When does the Physarum Solver Distinguish the Shortest Path from other Paths: the Transition Point and its Applications

Physarum solver, also called the physarum polycephalum inspired algorithm (PPA), is a newly developed bio-inspired algorithm that has an inherent ability to find the shortest path in a given graph. Recent research has proposed methods to develop this algorithm further by accelerating the original PPA (OPPA)'s path-finding process. However, when does the PPA ascertain that the shortest path has been found? Is there a point after which the PPA could distinguish the shortest path from other paths? By innovatively proposing the concept of the dominant path (D-Path), the exact moment, named the transition point (T-Point), when the PPA finds the shortest path can be identified. Based on the D-Path and T-Point, a newly accelerated PPA named OPPA-D using the proposed termination criterion is developed which is superior to all other baseline algorithms according to the experiments conducted in this paper. The validity and the superiority of the proposed termination criterion is also demonstrated. Furthermore, an evaluation method is proposed to provide new insights for the comparison of different accelerated OPPAs. The breakthrough of this paper lies in using D-path and T-point to terminate the OPPA. The novel termination criterion reveals the actual performance of this OPPA. This OPPA is the fastest algorithm, outperforming some so-called accelerated OPPAs. Furthermore, we explain why some existing works inappropriately claim to be accelerated algorithms is in fact a product of inappropriate termination criterion, thus giving rise to the illusion that the method is accelerated.

Observation of anti-damping spin-orbit torques generated by in-plane and out-of-plane spin polarizations in MnPd3

High spin-orbit torques (SOTs) generated by topological materials and heavy metals interfaced with a ferromagnetic layer show promise for next generation magnetic memory and logic devices. SOTs generated from the in-plane spin polarization along y-axis originated by the spin Hall and Edelstein effects can switch magnetization collinear with the spin polarization in the absence of external magnetic fields. However, an external magnetic field is required to switch the magnetization along x and z-axes via SOT generated by y-spin polarization. Here, we present that the above limitation can be circumvented by unconventional SOT in magnetron-sputtered thin film MnPd3. In addition to the conventional in-plane anti-damping-like torque due to the y-spin polarization, out-of-plane and in-plane anti-damping-like torques originating from z-spin and x-spin polarizations, respectively have been observed at room temperature. The spin torque efficiency corresponding to the y-spin polarization from MnPd3 thin films grown on thermally oxidized silicon substrate and post annealed at 400 Deg C is 0.34 - 0.44. Remarkably, we have demonstrated complete external magnetic field-free switching of perpendicular Co layer via unconventional out-of-plane anti-damping-like torque from z-spin polarization. Based on the density functional theory calculations, we determine that the observed x- and z- spin polarizations with the in-plane charge current are due to the low symmetry of the (114) oriented MnPd3 thin films. Taken together, the new material reported here provides a path to realize a practical spin channel in ultrafast magnetic memory and logic devices.

Higher order information volume of mass function

For a certain moment, the information volume represented in a probability space can be accurately measured by Shannon entropy. But in real life, the results of things usually change over time, and the prediction of the information volume contained in the future is still an open question. Deng entropy proposed by Deng in recent years is widely applied on measuring the uncertainty, but its physical explanation is controversial. In this paper, we give Deng entropy a new explanation based on the fractal idea, and proposed its generalization called time fractal-based (TFB) entropy. The TFB entropy is recognized as predicting the uncertainty over a period of time by splitting times, and its maximum value, called higher order information volume of mass function (HOIVMF), can express more uncertain information than all of existing methods.

