Extended black hole thermodynamics from extended Iyer-Wald formalism

In recent years, there has been significant interest in the field of extended black hole thermodynamics, where the cosmological constant and/or other coupling parameters are treated as thermodynamic variables. Drawing inspiration from the Iyer-Wald formalism, which reveals the intrinsic and universal structure of conventional black hole thermodynamics, we illustrate that a proper extension of this formalism also unveils the underlying theoretical structure of extended black hole thermodynamics. As a remarkable consequence, for any gravitational theory described by a diffeomorphism invariant action, it is always possible to construct a consistent extended thermodynamics using this extended formalism.

Towards Net-Zero Carbon Emissions in Network AI for 6G and Beyond

A global effort has been initiated to reduce the worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, primarily carbon emissions, by half by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. The development of 6G must also be compliant with this goal. Unfortunately, developing a sustainable and net-zero emission systems to meet the users' fast growing demands on mobile services, especially smart services and applications, may be much more challenging than expected. Particularly, despite the energy efficiency improvement in both hardware and software designs, the overall energy consumption and carbon emission of mobile networks are still increasing at a tremendous speed. The growing penetration of resource-demanding AI algorithms and solutions further exacerbate this challenge. In this article, we identify the major emission sources and introduce an evaluation framework for analyzing the lifecycle of network AI implementations. A novel joint dynamic energy trading and task allocation optimization framework, called DETA, has been introduced to reduce the overall carbon emissions. We consider a federated edge intelligence-based network AI system as a case study to verify the effectiveness of our proposed solution. Experimental results based on a hardware prototype suggest that our proposed solution can reduce carbon emissions of network AI systems by up to 74.9%. Finally, open problems and future directions are discussed.

Reasoning over the Air: A Reasoning-based Implicit Semantic-Aware Communication Framework

Semantic-aware communication is a novel paradigm that draws inspiration from human communication focusing on the delivery of the meaning of messages. It has attracted significant interest recently due to its potential to improve the efficiency and reliability of communication and enhance users' QoE. Most existing works focus on transmitting and delivering the explicit semantic meaning that can be directly identified from the source signal. This paper investigates the implicit semantic-aware communication in which the hidden information that cannot be directly observed from the source signal must be recognized and interpreted by the intended users. To this end, a novel implicit semantic-aware communication (iSAC) architecture is proposed for representing, communicating, and interpreting the implicit semantic meaning between source and destination users. A projection-based semantic encoder is proposed to convert the high-dimensional graphical representation of explicit semantics into a low-dimensional semantic constellation space for efficient physical channel transmission. To enable the destination user to learn and imitate the implicit semantic reasoning process of source user, a generative adversarial imitation learning-based solution, called G-RML, is proposed. Different from existing communication solutions, the source user in G-RML does not focus only on sending as much of the useful messages as possible; but, instead, it tries to guide the destination user to learn a reasoning mechanism to map any observed explicit semantics to the corresponding implicit semantics that are most relevant to the semantic meaning. Compared to the existing solutions, our proposed G-RML requires much less communication and computational resources and scales well to the scenarios involving the communication of rich semantic meanings consisting of a large number of concepts and relations.

Information Energy Ratio of XOR Logic Gate at Mesoscopic Scale

As the size of transistors approaches the mesoscopic scale, existing energy consumption analysis methods exhibit various limits, especially when being applied to describe the non-equilibrium information processing of transistors at ultra-low voltages. The stochastic thermodynamics offers a theoretic tool to analyze the energy consumption of transistor during the non-equilibrium information processing. Based on this theory, an information energy ratio of XOR gate composed of single-electron transistors is proposed at the mesoscopic scale, which can be used to quantify the exchange between the information and energy at XOR gates. Furthermore, the energy efficiency of the parity check circuit is proposed to analyze the energy consumption of digital signal processing systems. Compared with the energy efficiency of parity check circuit adopting the 7 nm semiconductor process supply voltage, simulation results show that the energy efficiency of the parity check circuit is improved by 266% when the supply voltage is chosen at a specified value.

