A molecular line survey of the extreme carbon star CRL 3068 at millimeter wavelengths

We present the results of a molecular line survey of the extreme carbon star CRL 3068. The observations were carried out with the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) 12m telescope and the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) at the 2mm and 1.3mm atmospheric windows. The observations cover the frequency bands from 130--162 GHz and 219.5--267.5 GHz. The typical sensitivities achieved are T_R<15 mK and T_R<7 mK for the ARO 12m and SMT, respectively. Seventy two individual emission features belonging to 23 molecular species and isotopologues were detected. Only three faint lines remain unidentified. The species c-C3H, CH3CN, SiC2, and the isotopologues, C17O and C18O, HC15N, HN13C, C33S, C34S, 13CS, 29SiS, and 30SiS are detected in this object for the first time. Rotational diagram analysis is carried out to determine the column densities and excitation temperatures. The isotopic ratios of the elements C, N, O, S, and Si have also been estimated. The results are consistent with stellar CNO processing and suggest that CRL 3068 is more carbon rich than IRC+10216 and CIT 6. It is also shown that the chemical composition in CRL 3068 is somewhat different from that in IRC+10216 with a more extensive synthesis of cyclic and long-chain molecules in CRL 3068. The results will provide valuable clues for better understanding circumstellar chemistry.

Quantum Fourier Transform Over Galois Rings

Galois rings are regarded as "building blocks" of a finite commutative ring with identity. There have been many papers on classical error correction codes over Galois rings published. As an important warm-up before exploring quantum algorithms and quantum error correction codes over Galois rings, we study the quantum Fourier transform (QFT) over Galois rings and prove it can be efficiently preformed on a quantum computer. The properties of the QFT over Galois rings lead to the quantum algorithm for hidden linear structures over Galois rings.

Fast Amplification of QMA

Given a verifier circuit for a problem in QMA, we show how to exponentially amplify the gap between its acceptance probabilities in the `yes' and `no' cases, with a method that is quadratically faster than the procedure given by Marriott and Watrous. Our construction is natively quantum, based on the analogy of a product of two reflections and a quantum walk. Second, in some special cases we show how to amplify the acceptance probability for good witnesses to 1, making a step towards the proof that QMA with one-sided error is equal to QMA. Finally, we simplify the filter-state method to search for QMA witnesses by Poulin and Wocjan.

Optimal quantum repeaters with doubly entangled state purification

Recently, Briegel et al. present a quantum repeaters protocol using nest entanglement purification for long distance quantum communication(Physical Review Letters \textbf{81},5932). In this paper we present a modified scheme for constructing an optimal quantum repeater using doubly entangled photon pairs that overcomes the limitations of quantum communication via noisy channels. Based on the imperfect quantum operations and classical communications, the polarization entangled quantum channels can be built with a better efficiency.

Abstract Error Groups Via Jones Unitary Braid Group Representations at q=i

In this paper, we classify a type of abstract groups by the central products of dihedral groups and quaternion groups. We recognize them as abstract error groups which are often not isomorphic to the Pauli groups in the literature. We show the corresponding nice error bases equivalent to the Pauli error bases modulo phase factors. The extension of these abstract groups by the symmetric group are finite images of the Jones unitary representations (or modulo a phase factor) of the braid group at q=i or r=4. We hope this work can finally lead to new families of quantum error correction codes via the representation theory of the braid group.

First-principles theory of coloration of WO$_3$ upon charge insertion

We report first-principles investigations of the coloration of WO$_3$ upon charge insertion, using sodium tungsten bronze (Na$_x$WO$_3$) as a model system. Our results explain well the systematic color change of Na$_x$WO$_3$ from dark blue to violet, red-orange, and finally to golden-yellow as sodium concentration $x$ increases from 0.3 to unity. Proper accounts for both the interband and the intraband contributions to the optical response are found to be very important for a detailed understanding of the coloration mechanism in this system.