Identifying influential nodes in complex networks: Effective distance gravity model

The identification of important nodes in complex networks is an area of exciting growth due to its applications across various disciplines like disease controlling, community finding, data mining, network system controlling, just to name a few. Many measures have thus been proposed to date, and these measures are either based on the locality of nodes or the global nature of the network. These measures typically use distance based on the concept of traditional Euclidean Distance, which only focus on the local static geographic distance between nodes but ignore the interaction between nodes in real-world networks. However, a variety of factors should be considered for the purpose of identifying influential nodes, such as degree, edge, direction and weight. Some methods based on evidence theory have also been proposed. In this paper, we have proposed an original and novel gravity model with effective distance for identifying influential nodes based on information fusion and multi-level processing. Our method is able to comprehensively consider the global and local information of the complex network, and also utilize the effective distance to replace the Euclidean Distance. This allows us to fully consider the complex topological structure of the real network, as well as the dynamic interaction information between nodes. In order to validate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we have utilized the susceptible infected (SI) model to carry out a variety of simulations on eight different real-world networks using six existing well-known methods. The experimental results indicate the reasonableness and effectiveness of our proposed method.

The Capacity Constraint Physarum Solver

Physarum polycephalum inspired algorithm (PPA), also known as the Physarum Solver, has attracted great attention. By modelling real-world problems into a graph with network flow and adopting proper equations to calculate the distance between the nodes in the graph, PPA could be used to solve system optimization problems or user equilibrium problems. However, some problems such as the maximum flow (MF) problem, minimum-cost-maximum-flow (MCMF) problem, and link-capacitated traffic assignment problem (CTAP), require the flow flowing through links to follow capacity constraints. Motivated by the lack of related PPA-based research, a novel framework, the capacitated physarum polycephalum inspired algorithm (CPPA), is proposed to allow capacity constraints toward link flow in the PPA. To prove the validity of the CPPA, we developed three applications of the CPPA, i.e., the CPPA for the MF problem (CPPA-MF), the CPPA for the MCFC problem, and the CPPA for the link-capacitated traffic assignment problem (CPPA-CTAP). In the experiments, all the applications of the CPPA solve the problems successfully. Some of them demonstrate efficiency compared to the baseline algorithms. The experimental results prove the validation of using the CPPA framework to control link flow in the PPA is valid. The CPPA is also very robust and easy to implement since it could be successfully applied in three different scenarios. The proposed method shows that: having the ability to control the maximum among flow flowing through links in the PPA, the CPPA could tackle more complex real-world problems in the future.

Identification of influencers in complex networks by local information dimensionality

The identification of influential spreaders in complex networks is a popular topic in studies of network characteristics. Many centrality measures have been proposed to address this problem, but most have limitations. In this paper, a method for identifying influencers in complex networks via the local information dimensionality. The proposed method considers the local structural properties around the central node; therefore, the scale of locality only increases to half of the maximum value of the shortest distance from the central node. Thus, the proposed method considers the quasilocal information and reduces the computational complexity. The information (number of nodes) in boxes is described via the Shannon entropy, which is more reasonable. A node is more influential when its local information dimensionality is higher. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, five existing centrality measures are used as comparison methods to rank influential nodes in six real world complex networks. In addition, a susceptible infected (SI) model and Kendall's tau coefficient are applied to show the correlation between different methods. Experiment results show the superiority of the proposed method.

The vulnerability of communities in complex network: An entropy approach

Measuring the vulnerability of communities in complex network has become an important topic in the research of complex system. Numerous existing vulnerability measures have been proposed to solve such problems, however, most of these methods have their own shortcomings and limitations. Therefore, a new entropy-based approach is proposed in this paper to address such problems. This measure combines the internal factors and external factors for each communities which can give the quantitative description of vulnerability of community. The internal factors contain the complexity degree of community and the number of edges inside the community, and the external factors contain the similarity degree between chosen community and other communities and the number of nodes outside the community. Considering community vulnerability from the perspective of entropy provides a new solution to such problem. Due to sufficient consideration of community information, more reasonable vulnerability result can be obtained. In order to show the performance and effectiveness of this proposed method, one example network and three real-world complex network is used to compare with some exiting methods, and the sensitivity of weight factors is analysed by Sobol' indices. The experiment results demonstrate the reasonableness and superiority of this proposed method.

