The Large Magellanic Cloud's $\sim30$ Kiloparsec Bow Shock and its Impact on the Circumgalactic Medium

The interaction between the supersonic motion of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM) is expected to result in a bow shock that leads the LMC's gaseous disk. In this letter, we use hydrodynamic simulations of the LMC's recent infall to predict the extent of this shock and its effect on the Milky Way's (MW) CGM. The simulations clearly predict the existence of an asymmetric shock with a present day stand-off radius of $\sim6.7$ kpc and a transverse diameter of $\sim30$ kpc. Over the past 500 Myr, $\sim8\%$ of the MW's CGM in the southern hemisphere should have interacted with the shock front. This interaction may have had the effect of smoothing over inhomogeneities and increasing mixing in the MW CGM. We find observational evidence of the existence of the bow shock in recent $Hα$ maps of the LMC, providing a potential explanation for the envelope of ionized gas surrounding the LMC. Furthermore, the interaction of the bow shock with the MW CGM may also explain observations of ionized gas surrounding the Magellanic Stream. Using recent orbital histories of MW satellites, we find that many satellites have likely interacted with the LMC shock. Additionally, the dwarf galaxy Ret2 is currently sitting inside the shock, which may impact the interpretation of reported gamma ray excess in Ret2. This work highlights bow shocks associated with infalling satellites are an under-explored, yet potentially very important dynamical mixing process in the circumgalactic and intracluster media.

Gigahertz-rate-switchable wavefront shaping through integration of metasurfaces with photonic integrated circuit

Achieving spatiotemporal control of light at high-speeds presents immense possibilities for various applications in communication, computation, metrology, and sensing. The integration of subwavelength metasurfaces and optical waveguides offers a promising approach to manipulate light across multiple degrees of freedom at high-speed in compact photonic integrated circuit (PICs) devices. Here, we demonstrate a gigahertz-rate-switchable wavefront shaping by integrating metasurface, lithium niobite on insulator (LNOI) photonic waveguide and electrodes within a PIC device. As proofs of concept, we showcase the generation of a focus beam with reconfigurable arbitrary polarizations, switchable focusing with lateral focal positions and focal length, orbital angular momentum light beams (OAMs) as well as Bessel beams. Our measurements indicate modulation speeds of up to gigahertz rate. This integrated platform offers a versatile and efficient means of controlling light field at high-speed within a compact system, paving the way for potential applications in optical communication, computation, sensing, and imaging.

A Comprehensive Investigation of Metals in the Circumgalactic Medium of Nearby Dwarf Galaxies

Dwarf galaxies are found to have lost most of their metals via feedback processes; however, there still lacks consistent assessment on the retention rate of metals in their circumgalactic medium (CGM). Here we investigate the metal content in the CGM of 45 isolated dwarf galaxies with $M_*=10^{6.5-9.5}~M_\odot$ ($M_{\rm 200m}=10^{10.0-11.5}~M_\odot$) using {\it HST}/COS. While H I (Ly$α$) is ubiquitously detected ($89\%$) within the CGM, we find low detection rates ($\approx5\%-22\%$) in C II, C IV, Si II, Si III, and Si IV, largely consistent with literature values. Assuming these ions form in the cool ($T\approx10^4$ K) CGM with photoionization equilibrium, the observed H I and metal column density profiles can be best explained by an empirical model with low gas density and high volume filling factor. For a typical galaxy with $M_{\rm 200m}=10^{10.9}~M_\odot$ (median of the sample), our model predicts a cool gas mass of $M_{\rm CGM,cool}\sim10^{8.4}~M_\odot$, corresponding to $\sim2\%$ of the galaxy's baryonic budget. Assuming a metallicity of $0.3Z_\odot$, we estimate that the dwarf galaxy's cool CGM likely harbors $\sim10\%$ of the metals ever produced, with the rest either in more ionized states in the CGM or transported to the intergalactic medium. We further examine the EAGLE simulation and show that H I and low ions may arise from a dense cool medium, while C IV arises from a diffuse warmer medium. Our work provides the community with a uniform dataset on dwarf galaxies' CGM that combines our recent observations, additional archival data and literature compilation, which can be used to test various theoretical models of dwarf galaxies.

ChatGPT for Teaching and Learning: An Experience from Data Science Education

ChatGPT, an implementation and application of large language models, has gained significant popularity since its initial release. Researchers have been exploring ways to harness the practical benefits of ChatGPT in real-world scenarios. Educational researchers have investigated its potential in various subjects, e.g., programming, mathematics, finance, clinical decision support, etc. However, there has been limited attention given to its application in data science education. This paper aims to bridge that gap by utilizing ChatGPT in a data science course, gathering perspectives from students, and presenting our experiences and feedback on using ChatGPT for teaching and learning in data science education. The findings not only distinguish data science education from other disciplines but also uncover new opportunities and challenges associated with incorporating ChatGPT into the data science curriculum.