Gate Tunable Dissipation and "Superconductor-Insulator" Transition in Carbon Nanotube Josephson Transistors

Dissipation is ubiquitous in quantum systems, and its interplay with fluctuations is critical to maintaining quantum coherence. We experimentally investigate the dissipation dynamics in single-walled carbon nanotubes coupled to superconductors. The voltage-current characteristics display gate-tunable hysteresis, with sizes that perfectly correlate with the normal state resistance RN, indicating the junction undergoes a periodic modulation between underdamped and overdamped regimes. Surprisingly, when a device's Fermi-level is tuned through a local conductance minimum, we observe a gate-controlled transition from superconducting-like to insulating-like states, with a "critical" R_N value of about 8-20 kohm.

Morpho-Kinematic Properties of the 21-Micron Source IRAS 07134+1005

We report the results of a Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometric observation of 21-micron source IRAS 07134+1005 in the CO J=3-2 line. In order to determine the morpho-kinematic properties of the molecular envelope of the object, we constructed a model using the Shape software to model the observed CO map. We find that the molecular gas component of the envelopes can be interpreted as a geometrically thick expanding torus with an expanding velocity of 8 km/s. The inner and outer radii of the torus determined by fitting Shape models are 1.2" and 3.0", respectively. The inner radius is consistent with the previous values determined by radiative transfer modeling of the spectral energy distribution and mid-infrared imaging of the dust component. The radii and expansion velocity of the torus suggest that the central star has left the asymptotic giant branch about 1140-1710 years ago, and that the duration of the equatorial enhanced mass loss is about 2560-3130 years. From the absence of an observed jet, we suggest that the formation of a bipolar outflow may lack behind in time from the creation of the equatorial torus.

A Brownian Energy Depot Model of the Basilar Membrane Oscillation with a Braking Mechanism

High auditory sensitivity, sharp frequency selectivity, and otoacoustic emissions are signatures of active amplification of the cochlea. The human ear can also detect very large amplitude sound without being damaged as long as the exposed time is not too long. The outer hair cells are believed as the best candidate for the active force generator of the mammalian cochlea. In this paper, we propose a new model for the basilar membrane oscillation which successfully describes both the active and the protective mechanisms by employing an energy depot concept and a critical velocity of the basilar membrane. One of the main results is that thermal noise in the absence of external stimulation can be amplified leading to the spontaneous basilar membrane oscillation. The compressive response of the basilar membrane at the characteristic frequency and the dynamic response to the stimulation are consistent with the experimental results as expected. Our model also shows the nonlinear distortion of the response of the basilar membrane.

Active motions of Brownian particles in a generalized energy-depot model

We present a generalized energy-depot model in which the conversion rate of the internal energy into motion can be dependent on the position and the velocity of a particle. When the conversion rate is a general function of the velocity, the active particle exhibits diverse patterns of motion including a braking mechanism and a stepping motion. The phase trajectories of the motion are investigated in a systematic way. With a particular form of the conversion rate dependent on the position and velocity, the particle shows a spontaneous oscillation characterizing a negative stiffness. These types of active behaviors are compared with the similar phenomena observed in biology such as the stepping motion of molecular motors and the amplification in hearing mechanism. Hence, our model can provide a generic understanding of the active motion related to the energy conversion and also a new control mechanism for nano-robots. We also investigate the noise effect, especially on the stepping motion and observe the random walk-like behavior as expected.

A Molecular Line Survey of the Highly Evolved Carbon Star CIT 6

We present a spectral line survey of the C-rich envelope CIT 6 in the 2mm and 1.3mm bands carried out with the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) 12m telescope and the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (SMT). The observations cover the frequency ranges of 131--160 GHz, 219--244 GHz, and 252--268 GHz with typical sensitivity limit of T_R<10 mK. A total of 74 individual emission features are detected, of which 69 are identified to arise from 21 molecular species and isotopologues, with 5 faint lines remaining unidentified. Two new molecules (C4H and CH3CN) and seven new isotopologues (C17O, 29SiC2, 29SiO, 30SiO, 13CS, C33S, and CS) are detected in this object for the first time. The column densities, excitation temperatures, and fractional abundances of the detected molecules are determined using rotation diagram analysis. Comparison of the spectra of CIT 6 to that of IRC+10216 suggests that the spectral properties of CIT 6 are generally consistent with those of IRC+10216. For most of the molecular species, the intensity ratios of the lines detected in the two objects are in good agreement with each other. Nevertheless, there is evidence suggesting enhanced emission from CN and HC3N and depleted emission from HCN, SiS, and C4H in CIT 6. Based on their far-IR spectra, we find that CIT 6 probably has a lower dust-to-molecular gas ratio than IRC+10216. To investigate the chemical evolution of evolved stars, we compare the molecular abundances in the AGB envelopes CIT 6 and IRC+10216 and those in the bright proto-planetary nebula CRL 618. The implication on the circumstellar chemistry is discussed.

