A Software-Defined QoS Provisioning Framework for HPC Applications

With the emergence of large-scale data-intensive high-performance applications, new I/O challenges appear in the efficient management of petabytes of information in High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments. Data management environments must meet the performance needs of such applications, represented by various Quality-of-Service (QoS) metrics such as desired bandwidth, response time guarantee, and resource utilization. Traditional high-performance management platforms are facing considerable challenges regarding flexibility, as well as the need to address a variety of QoS metrics and constraints. To tackle these challenges, a Software-Defined approach is considered promising, and various prototypes have already been deployed in Cloud-based data centers. In this paper, we investigate the idea of utilizing a software-defined approach to provide I/O QoS provisioning for HPC applications. We identify the key challenges towards the high degree of concurrency and variation in HPC platforms, and propose a series of novel designs into the general software-defined approach in order to deliver our goal. Specifically, we introduced a borrowing-based strategy and a new M-LWDF algorithm based on traditional token-bucket algorithms to assure a fair and efficient utilization of resources for HPC applications. Due to the lack of software-defined frameworks in current HPC platform, we evaluated our framework through simulation. The experimental results show that our strategies make a significant improvement upon the general HPC frameworks and lead to clear performance gain for HPC applications.

Asymmetric viscothermal acoustic propagation and implication on flow measurement

In the application of high frequency acoustic flow measurement, viscothermal dissipation and asymmetric acoustic modes cannot be overlooked. Present paper mathematically formulates asymmetric linear disturbance dynamics in terms of velocity and temperature disturbances based on the conservations of mass, momentum and energy. An iterative calculation procedure, which is similar to Galerkin method, is presented. Numerical analysis of asymmetric acoustic features (phase velocity and attenuation coefficient) are comprehensively given under the effects of viscothermal dissipation and shear flow convection. In the end, flow measurement performance of asymmetric acoustic modes is literally discussed. Numerical study shows that viscothermal dissipation affects the cut-on frequency of acoustic modes and couples nonlinearly with shear convection when the flow Mach number is large. These parameters impose significant influences on measurement performance. Each acoustic mode has inherent measurement derivation which can be theoretically used to compensate the acoustic flow measurement error. Apparent prediction error may occur if the viscothermal dissipation is taken out of consideration

Approximation algorithms for two-machine flow-shop scheduling with a conflict graph

Path cover is a well-known intractable problem that finds a minimum number of vertex disjoint paths in a given graph to cover all the vertices. We show that a variant, where the objective function is not the number of paths but the number of length-$0$ paths (that is, isolated vertices), turns out to be polynomial-time solvable. We further show that another variant, where the objective function is the total number of length-$0$ and length-$1$ paths, is also polynomial-time solvable. Both variants find applications in approximating the two-machine flow-shop scheduling problem in which job processing has constraints that are formulated as a conflict graph. For the unit jobs, we present a $4/3$-approximation algorithm for the scheduling problem with an arbitrary conflict graph, based on the exact algorithm for the variants of the path cover problem. For the arbitrary jobs while the conflict graph is the union of two disjoint cliques, that is, all the jobs can be partitioned into two groups such that the jobs in a group are pairwise conflicting, we present a simple $3/2$-approximation algorithm.

Dynamics of high-order solitons in the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations

A study of high-order solitons in three nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations is presented, which includes the \PT-symmetric, reverse-time, and reverse-space-time nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations. General high-order solitons in three different equations are derived from the same Riemann-Hilbert solutions of the AKNS hierarchy, except for the difference in the corresponding symmetry relations on the "perturbed" scattering data. Dynamics of general high-order solitons in these equations is further analyzed. It is shown that the high-order fundamental-soliton is always moving on several different trajectories in nearly equal velocities, and they can be nonsingular or repeatedly collapsing, depending on the choices of the parameters. It is also shown that high-order multi-solitons could have more complicated wave structures and behave very differently from high-order fundamental solitons. More interesting is the high-order hybrid-pattern solitons, which are derived from combination of different size of block matrix in the Riemann-Hilbert solutions and thus they can describe a nonlinear interaction between several types of solitons.

Impact of near-PT symmetry on exciting solitons and interactions based on a complex Ginzburg-Landau model

We present and theoretically report the influence of a class of near-parity-time-(PT-) symmetric potentials with spectral filtering parameter $α_2$ and nonlinear gain-loss coefficient $β_2$ on solitons in the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. The potentials do not admit entirely-real linear spectra any more due to the existence of coefficients $α_2$ or $β_2$. However, we find that most stable exact solitons can exist in the second quadrant of the $(α_2, β_2)$ space, including on the corresponding axes. More intriguingly, the centrosymmetric two points in the $(α_2, β_2)$ space possess imaginary-axis (longitudinal-axis) symmetric linear-stability spectra. Furthermore, an unstable nonlinear mode can be excited to another stable nonlinear mode by the adiabatic change of $α_2$ and $β_2$. Other fascinating properties associated with the exact solitons are also examined in detail, such as the interactions and energy flux. These results are useful for the related experimental designs and applications.

