Magnetic-field-induced robust zero Hall plateau state in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Chern insulator

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides an ideal platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena. Recently, the Chern insulator and axion insulator phases have been realized in few-layer MnBi2Te4 devices at low magnetic field regime. However, the fate of MnBi2Te4 in high magnetic field has never been explored in experiment. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61.5 T. In the high-field limit, the Chern insulator phase with Chern number C = -1 evolves into a robust zero Hall resistance plateau state. Nonlocal transport measurements and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the charge transport in the zero Hall plateau state is conducted by two counter-propagating edge states that arise from the combined effects of Landau levels and large Zeeman effect in strong magnetic fields. Our result demonstrates the intricate interplay among intrinsic magnetic order, external magnetic field, and nontrivial band topology in MnBi2Te4.

Magnetization-tuned topological quantum phase transition in MnBi2Te4 devices

Recently, the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 has attracted enormous research interest due to the great success in realizing exotic topological quantum states, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), axion insulator state, high-Chern-number and high-temperature Chern insulator states. One key issue in this field is to effectively manipulate these states and control topological phase transitions. Here, by systematic angle-dependent transport measurements, we reveal a magnetization-tuned topological quantum phase transition from Chern insulator to magnetic insulator with gapped Dirac surface states in MnBi2Te4 devices. Specifically, as the magnetic field is tilted away from the out-of-plane direction by around 40-60 degrees, the Hall resistance deviates from the quantization value and a colossal, anisotropic magnetoresistance is detected. The theoretical analyses based on modified Landauer-Buttiker formalism show that the field-tilt-driven switching from ferromagnetic state to canted antiferromagnetic state induces a topological quantum phase transition from Chern insulator to magnetic insulator with gapped Dirac surface states in MnBi2Te4 devices. Our work provides an efficient means for modulating topological quantum states and topological quantum phase transitions.

Multi-Contrast MRI Super-Resolution via a Multi-Stage Integration Network

Super-resolution (SR) plays a crucial role in improving the image quality of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI produces multi-contrast images and can provide a clear display of soft tissues. However, current super-resolution methods only employ a single contrast, or use a simple multi-contrast fusion mechanism, ignoring the rich relations among different contrasts, which are valuable for improving SR. In this work, we propose a multi-stage integration network (i.e., MINet) for multi-contrast MRI SR, which explicitly models the dependencies between multi-contrast images at different stages to guide image SR. In particular, our MINet first learns a hierarchical feature representation from multiple convolutional stages for each of different-contrast image. Subsequently, we introduce a multi-stage integration module to mine the comprehensive relations between the representations of the multi-contrast images. Specifically, the module matches each representation with all other features, which are integrated in terms of their similarities to obtain an enriched representation. Extensive experiments on fastMRI and real-world clinical datasets demonstrate that 1) our MINet outperforms state-of-the-art multi-contrast SR methods in terms of various metrics and 2) our multi-stage integration module is able to excavate complex interactions among multi-contrast features at different stages, leading to improved target-image quality.

MultiFace: A Generic Training Mechanism for Boosting Face Recognition Performance

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) and their variants have been widely used in large scale face recognition(FR) recently. Existing methods have achieved good performance on many FR benchmarks. However, most of them suffer from two major problems. First, these methods converge quite slowly since they optimize the loss functions in a high-dimensional and sparse Gaussian Sphere. Second, the high dimensionality of features, despite the powerful descriptive ability, brings difficulty to the optimization, which may lead to a sub-optimal local optimum. To address these problems, we propose a simple yet efficient training mechanism called MultiFace, where we approximate the original high-dimensional features by the ensemble of low-dimensional features. The proposed mechanism is also generic and can be easily applied to many advanced FR models. Moreover, it brings the benefits of good interpretability to FR models via the clustering effect. In detail, the ensemble of these low-dimensional features can capture complementary yet discriminative information, which can increase the intra-class compactness and inter-class separability. Experimental results show that the proposed mechanism can accelerate 2-3 times with the softmax loss and 1.2-1.5 times with Arcface or Cosface, while achieving state-of-the-art performances in several benchmark datasets. Especially, the significant improvements on large-scale datasets(e.g., IJB and MageFace) demonstrate the flexibility of our new training mechanism.

