NGC 1893: a young open cluster rich in multi-type variable stars

In this work, we have studied the variable stars in the young open cluster NGC 1893 based on a multi-year photometric survey covering a sky area around the cluster up to $31' \times 31'$ wide. More than 23\,000 images in the $V$ band taken from January 2008 to February 2017 with different telescopes, complemented with 90 images in the $B$ band in 2014 and 2017, were reduced, and light curves were derived in $V$ for 5653 stars. By analyzing these light curves, we detected 147 variable stars (85 of them being new discoveries), including 110 periodic variables, 15 eclipsing binaries and 22 non-periodic variables. Proper motions, radial velocities, color-magnitude and two-color diagrams were used to identify the cluster membership of these variable stars, resulting in 84 members. Periodic variable members were then classified into different variability types, mainly according to their magnitudes and to their periods of variability, as well as to their positions in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram for the early-type stars. As a result, among main-sequence periodic variable members, we identified five $β$ Cep candidates, seven slowly pulsating B-type candidates, and thirteen fast-rotating pulsating B-type (FaRPB) candidates (one of which is a confirmed classical Be star). While most of the FaRPB stars display properties similar to the ones discovered in NGC 3766 by Mowlavi et al. (2013), five of them have periods below 0.1~d, contrary to expectations. Additional observations, including spectroscopic, are called for to further characterize these stars. We also find a binary candidate harboring a $δ$-Scuti candidate.

Equivalent Model of Transient Gyrotron Cathode Response

The gyrotron is the high power millimeter wave source in the electron cyclotron resonance heating system for the tokamak. The cathode power supply is one of the most important ancillary devices for gyrotron. Some interesting transient phenomena about the cathode voltage and the cathode current was found in the gyrotron operation in the electron cyclotron resonance heating system for the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. The cathode voltage drops to about 10% of the original value by about 90 μs in the overcurrent case, which is much longer than the 25 μs in the normal case. In order to explain these phenomena, an equivalent circuit model of the magnetron injection gun was proposed. The equivalent circuit is composed of parallel resistors and capacitors, and it can explain the test results very well. Using the equivalent circuit model to analyze gyrotrons may become an effective means of developing and operating an electron cyclotron heating system.

On cohomology of filiform Lie superalgebras

Suppose the ground field $\mathbb{F}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from 2, 3. We determine the Betti numbers and make a decomposition of the associative superalgebra of the cohomology for the model filiform Lie superalgebra. We also describe the associative superalgebra structures of the (divided power) cohomology for some low-dimensional filiform Lie superalgebras.

Adsorption of Water on Fluorinated Graphene

In this paper, we investigate the adsorption of water monomer on fluorinated graphene using state-of-the-art first principles methods within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). Four different methods are employed to describe the interactions between water and the carbon surface: The traditional DFT calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and three types of calculations using respectively the semi-empirical DFT-D2method, the original van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method, and one of its variants. Compared with the adsorption on pristine graphene, the adsorption energies of water on fluorinated graphene are significantly increased, and the orientations of water diploe moment are notably changed. The most stable configuration is found to stay right above the top site of the C atom which is bonded with F, and the dipole moment of water molecule aligns spontaneously along the surface normal.

Adsorption and Diffusion of F2 molecules on Pristine Graphene

The adsorption and diffusion of F2 molecules on pristine graphene have been studied using first-principles calculations. For the diffusion of F2 from molecular state in gas phase to the dissociative adsorption state on graphene surface, a kinetic barrier is identified, which explains the inertness of graphene in molecular F2 at room temperature, and its reactivity with F2 at higher temperatures. Studies on the diffusion of F2 molecules on graphene surface determine the energy barriers along the optimal diffusion pathways, which help to understand the high stability of fluorographene.

Constraining Dark Matter Models with a Light Mediator from PandaX-II Experiment

We search for nuclear recoil signals of dark matter models with a light mediator in PandaX-II, a direct detection experiment in China Jinping underground Laboratory. Using data collected in 2016 and 2017 runs, corresponding to a total exposure of 54 ton day, we set upper limits on the zero-momentum dark matter-nucleon cross section. These limits have a strong dependence on the mediator mass when it is comparable to or below the typical momentum transfer. We apply our results to constrain self-interacting dark matter models with a light mediator mixing with standard model particles, and set strong limits on the model parameter space for the dark matter mass ranging from $5~{\rm GeV}$ to $10~{\rm TeV}$.

