Non-detection of Broad Hydrogen Radio Recombination Lines in Circinus Galaxy

The line widths of broad line regions (BLRs) of AGNs are key parameters for understanding the central super massive black holes (SMBHs). However, due to obscuration from dusty torus, optical recombination lines from BLRs in type II AGNs can not be directly detected. Radio recombination lines (RRLs), with low extinction, can be ideal tracers to probe emission from BLRs in type II AGNs. We performed RRL observations for H35$α$ and H36$α$ toward the center of Circinus galaxy with ALMA. Narrow components of H35$α$ and H36$α$, which are thought to be mainly from star forming regions around the nuclear region, are detected. However, only upper limits are obtained for broad H35$α$ and H36$α$. Since Circinus galaxy is one of the nearest AGN, non-detection of broad RRLs in Circinus galaxy at this band tells us that it is hopeless to detect broad RRL emission in local AGNs with current facilities. Submillimetre RRLs, with flux densities that are dozens of times higher than those at the millimetre level, could be the tools to directly detect BLRs in type II AGNs with ALMA, once its backend frequency coverage has been upgraded to several times better than its current capabilities.

Multiple gas acquisition events in galaxies with dual misaligned gas disks

Frequent accretion of external cold gas is thought to play an important role in galaxy assembly. However, almost all known kinematically misaligned galaxies identify only one gas disk that is misaligned with the stellar disk, implying a single gas acquisition event. Here we report a new configuration in two galaxies where both contain two gas disks misaligned with each other and also with the stellar disk. Such systems are not expected to be stable or long-lasting, challenging the traditional picture of gas accretion of galaxies and their angular momentum build-up. The differences in kinematic position angles are larger than 120° between the two gas disks, and 40° between each gas disk and the stellar component. The star formation activity is enhanced at the interface of the two gas disks compared with the other regions within the same galaxy. Such systems illustrate that low-redshift galaxies can still experience multiple gas acquisition events, and provide a new view into the origins of galactic gas.

Sub-percentage measure of distances to redshift of 0.1 by a new cosmic ruler

Distance-redshift diagrams probe expansion history of the Universe. We show that the stellar mass-binding energy (massE) relation of galaxies proposed in our previous study offers a new distance ruler at cosmic scales. By using elliptical galaxies in the main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we construct a distance-redshift diagram over the redshift range from 0.05 to 0.2 with the massE ruler. The best-fit dark energy density is 0.675+-0.079 for flat Lambda-CDM, consistent with those by other probes. At the median redshift of 0.11, the median distance is estimated to have a fractional error of 0.34%, much lower than those by supernova (SN) Ia and baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) and even exceeding their future capability at this redshift. The above low-z measurement is useful for probing dark energy that dominates at the late Universe. For a flat dark energy equation of state model (flat wCDM), the massE alone constrains w to an error that is only a factor of 2.2, 1.7 and 1.3 times larger than those by BAO, SN Ia, and cosmic microwave background (CMB), respectively.

SDSS IV MaNGA -- Star-Formation Driven Biconical Outflows in Face-On Galaxies

We find 132 face-on and low inclination galaxies with central star formation driven biconical gas outflows (FSFB) in the SDSS MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO) survey. The FSFB galaxies show either double peaked or broadened emission line profiles at their centres. The peak and maximum outflow velocities are 58 and 212 km/s, respectively. The gas velocity dispersion reveals a mild dependence on the central star formation surface density compatible with models of gas dispersion powered by the Jeans instability in gas clumps or by gas turbulence dissipation. We estimate the gas outflow rate and conclude that the central gas depletion time does not depend on galactic mass. In turn, the ratio of the gas outflow rate to the gas consumption rate by the star formation is low in massive galaxies and high in low-mass objects, while the star formation is a more rapid process of the gas consumption. We compare properties of the FSFB galaxies with a control sample of 375 comparison galaxies and find that the FSFB objects have high central concentration of star formation, and also younger central stellar population with respect to their periphery. We analysed the environment of the galaxies and identified nearby satellites and elements of low surface brightness structure. We see that many tidal-enhanced features that can be assigned to early and intermediate stages of galactic interaction are much more frequent in the FSFB galaxies with respect to the comparison sample. We conclude that the gas should be replenished via the accretion from small satellites.

