Compositions of pseudo-symmetric integrators with complex coefficients for the numerical integration of differential equations

In this paper, we are concerned with the construction and analysis of a new class of methods obtained as double jump compositions with complex coefficients and projection on the real axis. It is shown in particular that the new integrators are symmetric and symplectic up to high orders if one uses a symmetric and symplectic basic method. In terms of efficiency, the aforementioned technique requires fewer stages than standard compositions of the same orders and is thus expected to lead to faster methods.

Optical image decomposition and noise filtering based on Laguerre-Gaussian modes

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an efficient image decomposition in the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) domain. By developing an advanced computing method, the sampling points are much fewer than those in the existing methods, which can significantly improve the calculation efficiency. The beam waist, azimuthal and radial truncation orders of the LG modes are optimized depending on the image information to be restored. In the experiment, we decompose an image by using about 30000 LG modes and realize a high-fidelity reconstruction. Furthermore, we show image noise reduction through LG domain filtering. Our results open a door for LG-mode based image processing.

Laguerre-Gaussian transform for rotating image processing

Rotation is a common motional form in nature, existing from atoms and molecules, industrial turbines to astronomical objects. However, it still lacks an efficient and reliable method for real-time image processing of a fast-rotating object. Since the Fourier spectrum of a rotating object changes rapidly, the traditional Fourier transform (FT) techniques become extremely complicated and time consuming. Here, we propose a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) transform to analyze the rotating object with LG-mode basis. The rotation operation provides a feasible way to acquire LG spectrum, which is similar to the function of lens in FT. Particularly, the obtained LG spectrum does not change even the object working at a high rotating speed. By analyzing the LG spectrum, one can perform image processing such as reconstruction, edge enhancement, and pattern replication. Such LG transform provides an efficient and convenient way to real-time monitor and analyze a fast-rotating object in scientific research and industry.

Effective and Robust Detection of Adversarial Examples via Benford-Fourier Coefficients

Adversarial examples have been well known as a serious threat to deep neural networks (DNNs). In this work, we study the detection of adversarial examples, based on the assumption that the output and internal responses of one DNN model for both adversarial and benign examples follow the generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD), but with different parameters (i.e., shape factor, mean, and variance). GGD is a general distribution family to cover many popular distributions (e.g., Laplacian, Gaussian, or uniform). It is more likely to approximate the intrinsic distributions of internal responses than any specific distribution. Besides, since the shape factor is more robust to different databases rather than the other two parameters, we propose to construct discriminative features via the shape factor for adversarial detection, employing the magnitude of Benford-Fourier coefficients (MBF), which can be easily estimated using responses. Finally, a support vector machine is trained as the adversarial detector through leveraging the MBF features. Extensive experiments in terms of image classification demonstrate that the proposed detector is much more effective and robust on detecting adversarial examples of different crafting methods and different sources, compared to state-of-the-art adversarial detection methods.

Generations of high efficiency, high purity, and broadband Laguerre-Gaussian modes from a Janus optical parametric oscillator

Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes, carrying orbital angular momentum of light, are critical for important applications such as high-capacity optical communications, super-resolution imaging, and multi-dimensional quantum entanglement. Advanced developments in these applications strongly demand reliable and tunable LG mode laser sources, which, however, do not yet exist. Here, we experimentally demonstrate highly-efficient, highly-pure, broadly-tunable, and topological-charge-controllable LG modes from a Janus optical parametric oscillator (OPO). Janus OPO featuring two-face cavity mode is designed to guarantee an efficient evolution from a Gaussian-shaped fundamental pumping mode to a desired LG parametric mode. The output LG mode has a tunable wavelength between 1.5 um and 1.6 um with a conversion efficiency above 15%, a topological charge switchable from -4 to 4, and a mode purity as high as 97%, which provides a high-performance solid-state light source for high-end demands in multi-dimensional multiplexing/demultiplexing, control of spin-orbital coupling between light and atoms, and so on.

