no free lunch theorem, they both have their own merits and thus more appropriate one should be chosen according to specific cases.

Neutral Atmospheric Density Measurement Using Insight-HXMT Data by Earth Occultation Technique

The Earth occultation technique has broad applications in both astronomy and atmospheric density measurements. We construct the background model during the occultation of the Crab Nebula observed by the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) at energies between 6 keV and 100 keV. We propose a Bayesian atmospheric density retrieval method based on the Earth occultation technique, combining Poisson and Gaussian statistics. By modeling the atmospheric attenuation of X-ray photons during the occultation, we simultaneously retrieved the neutral densities of the atmosphere at different altitude ranges. Our method considers the correlation of densities between neighboring atmospheric layers and reduces the potential systematic bias to which previous work may be subject. Previous analyses based on light curve fitting or spectral fitting also lost some spectral or temporal information of the data. In contrast to previous work, the occultation data observed by the three telescopes onboard Insight-HXMT is fully used in our analysis, further reducing the statistical error in density retrieval. We apply our method to cross-check the (semi-)empirical atmospheric models, using 115 sets of occultation data of the Crab Nebula observed by Insight-HXMT. We find that the retrieved neutral density is ~10%, ~20%, and ~25% less than the values of the widely used atmospheric model NRLMSISE-00, in the altitude range of 55--80 km, 80--90 km, and 90--100 km, respectively. We also show that the newly released atmospheric model NRLMSIS 2.0 is generally consistent with our density measurements.

The 100-m X-ray Test Facility at IHEP

The 100-m X-ray Test Facility of the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) was initially proposed in 2012 for the test and calibration of the X-ray detectors of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) with the capability to support future X-ray missions. The large instrument chamber connected with a long vacuum tube can accommodate the X-ray mirror, focal plane detector and other instruments. The X-ray sources are installed at the other end of the vacuum tube with a distance of 105 m, which can provide an almost parallel X-ray beam covering 0.2$\sim$60 keV energy band. The X-ray mirror modules of the Einstein Probe (EP) and the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP) and payload of the Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) have been tested and calibrated with this facility. It has been also used to characterize the focal plane camera and aluminum filter used on the Einstein Probe. In this paper, we will introduce the overall configuration and capability of the facility, and give a brief introduction of some calibration results performed with this facility.

Long-time asymptotics for a fourth-order dispersive nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions

In this work, we consider the long-time asymptotics for the Cauchy problem of a fourth-order dispersive nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions at infinity. Firstly, in order to construct the basic Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with nonzero boundary conditions, we analysis direct scattering problem. Then we deform the corresponding matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem to explicitly solving models via using the nonlinear steepest descent method and employing the $g$-function mechanism to eliminate the exponential growths of the jump matrices. Finally, we obtain the asymptotic stage of modulation instability for the fourth-order dispersive nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