The HI Gas Disk Thickness of the Ultra-diffuse Galaxy AGC 242019

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are as faint as dwarf galaxies but whose sizes are similar to those of spiral galaxies. A variety of formation mechanisms have been proposed, some of which could result in different disk thicknesses. In this study, we measure the radial profile of the HI scale height (h_g) and flaring angle (h_g/R) of AGC 242019 through the joint Poisson-Boltzmann equation based on its well spatially-resolved HI gas maps. The mean HI scale height of AGC 242019 is \approx 537.15 \pm 89.4 pc, and the mean flaring angle is \approx 0.19 \pm 0.03. As a comparison, we also derive the disk thickness for a sample of 14 dwarf irregulars. It is found that the HI disk of AGC 242019 has comparable thickness to dwarfs. This suggests that AGC 242019 is unlikely to experience much stronger stellar feedback than dwarf galaxies, which otherwise leads to a thicker disk for this galaxy.

HI content of massive red spiral galaxies observed by FAST

A sample of 279 massive red spirals was selected optically by Guo et al. (2020), among which 166 galaxies have been observed by the ALFALFA survey. In this work, we observe HI content of the rest 113 massive red spiral galaxies using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). 75 of the 113 galaxies have HI detection with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) greater than 4.7. Compared with the red spirals in the same sample that have been observed by the ALFALFA survey, galaxies observed by FAST have on average a higher S/N, and reach to a lower HI mass. To investigate why many red spirals contain a significant amount of HI mass, we check color profiles of the massive red spirals using images observed by the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. We find that galaxies with HI detection have bluer outer disks than the galaxies without HI detection, for both ALFALFA and FAST samples. For galaxies with HI detection, there exists a clear correlation between galaxy HI mass and g-r color at outer radius: galaxies with higher HI masses have bluer outer disks. The results indicate that optically selected massive red spirals are not fully quenched, and the HI gas observed in many of the galaxies may exist in their outer blue disks.

Dense Gas and Star Formation in Nearby Infrared Bright Galaxies: APEX survey of HCN and HCO+ J=2-1

Both Galactic and extragalactic studies on star formation suggest that stars form directly from dense molecular gas. To trace such high volume density gas, HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 have been widely used for their high dipole moments, relatively high abundances, and often being the strongest lines after CO. However, HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 emission could be arguably dominated by the gas components at low volume densities. HCN J=2-1 and HCO+ J=2-1, with more suitable critical densities and excitation requirements, would trace typical dense gas closely related to star formation. Here we report new observations of HCN J=2-1 and HCO+ J=2-1 towards 17 nearby infrared-bright galaxies with the APEX 12-m telescope. The correlation slopes between luminosities of HCN J=2-1, and HCO+ J=2-1 and total infrared emission are 1.03 +- 0.05 and 1.00 +- 0.05, respectively. The correlations of their surface densities, normalised with the area of radio/sub-millimeter continuum, show even tighter relations (Slopes: 0.99 +- 0.03 and 1.02 +- 0.03). The eight AGN-dominated galaxies show no significant difference from the eleven star-formation dominated galaxies in above relations. The average HCN/HCO+ ratios are 1.15 +- 0.26 and 0.98 +- 0.42 for AGN-dominated and star-formation dominated galaxies, respectively, without obvious dependencies on infrared luminosity, dust temperature, or infrared pumping. The Magellanic Clouds roughly follow the same correlations, expanding to eight orders of magnitude. On the other hand, ultra-luminous infrared galaxies with active galactic nucleus (AGN) systematically lay above the correlations, indicating potential biases introduced by AGNs.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Global Properties of Kinematically Misaligned Galaxies