DONet: Dual-Octave Network for Fast MR Image Reconstruction

Magnetic resonance (MR) image acquisition is an inherently prolonged process, whose acceleration has long been the subject of research. This is commonly achieved by obtaining multiple undersampled images, simultaneously, through parallel imaging. In this paper, we propose the Dual-Octave Network (DONet), which is capable of learning multi-scale spatial-frequency features from both the real and imaginary components of MR data, for fast parallel MR image reconstruction. More specifically, our DONet consists of a series of Dual-Octave convolutions (Dual-OctConv), which are connected in a dense manner for better reuse of features. In each Dual-OctConv, the input feature maps and convolutional kernels are first split into two components (ie, real and imaginary), and then divided into four groups according to their spatial frequencies. Then, our Dual-OctConv conducts intra-group information updating and inter-group information exchange to aggregate the contextual information across different groups. Our framework provides three appealing benefits: (i) It encourages information interaction and fusion between the real and imaginary components at various spatial frequencies to achieve richer representational capacity. (ii) The dense connections between the real and imaginary groups in each Dual-OctConv make the propagation of features more efficient by feature reuse. (iii) DONet enlarges the receptive field by learning multiple spatial-frequency features of both the real and imaginary components. Extensive experiments on two popular datasets (ie, clinical knee and fastMRI), under different undersampling patterns and acceleration factors, demonstrate the superiority of our model in accelerated parallel MR image reconstruction.

Ubiquitous topological states of phonons in solids: Silicon as a model material

Research on topological physics of phonons has attracted enormous interest but demands appropriate model materials. Our {\it ab initio} calculations identify silicon as an ideal candidate material containing extraordinarily rich topological phonon states. In silicon, we identify various topological nodal lines protected by glide mirror or mirror symmetries and characterized by quantized Berry phase $π$, which gives drumhead surface states observable from any surface orientations. Remarkably, a novel type of topological nexus phonon is discovered, which is featured by double Fermi-arc-like surface states and distinguished from Weyl phonons by requiring neither inversion nor time-reversal symmetry breaking. Versatile topological states can be created from the nexus phonons, such as Hopf nodal link by strain. Furthermore, we generalize the symmetry analysis to other centrosymmetric systems and find numerous candidate materials, demonstrating the ubiquitous existence of topological phonons in solids. These findings open up new opportunities for studying topological phonons in realistic materials and their influence on surface physics.

Structural Disorder Induced Second-order Topological Insulators in Three Dimensions

Higher-order topological insulators are established as topological crystalline insulators protected by crystalline symmetries. One celebrated example is the second-order topological insulator in three dimensions that hosts chiral hinge modes protected by crystalline symmetries. Since amorphous solids are ubiquitous, it is important to ask whether such a second-order topological insulator can exist in an amorphous system without any spatial order. Here we predict the existence of a secondorder topological insulating phase in an amorphous system without any crystalline symmetry. Such a topological phase manifests in the winding number of the quadrupole moment, the quantized longitudinal conductance and the hinge states. Furthermore, in stark contrast to the viewpoint that structural disorder should be detrimental to the higher-order topological phase, we remarkably find that structural disorder can induce a second-order topological insulator from a topologically trivial phase in a regular geometry. We finally demonstrate the existence of a second-order topological phase in amorphous systems with time-reversal symmetry.

