Degenerate four-wave-mixing in a silica hollow bottle-like microresonator

A hollow bottle-like microresonator (BLMR) with ultra-high quality factor is fabricated from a microcapillary with nearly parabolic profile. At 1.55 $μm$ pumping, degenerate four-wave mixing can be observed for a BLMR of diameter 102 $μ$m. The parabolic profile of the BLMR guarantees a nearly zero waveguide dispersion, which is theoretically discussed in detail. From the simulation, at 1.55 $μ$m wavelength in such a BLMR, the fundamental bottle mode is in the anomalous dispersion regime, whilst the ordinary whispering gallery mode (WGM) confined at the center of the BLMR is in the normal dispersion regime. Experimentally, no degenerate FWM is observed for the WGM selected by positioning the coupling tapered fiber in the same BLMR. Furthermore, dispersion tuning is briefly discussed. As the work predicted, the BLMR shows promise for the implementation of sparsely distributed, widely spanned frequency combs at the telecommunication wavelength.

Raman lasing in a hollow, bottle-like microresonator

We report on the fabrication of an ultrahigh quality factor, bottle-like microresonator from a microcapillary, and the realization of Raman lasing therein at pump wavelengths of $1.55~\mathrm{μm}$ and $780~\mathrm{nm}$. The dependence of the Raman laser threshold on mode volume is investigated. The mode volume of the fundamental bottle mode is calculated and compared with that of a microsphere. Third-order cascaded Raman lasing was observed when pumped at $780~\mathrm{nm}$. In principle, Raman lasing in a hollow bottle-like microresonator can be used in sensing applications. As an example, we briefly discuss the possibility of a high dynamic range, high resolution aerostatic pressure sensor.

On p-parts of character degrees and conjugacy class sizes of finite groups

Let $G$ be a finite group and $Irr(G)$ the set of irreducible complex characters of $G$. Let $e_p(G)$ be the largest integer such that $p^{e_p(G)}$ divides $χ(1)$ for some $χ\in Irr(G)$. We show that $|G:\mathbf{F}(G)|_p \leq p^{k e_p(G)}$ for a constant $k$. This settles a conjecture of A. Moretó. We also study the related problems of the $p$-parts of conjugacy class sizes of finite groups.

Optomechanical Transduction and Characterization of a Silica Microsphere Pendulum via Evanescent Light

Dissipative optomechanics has some advantages in cooling compared to the conventional dispersion dominated systems. Here, we study the optical response of a cantilever-like, silica, microsphere pendulum, evanescently coupled to a fiber taper. In a whispering gallery mode resonator the cavity mode and motion of the pendulum result in both dispersive and dissipative optomechanical interactions. This unique mechanism leads to an experimentally observable, asymmetric response function of the transduction spectrum which can be explained using coupled-mode theory. The optomechanical transduction, and its relationship to the external coupling gap, are investigated and we show that the experimental behavior is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. A deep understanding of this mechanism is necessary to explore trapping and cooling in dissipative optomechanical systems.

Coupled-mode induced transparency in aerostatically-tuned microbubble whispering gallery resonators

Coupled-mode induced transparency is realized in a single microbubble whispering gallery mode resonator. Using aerostatic tuning, we find that the pressure induced shifting rates are different for different radial order modes. A finite element simulation considering both the strain and stress effects shows a GHz/bar difference and this is confirmed by experiments. A transparency spectrum is obtained when a first order mode shifts across a higher order mode through precise pressure tuning. The resulting lineshapes are fitted with the theory. This work lays a foundation for future applications in microbubble sensing.

Blocks of defect of p-solvable groups

Let $p$ be a prime such that $p \geq 5$. Let $G$ be a finite $p$-solvable group and let $p^a$ be the largest power of $p$ dividing $χ(1)$ for an irreducible character $χ$ of $G$, we show that $|G:F(G)|_p \leq p^{5.5a}$. Let $G$ be a finite $p$-solvable group with trivial maximal normal solvable subgroup and we denote $|G|_p=p^n$, then $G$ contains a block of defect less than or equal to $\lfloor \frac {2n} {3} \rfloor$.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the growth of thin amorphous hydrogenated carbon films on diamond surface

The growth of thin amorphous hydrogenated carbon films (a-C:H) on diamond (111) surface from the bombardment of CH2 radicals is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The structural analysis shows that the local structure (e.g., the first coordination number of C atoms) of a-C:H depends critically on the content of hydrogen. The increase of kinetic energy of incident radicals leads to the decrease of hydrogen content, which subsequently changes the ratio of sp3 bonded C atoms in a-C:H.

Permutation Groups and Orbits on Power Sets

Let $G$ be a permutation group of degree $n$ and let $s(G)$ denote the number of set-orbits of $G$. We determine $\inf(\frac {\log_2 s(G)} n)$ over all groups $G$ that satisfy certain restrictions on composition factors (i.e. $Alt(k), k > 4$ cannot be obtained as a quotient of a subgroup of $G$).

Injection performance evaluation for storage ring of SSRF

Injection performance of storage ring is one of the important factors for the light efficiency and quality of Synchrotron Radiation Facility when it is in top-up mode. To evaluate the injection performance of storage ring at SSRF, we build a bunch-by-bunch position measuring system based on oscilloscope IOC. Accurate assessment of energy mismatching, distribution of residual oscillation and angle error of injection kickers can be achieved by this system.