We select 456 gas-star kinematically misaligned galaxies from the internal Product Launch-10 of MaNGA survey, including 74 star-forming (SF), 136 green-valley (GV) and 206 quiescent (QS) galaxies. We find that the distributions of difference between gas and star position angles for galaxies have three local peaks at $\sim0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$. The fraction of misaligned galaxies peaks at $\log(M_*/M_{\odot})\sim10.5$ and declines to both low and high mass end. This fraction decreases monotonically with increasing SFR and sSFR. We compare the global parameters including gas kinematic asymmetry $V_{\mathrm{asym}}$, HI detection rate and mass fraction of molecular gas, effective radius $R_e$, Sérsic index $n$ as well as spin parameter $λ_{R_e}$ between misaligned galaxies and their control samples. We find that the misaligned galaxies have lower HI detection rate and molecular gas mass fraction, smaller size, higher Sérsic index and lower spin parameters than their control samples. The SF and GV misaligned galaxies are more asymmetric in gas velocity fields than their controls. These observational evidences point to the gas accretion scenario followed by angular momentum redistribution from gas-gas collision, leading to gas inflow and central star formation for the SF and GV misaligned galaxies. We propose three possible origins of the misaligned QS galaxies: (1) external gas accretion; (2) merger; (3) GV misaligned galaxies evolve into QS galaxies.

IDSGAN: Generative Adversarial Networks for Attack Generation against Intrusion Detection

As an essential tool in security, the intrusion detection system bears the responsibility of the defense to network attacks performed by malicious traffic. Nowadays, with the help of machine learning algorithms, intrusion detection systems develop rapidly. However, the robustness of this system is questionable when it faces adversarial attacks. For the robustness of detection systems, more potential attack approaches are under research. In this paper, a framework of the generative adversarial networks, called IDSGAN, is proposed to generate the adversarial malicious traffic records aiming to attack intrusion detection systems by deceiving and evading the detection. Given that the internal structure and parameters of the detection system are unknown to attackers, the adversarial attack examples perform the black-box attacks against the detection system. IDSGAN leverages a generator to transform original malicious traffic records into adversarial malicious ones. A discriminator classifies traffic examples and dynamically learns the real-time black-box detection system. More significantly, the restricted modification mechanism is designed for the adversarial generation to preserve original attack functionalities of adversarial traffic records. The effectiveness of the model is indicated by attacking multiple algorithm-based detection models with different attack categories. The robustness is verified by changing the number of the modified features. A comparative experiment with adversarial attack baselines demonstrates the superiority of our model.

The molecular gas resolved by ALMA in the low-metallicity dwarf merging galaxy Haro 11

The physical mechanisms for starburst or quenching in less massive ($M_* < 10^{10} M_{\odot}$) galaxies are unclear. The merger is one of the inescapable processes referred to as both starburst and quenching in massive galaxies. However, the effects of the merger on star formation in dwarf galaxies and their evolution results are still uncertain. We aim to explore how to trigger and quench star formation in dwarf galaxies by studying the metal-poor gas-rich dwarf mergers based on the multi-band observations at a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 460 pc. We use the archival data of ALMA (band 3, 8) and VLT/MUSE to map CO($J=$1-0), [CI]($^3$P$_1 - ^3$P$_0$), and H$α$ emission in one of the most extreme starburst merging dwarf galaxies, Haro 11. We find the molecular gas is assembled around the central two star-forming regions. The molecular/ionized gas and stellar components show complex kinematics, indicating that the gas is probably at a combined stage of collision of clouds and feedback from star formation. The peak location and distribution of [CI](1-0) strongly resemble the CO(1-0) emission, meaning that it might trace the same molecular gas as CO in such a dwarf merger starburst galaxy. The enhancement of line ratios ($\sim 0.5$) of [CI]/CO around knot C is probably generated by the dissociation of CO molecules by cosmic rays and far-ultraviolet photons. Globally, Haro 11 and its star-forming regions share similar SFEs as the high-$z$ starburst galaxies or the clumps in nearby (U)LIRGs. Given the high SFE, sSFR, small stellar mass, low metallicity, and deficient HI gas, Haro 11 could be an analog of high-$z$ dwarf starburst and the potential progenitor of the nearby less massive elliptical galaxies. The significantly smaller turbulent pressure and viral parameter will probably trigger the intense starbursts. We also predict that it will quench at $M_* < 8.5 \times 10^9 M_{\odot}$.

