Observation of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between photon and polariton

Light-matter interactions underlie many quantum technologies, yet whether quasiparticles formed from such interactions preserve the full quantum state of light remains unresolved. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), a class of polaritons formed by interacting photons with free-electron oscillations at metal-dielectric interfaces, are prime candidates to explore this question. Here we demonstrate quantum interference between single photons and SPPs using an Au-SiN$_{\mathrm{x}}$ integrated photonic-plasmonic device. Our results reveal that SPPs retain the indistinguishability of their excitation photons, establishing SPP as a viable quantum information carrier and opening a potential route toward photonic-plasmonic quantum circuitry.

Quantum-interference metrology of dissipative Kerr solitons

Dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators underpin chip-scale frequency combs with applications ranging from coherent telecommunications to precision spectroscopy. Yet the characterization of their intrinsic femtosecond temporal structure remains challenging, as the low pulse energy and broad spectral bandwidth necessitate optical amplification and careful dispersion compensation in conventional ultrafast diagnostics, both of which can significantly distort the waveform. Here we demonstrate a quantum-interference metrology of microcomb solitons based on Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. By attenuating the soliton stream to the single-photon level and measuring fourth-order interference, we directly retrieve near transform-limited pulse durations without amplification or dispersion management, remaining accurate even after propagation through 25 km of standard fiber. The same interferogram also provides direct access to the temporal separations in multi-soliton states by converting inter-soliton separations into additional interference dips at corresponding delays, enabling sub-picosecond characterization of their intracavity temporal structure. This quantum-inspired paradigm introduces a fundamentally new metrological approach that is immune to amplification and dispersion distortions, offering a powerful tool for the characterization of complex soliton physics.

Integrated time-bin entangled quantum light source on a 4H-SiC microring chip

Integrated time-bin-entangled photon-pair source with cavity-enhanced nonlinear optical processes is essential for quantum information technologies. However, microcavities with a high quality factor inherently introduce a trade-off between generation efficiency and photon bandwidth, which hinders the development of high-speed quantum networks with an integrated source. Here, we address this challenge by optimizing the nonlinearity property of the material and the geometry of the integrated microring resonator with a 4H-silicon carbide platform. Operating at a loaded quality factor of 1.9 $\times$ 10^5 - spectral bandwidth of 1.0 GHz and pumped with 300-ps double pulses separated by 1.25 ns at a repetition rate of 160 MHz, the device achieves a time-bin-entangled photon-pair generation rate of 1.35 $\times$ 10^7 s^-1 mW^-2. A raw visibility of 95.55 $\pm$ 0.18% is measured, showing a violation of Bell's inequality by more than 138 standard deviations, and a fidelity of 94.37 $\pm$ 0.22% is obtained by quantum state tomography. These results provide a scalable pathway to an efficient and broadband time-bin entangled quantum light source, overcoming intrinsic limitations of cavity-based designs and advancing integrated platforms for future quantum communication networks.

Fast and accurate extraction of ultra-high quality factor from cavity ring-down measurement

Cavity ring-down is an essential test to measure ultra-high quality factor (UHQ) optical cavities, which is, however, frequently misinterpreted due to lacking of a specified analysis guideline. Here we clarify the basic property of cavity ring down and present a step-by-step method that enables extraction of the overall quality factor, as well as the intrinsic loss and coupling state of UHQ cavities with better fidelity and simplicity than prior schemes. Our work can facilitate acurrate design and characterization of UHQ cavities for ultra-low noise lasers, high finesse reference cavities, and ultra-narrow optical filters.

Phase regeneration of QPSK signals based on Kerr soliton combs in a highly nonlinear optical fiber

We demonstrate an all-optical phase regeneration technique based on Kerr soliton combs, which can realize degraded quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) signal regeneration through phase-sensitive amplification. A Kerr soliton comb is generated at the receiver side of optical communication systems based on a carrier recovery scheme and is used as coherent dual pumps to achieve phase regeneration. Our study will enhance the relay and reception performance of all-optical communication systems.

High-quality multi-wavelength quantum light sources on silicon nitride micro-ring chip

Multi-wavelength quantum light sources, especially at telecom band, are extremely desired in quantum information technology. Despite recent impressive advances, such a quantum light source with high quality remains challenging. Here we demonstrate a multi-wavelength quantum light source using a silicon nitride micro-ring with a free spectral range of 200 GHz. The generation of eight pairs of correlated photons is ensured in a wavelength range of 25.6 nm. With device optimization and noise-rejecting filters, our source enables the generation of heralded single-photons - at a rate of 62 kHz with $g^{(2)}_{h}(0)=0.014\pm0.001$, and the generation of energy-time entangled photons - with a visibility of $99.39\pm 0.45\%$ in the Franson interferometer. These results, at room temperature and telecom wavelength, in a CMOS compatible platform, represent an important step towards integrated quantum light devices for the quantum networks.

