Spike-Threshold Variability Originated from Separatrix-Crossing in Neuronal Dynamics

The threshold voltage for action potential generation is a key regulator of neuronal signal transduction, yet the mechanism of its dynamic variation is still not well described. In this paper, we propose that threshold phenomena can be classified as parameter thresholds and state thresholds. Voltage thresholds which belong to the state threshold are determined by the `general separatrix' in state space. We demonstrate that the separatrix generally exists in the state space of neuron models. The general form of separatrix was assumed as the function of both states and stimuli and the previously assumed threshold evolving equation versus time is naturally deduced from the separatrix. In terms of neuron dynamics, the threshold voltage variation, which is affected by different stimuli, is determined by crossing the separatrix at different points in state space. We suggest that the separatrix-crossing mechanism in state space is the intrinsic dynamic mechanism for threshold voltages and post-stimulus threshold phenomena. These proposals are also systematically verified in example models, three of which have analytic separatrices and one is the classic Hodgkin-Huxley model. The separatrix-crossing framework provides an overview of the neuronal threshold and will facilitate understanding of the nature of threshold variability.

Luminescent and absorptive metal-coated emulsions for micro-velocimetry

Fluorescent latex beads have been widely used as tracers in microfluidics over for the last decades. They have the advantages to be density matched with water and to be easily localizable using fluorescence microscopy. We have recently synthesized silver-coated oil droplets that are both luminescent and absorptive, by first coating the oil interface with a polydopamine layer and then depositing a silver layer by a redox process. They have a mean diameter of 6 μm and a their density has been matched to the density of water by adjusting the thickness of the metallic layer. In this work we used these particles as tracers to measure the velocity profile of a water flow in a PDMS microchannel with a rectangular cross-section, which allowed us to confirm the predictions of the Stokes equation with results comparable to those of common submicronic polystyrene particles.

Modulation instability and controllable rogue waves with multiple compression points for periodically modulated coupled Hirota equations

Based on modulation instability analysis and generalized Darboux transformation, we derive a hierarchy of rogue wave solutions for a variable-coefficients coupled Hirota equations. The explicit first-order rogue wave solution is presented, and the dark-bright and composite rogue waves with multiple compression points are shown by choosing sufficiently large periodic modulation amplitudes in the coefficients of the coupled equations. Also, the dark-bright and composite Peregrine combs are generated from the multiple compression points. For the second-order case, the darkbright three sisters, rogue wave quartets and sextets structures with one or more rogue waves involving multiple compression points are put forward, respectively. Furthermore, some wave characteristics such as the difference between light intensity and continuous wave background, and pulse energy evolution of the dark rogue wave solution features multiple compression points are discussed.

The Large Deviation Principle and Steady-state Fluctuation Theorem for the Entropy Production Rate of a Stochastic Process in Magnetic Fields

Fluctuation theorem is one of the major achievements in the field of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics during the past two decades. Steady-state fluctuation theorem of sample entropy production rate in terms of large deviation principle for diffusion processes have not been rigorously proved yet due to technical difficulties. Here we give a proof for the steady-state fluctuation theorem of a diffusion process in magnetic fields, with explicit expressions of the free energy function and rate function. The proof is based on the Karhunen-Loéve expansion of complex-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

An integrable semi-discretization of the coupled Yajima--Oikawa system

In the present paper, an integrable semi-discrete analogue of the one-dimensional coupled Yajima--Oikawa system, which is comprised of multicomponent short-wave and one component long-wave, is proposed by using Hirota's bilinear method. Based on the reductions of the Bäcklund transformations of the semi-discrete BKP hierarchy, both the bright and dark soliton (for the short-wave components) solutions in terms of pfaffians are constructed.

Firing dynamics of an autaptic neuron

Autapses are synapses that connect a neuron to itself in the nervous system. Previously, both experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated that autaptic connections in the nervous system have a significant physiological function. Autapses in nature provide self-delayed feedback, thus introducing an additional time scale to neuronal activities and causing many dynamic behaviors in neurons. Recently, theoretical studies have revealed that an autapse provides a control option for adjusting the response of a neuron: e.g., an autaptic connection can cause the electrical activities of the Hindmarsh-Rose neuron to switch between quiescent, periodic, and chaotic firing patterns; an autapse can enhance or suppress the mode-locking status of a neuron injected with sinusoidal current; and the firing frequency and interspike interval distributions of the response spike train can also be modified by the autapse. In this paper, we review recent studies that showed how an autapse affects the response of a single neuron.