MetaShard: A Novel Sharding Blockchain Platform for Metaverse Applications

Due to its security, transparency, and flexibility in verifying virtual assets, blockchain has been identified as one of the key technologies for Metaverse. Unfortunately, blockchain-based Metaverse faces serious challenges such as massive resource demands, scalability, and security concerns. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel sharding-based blockchain framework, namely MetaShard, for Metaverse applications. Particularly, we first develop an effective consensus mechanism, namely Proof-of-Engagement, that can incentivize MUs' data and computing resource contribution. Moreover, to improve the scalability of MetaShard, we propose an innovative sharding management scheme to maximize the network's throughput while protecting the shards from 51% attacks. Since the optimization problem is NP-complete, we develop a hybrid approach that decomposes the problem (using the binary search method) into sub-problems that can be solved effectively by the Lagrangian method. As a result, the proposed approach can obtain solutions in polynomial time, thereby enabling flexible shard reconfiguration and reducing the risk of corruption from the adversary. Extensive numerical experiments show that, compared to the state-of-the-art commercial solvers, our proposed approach can achieve up to 66.6% higher throughput in less than 1/30 running time. Moreover, the proposed approach can achieve global optimal solutions in most experiments.

Causal Semantic Communication for Digital Twins: A Generalizable Imitation Learning Approach

A digital twin (DT) leverages a virtual representation of the physical world, along with communication (e.g., 6G), computing (e.g., edge computing), and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enable many connected intelligence services. In order to handle the large amounts of network data based on digital twins (DTs), wireless systems can exploit the paradigm of semantic communication (SC) for facilitating informed decision-making under strict communication constraints by utilizing AI techniques such as causal reasoning. In this paper, a novel framework called causal semantic communication (CSC) is proposed for DT-based wireless systems. The CSC system is posed as an imitation learning (IL) problem, where the transmitter, with access to optimal network control policies using a DT, teaches the receiver using SC over a bandwidth limited wireless channel how to improve its knowledge to perform optimal control actions. The causal structure in the source data is extracted using novel approaches from the framework of deep end-to-end causal inference, thereby enabling the creation of a semantic representation that is causally invariant, which in turn helps generalize the learned knowledge of the system to unseen scenarios. The CSC decoder at the receiver is designed to extract and estimate semantic information while ensuring high semantic reliability. The receiver control policies, semantic decoder, and causal inference are formulated as a bi-level optimization problem within a variational inference framework. This problem is solved using a novel concept called network state models, inspired from world models in generative AI, that faithfully represents the environment dynamics leading to data generation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CSC system outperforms state-of-the-art SC systems by achieving better semantic reliability and reduced semantic representation.

Mathematical Characterization of Signal Semantics and Rethinking of the Mathematical Theory of Information

Shannon information theory is established based on probability and bits, and the communication technology based on this theory realizes the information age. The original goal of Shannon's information theory is to describe and transmit information content. However, due to information is related to cognition, and cognition is considered to be subjective, Shannon information theory is to describe and transmit information-bearing signals. With the development of the information age to the intelligent age, the traditional signal-oriented processing needs to be upgraded to content-oriented processing. For example, chat generative pre-trained transformer (ChatGPT) has initially realized the content processing capability based on massive data. For many years, researchers have been searching for the answer to what the information content in the signal is, because only when the information content is mathematically and accurately described can information-based machines be truly intelligent. This paper starts from rethinking the essence of the basic concepts of the information, such as semantics, meaning, information and knowledge, presents the mathematical characterization of the information content, investigate the relationship between them, studies the transformation from Shannon's signal information theory to semantic information theory, and therefore proposes a content-oriented semantic communication framework. Furthermore, we propose semantic decomposition and composition scheme to achieve conversion between complex and simple semantics. Finally, we verify the proposed characterization of information-related concepts by implementing evolvable knowledge-based semantic recognition.

