Universal law of thermalization for one-dimensional perturbed Toda lattices

The Toda lattice is a nonlinear but integrable system. Here we study the thermalization problem in one-dimensional, perturbed Toda lattices in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the thermalization time, $T_{eq}$, follows a universal law; i.e., $T_{eq}\sim ε^{-2}$, where the perturbation strength, $ε$, characterizes the nonlinear perturbations added to the Toda potential. This universal law applies generally to weak nonlinear lattices due to their equivalence to perturbed Toda systems.

Squeezed back-to-back correlation between bosons and antibosons with different in-medium masses in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

We derive the formulas of the squeezed back-to-back correlation (SBBC) between a boson and antiboson with different in-medium masses in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The influence of the in-medium mass difference between a boson and antiboson on the SBBC is investigated. We calculate the SBBC functions of $D$-meson pairs for the hydrodynamic sources described by the VISH2+1 code for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =200$~GeV. Our results indicate that the SBBC strengths of $D^+D^-$ and $D^0{\bar D}^0$ are different if there are charge-dependent in-medium interactions.

Performance Analysis of Non-Orthogonal Multicast in Two-tier Heterogeneous Networks

With the explosive growth of mobile services, non-orthogonal broadcast/multicast transmissions can effectively improves spectrum efficiency. Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) represents a paradigm shift from conventional orthogonal multiple-access (OMA) concepts and has been recognized as one of the key enabling technologies for fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. In this paper, a two-tier heterogeneous network is studied, in which the wireless signal power is partitioned by the NOMA scheme. Moreover, the coverage probability, the average rate and the average QoE are derived to evaluate network performance. Simulation results show that compared with the OMA method, non-orthogonal broadcast/multicast method improve both the average user rate and QoE in the two-tier heterogeneous network.

Unifying Topic, Sentiment & Preference in an HDP-Based Rating Regression Model for Online Reviews

This paper proposes a new HDP based online review rating regression model named Topic-Sentiment-Preference Regression Analysis (TSPRA). TSPRA combines topics (i.e. product aspects), word sentiment and user preference as regression factors, and is able to perform topic clustering, review rating prediction, sentiment analysis and what we invent as "critical aspect" analysis altogether in one framework. TSPRA extends sentiment approaches by integrating the key concept "user preference" in collaborative filtering (CF) models into consideration, while it is distinct from current CF models by decoupling "user preference" and "sentiment" as independent factors. Our experiments conducted on 22 Amazon datasets show overwhelming better performance in rating predication against a state-of-art model FLAME (2015) in terms of error, Pearson's Correlation and number of inverted pairs. For sentiment analysis, we compare the derived word sentiments against a public sentiment resource SenticNet3 and our sentiment estimations clearly make more sense in the context of online reviews. Last, as a result of the de-correlation of "user preference" from "sentiment", TSPRA is able to evaluate a new concept "critical aspects", defined as the product aspects seriously concerned by users but negatively commented in reviews. Improvement to such "critical aspects" could be most effective to enhance user experience.

Siamese Networks for Semantic Pattern Similarity

Semantic Pattern Similarity is an interesting, though not often encountered NLP task where two sentences are compared not by their specific meaning, but by their more abstract semantic pattern (e.g., preposition or frame). We utilize Siamese Networks to model this task, and show its usefulness in determining SQL patterns for unseen questions in a database-backed question answering scenario. Our approach achieves high accuracy and contains a built-in proxy for confidence, which can be used to keep precision arbitrarily high.

Universality of Energy Equipartition in One-dimensional Lattices

We show that a general one-dimensional (1D) lattice with nonlinear inter-particle interactions can always be thermalized for arbitrarily small nonlinearity in the thermodynamic limit, thus proving equipartition hypothesis in statistical physics for an important class of systems. Particularly, we find that in the lattices of interaction potential $V(x)=x^2/2+λx^n/n$ with $n\geq4$, there is \textit{a universal scaling law} for the thermalization time $T^{eq}$, i.e., $T^{eq}\proptoλ^{-2}ε^{-(n-2)}$, where $ε$ is the energy density. Numerical simulations confirm that it is accurate for an even $n$. A slight correction is needed for an odd $n$, which is due to the Chirikov overlap occurring in the weakly nonlinear regime between extra vibration modes excited by the asymmetry of potential. Based on this scaling law, as well as previous prediction for the case of $n=3$, a universal formula for the thermalization time for a 1D lattice with a general interaction potential is obtained.

CHY formulae in 4d

In this paper, we develop a rather general way to reduce integrands with polarization involved in the Cachazo-He-Yuan formulae, such as the reduced Pfaffian, its compactiffcation and its squeezing, as well as the new object for F^3 amplitude. We prove that the reduced Pfaffian vanishes unless evaluated on a certain set of solutions. It leads us to build up the 4d CHY formulae using spinors, which strains off many useless solutions. The supersymmetrization is straightforward and may provide a hint to understand ambitwistor string in 4d.