Vital Spreaders Identification in Complex Networks with Multi-Local Dimension

The important nodes identification has been an interesting problem in this issue. Several centrality measures have been proposed to solve this problem, but most of previous methods have their own limitations. To address this problem more effectively, multi-local dimension (MLD) which is based on the fractal property is proposed to identify the vital spreaders in this paper. This proposed method considers the information contained in the box and $q$ plays a weighting coefficient for this partition information. MLD would have different expressions with different value of $q$, and it would degenerate to local information dimension and variant of local dimension when $q = 1$ when $q = 0$ respectively, both of which have been effective identification method for influential nodes. Thus, MLD would be a more general method which can degenerate to some exiting centrality measures. In addition, different with classical methods, the node with low MLD would be more important in the network. Some comparison methods and real-world complex networks are applied in this paper to show the effectiveness and reasonableness of this proposed method. The experiment results show the superiority of this proposed method.

Modeling treatment events in disease progression

Ability to quantify and predict progression of a disease is fundamental for selecting an appropriate treatment. Many clinical metrics cannot be acquired frequently either because of their cost (e.g. MRI, gait analysis) or because they are inconvenient or harmful to a patient (e.g. biopsy, x-ray). In such scenarios, in order to estimate individual trajectories of disease progression, it is advantageous to leverage similarities between patients, i.e. the covariance of trajectories, and find a latent representation of progression. Most of existing methods for estimating trajectories do not account for events in-between observations, what dramatically decreases their adequacy for clinical practice. In this study, we develop a machine learning framework named Coordinatewise-Soft-Impute (CSI) for analyzing disease progression from sparse observations in the presence of confounding events. CSI is guaranteed to converge to the global minimum of the corresponding optimization problem. Experimental results also demonstrates the effectiveness of CSI using both simulated and real dataset.

Optimal Cache Placement for Modified Coded Caching with Arbitrary Cache Size

We consider content caching between a service provider and multiple cache-enabled users, using the recently proposed modified coded caching scheme (MCCS) that provides an improved delivery strategy for random user requests. We develop the optimal cache placement solution for the MCCS with arbitrary cache size by formulating the cache placement as an optimization problem to minimize the average rate during the delivery phase under random user requests. Through reformulation, we show that the problem is a linear programming problem. By exploring the properties in the caching constraints, we obtain the optimal cache placement solution in closed-form. We verify that the existing cache placement scheme obtained at specific cache sizes is a special case of our solution. Numerical studies show how the caching gain changes as the user population increases, as a result of different cache placement patterns.

OWA aggregation of multi-criteria with mixed uncertain fuzzy satisfactions

We apply the Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operator in multi-criteria decision-making. To satisfy different kinds of uncertainty, measure based dominance has been presented to gain the order of different criterion. However, this idea has not been applied in fuzzy system until now. In this paper, we focus on the situation where the linguistic satisfactions are fuzzy measures instead of the exact values. We review the concept of OWA operator and discuss the order mechanism of fuzzy number. Then we combine with measure-based dominance to give an overall score of each alternatives. An example is illustrated to show the whole procedure.

A DEMATEL-Based Completion Method for Incomplete Pairwise Comparison Matrix in AHP

Pairwise comparison matrix as a crucial component of AHP, presents the prefer- ence relations among alternatives. However, in many cases, the pairwise comparison matrix is difficult to complete, which obstructs the subsequent operations of the clas- sical AHP. In this paper, based on DEMATEL which has ability to derive the total relation matrix from direct relation matrix, a new completion method for incomplete pairwise comparison matrix is proposed. The proposed method provides a new per- spective to estimate the missing values with explicit physical meaning. Besides, the proposed method has low computational cost. This promising method has a wide application in multi-criteria decision-making.