Assessing Technical Performance in Differential Gene Expression Experiments with External Spike-in RNA Control Ratio Mixtures

There is a critical need for standard approaches to assess, report, and compare the technical performance of genome-scale differential gene expression experiments. We assess technical performance with a proposed "standard" dashboard of metrics derived from analysis of external spike-in RNA control ratio mixtures. These control ratio mixtures with defined abundance ratios enable assessment of diagnostic performance of differentially expressed transcript lists, limit of detection of ratio (LODR) estimates, and expression ratio variability and measurement bias. The performance metrics suite is applicable to analysis of a typical experiment, and here we also apply these metrics to evaluate technical performance among laboratories. An interlaboratory study using identical samples shared amongst 12 laboratories with three different measurement processes demonstrated generally consistent diagnostic power across 11 laboratories. Ratio measurement variability and bias were also comparable amongst laboratories for the same measurement process. Different biases were observed for measurement processes using different mRNA enrichment protocols.

Exceptionally Long-ranged Lattice Relaxation in Oxygen-deficient Ta2O5

The lattice relaxation in oxygen-deficient Ta2O5 is investigated using first-principles calculations. The presence of a charge-neutral oxygen vacancy can result in a long-ranged lattice relaxation which extends beyond 18 Å from the vacancy site. The lattice relaxation has significant effects on the vacancy formation energy as well as the electronic structures. The long-ranged behavior of the lattice relaxation is explained in terms of the Hellmann-Feynman forces and the potential energy surface related to the variation of Ta-O bond lengths.

Quasi-droplet Microbubbles for High Resolution Sensing Applications

Optical properties and sensing capabilities of fused silica microbubbles were studied numerically using a finite element method. Mode characteristics, such as quality factor (Q) and effective refractive index, were determined for different bubble diameters and shell thicknesses. For sensing applications with whispering gallery modes (WGMs), thinner shells yield improved sensitivity. However, the Q-factor decreases with reduced thickness and this limits the final resolution. Three types of sensing applications with microbubbles, based on their optimized geometrical parameters, were studied. Herein the so-called quasi-droplet regime is defined and discussed. It is shown that best resolution can be achieved when microbubbles act as quasi-droplets, even for water-filled cavities at the telecommunications C-band.

On whether zero is in the global attractor of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations

The set of nonzero external forces for which the zero function is in the global attractor of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations is shown to be meagre in a Fréchet topology. A criterion in terms of a Taylor expansion in complex time is used to characterize the forces in this set. This leads to several relations between certain Gevrey subclasses of $C^{\infty}$ and a new upper bound for a Gevrey norm of solutions in the attractor, valid in the strip of analyticity in time.

Time analyticity with higher norm estimates for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations

This paper establishes bounds on norms of all orders for solutions on the global attractor of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, complexified in time. Specifically, for periodic boundary conditions on $[0,L]^2$, and a force $g\in\calD(A^{\frac{α-1}{2}})$, we show there is a fixed strip about the real time axis on which a uniform bound $|A^αu|< m_ανκ_0^α$ holds for each $α\in \bN$. Here $ν$ is viscosity, $\k0=2π/L$, and $m_α$ is explicitly given in terms of $g$ and $α$. We show that if any element in $\calA$ is in $\D(A^α)$, then all of $\calA$ is in $\D(A^α)$, and likewise with $\D(A^α)$ replaced by $C^\infty(Ω)$. We demonstrate the universality of this "all for one, one for all" law on the union of a hierarchal set of function classes. Finally, we treat the question of whether the zero solution can be in the global attractor for a nonzero force by showing that if this is so, the force must be in a particular function class.

On nilpotent and solvable quotients of primitive groups

It is shown that if $G$ is a primitive permutation group on a set of size $n$, then any nilpotent quotient of $G$ has order at most $n^β$ and any solvable quotient of $G$ has order at most $n^{α+1}$ where $β=\log 32/ \log 9$ and $α=(3 \log (48)+\log (24))/ (3 \cdot \log (9))$. This was motivated by a result of Aschbacher and Guralnick

On the commuting probability and supersolvability of finite groups

For a finite group $G$, let $d(G)$ denote the probability that a randomly chosen pair of elements of $G$ commute. We prove that if $d(G)>1/s$ for some integer $s>1$ and $G$ splits over an abelian normal nontrivial subgroup $N$, then $G$ has a nontrivial conjugacy class inside $N$ of size at most $s-1$. We also extend two results of Barry, MacHale, and N\'ı Shé on the commuting probability in connection with supersolvability of finite groups. In particular, we prove that if $d(G)>5/16$ then either $G$ is supersolvable, or $G$ isoclinic to $A_4$, or $G/\Center(G)$ is isoclinic to $A_4$.

Effects of Pressure on the Electronic Structures of LaOFeP

We studied the electronic structures of LaOFeP under applied pressure using first-principles calculations. The electronic density of states at the Fermi level decreases continuously with increasing pressure. The electron branches of Fermi surfaces are rather robust to pressure, while the hole branches change significantly. Two hole surfaces shrink into small ellipsoid-like surfaces and disappear finally, at which the applied pressure is ~ 74.7 GPa. The pressure response can be understood by the band structures around the Fermi level. Comparative studies reveal that the disappearance of hole surfaces is mainly due to the compression of the FeP layer along the c-axis of unit cell.

Electronic Structures of Oxygen-deficient Ta2O5

We provide a first-principles description of the crystalline and oxygen-deficient Ta2O5 using refined computational methods and models. By performing calculations on a number of candidate structures, we determined the low-temperature phase and several stable oxygen vacancy configurations, which are notably different from the previous results. The most stable charge-neutral vacancy site induces a shallow level near the bottom of conduction band. Stability of different charge states is studied. Based on the results, we discuss the implications of the level structures on experiments, including the leakage current in Ta2O5-based electronic devices and catalysts.
