Dark matter search in dwarf irregular galaxies with ten years of data from the IceCube neutrino observatory

Dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs), as rotationally-supported systems, have more reliable J-factor measurements than dwarf spheroidal galaxies and have received attention as targets for dark matter detection in recent years. In this paper, we use 10 years of IceCube muon-track data and an unbinned maximum-likelihood-ratio method to search for neutrino signals beyond the background from the directions of 7 dIrrs, aiming to detect neutrinos produced by heavy annihilation dark matter. We do not detect any significant signal. Based on such null results, we calculate the upper limits on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross section for 1 TeV - 10 PeV dark matter. Our limits, although weaker than the strictest constraints in the literature in this mass range, are also a good complement to the existing results considering the more reliable J-factor measurements of dIrrs.

Searching for dark-matter induced neutrino signals in dwarf spheroidal galaxies using 10 years of IceCube public data

This study searches for neutrino signals from 18 dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) using 10 years of publicly available muon-track data of the IceCube neutrino observatory. We apply an unbinned likelihood analysis on each of these dSphs to derive the significance the putative neutrino emission. To further enhance our sensitivity, we also stack all dSphs together to perform a joint analysis. However, no significant neutrino emission signal was detected in either the single-source or stacking analysis. Based on these null results, we derive constraints on the annihilation cross section of dark matter particles. Compared to the existing literature, our constraints via the channel $χχ\rightarrowμ^+μ^-$ are comparable to the ones from the VERITAS observations of dSphs.

Discrimination of pp solar neutrinos and $^{14}$C double pile-up events in a large-scale LS detector

As a unique probe, precision measurement of \textit{pp} solar neutrinos is important for studying the Sun's energy mechanism, monitoring thermodynamic equilibrium, and studying neutrino oscillation in the vacuum-dominated region. For a large-scale liquid scintillator detector, one bottleneck for \textit{pp} solar neutrino detection comes from pile-up events of intrinsic $^{14}$C decays. This paper presents a few approaches to discriminate \textit{pp} solar neutrinos and $^{14}$C pile-up events by considering the difference in their time and spatial distributions. In this work, a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation is constructed. Then multivariate analysis and deep learning technology were adopted respectively to investigate the capability of $^{14}$C pile-up reduction. As a result, the BDTG model and VGG network showed good performance in discriminating \textit{pp} solar neutrinos and $^{14}$C double pile-up events. Their signal significance can achieve 10.3 and 15.6 using only one day of statistics. In this case, the signal efficiency is 51.1\% for discrimination using the BDTG model when rejecting 99.18\% $^{14}$C double pile-up events, and the signal efficiency is 42.7\% for the case using the VGG network when rejecting 99.81\% $^{14}$C double pile-up events.

Reconstruction of Muon Bundle in the JUNO Central Detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment. One of the main goals is to determine the neutrino mass ordering by precisely measuring the energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos. For reactor antineutrino detection, cosmogenic backgrounds such as $^9$Li/$^8$He and fast neutrons induced by cosmic muons should be rejected carefully by applying muon veto cuts, which requires good muon track reconstruction. With a 20~kton liquid scintillator detector, simulation shows the proportion of muon bundles to be around 8\% in the JUNO, while its reconstruction is rarely discussed in previous experiments. According to the charge response of the PMT array, this paper proposes an efficient algorithm for muon bundle track reconstruction. This is the first reconstruction of muon bundles in a large volume liquid scintillator detector. Additionally, the algorithm shows good performance and potential in reconstruction for both single muon and double muons. The spatial resolution of single muon reconstruction is 20~cm and the angular resolution is $0.5^\circ$. As for double muon reconstruction, the spatial resolution and angular resolution could be 30~cm and $1.0^\circ$, respectively. Moreover, this paper has also discussed muon classification and veto strategy.