MIMO Self-attentive RNN Beamformer for Multi-speaker Speech Separation

Recently, our proposed recurrent neural network (RNN) based all deep learning minimum variance distortionless response (ADL-MVDR) beamformer method yielded superior performance over the conventional MVDR by replacing the matrix inversion and eigenvalue decomposition with two recurrent neural networks. In this work, we present a self-attentive RNN beamformer to further improve our previous RNN-based beamformer by leveraging on the powerful modeling capability of self-attention. Temporal-spatial self-attention module is proposed to better learn the beamforming weights from the speech and noise spatial covariance matrices. The temporal self-attention module could help RNN to learn global statistics of covariance matrices. The spatial self-attention module is designed to attend on the cross-channel correlation in the covariance matrices. Furthermore, a multi-channel input with multi-speaker directional features and multi-speaker speech separation outputs (MIMO) model is developed to improve the inference efficiency. The evaluations demonstrate that our proposed MIMO self-attentive RNN beamformer improves both the automatic speech recognition (ASR) accuracy and the perceptual estimation of speech quality (PESQ) against prior arts.

Dual-Octave Convolution for Accelerated Parallel MR Image Reconstruction

Magnetic resonance (MR) image acquisition is an inherently prolonged process, whose acceleration by obtaining multiple undersampled images simultaneously through parallel imaging has always been the subject of research. In this paper, we propose the Dual-Octave Convolution (Dual-OctConv), which is capable of learning multi-scale spatial-frequency features from both real and imaginary components, for fast parallel MR image reconstruction. By reformulating the complex operations using octave convolutions, our model shows a strong ability to capture richer representations of MR images, while at the same time greatly reducing the spatial redundancy. More specifically, the input feature maps and convolutional kernels are first split into two components (i.e., real and imaginary), which are then divided into four groups according to their spatial frequencies. Then, our Dual-OctConv conducts intra-group information updating and inter-group information exchange to aggregate the contextual information across different groups. Our framework provides two appealing benefits: (i) it encourages interactions between real and imaginary components at various spatial frequencies to achieve richer representational capacity, and (ii) it enlarges the receptive field by learning multiple spatial-frequency features of both the real and imaginary components. We evaluate the performance of the proposed model on the acceleration of multi-coil MR image reconstruction. Extensive experiments are conducted on an {in vivo} knee dataset under different undersampling patterns and acceleration factors. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our model in accelerated parallel MR image reconstruction. Our code is available at: github.com/chunmeifeng/Dual-OctConv.

Generalized Spatio-Temporal RNN Beamformer for Target Speech Separation

Although the conventional mask-based minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) could reduce the non-linear distortion, the residual noise level of the MVDR separated speech is still high. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal recurrent neural network based beamformer (RNN-BF) for target speech separation. This new beamforming framework directly learns the beamforming weights from the estimated speech and noise spatial covariance matrices. Leveraging on the temporal modeling capability of RNNs, the RNN-BF could automatically accumulate the statistics of the speech and noise covariance matrices to learn the frame-level beamforming weights in a recursive way. An RNN-based generalized eigenvalue (RNN-GEV) beamformer and a more generalized RNN beamformer (GRNN-BF) are proposed. We further improve the RNN-GEV and the GRNN-BF by using layer normalization to replace the commonly used mask normalization on the covariance matrices. The proposed GRNN-BF obtains better performance against prior arts in terms of speech quality (PESQ), speech-to-noise ratio (SNR) and word error rate (WER).

MetricNet: Towards Improved Modeling For Non-Intrusive Speech Quality Assessment

The objective speech quality assessment is usually conducted by comparing received speech signal with its clean reference, while human beings are capable of evaluating the speech quality without any reference, such as in the mean opinion score (MOS) tests. Non-intrusive speech quality assessment has attracted much attention recently due to the lack of access to clean reference signals for objective evaluations in real scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel non-intrusive speech quality measurement model, MetricNet, which leverages label distribution learning and joint speech reconstruction learning to achieve significantly improved performance compared to the existing non-intrusive speech quality measurement models. We demonstrate that the proposed approach yields promisingly high correlation to the intrusive objective evaluation of speech quality on clean, noisy and processed speech data.