Wavelength-division multiplexing communications using integrated soliton microcomb laser source

In this Letter, we investigate the feasibility and performance of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communications using an integrated dissipative Kerr soliton micro-comb as the multi-channel laser source. First, we confirm that soliton microcomb pumped directly by a DFB laser self-injection locked to the host micro-cavity has sufficiently low frequency and amplitude noises to encode advanced data formats. Second, perfect soliton crystals are exploited to boost the power level of each microcomb line, so that they can be directly used for data modulation excluding pre-amplification. Third, in a proof-of-concept experiment we demonstrate 7-channel 16-QAM data transmissions using an integrated perfect soliton microcomb as the laser carriers, excellent data receiving performances are obtained under various fiber link distances and amplifier configurations. Our study reveals that fully integrated Kerr soliton microcombs are viable and advantageous for optical data communications.

Polarization multiplexed dissipative Kerr solitons in on-chip micro-resonator

We demonstrate polarization multiplexed dissipative Kerr solitons in an on-chip silicon nitride micro-resonator. In our experiment, TE- and TM-polarized soliton can be individually generated and controlled, thanks to their weak mutual interaction as the result of sufficiently different repetition rates and orthogonal polarization states. Furthermore, we find that TE- and TM-polarized solitons usually exhibit uncorrelated time jitters, therefore the frequency and phase coherence between the polarization multiplexed soliton microcombs change dramatically as a function of pump laser parameters, by optimizing which we achieve narrow dual-microcomb beat note linewidth as small as 4.4 kHz. Potential applications of on-chip polarization multiplexed soliton microcombs include Kerr comb spectral expansion, dual-comb metrology, and measurement of quantum entanglements.

Linking Physical Objects to Their Digital Twins via Fiducial Markers Designed for Invisibility to Humans

The ability to label and track physical objects that are assets in digital representations of the world is foundational to many complex systems. Simple, yet powerful methods such as bar- and QR-codes have been highly successful, e.g. in the retail space, but the lack of security, limited information content and impossibility of seamless integration with the environment have prevented a large-scale linking of physical objects to their digital twins. This paper proposes to link digital assets created through BIM with their physical counterparts using fiducial markers with patterns defined by Cholesteric Spherical Reflectors (CSRs), selective retroreflectors produced using liquid crystal self-assembly. The markers leverage the ability of CSRs to encode information that is easily detected and read with computer vision while remaining practically invisible to the human eye. We analyze the potential of a CSR-based infrastructure from the perspective of BIM, critically reviewing the outstanding challenges in applying this new class of functional materials, and we discuss extended opportunities arising in assisting autonomous mobile robots to reliably navigate human-populated environments, as well as in augmented reality.

Coherent optical communications using coherence-cloned Kerr soliton microcombs

Dissipative Kerr soliton microcomb has been recognized as a promising on-chip multi-wavelength laser source for fiber optical communications, as its comb lines possess frequency and phase stability far beyond independent lasers. In the scenarios of coherent optical transmission and interconnect, a highly beneficial but rarely explored target is to re-generate a Kerr soliton microcomb at the receiver side as local oscillators that conserve the frequency and phase property of the incoming data carriers, so that to enable coherent detection with minimized optical and electrical compensations. Here, by using the techniques of pump laser conveying and two-point locking, we implement re-generation of a Kerr soliton microcomb that faithfully clones the frequency and phase coherence of another microcomb sent from 50 km away. Moreover, leveraging the coherence-cloned soliton microcombs as carriers and local oscillators, we demonstrate terabit coherent data interconnect, wherein traditional digital processes for frequency offset estimation is totally dispensed with, and carrier phase estimation is substantially simplified via slowed-down phase estimation rate per channel and joint phase estimation among multiple channels. Our work reveals that, in addition to providing a multitude of laser tones, regulating the frequency and phase of Kerr soliton microcombs among transmitters and receivers can significantly improve coherent communication in terms of performance, power consumption, and simplicity.

Terabit optical OFDM superchannel transmission via coherent carriers of a hybrid chip-scale soliton frequency comb

We demonstrate seamless channel multiplexing and high bitrate superchannel transmission of coherent optical orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (CO-OFDM) data signals utilizing a dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) frequency comb generated in an on-chip microcavity. Aided by comb line multiplication through Nyquist pulse modulation, the high stability and mutual coherence among mode-locked Kerr comb lines are exploited for the first time to eliminate the guard intervals between communication channels and achieve full spectral density bandwidth utilization. Spectral efficiency as high as 2.625 bit/Hz/s is obtained for 180 CO-OFDM bands encoded with 12.75 Gbaud 8-QAM data, adding up to total bitrate of 6.885 Tb/s within 2.295 THz frequency comb bandwidth. Our study confirms that high coherence is the key superiority of Kerr soliton frequency combs over independent laser diodes, as a multi-spectral coherent laser source for high-bandwidth high-spectral-density transmission networks.