On the Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer type congruences for some truncated hypergeometric ${}_1F_0$ series

Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $n$ be a positive integer. For any positive integer $α$ and $m\in\{1,2,3\}$, we have \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p^αn-1}\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\cdot\frac{(-4)^k}{m^k}\equiv\bigg(\frac{m(m-4)}{p}\bigg)\sum_{k=0}^{p^{α-1}n-1}\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\cdot\frac{(-4)^k}{m^k}\pmod{p^{2α}}, \end{align*} where $(x)_k=x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1)$ and $\big(\frac{\cdot}{\cdot}\big)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. Also, when $m=4$, \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p^αn-1}(-1)^k\cdot\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\equiv p\sum_{k=0}^{p^{α-1}n-1}(-1)^k\cdot\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\pmod{p^{2α}}. \end{align*}

Human activity recognition based on time series analysis using U-Net

Traditional human activity recognition (HAR) based on time series adopts sliding window analysis method. This method faces the multi-class window problem which mistakenly labels different classes of sampling points within a window as a class. In this paper, a HAR algorithm based on U-Net is proposed to perform activity labeling and prediction at each sampling point. The activity data of the triaxial accelerometer is mapped into an image with the single pixel column and multi-channel which is input into the U-Net network for training and recognition. Our proposal can complete the pixel-level gesture recognition function. The method does not need manual feature extraction and can effectively identify short-term behaviors in long-term activity sequences. We collected the Sanitation dataset and tested the proposed scheme with four open data sets. The experimental results show that compared with Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN), Decision Tree(DT), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Fully Convolutional Networks (FCN) methods, our proposal has the highest accuracy and F1-socre in each dataset, and has stable performance and high robustness. At the same time, after the U-Net has finished training, our proposal can achieve fast enough recognition speed.

Time stamps of vertical phase mixing in the Galactic disk from LAMOST-Gaia stars

The perturbation mechanism of the Galactic disk has puzzled us for a long time. The imprints from perturbations provide important diagnostics on the disk formation and evolution. Here we try to constrain when the vertical perturbation took place in the disk by tracking the phase mixing history. Firstly, we clearly depict the spiral structures of radial ($v_R$) and azimuthal ($v_ϕ$) velocities in the phase space of the vertical position and velocity ($z$-$v_z$) with 723,871 LAMOST-Gaia combined stars. Then, we investigate the variation of the spirals with stellar age ($τ$) by dividing the sample into seven stellar age bins. Finally, we find that the spirals explicitly exist in all the bins, even in the bin of $τ<0.5$\,Gyr, except for the bin of $τ>6.0$\,Gyr. This constrains the vertical perturbation probably starting no later than 0.5\,Gyr ago. But we can not rule out whether the young stars ($τ<0.5$\,Gyr) inherit the oscillations from the perturbed ISM where they born from. This study provides some important observational evidences to understand the disk perturbation mechanisms, even the formation and evolution of our Galaxy.

Electronic structures of impurities and point defects in semiconductors

A brief history of the impurity theories in semiconductors is provided. A bound exciton model is proposed for both donor- and acceptor- like impurities and point defects, which offers a unified understanding for "shallow" and "deep" impurities and point defects. The underlying physics of computational results using different density-functional theory based approaches are discussed and interpreted in the framework of the bound exciton model.

Generating controllable Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes through intracavity spin-orbital angular momentum conversion of light

The rapid developments in orbital-angular-momentum-carrying Laguerre-Gaussian (LG0 l) modes in recent years have facilitated progresses in optical communication, micromanipulation and quantum information. However, it is still challenging to efficiently generate bright, pure and selectable LG0 l laser modes in compact devices. Here, we demonstrate a low-threshold solid-state laser that can directly output selected high-purity LG0 l modes with high efficiency and controllability. Spin-orbital angular momentum conversion of light is used to reversibly convert the transverse modes inside cavity and determine the output mode index. The generated LG0 1 and LG0 2 laser modes have purities of ~97% and ~93% and slope efficiencies of ~11% and ~5.1%, respectively. Moreover, our cavity design can be easily extended to produce higher-order Laguerre-Gaussian modes and cylindrical vector beams. Such compact laser configuration features flexible control, low threshold, and robustness, making it a practical tool for applications in super-resolution imaging, high-precision interferometer and quantum correlations.

Angular Upsampling in Infant Diffusion MRI Using Neighborhood Matching in x-q Space

Diffusion MRI requires sufficient coverage of the diffusion wavevector space, also known as the q-space, to adequately capture the pattern of water diffusion in various directions and scales. As a result, the acquisition time can be prohibitive for individuals who are unable to stay still in the scanner for an extensive period of time, such as infants. To address this problem, in this paper we harness non-local self-similar information in the x-q space of diffusion MRI data for q-space upsampling. Specifically, we first perform neighborhood matching to establish the relationships of signals in x-q space. The signal relationships are then used to regularize an ill-posed inverse problem related to the estimation of high angular resolution diffusion MRI data from its low-resolution counterpart. Our framework allows information from curved white matter structures to be used for effective regularization of the otherwise ill-posed problem. Extensive evaluations using synthetic and infant diffusion MRI data demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Compared with the widely adopted interpolation methods using spherical radial basis functions and spherical harmonics, our method is able to produce high angular resolution diffusion MRI data with greater quality, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Scattering Forms, Worldsheet Forms and Amplitudes from Subspaces