Asymmetric CNN for image super-resolution

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely applied for low-level vision over the past five years. According to nature of different applications, designing appropriate CNN architectures is developed. However, customized architectures gather different features via treating all pixel points as equal to improve the performance of given application, which ignores the effects of local power pixel points and results in low training efficiency. In this paper, we propose an asymmetric CNN (ACNet) comprising an asymmetric block (AB), a memory enhancement block (MEB) and a high-frequency feature enhancement block (HFFEB) for image super-resolution. The AB utilizes one-dimensional asymmetric convolutions to intensify the square convolution kernels in horizontal and vertical directions for promoting the influences of local salient features for SISR. The MEB fuses all hierarchical low-frequency features from the AB via residual learning (RL) technique to resolve the long-term dependency problem and transforms obtained low-frequency features into high-frequency features. The HFFEB exploits low- and high-frequency features to obtain more robust super-resolution features and address excessive feature enhancement problem. Addditionally, it also takes charge of reconstructing a high-resolution (HR) image. Extensive experiments show that our ACNet can effectively address single image super-resolution (SISR), blind SISR and blind SISR of blind noise problems. The code of the ACNet is shown at https://github.com/hellloxiaotian/ACNet.

Observation of heat scaling across a first-order quantum phase transition in a spinor condensate

Heat generated as a result of the breakdown of an adiabatic process is one of the central concepts of thermodynamics. In isolated systems, the heat can be defined as an energy increase due to transitions between distinct energy levels. Across a second-order quantum phase transition (QPT), the heat is predicted theoretically to exhibit a power-law scaling, but it is a significant challenge for an experimental observation. In addition, it remains elusive whether a power-law scaling of heat can exist for a first-order QPT. Here we experimentally observe a power-law scaling of heat in a spinor condensate when a system is linearly driven from a polar phase to an antiferromagnetic phase across a first-order QPT. We experimentally evaluate the heat generated during two non-equilibrium processes by probing the atom number on a hyperfine energy level. The experimentally measured scaling exponents agree well with our numerical simulation results. Our work therefore opens a new avenue to experimentally and theoretically exploring the properties of heat in non-equilibrium dynamics.

Extinction of incident hydrogen/air detonation in fine water sprays

Two-dimensional numerical simulations with Eulerian-Lagrangian method are conducted to study propagation and extinction of stoichiometric hydrogen/air detonations in fine water sprays. Parameterized by water mass loading and initial droplet size, a detonation extinction map is developed. Detonation extinction would occur with larger mass loading and/or smaller droplet size. General features of gas phase and water droplets and local detonation frontal structures are well captured. Numerical soot foils are used to characterize the influence of mass loading and droplet size on the detonation wave. The results also show that the detonation cell size increases with increased mass loading or decreased droplet size. Analysis on unsteady detonation extinction process is performed with the evolutions of detonation frontal structure, spatial distribution of thermochemical variables and interphase transfer rates (mass, energy, and momentum). Moreover, the chemical explosive mode analysis reveals that for stable detonation, thermal runaway dominates behind the Mach stem, while chemical propensities of auto-ignition and thermal runaway appear alternately behind the incident wave. When the induction zone length increases as the reaction front (RF) and shock front (SF) are decoupled, localized burned pockets surrounded by the autoignition chemical explosive mode can be observed. In addition, the interactions between detonation wave and water droplets demonstrate that the energy and momentum transfer have more direct interaction with SF and RF than the mass transfer. The interphase transfer rates increase with the water mass loading. Under the same mass loading, the smaller the droplet size, the larger the interphase transfer rates. However, the size of fine water droplets has a limited influence on the interphase momentum exchange.