Hydrogenated Fullerenes (Fulleranes) in Space

Since the first laboratory synthesis of C$_{60}$ in 1985, fullerene-related species have been proposed to interpret various astronomical features. After more than 25 years' efforts, several circumstellar and interstellar features have been convincingly assigned to C$_{60}$, C$_{70}$, and C$_{60}^+$. These successes resulted from the recent advancements in observational, experimental, as well as computational techniques, and re-stimulated interest in searching for fullerene derivatives in space. As one of the most important fullerene derivatives, hydrogenated fullerene (fullerane) is likely to exist in circumstellar and interstellar conditions. This review gives an overview of the chemical properties and spectral signals of fulleranes focusing on those relevant to astronomy. We summarize previous proposals of fulleranes as the carrier of astronomical features at UV, optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths, and discuss the arguments favoring or disfavoring the presence of fulleranes in astronomical environments. Although no unambiguous detection of fulleranes in space has yet been reported, there are plausible evidences for supporting the formation of certain fullerane isomers.

COVID-19 infection and recovery in various countries: Modeling the dynamics and evaluating the non-pharmaceutical mitigation scenarios

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic radically impacts our lives, while the transmission/infection and recovery dynamics of COVID-19 remain obscure. A time-dependent Susceptible, Exposed, Infectious, and Recovered (SEIR) model was proposed and applied to fit and then predict the time series of COVID-19 evolution observed in the last three months (till 3/22/2020) in various provinces and metropolises in China. The model results revealed the space dependent transmission/infection rate and the significant spatiotemporal variation in the recovery rate, likely due to the continuous improvement of screening techniques and public hospital systems, as well as full city lockdowns in China. The validated SEIR model was then applied to predict COVID-19 evolution in United States, Italy, Japan, and South Korea which have responded differently to monitoring and mitigating COVID-19 so far, although these predictions contain high uncertainty due to the intrinsic change of the maximum infected population and the infection/recovery rates within the different countries. In addition, a stochastic model based on the random walk particle tracking scheme, analogous to a mixing-limited bimolecular reaction model, was developed to evaluate non-pharmaceutical strategies to mitigate COVID-19 spread. Preliminary tests using the stochastic model showed that self-quarantine may not be as efficient as strict social distancing in slowing COVID-19 spread, if not all of the infected people can be promptly diagnosed and quarantined.

Singular Solutions in Soft Limits

A generalization of the scattering equations on $X(2,n)$, the configuration space of $n$ points on $\mathbb{CP}^1$, to higher dimensional projective spaces was recently introduced by Early, Guevara, Mizera, and one of the authors. One of the new features in $X(k,n)$ with $k>2$ is the presence of both regular and singular solutions in a soft limit. In this work we study soft limits in $X(3,7)$, $X(4,7)$, $X(3,8)$ and $X(5,8)$, find all singular solutions, and show their geometrical configurations. More explicitly, for $X(3,7)$ and $X(4,7)$ we find $180$ and $120$ singular solutions which when added to the known number of regular solutions both give rise to $1\, 272$ solutions as it is expected since $X(3,7)\sim X(4,7)$. Likewise, for $X(3,8)$ and $X(5,8)$ we find $59\, 640$ and $58\, 800$ singular solutions which when added to the regular solutions both give rise to $188\, 112$ solutions. We also propose a classification of all configurations that can support singular solutions for general $X(k,n)$ and comment on their contribution to soft expansions of generalized biadjoint amplitudes.

Discovery of Extended Structures around Two Evolved Planetary Nebulae M 2-55 and Abell 2

We report a multi-wavelength study of two evolved planetary nebulae (PNs) M 2-55 and Abell 2. Deep optical narrow-band images ([O III], H?, and [N II]) of M 2-55 reveal two pairs of bipolar lobes and a new faint arc-like structure. This arc-shaped filament around M 2-55 appears a well-defined boundary from southwest to southeast, strongly suggesting that this nebula is in interaction with its surrounding interstellar medium. From the imaging data of Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) all-sky survey, we discovered extensive mid-infrared halos around these PNs, which are approximately twice larger than their main nebulae seen in the visible. We also present a mid-resolution optical spectrum of M 2-55, which shows that it is a high-excitation evolved PN with a low electron density of 250 cm^-3. Furthermore, we investigate the properties of these nebulae from their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) by means of archival data.