Dark matter direct search sensitivity of the PandaX-4T experiment

The PandaX-4T experiment, a four-ton scale dark matter direct detection experiment, is being planned at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. In this paper we present a simulation study of the expected background in this experiment. In a 2.8-ton fiducial mass and the signal region between 1 to 10 keV electron equivalent energy, the total electron recoil background is found to be 4.9x10^{-5} /(kg day keV). The nuclear recoil background in the same region is 2.8x10^{-7}/(kg day keV). With an exposure of 5.6 ton-years, the sensitivity of PandaX-4T could reach a minimum spin-independent dark matter-nucleon cross section of 6x10^{-48} cm^{2} at a dark matter mass of 40 GeV/c^{2}.

Prediction of New Ground State Crystal Structure of Ta2O5

Tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) is a wide-gap semiconductor which has important technological applications. Despite the enormous efforts from both experimental and theoretical studies, the ground state crystal structure of Ta2O5 is not yet uniquely determined. Based on first-principles calculations in combination with evolutionary algorithm, we identify a triclinic phase of Ta2O5, which is energetically much more stable than any phases or structural models reported previously. Characterization of the static and dynamical properties of the new phase reveals the common features shared with previous metastable phases of Ta2O5. In particular, we show that the d-spacing of ~ 3.8 Å found in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of many previous experimental works, is actually the radius of the second Ta-Ta coordination shell as defined by radial distribution functions.

Binary Star Fractions from the LAMOST DR4

Stellar systems composed of single, double, triple or high-order systems are rightfully regarded as the fundamental building blocks of the Milky Way. Binary stars play an important role in formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Through comparing the radial velocity variations from multi-epoch observations, we analyze the binary fraction of dwarf stars observed with the LAMOST. Effects of different model assumptions such as orbital period distributions on the estimate of binary fractions, are investigated. The results based on log-normal distribution of orbital periods reproduce the previous complete analyses better than the power-law distribution. We find that the binary fraction increases with $T_{\rm eff}$ and decreases with [Fe/H]. We first investigate the relation between $α$-elements and binary fraction in such a large sample as the LAMOST. The old stars with high [$α$/Fe] dominate higher binary fraction than young stars with low [$α$/Fe]. At the same mass, former forming stars possess a higher binary fraction than newly forming ones, which may be related with the evolution of the Galaxy.

Class 2 quotients of solvable linear groups

Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $V$ be a completely reducible faithful $G$-module. By a result of Glauberman it has been known for a long time that if $G$ is nilpotent of class 2, then $|G| < |V|$. In this paper we generalize this result as follows. Assuming $G$ to be solvable, we show that the order of the maximal class 2 quotient of $G$ is strictly bounded above by $|V|$.

Exploring the dark matter inelastic frontier with 79.6 days of PandaX-II data

We report here the results of searching for inelastic scattering of dark matter (initial and final state dark matter particles differ by a small mass splitting) with nucleon with the first 79.6-day of PandaX-II data (Run 9). We set the upper limits for the spin independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section up to a mass splitting of 300 keV/c$^2$ at two benchmark dark matter masses of 1 and 10 TeV/c$^2$.

Limits on Axion Couplings from the first 80-day data of PandaX-II Experiment

We report new searches for the solar axions and galactic axion-like dark matter particles, using the first low-background data from PandaX-II experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory, corresponding to a total exposure of about $2.7\times 10^4$ kg$\cdot$day. No solar axion or galactic axion-like dark matter particle candidate has been identified. The upper limit on the axion-electron coupling ($g_{Ae}$) from the solar flux is found to be about $4.35 \times 10^{-12}$ in mass range from $10^{-5}$ to 1 keV/$c^2$ with 90\% confidence level, similar to the recent LUX result. We also report a new best limit from the $^{57}$Fe de-excitation. On the other hand, the upper limit from the galactic axions is on the order of $10^{-13}$ in the mass range from 1 keV/$c^2$ to 10 keV/$c^2$ with 90\% confidence level, slightly improved compared with the LUX.