Emission line profiles as a probe of physical conditions in planetary nebulae

We present an analysis of physical conditions in planetary nebulae (PNe) in terms of collisionally-excited line (CEL) and optical-recombination line (ORL) profiles. We aim to investigate whether line profiles could be used to study the long-standing CEL/ORL abundance-discrepancy problem in nebular astrophysics. Using 1D photoionization models and their assumed velocity fields, we simulate the line profiles of various ionic species. We attempt to use our model to account for the observed CEL and ORL profiles. As a case study we present a detailed study of line profiles of the low-excitation planetary nebula (PN) IC 418. Our results show that the profiles of classical temperature and density diagnostic lines, such as [O III] 4363,5007, [S II] 6716,6731, and [Ar IV] 4711,4740, provide a powerful tool to study nebular temperature and density variations. The method enables the CEL/ORL abundance-discrepancy problem to be studied more rigorously than before. A pure photoionization model of a chemically-homogeneous nebula seems to explain the observed disagreements in the profiles for the [O III] 4363 and the 5007 lines, but cannot account for the differences between the [O III] CELs and the O II ORLs. We also investigate the temperature and density variations in the velocity space of a sample of PNe, which are found to be insignificant.

Braid Group, Temperley--Lieb Algebra, and Quantum Information and Computation

In this paper, we explore algebraic structures and low dimensional topology underlying quantum information and computation. We revisit quantum teleportation from the perspective of the braid group, the symmetric group and the virtual braid group, and propose the braid teleportation, the teleportation swapping and the virtual braid teleportation, respectively. Besides, we present a physical interpretation for the braid teleportation and explain it as a sort of crossed measurement. On the other hand, we propose the extended Temperley--Lieb diagrammatical approach to various topics including quantum teleportation, entanglement swapping, universal quantum computation, quantum information flow, and etc. The extended Temperley--Lieb diagrammatical rules are devised to present a diagrammatical representation for the extended Temperley--Lieb category which is the collection of all the Temperley--Lieb algebras with local unitary transformations. In this approach, various descriptions of quantum teleportation are unified in a diagrammatical sense, universal quantum computation is performed with the help of topological-like features, and quantum information flow is recast in a correct formulation. In other words, we propose the extended Temperley--Lieb category as a mathematical framework to describe quantum information and computation involving maximally entangled states and local unitary transformations.

A spectral line survey of NGC 7027 at millimeter wavelengths

We report on a recent spectral line survey of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 7027 using the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) 12m telescope and the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) at millimeter wavelengths. The spectra covering the frequency ranges 71--111GHz, 157--161GHz, and 218--267GHz were obtained with a typical sensitivity of rms<8mK. A total of 67 spectral lines are detected, 21 of which are identified with 8 molecular species, 32 with recombination lines from hydrogen and helium, and 14 remains unidentified. As the widths of emission lines from CO, other neutral molecules, molecular ions, as well as recombination of H+ and He+ are found to be different with each other, the line strengths and profiles are used to investigate the physical conditions and chemical processes of the neutral envelope of NGC 7027. The column densities and fractional abundances relative to H2 of the observed molecular species are calculated and compared with predictions from chemical models. We found evidence for overabundance of N2H+ and underabundance of CS and HNC in NGC 7027, suggesting that X-ray emission and shock wave may play an important role in the chemistry of the hot molecular envelope of the young PN.