Charge-changing cross section measurements of 300 MeV/nucleon $^{28}$Si on carbon and data analysis

Charge-changing cross section ($σ_{\text{cc}}$) measurements via the transmission method have made important progress recently aiming to determine the charge radii of exotic nuclei. In this work, we report a new $σ_{\text{cc}}$ measurement of 304(9) MeV/nucleon $^{28}$Si on carbon at the second Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou (RIBLL2) and describe the data analysis procedure in detail. This procedure is essential to evaluate the systematic uncertainty in the transmission method. The determined $σ_{\mathrm{cc}}$ of 1125(11) mb is found to be consistent with the existing data at similar energies. The present work will serve as a reference in the $σ_{\text{cc}}$ determinations at RIBLL2.

Hybrid Multi-Criteria Preference Ranking by Subsorting

Multi-criteria recommender systems can improve the quality of recommendations by considering user preferences on multiple criteria. One promising approach proposed recently is multi-criteria ranking, which uses Pareto ranking to assign a ranking score based on the dominance relationship between predicted ratings across criteria. However, applying Pareto ranking to all criteria may result in non-differentiable ranking scores. To alleviate this issue, we proposed a hybrid multi-criteria ranking method by using subsorting. More specifically, we utilize one ranking method as the major sorting approach, while we apply another preference ordering method as subsorting. Our experimental results on the OpenTable and Yahoo!Movies data present the advantages of this hybrid ranking approach. In addition, the experiments also reveal more insights about the sustainability of the multi-criteria ranking for top-N item recommendations.

Multi-Objective Recommendations: A Tutorial

Recommender systems (RecSys) have been well developed to assist user decision making. Traditional RecSys usually optimize a single objective (e.g., rating prediction errors or ranking quality) in the model. There is an emerging demand in multi-objective optimization recently in RecSys, especially in the area of multi-stakeholder and multi-task recommender systems. This article provides an overview of multi-objective recommendations, followed by the discussions with case studies. The document is considered as a supplementary material for our tutorial on multi-objective recommendations at ACM SIGKDD 2021.

Electro-optically programmable photonic circuits enabled by wafer-scale integration on thin-film lithium niobate

Programmable photonic circuits performing universal linear-optical transformations underpin vital functions in photonic quantum information processing, quantum-enhanced sensor networks, machine learning and many other intriguing applications. Recent advances in photonic integrated circuits facilitate monolithic integration of externally controlled Mach-Zehnder interferometers which can implement arbitrary unitary transformation on a large number of input/output modes. In this work, we demonstrate a 4x4 programmable linear photonic circuit on lithium niobate on insulator platform employing fast, power-efficient and low-loss electro-optical phase shifters, showing enormous advantages in terms of configuration rate and power consumption. Our device is capable of fast switching with 500 ps rise time and 1.7 ns fall time, and possesses a total on-chip power dissipation of only 0.015 mW when operated at 1 MHz modulation, and an insertion loss of 0.15 dB for each modulator and an on-chip extinction ratio of -34 dB for both cross and bar routes.

ITM-Rec: An Open Data Set for Educational Recommender Systems

With the development of recommender systems (RS), several promising systems have emerged, such as context-aware RS, multi-criteria RS, and group RS. However, the education domain may not benefit from these developments due to missing information, such as contexts and multiple criteria, in educational data sets. In this paper, we announce and release an open data set for educational recommender systems. This data set includes not only traditional rating entries, but also enriched information, e.g., contexts, user preferences in multiple criteria, group compositions and preferences, etc. It provides a testbed and enables more opportunities to develop and examine various educational recommender systems.

New measurement of the elemental fragmentation cross sections of 218 MeV/nucleon 28 Si on a carbon target

Elemental fragmentation cross sections (EFCSs) of stable and unstable nuclides have been investigated with various projectile-target combinations at a wide range of incident energies. These data are critical to constrain and develop the theoretical reaction models and to study the propagation of galactic cosmic rays (GCR). In this work, we present a new EFCS measurement for $^{28}$Si on carbon at 218~MeV/nucleon performed at the Heavy Ion Research Facility (HIRFL-CSR) complex in Lanzhou. The impact of the target thickness has been well corrected to derive an accurate EFCS. Our present results with charge changes $ΔZ$ = 1-6 are compared to the previous measurements and to the predictions from the models modified EPAX2, EPAX3, FRACS, ABRABLA07, NUCFRG2, and IQMD coupled with GEMINI (IQMD+GEMINI). All the models fail to describe the odd-even staggering strength in the elemental distribution, with the exception of the IQMD+GEMINI model, which can reproduce the EFCSs with an accuracy of better than 3.5\% for $ΔZ\leq5$. The IQMD+GEMINI analysis shows that the odd-even staggering in EFCSs occurs in the sequential statistical decay stage rather than in the initial dynamical collision stage. This offers a reasonable approach to understand the underlying mechanism of fragmentation reactions.

Improving procedure for the reconstruction of an effective secular equation

The usual implement procedure for the reconstruction of secular equation for an effective Hamiltonian has been discussed and improved. A relative characteristic polynomial has been introduced for the effective Hamiltonian, to obtain a simplified effective-secular-equation which is equivalent to the one obtained in the usual reconstruction procedure but shows great convenience and effectiveness, especially when the $P$-space dimension is large.