We present a general construction of two types of differential forms, based on any $(n{-}3)$-dimensional subspace in the kinematic space of $n$ massless particles. The first type is the so-called projective, scattering forms in kinematic space, while the second is defined in the moduli space of $n$-punctured Riemann spheres which we call worldsheet forms. We show that the pushforward of worldsheet forms, by summing over solutions of scattering equations, gives the corresponding scattering forms, which generalizes the results of [1711.09102]. The pullback of scattering forms to subspaces can have natural interpretations as amplitudes in terms of Bern-Carrasco-Johansson double-copy construction or Cachazo-He-Yuan formula. As an application of our formalism, we construct in this way a large class of $d\log$ scattering forms and worldsheet forms, which are in one-to-one correspondence with non-planar MHV leading singularities in ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills. For every leading singularity function, we present a new determinant formula in moduli space, as well as a (combinatoric) polytope and associated scattering form in kinematic space. These include the so-called Cayley cases, where in each case the scattering form is the canonical forms of a convex polytope in the subspace, and scattering equations admit elegant rewritings as a map from the moduli space to the subspace.

Metallicity and Kinematics of the Galactic halo from the LAMOST sample stars

We study the metallicity distribution and kinematic properties of 4,680 A/F/G/K-type giant stars with $|z|>$ 5 kpc selected from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. The metallicity distribution of giant stars with 5 $<|z|\leqslant$ 15 kpc can be described by a three-peak Gaussian model with peaks at [Fe/H] $\sim-0.6\pm0.1$, $-1.2\pm0.3$ and $-2.0\pm0.2$, corresponding to the ratio of 19$\%$, 74$\%$ and 7$\%$, respectively. The $\rm{[α/Fe]}$ is used to associate the three peaks with the thick disk, inner-halo and outer-halo components of the Galaxy. The metallicity distribution of these giant stars, which is fit with Gaussians corresponding to the three components, show a growing fraction of inner-halo component and declining fraction of the thick-disk component with increasing distance from the Galactic plane. Adopting a galaxy potential model, we also derive the orbital parameters of the sample stars, such as orbit eccentricity and rotation velocity. The peak values of derived orbital eccentricity for stars covering different metallicity regions maintain $e\sim$ 0.75, independent of height above the plane, within the range 5$<|z|<$ 15 kpc. By comparing the MDFs of stars in different rotation velocity intervals, we find that the majority of the retrograde stars are more metal-poor than the prograde stars.

Gauge invariance induced relations and the equivalence between distinct approaches to NLSM amplitudes

In this paper, we derive generalized Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations for color-ordered Yang-Mills amplitudes by imposing gauge invariance conditions and dimensional reduction appropriately on the new discovered graphic expansion of Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes. These relations are also satisfied by color-ordered amplitudes in other theories such as color-scalar theory, bi-scalar theory and nonlinear sigma model (NLSM). As an application of the gauge invariance induced relations, we further prove that the three types of BCJ numerators in NLSM , which are derived from Feynman rules, Abelian Z-theory and Cachazo-He- Yuan formula respectively, produce the same total amplitudes. In other words, the three distinct approaches to NLSM amplitudes are equivalent to each other.

Extended Structures of Planetary Nebulae Detected in H$_{2}$ Emission

We present narrow-band near-infrared images of a sample of 11 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) obtained in the molecular hydrogen (H$_{2}$) 2.122 $μ$m and Br$γ$ 2.166 $μ$m emission lines and the $K_{\rm c}$ 2.218 $μ$m continuum. These images were collected with the Wide-field InfraRed Camera (WIRCam) on the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT); their unprecedented depth and wide field of view allow us to find extended nebular structures in H$_{2}$ emission in several PNe, some of these being the first detection. The nebular morphologies in H$_{2}$ emission are studied in analogy with the optical images, and indication on stellar wind interactions is discussed. In particular, the complete structure of the highly asymmetric halo in NGC6772 is witnessed in H$_{2}$, which strongly suggests interaction with the interstellar medium. Our sample confirms the general correlation between H$_{2}$ emission and the bipolarity of PNe. The knotty/filamentary fine structures of the H$_{2}$ gas are resolved in the inner regions of several ring-like PNe, also confirming the previous argument that H2 emission mostly comes from knots/clumps embedded within fully ionized material at the equatorial regions. Moreover, the deep H$_{2}$ image of the butterfly-shaped Sh1-89, after removal of field stars, clearly reveals a tilted ring structure at the waist. These high-quality CFHT images justify follow-up detailed morpho-kinematic studies that are desired to deduce the true physical structures of a few PNe in the sample.

Squeezed back-to-back correlation of $\bqD^0{\bar \bqD}^0$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the squeezed back-to-back correlation (BBC) of $D^0\!{\bar D}^0$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, using the in-medium mass modification calculated with a self-energy in hot pion gas and the source space-time distributions provided by the viscous hydrodynamic code VISH2+1. It is found that the BBC of $D^0\!{\bar D}^0$ is significant in peripheral Au+Au collisions at the RHIC energy. A possible way to detect the BBC in experiment is presented.