Resultant pressure distribution pattern along the basilar membrane in the spiral shaped cochlea

Cochlea is an important auditory organ in the inner ear. In most mammals, it is coiled as a spiral. Whether this specific shape influences hearing is still an open problem. By employing a three dimensional fluid model of the cochlea with an idealized geometry, the influence of the spiral geometry of the cochlea is examined. We obtain solutions of the model through a conformal transformation in a long-wave approximation. Our results show that the net pressure acting on the basilar membrane is not uniform along its spanwise direction. Also, it is shown that the location of the maximum of the spanwise pressure difference in the axial direction has a mode dependence. In the simplest pattern, the present result is consistent with the previous theory based on the WKB-like approximation [D. Manoussaki, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 088701(2006)]. In this mode, the pressure difference in the spanwise direction is a monotonic function of the distance from the apex and the normal velocity across the channel width is zero. Thus in the lowest order approximation, we can neglect the existance of the Reissner's membrane in the upper channel. However, higher responsive modes show different behavior and, thus, the real maximum is expected to be located not exactly at the apex, but at a position determined by the spiral geometry of the cochlea and the width of the cochlear duct. In these modes, the spanwise normal velocities are not zero. Thus, it indicates that one should take into account of the detailed geometry of the cochlear duct for a more quantitative result. The present result clearly demonstrates that not only the spiral geometry, but also the geometry of the cochlear duct play decisive roles in distributing the wave energy.

Quantum Error Correction Code in the Hamiltonian Formulation

The Hamiltonian model of quantum error correction code in the literature is often constructed with the help of its stabilizer formalism. But there have been many known examples of nonadditive codes which are beyond the standard quantum error correction theory using the stabilizer formalism. In this paper, we suggest the other type of Hamiltonian formalism for quantum error correction code without involving the stabilizer formalism, and explain it by studying the Shor nine-qubit code and its generalization. In this Hamiltonian formulation, the unitary evolution operator at a specific time is a unitary basis transformation matrix from the product basis to the quantum error correction code. This basis transformation matrix acts as an entangling quantum operator transforming a separate state to an entangled one, and hence the entanglement nature of the quantum error correction code can be explicitly shown up. Furthermore, as it forms a unitary representation of the Artin braid group, the quantum error correction code can be described by a braiding operator. Moreover, as the unitary evolution operator is a solution of the quantum Yang--Baxter equation, the corresponding Hamiltonian model can be explained as an integrable model in the Yang--Baxter theory. On the other hand, we generalize the Shor nine-qubit code and articulate a topic called quantum error correction codes using Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states to yield new nonadditive codes and channel-adapted codes.

Independent Emission and Absorption Abundances for Planetary Nebulae

Emission-line abundances have been uncertain for more than a decade due to unexplained discrepancies in the relative intensities of the forbidden lines and weak permitted recombination lines in planetary nebulae (PNe) and H II regions. The observed intensities of forbidden and recombination lines originating from the same parent ion differ from their theoretical values by factors of more than an order of magnitude in some of these nebulae. In this study we observe UV resonance line absorption in the central stars of PNe produced by the nebular gas, and from the same ions that emit optical forbidden lines. We then compare the derived absorption column densities with the emission measures determined from ground-based observations of the nebular forbidden lines. We find for our sample of PNe that the collisionally excited forbidden lines yield column densities that are in basic agreement with the column densities derived for the same ions from the UV absorption lines. A similar comparison involving recombination line column densities produces poorer agreement, although near the limits of the formal uncertainties of the analyses. An additional sample of objects with larger abundance discrepancy factors will need to be studied before a stronger statement can be made that recombination line abundances are not correct.

Topological-Like Features in Diagrammatical Quantum Circuits

In this paper, we revisit topological-like features in the extended Temperley--Lieb diagrammatical representation for quantum circuits including the teleportation, dense coding and entanglement swapping. We perform these quantum circuits and derive characteristic equations for them with the help of topological-like operations. Furthermore, we comment on known diagrammatical approaches to quantum information phenomena from the perspectives of both tensor categories and topological quantum field theories. Moreover, we remark on the proposal for categorical quantum physics and information to be described by dagger ribbon categories.