Towards Build Verifiability for Java-based Systems

Build verifiability refers to the property that the build of a software system can be verified by independent third parties and it is crucial for the trustworthiness of a software system. Various efforts towards build verifiability have been made to C/C++-based systems, yet the techniques for Java-based systems are not systematic and are often specific to a particular build tool (e.g., Maven). In this study, we present a systematic approach towards build verifiability on Java-based systems. Our approach consists of three parts: a unified build process, a tool that dynamically controls non-determinism during the build process, and another tool that eliminates non-equivalences by post-processing the build artifacts. We apply our approach on 46 unverified open source projects from Reproducible Central and 13 open source projects that are widely used by Huawei commercial products. As a result, 91% of the unverified Reproducible Central projects and 100% of the commercially adopted OSS projects are successfully verified with our approach. In addition, based on our experience in analyzing thousands of builds for both commercial and open source Java-based systems, we present 14 patterns that introduce non-equivalences in generated build artifacts and their respective mitigation strategies. Among these patterns, 11 (78%) are unique for Java-based system, whereas the remaining 3 (22%) are common with C/C++-based systems. The approach and the findings of this paper are useful for both practitioners and researchers who are interested in build verifiability.

SDSS-IV MaNGA : spatial resolved properties of kinematically misaligned galaxies

We select 456 galaxies with kinematically misaligned gas and stellar components from 9546 parent galaxies in MaNGA, and classify them into 72 star-forming galaxies, 142 green-valley galaxies and 242 quiescent galaxies. Comparing the spatial resolved properties of the misaligned galaxies with control samples closely match in the D$_n$4000 and stellar velocity dispersion, we find that: (1) the misaligned galaxies have lower values in $V_{\rm gas}/σ_{\rm gas}$ and $V_{\rm star}/σ_{\rm star}$ (the ratio between ordered to random motion of gas and stellar components) across the entire galaxies than their control samples; (2) the star-forming and green-valley misaligned galaxies have enhanced central concentrated star formation than their control galaxies. The difference in stellar population between quiescent misaligned galaxies and control samples is small; (3) gas-phase metallicity of the green valley and quiescent misaligned galaxies are lower than the control samples. For the star forming misaligned galaxies, the difference in metallicity between the misaligned galaxies and their control samples strongly depends on how we select the control samples. All these observational results suggest external gas accretion influences the evolution of star forming and green valley galaxies, not only in kinematics/morphologies, but also in stellar populations. However, the quiescent misaligned galaxies have survived from different formation mechanisms.

Different Formation Scenarios of Counter-rotating Stellar Disks in Nearby Galaxies

Using the integral field unit (IFU) data from Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, we select a sample of 101 galaxies with counter-rotating stellar disks and regularly-rotating ionized gas disk. We classify the 101 galaxies into four types based on the features of their stellar velocity fields. The relative fractions and stellar population age radial gradients of the four types are different in blue cloud (BC), green valley (GV) and red sequence (RS) populations. We suggest different formation scenarios for the counter-rotating stellar disks, and the key factors in the formation of counter-rotating stellar disks include: (1) the abundance of pre-existing gas in progenitor, (2) the efficiency in angular momentum consumption.

Towards Training Reproducible Deep Learning Models

Reproducibility is an increasing concern in Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly in the area of Deep Learning (DL). Being able to reproduce DL models is crucial for AI-based systems, as it is closely tied to various tasks like training, testing, debugging, and auditing. However, DL models are challenging to be reproduced due to issues like randomness in the software (e.g., DL algorithms) and non-determinism in the hardware (e.g., GPU). There are various practices to mitigate some of the aforementioned issues. However, many of them are either too intrusive or can only work for a specific usage context. In this paper, we propose a systematic approach to training reproducible DL models. Our approach includes three main parts: (1) a set of general criteria to thoroughly evaluate the reproducibility of DL models for two different domains, (2) a unified framework which leverages a record-and-replay technique to mitigate software-related randomness and a profile-and-patch technique to control hardware-related non-determinism, and (3) a reproducibility guideline which explains the rationales and the mitigation strategies on conducting a reproducible training process for DL models. Case study results show our approach can successfully reproduce six open source and one commercial DL models.