Impact of Preference and Equivocators on Opinion Dynamics with Evolutionary Game Framework

Opinion dynamics, aiming to understand the evolution of collective behavior through various interaction mechanisms of opinions, represents one of the most challenges in natural and social science. To elucidate this issue clearly, binary opinion model becomes a useful framework, where agents can take an independent opinion. Inspired by the realistic observations, here we propose two basic interaction mechanisms of binary opinion model: one is the so-called BSO model in which players benefit from holding the same opinion; the other is called BDO model in which players benefit from taking different opinions. In terms of these two basic models, the synthetical effect of opinion preference and equivocators on the evolution of binary opinion is studied under the framework of evolutionary game theory (EGT), where the replicator equation (RE) is employed to mimick the evolution of opinions. By means of numerous simulations, we show the theoretical equilibrium states of binary opinion dynamics, and mathematically analyze the stability of each equilibrium state as well.

A quantum extension to inspection game

Quantum game theory is a new interdisciplinary field between game theory and physical research. In this paper, we extend the classical inspection game into a quantum game version by quantizing the strategy space and importing entanglement between players. Our result shows that the quantum inspection game has various Nash equilibrium depending on the initial quantum state of the game. It is also shown that quantization can respectively help each player to increase his own payoff, yet fails to bring Pareto improvement for the collective payoff in the quantum inspection game.

Quantum games of opinion formation based on the Marinatto-Weber quantum game scheme

Quantization becomes a new way to study classical game theory since quantum strategies and quantum games have been proposed. In previous studies, many typical game models, such as prisoner's dilemma, battle of the sexes, Hawk-Dove game, have been investigated by using quantization approaches. In this paper, several game models of opinion formations have been quantized based on the Marinatto-Weber quantum game scheme, a frequently used scheme to convert classical games to quantum versions. Our results show that the quantization can change fascinatingly the properties of some classical opinion formation game models so as to generate win-win outcomes.

Transformation of basic probability assignments to probabilities based on a new entropy measure

Dempster-Shafer evidence theory is an efficient mathematical tool to deal with uncertain information. In that theory, basic probability assignment (BPA) is the basic element for the expression and inference of uncertainty. Decision-making based on BPA is still an open issue in Dempster-Shafer evidence theory. In this paper, a novel approach of transforming basic probability assignments to probabilities is proposed based on Deng entropy which is a new measure for the uncertainty of BPA. The principle of the proposed method is to minimize the difference of uncertainties involving in the given BPA and obtained probability distribution. Numerical examples are given to show the proposed approach.

Measure the similarity of nodes in the complex networks

Measure the similarity of the nodes in the complex networks have interested many researchers to explore it. In this paper, a new method which is based on the degree centrality and the Relative-entropy is proposed to measure the similarity of the nodes in the complex networks. The results in this paper show that, the nodes which have a common structure property always have a high similarity to others nodes. The nodes which have a high influential to others always have a small value of similarity to other nodes and the marginal nodes also have a low similar to other nodes. The results in this paper show that the proposed method is useful and reasonable to measure the similarity of the nodes in the complex networks.

Nonextensive analysis on the local structure entropy of complex networks

The local structure entropy is a new method which is proposed to identify the influential nodes in the complex networks. In this paper a new form of the local structure entropy of the complex networks is proposed based on the Tsallis entropy. The value of the entropic index $q$ will influence the property of the local structure entropy. When the value of $q$ is equal to 0, the nonextensive local structure entropy is degenerated to a new form of the degree centrality. When the value of $q$ is equal to 1, the nonextensive local structure entropy is degenerated to the existing form of the local structure entropy. We also have find a nonextensive threshold value in the nonextensive local structure entropy. When the value of $q$ is bigger than the nonextensive threshold value, change the value of $q$ will has no influence on the property of the local structure entropy, and different complex networks have different nonextensive threshold value. The results in this paper show that the new nonextensive local structure entropy is a generalised of the local structure entropy. It is more reasonable and useful than the existing one.