General rogue waves and their dynamics in several reverse time integrable nonlocal nonlinear equations

A study of general rogue waves in some integrable reverse time nonlocal nonlinear equations is presented. Specifically, the reverse time nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and nonlocal Davey-Stewartson (DS) equations are investigated, which are nonlocal reductions from the AKNS hierarchy. By using Darboux transformation (DT) method, several types of rogue waves are constructed. Especially, a unified binary DT is found for this nonlocal DS system, thus the solution formulas for nonlocal DSI and DSII equation can be written in an uniform expression. Dynamics of these rogue waves is separately explored. It is shown that the (1+1)-dimensional rogue waves in nonlocal NLS equation can be bounded for both x and t, or develop collapsing singularities. It is also shown that the (1+2)-dimensional line rogue waves in the nonlocal DS equations can be bounded for all space and time, or have finite-time blowing-ups. All these types depend on the values of free parameters introduced in the solution. In addition, the dynamics patterns in the multi- and higher-order rogue waves exhibits more richer structures, most of which have no counterparts in the corresponding local nonlinear equations.

Localized excitations and interactional solutions for the reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations

Based on nonlocal symmetry method, localized excitations and interactional solutions are investigated for the reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations. The nonlocal symmetries of the reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations are obtained by the truncated Painleve expansion approach and the Mobious invariant property. The nonlocal symmetries are localized to a prolonged system by introducing suitable auxiliary dependent variables. The extended system can be closed and a novel Lie point symmetry system is constructed. By solving the initial value problems, a new type of finite symmetry transformations is obtained to derive periodic waves, Ma breathers and breathers travelling on the background of periodic line waves. Then rich exact interactional solutions are derived between solitary waves and other waves including cnoidal waves, rational waves, Painleve waves, and periodic waves through similarity reductions. In particular, several new types of localized excitations including rogue waves are found, which stem from the arbitrary function generated in the process of similarity reduction. By computer numerical simulation, the dynamics of these localized excitations and interactional solutions are discussed, which exhibit meaningful structures.

Breather to the Yajima-Oikawa system

The Yajima-Oikawa (YO) system describes the resonant interaction between long and short waves under certain condition. In this paper, through the KP hierarchy reduction, we construct the breather solutions for the YO system in one- and two-dimensional cases. Similar to Akhmediev and Kuznetsov-Ma breather solutions (the wavenumber k_i->ik_i) for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, is shown that the YO system have two kinds ofbreather solutions with the relations p_{2k-1}->ip_{2k-1}, p_{2k}->-ip_{2k}, q_{2k-1}->iq_{2k-1} and q_{2k}->-iq_{2k}, in which the homoclinic orbit and dark soliton solutions are two special cases respectively. Furthermore, taking the long wave limit, we derive the rational and rational and rational-exp solutions which contain lump, line rogue wave, soliton and their mixed cases. By considering the further reduction, such solutions can be reduced to one-dimensional YO system.

Influence of cell-cell interactions on the population growth rate in a tumor

The understanding of the macroscopic phenomenological models of the population growth at a microscopic level is important to predict the population behaviors emerged from the interactions between the individuals. In this work we consider the influence of the cell-cell interaction on the population growth rate $R$ in a tumor system, and show that, in most cases especially small proliferative probabilities, the regulative role of the interaction will be strengthened with the decline of the intrinsic proliferative probabilities. For the high replication rates of an individual and the cooperative interactions, the proliferative probability almost has no effect. We compute the dependences of $R$ on the interactions between the cells under the approximation of the nearest neighbor in the rim of an avascular tumor. Our results are helpful to qualitatively understand the influence of the interactions between the individuals on the growth rate in population systems.

Mixed interactions of localized waves in the three-component coupled derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations

The Darboux transformation of the three-component coupled derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations is constructed, based on the special vector solution elaborately generated from the corresponding Lax pair, various interactions of localized waves are derived. Here, we focus on the higher-order interactional solutions among higher-order rogue waves (RWs), multi-soliton and multi-breather. Instead of considering various arrangements among the three components $q_1$, $q_2$ and $q_3$, we define the same combination as the same type solution. Based on our method, these interactional solutions are completely classified into six types among these three components $q_1$, $q_2$ and $q_3$. In these six types interactional solutions, there are four mixed interactions of localized waves in three different components. In particular, the free parameters $α$ and $β$ paly an important role in dynamics structures of the interactional solutions, for example, different nonlinear localized waves merge with each other by increasing the absolute values of $α$ and $β$.