Mechanical Switching of Nanoscale Multiferroic Phase Boundaries

Tuning the lattice degree of freedom in nanoscale functional crystals is critical to exploit the emerging functionalities such as piezoelectricity, shape-memory effect, or piezomagnetism, which are attributed to the intrinsic lattice-polar or lattice-spin coupling. Here it is reported that a mechanical probe can be a dynamic tool to switch the ferroic orders at the nanoscale multiferroic phase boundaries in BiFeO 3 with a phase mixture, where the material can be reversibly transformed between the "soft" tetragonal-like and the "hard" rhombohedrallike structures. The microscopic origin of the nonvolatile mechanical switching of the multiferroic phase boundaries, coupled with a reversible 180° rotation of the in-plane ferroelectric polarization, is the nanoscale pressure-induced elastic deformation and reconstruction of the spontaneous strain gradient across the multiferroic phase boundaries. The reversible control of the room-temperature multiple ferroic orders using a pure mechanical stimulus may bring us a new pathway to achieve the potential energy conversion and sensing applications.

Dark Matter Results From 54-Ton-Day Exposure of PandaX-II Experiment

We report a new search of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using the combined low background data sets in 2016 and 2017 from the PandaX-II experiment in China. The latest data set contains a new exposure of 77.1 live day, with the background reduced to a level of 0.8$\times10^{-3}$ evt/kg/day, improved by a factor of 2.5 in comparison to the previous run in 2016. No excess events were found above the expected background. With a total exposure of 5.4$\times10^4$ kg day, the most stringent upper limit on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section was set for a WIMP with mass larger than 100 GeV/c$^2$, with the lowest exclusion at 8.6$\times10^{-47}$ cm$^2$ at 40 GeV/c$^2$.

Ages and masses of million Galactic disk main sequence turn-off and sub-giant stars from the LAMOST Galactic spectroscopic surveys

We present estimates of stellar age and mass for 0.93 million Galactic disk main sequence turn-off and sub-giant stars from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Surveys. The ages and masses are determined by matching with stellar isochrones using Bayesian algorithm, utilizing effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, absolute magnitude ${\rm M}_V$, metallicity [Fe/H] and $α$-element to iron abundance ratio [$α$/Fe] deduced from the LAMOST spectra. Extensive examinations suggest the age and mass estimates are robust. The overall sample stars have a median error of 34 per cent for the age estimates, and half of the stars older than 2\,Gyr have age uncertainties of only 20--30 per cent. Median error for the mass estimates of the whole sample stars is $\sim8$ per cent. The huge dataset demonstrates good correlations among stellar age, [Fe/H] ([$α$/H]) and [$α$/Fe]. Particularly, double sequence features are revealed in the both the age--[$α$/Fe] and age--[Fe/H]([$α$/H]) spaces. In the [Fe/H]--[$α$/Fe] space, stars of 8--10\,Gyr exhibit both the thin and thick disk sequences, while younger (older) stars show only the thin (thick) disk sequence, indicating that the thin disk became prominent 8--10\,Gyr ago, while the thick disk formed earlier and almost quenched 8\,Gyr ago. Stellar ages exhibit positive vertical and negative radial gradients across the disk, and the outer disk of $R\gtrsim$\,9\,kpc exhibits a strong flare in stellar age distribution.

Update of the trigger system of the PandaX-II experiment

PandaX-II experiment is a dark matter direct detection experiment using about half-ton of liquid xenon as the sensitive target. The electrical pulses detected by photomultiplier tubes from scintillation photons of xenon are recorded by waveform digitizers. The data acquisition of Pandax-II relies on a trigger system that generates common trigger signals for all waveform digitizers. Previously an analog device-based trigger system was used for the data acquisition system. In this paper we present a new FPGA-based trigger system. The design of this system and trigger algorithms are described. The performance of this system on real data is presented.

Unexpected Robustness of the Band Gaps of TiO2 under High Pressures

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a wide band gap semiconducting material which is promising for photocatalysis. Here we present first-principles calculations to study the pressure dependence of structural and electronic properties of two TiO2 phases: the cotunnite-type and the Fe2P-type structure. The band gaps are calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), as well as the many-body perturbation theory with the GW approximation. The band gaps of both phases are found to be unexpectedly robust across a broad range pressures. The corresponding pressure coefficients are significantly smaller than that of diamond and silicon carbide (SiC), whose pressure coefficient is the smallest value ever measured by experiment. The robustness originates from the synchronous change of valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) with nearly identical rates of changes. A step-like jump of band gaps around the phase transition pressure point is expected and understood in light of the difference in crystal structures.