Controllable Descendant Face Synthesis

Kinship face synthesis is an interesting topic raised to answer questions like "what will your future children look like?". Published approaches to this topic are limited. Most of the existing methods train models for one-versus-one kin relation, which only consider one parent face and one child face by directly using an auto-encoder without any explicit control over the resemblance of the synthesized face to the parent face. In this paper, we propose a novel method for controllable descendant face synthesis, which models two-versus-one kin relation between two parent faces and one child face. Our model consists of an inheritance module and an attribute enhancement module, where the former is designed for accurate control over the resemblance between the synthesized face and parent faces, and the latter is designed for control over age and gender. As there is no large scale database with father-mother-child kinship annotation, we propose an effective strategy to train the model without using the ground truth descendant faces. No carefully designed image pairs are required for learning except only age and gender labels of training faces. We conduct comprehensive experimental evaluations on three public benchmark databases, which demonstrates encouraging results.

Is an upturn commonly seen in Fermi-LAT GRB afterglow spectra?

We analyzed 199 GRBs detected by Fermi-LAT during the years 2008-2019. We found 67 photons at energies >=10 GeV, which come from 34 GRBs. Out of these 34 GRBs, Fermi-LAT detects significant (TS>=4) afterglow 0.1-200 GeV photons from 25 GRBs. We present time-integrated 0.1-200 GeV spectra of these 25 GRBs. The spectra of a significant fraction (9/25) of these GRBs revealed a harder component above an energy break of 0.3-2 GeV. While shock synchrotron may account for the photons at the lower energy end, high energy photons above the break is naturally explained by synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission. We perform broadband model fit to the X-ray-LAT emission of GRB 131231A. Comparing the afterglow spectra of these 25 GRBs with other Fermi-LAT detected GRBs, we found that the power-law index distribution is similar for the two populations. This may indicate that the additional high-energy component may also exist in Fermi-LAT GRBs in general.

Tencent ML-Images: A Large-Scale Multi-Label Image Database for Visual Representation Learning

In existing visual representation learning tasks, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are often trained on images annotated with single tags, such as ImageNet. However, a single tag cannot describe all important contents of one image, and some useful visual information may be wasted during training. In this work, we propose to train CNNs from images annotated with multiple tags, to enhance the quality of visual representation of the trained CNN model. To this end, we build a large-scale multi-label image database with 18M images and 11K categories, dubbed Tencent ML-Images. We efficiently train the ResNet-101 model with multi-label outputs on Tencent ML-Images, taking 90 hours for 60 epochs, based on a large-scale distributed deep learning framework,i.e.,TFplus. The good quality of the visual representation of the Tencent ML-Images checkpoint is verified through three transfer learning tasks, including single-label image classification on ImageNet and Caltech-256, object detection on PASCAL VOC 2007, and semantic segmentation on PASCAL VOC 2012. The Tencent ML-Images database, the checkpoints of ResNet-101, and all the training codehave been released at https://github.com/Tencent/tencent-ml-images. It is expected to promote other vision tasks in the research and industry community.

Structural-Aware Sentence Similarity with Recursive Optimal Transport

Measuring sentence similarity is a classic topic in natural language processing. Light-weighted similarities are still of particular practical significance even when deep learning models have succeeded in many other tasks. Some light-weighted similarities with more theoretical insights have been demonstrated to be even stronger than supervised deep learning approaches. However, the successful light-weighted models such as Word Mover's Distance [Kusner et al., 2015] or Smooth Inverse Frequency [Arora et al., 2017] failed to detect the difference from the structure of sentences, i.e. order of words. To address this issue, we present Recursive Optimal Transport (ROT) framework to incorporate the structural information with the classic OT. Moreover, we further develop Recursive Optimal Similarity (ROTS) for sentences with the valuable semantic insights from the connections between cosine similarity of weighted average of word vectors and optimal transport. ROTS is structural-aware and with low time complexity compared to optimal transport. Our experiments over 20 sentence textural similarity (STS) datasets show the clear advantage of ROTS over all weakly supervised approaches. Detailed ablation study demonstrate the effectiveness of ROT and the semantic insights.