Distributed Traffic Synthesis and Classification in Edge Networks: A Federated Self-supervised Learning Approach

With the rising demand for wireless services and increased awareness of the need for data protection, existing network traffic analysis and management architectures are facing unprecedented challenges in classifying and synthesizing the increasingly diverse services and applications. This paper proposes FS-GAN, a federated self-supervised learning framework to support automatic traffic analysis and synthesis over a large number of heterogeneous datasets. FS-GAN is composed of multiple distributed Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), with a set of generators, each being designed to generate synthesized data samples following the distribution of an individual service traffic, and each discriminator being trained to differentiate the synthesized data samples and the real data samples of a local dataset. A federated learning-based framework is adopted to coordinate local model training processes of different GANs across different datasets. FS-GAN can classify data of unknown types of service and create synthetic samples that capture the traffic distribution of the unknown types. We prove that FS-GAN can minimize the Jensen-Shannon Divergence (JSD) between the distribution of real data across all the datasets and that of the synthesized data samples. FS-GAN also maximizes the JSD among the distributions of data samples created by different generators, resulting in each generator producing synthetic data samples that follow the same distribution as one particular service type. Extensive simulation results show that the classification accuracy of FS-GAN achieves over 20% improvement in average compared to the state-of-the-art clustering-based traffic analysis algorithms. FS-GAN also has the capability to synthesize highly complex mixtures of traffic types without requiring any human-labeled data samples.

Adversarial Learning for Implicit Semantic-Aware Communications

Semantic communication is a novel communication paradigm that focuses on recognizing and delivering the desired meaning of messages to the destination users. Most existing works in this area focus on delivering explicit semantics, labels or signal features that can be directly identified from the source signals. In this paper, we consider the implicit semantic communication problem in which hidden relations and closely related semantic terms that cannot be recognized from the source signals need to also be delivered to the destination user. We develop a novel adversarial learning-based implicit semantic-aware communication (iSAC) architecture in which the source user, instead of maximizing the total amount of information transmitted to the channel, aims to help the recipient learn an inference rule that can automatically generate implicit semantics based on limited clue information. We prove that by applying iSAC, the destination user can always learn an inference rule that matches the true inference rule of the source messages. Experimental results show that the proposed iSAC can offer up to a 19.69 dB improvement over existing non-inferential communication solutions, in terms of symbol error rate at the destination user.

Time-sensitive Learning for Heterogeneous Federated Edge Intelligence

Real-time machine learning has recently attracted significant interest due to its potential to support instantaneous learning, adaptation, and decision making in a wide range of application domains, including self-driving vehicles, intelligent transportation, and industry automation. We investigate real-time ML in a federated edge intelligence (FEI) system, an edge computing system that implements federated learning (FL) solutions based on data samples collected and uploaded from decentralized data networks. FEI systems often exhibit heterogenous communication and computational resource distribution, as well as non-i.i.d. data samples, resulting in long model training time and inefficient resource utilization. Motivated by this fact, we propose a time-sensitive federated learning (TS-FL) framework to minimize the overall run-time for collaboratively training a shared ML model. Training acceleration solutions for both TS-FL with synchronous coordination (TS-FL-SC) and asynchronous coordination (TS-FL-ASC) are investigated. To address straggler effect in TS-FL-SC, we develop an analytical solution to characterize the impact of selecting different subsets of edge servers on the overall model training time. A server dropping-based solution is proposed to allow slow-performance edge servers to be removed from participating in model training if their impact on the resulting model accuracy is limited. A joint optimization algorithm is proposed to minimize the overall time consumption of model training by selecting participating edge servers, local epoch number. We develop an analytical expression to characterize the impact of staleness effect of asynchronous coordination and straggler effect of FL on the time consumption of TS-FL-ASC. Experimental results show that TS-FL-SC and TS-FL-ASC can provide up to 63% and 28% of reduction, in the overall model training time, respectively.