Multi-dark soliton solutions of the two-dimensional multi-component Yajima-Oikawa systems

We present a general form of multi-dark soliton solutions of two-dimensional multi-component soliton systems. Multi-dark soliton solutions of the two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) multi-component Yajima-Oikawa (YO) systems, which are often called the 2D and 1D multi-component long wave-short wave resonance interaction systems, are studied in detail. Taking the 2D coupled YO system with two short wave and one long wave components as an example, we derive the general $N$-dark-dark soliton solution in both the Gram type and Wronski type determinant forms for the 2D coupled YO system via the KP hierarchy reduction method. By imposing certain constraint conditions, the general $N$-dark-dark soliton solution of the 1D coupled YO system is further obtained. The dynamics of one dark-dark and two dark-dark solitons are analyzed in detail. In contrast with bright-bright soliton collisions, it is shown that dark-dark soliton collisions are elastic and there is no energy exchange among solitons in different components. Moreover, the dark-dark soliton bound states including the stationary and moving ones are discussed. For the stationary case, the bound states exist up to arbitrary order, whereas, for the moving case, only the two-soliton bound state is possible under the condition that the coefficients of nonlinear terms have opposite signs.

Integrable discretizations and self-adaptive moving mesh method for a coupled short pulse equation

In the present paper, integrable semi-discrete and fully discrete analogues of a coupled short pulse (CSP) equation are constructed. The key of the construction is the bilinear forms and determinant structure of solutions of the CSP equation. We also construct Nsoliton solutions for the semi-discrete and fully discrete analogues of the CSP equations in the form of Casorati determinant. In the continuous limit, we show that the fully discrete CSP equation converges to the semi-discrete CSP equation, then further to the continuous CSP equation. Moreover, the integrable semi-discretization of the CSP equation is used as a selfadaptive moving mesh method for numerical simulations. The numerical results agree with the analytical results very well.

General Mixed Multi-Soliton Solutions to One-Dimensional Multicomponent Yajima-Oikawa System

In this paper, we derive a general mixed (bright-dark) multi-soliton solution to a one-dimensional multicomponent Yajima-Oikawa (YO) system, i.e., the (M+1)-component YO system comprised of M-component short waves (SWs) and one-component long wave (LW) for all possible combinations of nonlinearity coefficients including positive, negative and mixed types. With the help of the KP-hierarchy reduction method, we firstly construct two types of general mixed N-soliton solution (two-bright-one-dark soliton and one-bright-two-dark one for SW components) to the (3+1)-component YO system in detail. Then by extending the corresponding analysis to the (M+1)-component YO system, a general mixed N-soliton solution in Gram determinant form is obtained. The expression of the mixed soliton solution also contains the general all bright and all dark N-soliton solution as special cases. Besides, the dynamical analysis shows that the inelastic collision can only take place among SW components when at least two SW components have bright solitons in mixed type soliton solution. Whereas, the dark solitons in SW components and the bright soliton in LW component always undergo usual elastic collision.

Rational solutions to multicomponent Yajima-Oikawa systems: from two dimension to one dimension

Exact explicit rational solutions of two- and one- dimensional multicomponent Yajima-Oikawa (YO) systems, which contain multi-short-wave components and single long-wave one, are presented by using the bilinear method. For two-dimensional system, the fundamental rational solution first describes the localized lumps, which have three different patterns: bright, intermediate and dark states. Then, rogue waves can be obtained under certain parameter conditions and their behaviors are also classified to above three patterns with different definition. It is shown that the simplest (fundamental) rogue waves are line localized waves which arise from the constant background with a line profile and then disappear into the constant background again. In particular, two-dimensional intermediate and dark counterparts of rogue wave are found with the different parameter requirements. We demonstrate that multirogue waves describe the interaction of several fundamental rogue waves, in which interesting curvy wave patterns appear in the intermediate times. Different curvy wave patterns form in the interaction of different types fundamental rogue waves. Higher-order rogue waves exhibit the dynamic behaviors that the wave structures start from lump and then retreats back to it, and this transient wave possesses the patterns such as parabolas. Furthermore, different states of higher-order rogue wave result in completely distinguishing lumps and parabolas. Moreover, one-dimensional rogue wave solutions with three states are constructed through the further reduction. Specifically, higher-order rogue wave in one dimensional case is derived under the parameter constraints.

Unbiased Correction Relations for Galaxy Cluster properties Derived from Chandra and XMM-Newton

We use a sample of 62 clusters of galaxies to investigate the discrepancies of gas temperature and total mass within r500 between XMM-Newton and Chandra data. Comparisons of the properties show that: (1) Both the de-projected and projected temperatures determined by Chandra are higher than those of XMM-Newton and there is a good linear relation for the de-projected temperature. (2) The Chandra mass is much higher than XMM-Newton mass with a bias of 0.15. To explore the reasons for the discrepancy in mass, we recalculate the Chandra mass (expressed as M_c) by modifying its temperature with the de-projected temperature relation. The results show that M_c is more close to the XMM-Newton mass with the bias reducing to 0.02. Moreover, M_c are corrected with the r500 measured by XMM-Newton and the intrinsic scatter is significantly improved with the value reducing from 0.20 to 0.12. These mean that the temperature bias may be the main factor causing the mass bias. At last, we find that M_c is consistent with the corresponding XMM-Newton mass derived directly from our mass relation at a given Chandra mass. Thus, the de-projected temperature and mass relations can provide unbiased corrections for galaxy cluster properties derived from Chandra and XMM-Newton.