General high-order rogue wave to NLS-Boussinesq equation with the dynamical analysis

General high-order rogue waves of the NLS-Boussinesq equation are obtained by the KP-hierarchy reduction theory. These rogue waves are expressed with the determinants, whose entries are all algebraic forms. It is found that the fundamental rogue waves can be classified three patterns: four-petals state, dark state, bright state by choosing different parameter $α$ values. As the evolution of the parameter $α$. An interesting phenomena is discovered: the rogue wave changes from four-petals state to dark state, whereafter to the bright state, which are consistent with the change of the corresponding critical points to the function of two variables. Furthermore, the dynamics of second-order and third-order rogue waves are presented in detail, which can be regarded as the nonlinear superposition of the fundamental rogue waves.

Dynamics of Rogue Waves in the Partially PT-symmetric Nonlocal Davey-Stewartson Systems

In this work, we study the dynamics of rogue waves in the partially $\cal{PT}$-symmetric nonlocal Davey-Stewartson(DS) systems. Using the Darboux transformation method, general rogue waves in the partially $\cal{PT}$-symmetric nonlocal DS equations are derived. For the partially $\cal{PT}$-symmetric nonlocal DS-I equation, the solutions are obtained and expressed in term of determinants. For the partially $\cal{PT}$-symmetric DS-II equation, the solutions are represented as quasi-Gram determinants. It is shown that the fundamental rogue waves in these two systems are rational solutions which arises from a constant background at $t\rightarrow -\infty$, and develops finite-time singularity on an entire hyperbola in the spatial plane at the critical time. It is also shown that the interaction of several fundamental rogue waves is described by the multi rogue waves. And the interaction of fundamental rogue waves with dark and anti-dark rational travelling waves generates the novel hybrid-pattern waves. However, no high-order rogue waves are found in this partially $\cal{PT}$-symmetric nonlocal DS systems. Instead, it can produce some high-order travelling waves from the high-order rational solutions.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

General high-order rogue waves of the (1+1)-dimensional Yajima-Oikawa system

General high-order rogue wave solutions for the (1+1)-dimensional Yajima-Oikawa (YO) system are derived by using Hirota's bilinear method and the KP-hierarchy reduction technique. These rogue wave solutions are presented in terms of determinants in which the elements are algebraic expressions. The dynamics of first and higher-order rogue wave are investigated in details for different values of the free parameters. It is shown that the fundamental (first-order) rogue waves can be classified into three different patterns: bright, intermediate and dark ones. The high-order rogue waves correspond to the superposition of fundamental rogue waves. Especially, compared with the nonlinear Schodinger equation, there exists an essential parameter αto control the pattern of rogue wave for both first- and high-order rogue waves since the YO system does not possess the Galilean invariance.

A $(1.4 + ε)$-approximation algorithm for the $2$-Max-Duo problem

The maximum duo-preservation string mapping (Max-Duo) problem is the complement of the well studied minimum common string partition (MCSP) problem, both of which have applications in many fields including text compression and bioinformatics. $k$-Max-Duo is the restricted version of Max-Duo, where every letter of the alphabet occurs at most $k$ times in each of the strings, which is readily reduced into the well known maximum independent set (MIS) problem on a graph of maximum degree $Δ\le 6(k-1)$. In particular, $2$-Max-Duo can then be approximated arbitrarily close to $1.8$ using the state-of-the-art approximation algorithm for the MIS problem. $2$-Max-Duo was proved APX-hard and very recently a $(1.6 + ε)$-approximation was claimed, for any $ε> 0$. In this paper, we present a vertex-degree reduction technique, based on which, we show that $2$-Max-Duo can be approximated arbitrarily close to $1.4$.

A New Real Structure-preserving Quaternion QR Algorithm

New real structure-preserving decompositions are introduced to develop fast and robust algorithms for the (right) eigenproblem of general quaternion matrices. Under the orthogonally JRS-symplectic transformations, the Francis JRS-QR step and the JRS-QR algorithm are firstly proposed for JRS-symmetric matrices and then applied to calculate the Schur forms of quaternion matrices. A novel quaternion Givens matrix is defined and utilized to compute the QR factorization of quaternion Hessenberg matrices. An implicit double shift quaternion QR algorithm is presented with a technique for automatically choosing shifts and within real operations. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of newly proposed algorithms.

General $N$-Dark Soliton Solutions of the Multi-Component Mel'nikov System

A general form of $N$-dark soliton solutions of the multi-component Mel'nikov system is presented. Taking the coupled Mel'nikov system comprised of two-component short waves and one-component long wave as an example, its general $N$-dark-dark soliton solutions in Gram determinant form are constructed through the KP hierarchy reduction method. The dynamics of single dark-dark soliton and two dark-dark solitons are discussed in detail. It can be shown that the collisions of dark-dark solitons are elastic and energies of the solitons in different components completely transmit through. In addition, the dark-dark soliton bound states including both stationary and moving cases are also investigated. An interesting feature for the coupled Mel'nikov system is that the stationary dark-dark soliton bound states can exist for all possible combinations of nonlinearity coefficients including all-positive, all-negative and mixed types, while the moving case are possible when they take opposite signs or they are both negative. The dynamics and several interesting structures of the solutions are illustrated through some figures.