Imitation Learning-based Implicit Semantic-aware Communication Networks: Multi-layer Representation and Collaborative Reasoning

Semantic communication has recently attracted significant interest from both industry and academia due to its potential to transform the existing data-focused communication architecture towards a more generally intelligent and goal-oriented semantic-aware networking system. Despite its promising potential, semantic communications and semantic-aware networking are still at their infancy. Most existing works focus on transporting and delivering the explicit semantic information, e.g., labels or features of objects, that can be directly identified from the source signal. The original definition of semantics as well as recent results in cognitive neuroscience suggest that it is the implicit semantic information, in particular the hidden relations connecting different concepts and feature items that plays the fundamental role in recognizing, communicating, and delivering the real semantic meanings of messages. Motivated by this observation, we propose a novel reasoning-based implicit semantic-aware communication network architecture that allows multiple tiers of CDC and edge servers to collaborate and support efficient semantic encoding, decoding, and interpretation for end-users. We introduce a new multi-layer representation of semantic information taking into consideration both the hierarchical structure of implicit semantics as well as the personalized inference preference of individual users. We model the semantic reasoning process as a reinforcement learning process and then propose an imitation-based semantic reasoning mechanism learning (iRML) solution for the edge servers to leaning a reasoning policy that imitates the inference behavior of the source user. A federated GCN-based collaborative reasoning solution is proposed to allow multiple edge servers to jointly construct a shared semantic interpretation model based on decentralized knowledge datasets.

On the first order corrections to the black hole thermodynamics in higher curvature theories of gravity

In modified theories of gravity, higher curvature terms may be added to the Einstein-Hilbert action. Conventionally, the effects of the higher curvature terms on the black hole thermodynamics are rather difficult to obtain. In this paper, we show that, at least at the first order level, the corrections to the thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild black hole can be easily obtained, without solving the modified black hole metric. We examine some specific examples, which produces the known results in the literature, as well as those previously unknown. Furthermore, we find some nonperturbative exact results by generalizing the first-order analysis. In particular, a novel relation between the Euclidean integrals of the Einstein--Hilbert term and the higher curvature terms is found and proved.

Rate-Distortion Theory for Strategic Semantic Communication

This paper analyzes the fundamental limit of the strategic semantic communication problem in which a transmitter obtains a limited number of indirect observation of an intrinsic semantic information source and can then influence the receiver's decoding by sending a limited number of messages to an imperfect channel. The transmitter and the receiver can have different distortion measures and can make rational decision about their encoding and decoding strategies, respectively. The decoder can also have some side information (e.g., background knowledge and/or information obtained from previous communications) about the semantic source to assist its interpretation of the semantic information. We focus particularly on the case that the transmitter can commit to an encoding strategy and study the impact of the strategic decision making on the rate distortion of semantic communication. Three equilibrium solutions including the strong Stackelberg equilibrium, weak Stackelberg equilibrium, as well as Nash equilibrium have been studied and compared. The optimal encoding and decoding strategy profiles under various equilibrium solutions have been derived. We prove that committing to an encoding strategy cannot always bring benefit to the encoder. We therefore propose a feasible condition under which committing to an encoding strategy can always reduce the distortion performance of semantic communication.

Adaptive Bit Rate Control in Semantic Communication with Incremental Knowledge-based HARQ

Semantic communication has witnessed a great progress with the development of natural language processing (NLP) and deep learning (DL). Although existing semantic communication technologies can effectively reduce errors in semantic interpretation, most of these solutions adopt a fixed bit length structure, along with a rigid transmission scheme, which is inefficient and lacks scalability when faced with different meanings and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. In this paper, we explore the impact of adaptive bit lengths on semantic coding (SC) under various channel conditions. First, we propose progressive semantic hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) schemes that utilize incremental knowledge (IK) to simultaneously reduce the communication cost and semantic error. On top of this, we design a novel semantic encoding solution with multi-bit length selection. In this fashion, the transmitter employs a policy network to decide the appropriate coding rate, so as to secure the correct information delivery at the cost of minimal bits. Moreover, a specific denoiser is further introduced to reduce the semantic errors encountered in the transmission process according to the semantic characteristics of context. Extensive simulation results have been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Reasoning on the Air: An Implicit Semantic Communication Architecture