The construction of two-dimensional optimal systems for the invariant solutions

To search for inequivalent group invariant solutions, a general and systematic approach is established to construct two-dimensional optimal systems, which is based on commutator relations, adjoint matrix and the invariants. The details of computing all the invariants for two-dimensional subalgebras is presented and the optimality of twodimensional optimal systems is shown clearly under different values of invariants, with no further proof. Applying the algorithm to (1+1)-dimensional heat equation and (2+1)-dimensional Navier-Stokes (NS) equation, their twodimensional optimal systems are obtained, respectively. For the heat equation, eleven two-parameter elements in the optimal system are found one by one, which are discovered more comprehensive. The two-dimensional optimal system of NS equations is used to generate intrinsically different reduced ordinary differential equations and some interesting explicit solutions are provided.

A direct algorithm of one-dimensional optimal system for the group invariant solutions

A direct and systematic algorithm is proposed to find one-dimensional optimal system for the group invariant solutions, which is attributed to the classification of its corresponding one-dimensional Lie algebra. Since the method is based on different values of all the invariants, the process itself can both guarantee the comprehensiveness and demonstrate the inequivalence of the optimal system, with no further proof. To illustrate our method more clearly , we give a couple of well-known examples: the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the heat equation.

A digital CDS technique and the performance testing

Readout noise is a critical parameter for characterizing the performance of charge-coupled devices (CCDs), which can be greatly reduced by the correlated double sampling (CDS) circuit. However, conventional CDS circuit inevitably introduces new noises since it consists of several active analog components such as operational amplifiers. This paper proposes a digital CDS circuit technique, which transforms the pre-amplified CCD signal into a train of digital presentations by a high-speed data acquisition card directly without the noisy CDS circuit first, then implement the digital CDS algorithm through numerical method. The readout noise of 3.3 e$^{-}$ and the energy resolution of 121 eV@5.9keV can be achieved via the digital CDS technique.

Generalized Darboux transformation and higher-order rogue wave solutions of the coupled Hirota equations

This paper is dedicated to study higher-order rogue wave solutions of the coupled Hirota equations with high-order nonlinear effects like the third dispersion, self-steepening and stimulated Raman scattering terms. By using the generalized Darboux transformation, a unified representation of Nth-order rogue wave solution with 3N+1 free parameters is obtained. In particular, the first-order rogue wave solution containing polynomials of fourth order, and the second-order rogue wave solution consisting of polynomials of eighth order are explicitly presented. Through the numerical plots, we show that four or six fundamental rogue waves can coexist in the second-order rogue waves. By adjusting the values of some free parameters, different kinds of spatial-temporal distribution structures such as circular, quadrilateral, triangular, line and fundamental patterns are exhibited. Moreover, we see that nine or twelve fundamental rogue waves can synchronously emerge in the third-order rogue waves. The more intricate spatialtemporal distribution shapes are shown via adequate choices of the free parameters. Several wave characteristics such as the amplitudes and the coordinate positions of the highest peaks in the rogue waves are discussed.

On the fourth moment theorem for the complex multiple Wiener-Itô integrals

In this paper, a product formula of Hermite polynomials is given and then the relation between the real Wiener-Itô chaos and the complex Wiener-Itô chaos (or: multiple integrals) is shown. By this relation and the known multivariate extension of the fourth moment theorem for the real multiple integrals, the fourth moment theorem (or say: the Nualart-Peccati criterion) for the complex Wiener-Itô multiple integrals is obtained.

Generalized Darboux transformation and localized waves in coupled Hirota equations

In this paper, we construct a generalized Darboux transformation to the coupled Hirota equations with high-order nonlinear effects like the third dispersion, self-steepening and inelastic Raman scattering terms. As application, an Nth-order localized wave solution on the plane backgrounds with the same spectral parameter is derived through the direct iterative rule. In particular, some semi-rational, multi-parametric localized wave solutions are obtained: (1) Vector generalization of the first- and the second-order rogue wave solution; (2) Interactional solutions between a dark-bright soliton and a rogue wave, two dark-bright solitons and a second-order rogue wave; (3) Interactional solutions between a breather and a rogue wave, two breathers and a second-order rogue wave. The results further reveal the striking dynamic structures of localized waves in complex coupled systems.

Proton irradiation effect on SCDs

The Low Energy X-ray Telescope is a main payload on the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope satellite. The swept charge device is selected for the Low Energy X-ray Telescope. As swept charge devices are sensitive to proton irradiation, irradiation test was carried out on the HI-13 accelerator at the China Institute of Atomic Energy. The beam energy was measured to be 10 MeV at the SCD. The proton fluence delivered to the SCD was $3\times10^{8}\mathrm{protons}/\mathrm{cm}^{2}$ over two hours. It is concluded that the proton irradiation affects both the dark current and the charge transfer inefficiency of the SCD through comparing the performance both before and after the irradiation. The energy resolution of the proton-irradiated SCD is 212 eV@5.9 keV at $-60\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$, while it before irradiated is 134 eV. Moreover, better performance can be reached by lowering the operating temperature of the SCD on orbit.