Fast library-driven approach for implementation of the voxel spread function technique for correcting magnetic field inhomogeneity artifacts

Purpose: Previously-developed Voxel Spread Function (VSF) method (Yablonskiy, et al, MRM, 2013;70:1283) provides means to correct artifacts induced by macroscopic magnetic field inhomogeneities in the images obtained by multi-Gradient-Recalled-Echo (mGRE) techniques. The goal of this study is to develop a library-driven approach for fast VSF implementation. Methods: The VSF approach describes the contribution of the magnetic field inhomogeneity effects on the mGRE signal decay in terms of the F-function calculated from mGRE phase and magnitude images. A pre-calculated library accounting for a variety of background field gradients caused by magnetic field inhomogeneities was used herein to speed up calculation of the F-function and to generate quantitative R2* maps from the mGRE data collected from two healthy volunteers. Results: As compared with direct calculation of the F-function based on a voxel-wise approach, the new library-driven method substantially reduces computational time from several hours to few minutes, while, at the same time, providing similar accuracy of R2* mapping. Conclusion: The new procedure proposed in this study provides a fast post-processing algorithm that can be incorporated in the quantitative analysis of mGRE data to account for background field inhomogeneity artifacts, thus can facilitate the applications of mGRE-based quantitative techniques in clinical practices.

λ = 2 mm spectroscopy observations toward the circumnuclear disk of NGC 1068

Aims. We investigate the physical and chemical conditions of molecular gas in the circumnuclear disk (CND) region of NGC 1068. Methods. We carried out a spectral line survey with the IRAM 30m telescope toward the center of NGC 1068 and mainly focused on the 2 mm band with a frequency coverage of 160.7-168.6 GHz and 176.5-184.3 GHz. Results. Fifteen lines are detected in NGC 1068, eight of which are new detections for this galaxy. We derive the rotation temperatures and column densities of fourteen molecular species. Conclusions. Based on the [HCO+ (2 - 1)]/[HOC+ (2 - 1)] ratio, we obtain a high ionization degree in the CND of NGC 1068. It is found that HC3N is concentrated in the east knot, while 13CCH, CH3CN, SO, HOC+, CS, CH3CCH, and H2CO are concentrated in the west knot. Compared to the star-forming galaxies M 82 and NGC 253, the chemistry of NGC 1068 might be less strongly affected by the UV radiation field, and its kinetic temperature might be lower.

Amenability properties of Banach algebra valued continuous functions

Let $X$ be a compact Hausdorff space and $A$ a Banach algebra. We investigate amenability properties of the algebra $C(X,A)$ of all $A$-valued continuous functions. We show that $C(X,A)$ has a bounded approximate diagonal if and only if $A$ has a bounded approximate diagonal; if $A$ has a compactly central approximate diagonal (unbounded) then $C(X,A)$ has a compactly approximate diagonal. Weak amenability of $C(X,A)$ for commutative $A$ is also considered.

Fixed point properties for semigroups of nonlinear mappings on unbounded sets

A well-known result of W. Ray asserts that if $C$ is an unbounded convex subset of a Hilbert space, then there is a nonexpansive mapping $T$: $C\to C$ that has no fixed point. In this paper we establish some common fixed point properties for a semitopological semigroup $S$ of nonexpansive mappings acting on a closed convex subset $C$ of a Hilbert space, assuming that there is a point $c\in C$ with a bounded orbit and assuming that certain subspace of $C_b(S)$ has a left invariant mean. Left invariant mean (or amenability) is an important notion in harmonic analysis of semigroups and groups introduced by von Neumann in 1929 \cite{Neu} and formalized by Day in 1957 \cite{Day}. In our investigation we use the notion of common attractive points introduced recently by S. Atsushiba and W. Takahashi.