Semantic communication is a novel communication paradigm which draws inspiration from human communication focusing on the delivery of the meaning of a message to the intended users. It has attracted significant interest recently due to its potential to improve efficiency and reliability of communication, enhance users' quality-of-experience (QoE), and achieve smoother cross-protocol/domain communication. Most existing works in semantic communication focus on identifying and transmitting explicit semantic meaning, e.g., labels of objects, that can be directly identified from the source signal. This paper investigates implicit semantic communication in which the hidden information, e.g., implicit causality and reasoning mechanisms of users, that cannot be directly observed from the source signal needs to be transported and delivered to the intended users. We propose a novel implicit semantic communication (iSC) architecture for representing, communicating, and interpreting the implicit semantic meaning. In particular, we first propose a graph-inspired structure to represent implicit meaning of message based on three key components: entity, relation, and reasoning mechanism. We then propose a generative adversarial imitation learning-based reasoning mechanism learning (GAML) solution for the destination user to learn and imitate the reasoning process of the source user. We prove that, by applying GAML, the destination user can accurately imitate the reasoning process of the users to generate reasoning paths that follow the same probability distribution as the expert paths. Numerical results suggest that our proposed architecture can achieve accurate implicit meaning interpretation at the destination user.

Life-long Learning for Reasoning-based Semantic Communication

Semantic communication is an emerging paradigm that focuses on understanding and delivering semantics, or meaning of messages. Most existing semantic communication solutions define semantic meaning as the meaning of object labels recognized from a source signal, while ignoring intrinsic information that cannot be directly observed. Moreover, existing solutions often assume the recognizable semantic meanings are limited by a pre-defined label database. In this paper, we propose a novel reasoning-based semantic communication architecture in which the semantic meaning is represented by a graph-based knowledge structure in terms of object-entity, relationships, and reasoning rules. An embedding-based semantic interpretation framework is proposed to convert the high-dimensional graph-based representation of semantic meaning into a low-dimensional representation, which is efficient for channel transmission. We develop a novel inference function-based approach that can automatically infer hidden information such as missing entities and relations that cannot be directly observed from the message. Finally, we introduce a life-long model updating approach in which the receiver can learn from previously received messages and automatically update the reasoning rules of users when new unknown semantic entities and relations have been discovered. Extensive experiments are conducted based on a real-world knowledge database and numerical results show that our proposed solution achieves 76% interpretation accuracy of semantic meaning at the receiver, notably when some entities are missing in the transmitted message.

Logarithmic correction to black hole entropy from the nonlocality of quantum gravity

It has been known for many years that the leading correction to the black hole entropy is a logarithmic term, which is universal and closely related to conformal anomaly. A fully consistent analysis of this issue has to take quantum backreactions to the black hole geometry into account. However, it was always unclear how to naturally derive the modified black hole metric especially from an effective action, because the problem refers to the elusive non-locality of quantum gravity. In this paper, we show that this problem can be resolved within an effective field theory (EFT) framework of quantum gravity. Our work suggests that the EFT approach provides a powerful and self-consistent tool for studying the quantum gravitational corrections to black hole geometries and thermodynamics.

AdaptiveFog: A Modelling and Optimization Framework for Fog Computing in Intelligent Transportation Systems

Fog computing has been advocated as an enabling technology for computationally intensive services in smart connected vehicles. Most existing works focus on analyzing the queueing and workload processing latencies associated with fog computing, ignoring the fact that wireless access latency can sometimes dominate the overall latency. This motivates the work in this paper, where we report on a five-month measurement study of the wireless access latency between connected vehicles and a fog/cloud computing system supported by commercially available LTE networks. We propose AdaptiveFog, a novel framework for autonomous and dynamic switching between different LTE networks that implement a fog/cloud infrastructure. AdaptiveFog's main objective is to maximize the service confidence level, defined as the probability that the latency of a given service type is below some threshold. To quantify the performance gap between different LTE networks, we introduce a novel statistical distance metric, called weighted Kantorovich-Rubinstein (K-R) distance. Two scenarios based on finite- and infinite-horizon optimization of short-term and long-term confidence are investigated. For each scenario, a simple threshold policy based on weighted K-R distance is proposed and proved to maximize the latency confidence for smart vehicles. Extensive analysis and simulations are performed based on our latency measurements. Our results show that AdaptiveFog achieves around 30% to 50% improvement in the confidence levels of fog and cloud latencies, respectively.