Asymmetric star formation triggered by gas inflow in a barred lenticular galaxy PGC 34107

Comparing to the inactive and gas-poor normal lenticular galaxies (S0s) in the local universe, we study a barred star-forming S0 galaxy, PGC 34107, which has been observed by the Centro Astronómico Hispano Alemán (CAHA) 3.5-m telescope and the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA). The spatially resolved ionized gas and molecular gas traced by $^{12}$CO(1-0), hereafter CO(1-0), show the similar distribution and kinematics to the stellar component with an off-center star-forming region, $\sim$380 pc away from the center. The resolved kinematics of molecular CO(1-0) emission reveals that there is a blueshifted (redshifted) velocity component on the receding (approaching) side of the galaxy along the stellar bar. This might provide a plausible evidence of non-circular motion, such as the bar-induced molecular gas inflow. The velocity of molecular gas inflow decreases with approaching towards the peak of the off-center star formation in the north, which might be associated with the inner Lindblad resonance (ILR). In addition to CO(1-0), we also detect the isotopic line of $^{13}$CO(1-0). Most $\rm Hα$, CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0) emissions are concentrated on this northern star-forming region. We find that PGC 34107 follows the local stellar mass-metallicity relation, star-forming main sequence, and the Kennicutt-Schmidt law. The resolved and integrated molecular gas main sequence suggest that there is a higher gas fraction in the galaxy central region, which supports a scenario that the bar-induced gas reservoir provides the raw material, and subsequently triggers the central star formation.

Systematic biases in determining dust attenuation curves through galaxy SED fitting

While the slope of the dust attenuation curve ($δ$) is found to correlate with effective dust attenuation ($A_V$) as obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, it remains unknown how the fitting degeneracies shape this relation. We examine the degeneracy effects by fitting SEDs of a sample of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, in conjunction with mock galaxy SEDs of known attenuation parameters. A well-designed declining starburst star formation history is adopted to generate model SED templates with intrinsic UV slope ($β_0$) spanning over a reasonably wide range. The best-fitting $β_0$ for our sample SFGs shows a wide coverage, dramatically differing from the limited range of $β_0<-2.2$ for a starburst of constant star formation. Our results show that strong degeneracies between $β_0$, $δ$, and $A_V$ in the SED fitting induce systematic biases leading to a false $A_V$--$δ$ correlation. Our simulation tests reveal that this relationship can be well reproduced even when a flat $A_V$--$δ$ relation is taken to build the input model galaxy SEDs. The variations in best-fitting $δ$ are dominated by the fitting errors. We show that assuming a starburst with constant star formation in SED fitting will result in a steeper attenuation curve, smaller degeneracy errors, and a stronger $A_V$--$δ$ relation. Our findings confirm that the $A_V$--$δ$ relation obtained through SED fitting is likely driven by the systematic biases induced by the fitting degeneracies between $β_0$, $δ$, and $A_V$.

Velocity Discretization for Lattice Boltzmann Method for Noncontinuum Bounded Gas Flows at the Micro and Nanoscale

The lattice Boltzmann (LB) method intrinsically links to the Boltzmann equation with the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision operator; however, it has been questioned to be able to simulate noncontinuum bounded gas flows at the micro and nanoscale, where gas moves at a low speed but has a large Knudsen number. In this article, this point has been verified by simulating Couette flows at moderate and large Knudsen numbers (e.g., Kn=10 and Kn=100) by the linearized LB models based on the popular half-space Gaussian Hermite (HGH) quadrature. The underlying cause for poor accuracy of these conventional models is analyzed in light of numerical evaluation of the involved Abramowitz functions. A different thought on velocity discretization is then proposed using Gauss Legendre (LG) quadrature. Strikingly, the resulting GL-based LB models have achieved high accuracy in simulating Couette flows in the strong transition and even free molecular flow regimes. The numerical study in this article reveals an essentially different while workable way in constructing LB models for simulating micro and nanoscale low-speed gas flows with strong noncontinuum effects.

Latent Network Embedding via Adversarial Auto-encoders

Graph auto-encoders have proved to be useful in network embedding task. However, current models only consider explicit structures and fail to explore the informative latent structures cohered in networks. To address this issue, we propose a latent network embedding model based on adversarial graph auto-encoders. Under this framework, the problem of discovering latent structures is formulated as inferring the latent ties from partial observations. A latent transmission matrix that describes the strengths of existing edges and latent ties is derived based on influence cascades sampled by simulating diffusion processes over networks. Besides, since the inference process may bring extra noises, we introduce an adversarial training that works as regularization to dislodge noises and improve the model robustness. Extensive experiments on link prediction and node classification tasks show that the proposed model achieves superior results compared with baseline models.