Answer to the comment on "On the characteristic polynomial of an effective Hamiltonian''

In a recent comment by Fernández, it has been argued that our solution method of an effective Hamiltonian based on the characteristic polynomial [Phys. Lett. A 443 (2022) 128215] had been developed several years earlier by Fried and Ezra [J. Chem. Phys. 90 (1989) 6378]. We show here several important differences between our treatment and the resummation method proposed previously by Fried and Ezra.

Oscillating charge currents of one-dimensional Hubbard model in an electric field

The time evolution properties of charge current for the one-dimensional Hubbard model in an electric field have been studied in a rigorous manner. We find that there is a complete and orthonormal set of time-evolution states for which the charge current can only keep zero or oscillate constantly, differing from the possible picture of damped or over-damped Bloch oscillations due to strong correlations. It is also found that, associated with these states, there is a set of constant phase factors, which are uniquely determined and are very useful on discussing the long-time evolution behaviors of the system.

Turbulence in Milky Way Star-Forming Regions Traced by Young Stars and Gas

The interstellar medium (ISM) is turbulent on all scales and in all phases. In this paper, we study turbulence with different tracers in four nearby star-forming regions: Orion, Ophiuchus, Perseus, and Taurus. We combine the APOGEE-2 and Gaia surveys to obtain the full 6-dimensional measurements of positions and velocities of young stars in these regions. The velocity structure functions (VSFs) of the stars show a universal scaling of turbulence. We also obtain Hα gas kinematics in these four regions from the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper. The VSFs of the Hα are more diverse compared to the stars. In regions with recent supernova activities, they show characteristics of local energy injections and higher amplitudes compared to the VSFs of stars and of CO from the literature. Such difference in amplitude of the VSFs can be explained by the different energy and momentum transport from supernovae into different phases of the ISM, thus resulting in higher levels of turbulence in the warm ionized phase traced by Hα. In regions without recent supernova activities, the VSFs of young stars, Hα, and CO are generally consistent, indicating well-coupled turbulence between different phases. Within individual regions, the brighter parts of the Hα gas tend to have a higher level of turbulence than the low-emission parts. Our findings support a complex picture of the Milky Way ISM, where turbulence can be driven at different scales and inject energy unevenly into different phases.

On the characteristic polynomial of an effective Hamiltonian

The characteristic polynomial of the effective Hamiltonian for a general model has been discussed. It is found that, compared with the associated energy eigenvalues, this characteristic polynomial generally has better analytical properties and larger convergence radius when being expanded in powers of the interaction parameter, and hence is more suitable for a perturbation calculation. A form of effective Hamiltonian which has the same singularities (branch points) as such characteristic polynomial has also been constructed.

Integrated thin-film lithium niobate (LN) electro-optic (EO) modulators of broad bandwidth, low insertion loss, low cost and high production rate are essential elements in contemporary inter-connection industries and disruptive applications. Here, we demonstrated the design and fabri-cation of a high performance thin-film LN EO modulator using photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE) technology. Our device shows a 3-dB bandwidth over 50 GHz, along with a comparable low half wave voltage-length product of 2.16 Vcm. We obtain a fiber-to-fiber insertion loss of 2.6 dB.

The QuaStar Survey: Detecting Hidden Low-Velocity Gas in the Milky Way's Circumgalactic Medium

From our position embedded within the Milky Way's interstellar medium (ISM), we have limited ability to detect gas at low relative velocities in the extended Galactic halo because those spectral lines are blended with much stronger signals from dense foreground gas. As a result, the content of the Milky Way's circumgalactic medium (CGM) is poorly constrained at $|v_{\rm LSR}|$ $\lesssim$ 150 km s$^{-1}$. To overcome this complication, the QuaStar Survey applies a spectral differencing technique using paired quasar-star sightlines to measure the obscured content of the Milky Way's CGM for the first time. We present measurements of the CIV doublet ($λλ$ 1548 Å, 1550 Å), a rest-frame UV metal line transition detected in HST/COS spectra of 30 halo-star/quasar pairs evenly distributed across the sky at Galactic latitudes $|b|>30^\circ$. The 30 halo stars have well-constrained distances (d$\approx$5-14 kpc), and are paired with quasars separated by $<$ 2.8$^\circ$. We argue that the difference in absorption between the quasar and stellar sightlines originates primarily in the Milky Way's extended CGM beyond $\sim$10 kpc. For the Milky Way's extended, low velocity CGM ($|v|<$150 km/s), we place an upper limit on the mean CIV column density of $\rm ΔlogN_{LVCGM} < 13.39$ and find a covering fraction of $f_{\rm CIV,LVCGM} (\rm logN>13.65)=$ 20% [6/30], a value significantly lower than the covering fraction for star-forming galaxies at low redshift. Our results suggest either that the bulk of Milky Way's CIV-traced CGM lies at low Galactic latitudes, or that the Milky Way's CGM is lacking in warm, ionized material compared to low-redshift ($z < 0.1$) star-forming galaxy halos.