An Overview of Deep-Learning-Based Audio-Visual Speech Enhancement and Separation

Speech enhancement and speech separation are two related tasks, whose purpose is to extract either one or more target speech signals, respectively, from a mixture of sounds generated by several sources. Traditionally, these tasks have been tackled using signal processing and machine learning techniques applied to the available acoustic signals. Since the visual aspect of speech is essentially unaffected by the acoustic environment, visual information from the target speakers, such as lip movements and facial expressions, has also been used for speech enhancement and speech separation systems. In order to efficiently fuse acoustic and visual information, researchers have exploited the flexibility of data-driven approaches, specifically deep learning, achieving strong performance. The ceaseless proposal of a large number of techniques to extract features and fuse multimodal information has highlighted the need for an overview that comprehensively describes and discusses audio-visual speech enhancement and separation based on deep learning. In this paper, we provide a systematic survey of this research topic, focusing on the main elements that characterise the systems in the literature: acoustic features; visual features; deep learning methods; fusion techniques; training targets and objective functions. In addition, we review deep-learning-based methods for speech reconstruction from silent videos and audio-visual sound source separation for non-speech signals, since these methods can be more or less directly applied to audio-visual speech enhancement and separation. Finally, we survey commonly employed audio-visual speech datasets, given their central role in the development of data-driven approaches, and evaluation methods, because they are generally used to compare different systems and determine their performance.

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators

Introducing magnetism into topological insulators breaks time-reversal symmetry, and the magnetic exchange interaction can open a gap in the otherwise gapless topological surface states. This allows various novel topological quantum states to be generated, including the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and axion insulator states. Magnetic doping and magnetic proximity are viewed as being useful means of exploring the interaction between topology and magnetism. However, the inhomogeneity of magnetic doping leads to complicated magnetic ordering and small exchange gaps, and consequently the observed QAHE appears only at ultralow temperatures. Therefore, intrinsic magnetic topological insulators are highly desired for increasing the QAHE working temperature and for investigating topological quantum phenomena further. The realization and characterization of such systems are essential for both fundamental physics and potential technical revolutions. This review summarizes recent research progress in intrinsic magnetic topological insulators, focusing mainly on the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 and its family of materials.

Overshooting, Critical Higgs Inflation and Second Order Gravitational Wave Signatures

The self coupling $λ$ of the Higgs boson in the Standard Model may show critical behavior, i.e. the Higgs potential may have a point at an energy scale $\sim 10^{17-18}$ GeV where both the first and second derivatives (almost) vanish. In this case the Higgs boson can serve as inflaton even if its nonminimal coupling to the curvature scalar is only ${\cal O}(10)$, thereby alleviating concerns about the perturbative unitarity of the theory. We find that just before the Higgs as inflaton enters the flat region of the potential the usual slow--roll conditions are violated. This leads to "overshooting" behavior, which in turn strongly enhances scalar curvature perturbations because of the excitation of entropic (non--adiabatic) perturbations. For appropriate choice of the free parameters these large perturbations occur at length scales relevant for the formation of primordial black holes. Even if these perturbations are not quite large enough to trigger copious black hole formation, they source second order tensor perturbations, i.e. primordial gravitational waves; the corresponding energy density can be detected by the proposed space-based gravitational wave detectors DECIGO and BBO.

ADL-MVDR: All deep learning MVDR beamformer for target speech separation

Speech separation algorithms are often used to separate the target speech from other interfering sources. However, purely neural network based speech separation systems often cause nonlinear distortion that is harmful for automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. The conventional mask-based minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer can be used to minimize the distortion, but comes with high level of residual noise. Furthermore, the matrix operations (e.g., matrix inversion) involved in the conventional MVDR solution are sometimes numerically unstable when jointly trained with neural networks. In this paper, we propose a novel all deep learning MVDR framework, where the matrix inversion and eigenvalue decomposition are replaced by two recurrent neural networks (RNNs), to resolve both issues at the same time. The proposed method can greatly reduce the residual noise while keeping the target speech undistorted by leveraging on the RNN-predicted frame-wise beamforming weights. The system is evaluated on a Mandarin audio-visual corpus and compared against several state-of-the-art (SOTA) speech separation systems. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method across several objective metrics and ASR accuracy.
