Proton charge radius from a dispersive analysis of the experimental data over the space- and time-like regions

We present a dispersion theoretical analysis of the experimental data on the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon covering both the space- and time-like regions. The nucleon form factors over the full range of momentum transfers and the nucleon radius are extracted with high precision. The statistical uncertainties of the extracted form factors and radius are estimated using the bootstrap method, while systematic errors are determined from variations of the spectral functions. For the proton charge radius, we find $r_E^p = 0.840^{+0.003}_{-0.002}{}^{+0.002}_{-0.002}$~fm, in line with previous analyses of spacelike data alone and also the muonic Lamb shift determination.

Radiative corrections to elastic muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfers

We systematically calculate the radiative corrections of order $α/π$ to elastic muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfers. These include vacuum polarization, photon-loop form factors of the muon and the proton, two-photon exchange corrections and soft photon radiation. In particular, we discuss these corrections for the kinematics of the upcomimg AMBER experiment with a $100\,$GeV muon beam energy. It is found that for the ratio to the Born cross section, only the minor terms from the photon-loop form factors of the proton and two-photon exchange depend on the proton structure predetermined by the strong interactions. Since a prominent role among the radiative corrections is played by soft photon radiation, the calculation of the bremsstrahlung process $μp \toμp γ$ should be extended beyond the soft photon approximation and tailored to the specific experimental conditions.

Coupled-channel effects of the $Σ_c^{(*)}\bar{D}^{(*)}$-$Λ_c(2595)\bar{D}$ system and molecular nature of the $P_c$ pentaquark states from one-boson exchange model

The effects of the $Σ_c\bar{D}^*$-$Λ_{c}(2595)\bar{D}$ coupled-channel dynamics and various one-boson-exchange (OBE) forces for the LHCb pentaquark states, $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$, are reinvestigated. Both the pion and $ρ$-meson exchanges are considered for the $Σ_c\bar{D}^*$-$Λ_{c}(2595)\bar{D}$ coupled-channel dynamics. It is found that the role of the $Λ_{c}(2595)\bar{D}$ channel in the descriptions of the $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ states is not significant with the OBE parameters constrained by other experimental sources. The naive OBE models with the short-distance $δ(\vec{r})$ term of the one-pion exchange (OPE) keep failing to reproduce the $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ states simultaneously. The OPE potential with the full $δ(\vec{r})$ term results in a too large mass splitting for the $J^P=1/2^-$ and $3/2^-$ $Σ_c\bar{D}^*$ bound states with total isospin $I=1/2$. The OBE model with only the OPE $δ(\vec{r})$ term dropped may fit the splitting much better but somewhat underestimates the splitting. Since the $δ(\vec r)$ potential is from short-distance physics, which also contains contributions from the exchange of mesons heavier than those considered explicitly, we vary the strength of the $δ(\vec r)$ potential and find that the masses of the $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$, and $P_c(4457)$ can be reproduced simultaneously with the $δ(\vec r)$ term in the OBE model reduced by about 80\%. While two different spin assignments are possible to produce their masses, in the preferred description, the spin parities of the $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ are $3/2^-$ and $1/2^-$, respectively.

New insights into the nucleon's electromagnetic structure

We present a combined analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in the space- and timelike regions using dispersion theory. Our framework provides a consistent description of the experimental data over the full range of momentum transfer, in line with the strictures from analyticity and unitarity. The statistical uncertainties of the extracted form factors are estimated using the bootstrap method, while systematic errors are determined from variations of the spectral functions. We also perform a high-precision extraction of the nucleon radii and find good agreement with previous analyses of spacelike data alone. For the proton charge radius, we find $r_E^p = 0.840^{+0.003}_{-0.002}{}^{+0.002}_{-0.002}$~fm, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The Zemach radius and third moment are in agreement with Lamb shift measurements and hyperfine splittings. The combined data set of space- and timelike data disfavors a zero crossing of $μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ in the spacelike region. Finally, we discuss the status and perspectives of modulus and phase of the form factors in the timelike region in the context of future experiments as well as the onset of perturbative QCD.

Dispersion-theoretical analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon: Past, present and future

We review the dispersion-theoretical analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon. We emphasize in particular the role of unitarity and analyticity in the construction of the isoscalar and isovector spectral functions. We present new results on the extraction of the nucleon radii, the electric and magnetic form factors and the extraction of $ω$-meson couplings. All this is supplemented by a detailed calculation of the theoretical uncertainties, using bootstrap and Bayesian methods to pin down the statistical errors, while systematic errors are determined from variations of the spectral functions. We also discuss the physics of the time-like form factors and point out further issues to be addressed in this framework.

High-precision determination of the electric and magnetic radius of the proton

Using dispersion theory with an improved description of the two-pion continuum based on the precise Roy-Steiner analysis of pion-nucleon scattering, we analyze recent data from electron-proton scattering. This allows for a high-precision determination of the electric and magnetic radius of the proton, $r_E = (0.838^{+0.005}_{-0.004}{}^{+0.004}_{-0.003})\,$fm and $r_M = (0.847\pm{0.004}\pm{0.004})\,$fm, where the first error refers to the fitting procedure using bootstrap and the data while the second one refers to the systematic uncertainty related to the underlying spectral functions.

Prediction of an exotic state around 4240 MeV with $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ as C-parity partner of Y(4260) in molecular picture

The possibility of the Y(4260) being the molecular state of $D\bar D_1(2420)+\mathrm{c.c.}$ is investigated in the one boson exchange model. It turns out that the potential of $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ state formed by $D\bar D_1(2420)+\mathrm{c.c.}$ is attractive and strong enough to bind them together when the momentum cutoff $Λ\gtrsim 1.4$ GeV. To produce the Y(4260) with correct binding energy, we need $Λ\approx 2.1$ GeV. Besides, $D\bar D_1(2420)+\mathrm{c.c.}$ can also form a state with exotic quantum numbers, $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$, and its potential similar with that of the $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ state. Therefore, an exotic state with mass around 4240 MeV (called $η_{c1}(4240)$) is predicted to exist. Our estimation of the mass of the $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ state in charmonium region is in agreement with those predicted by the chiral quark model and the lattice QCD. The possible decay modes and their relative widths are estimated and the results suggest that this exotic state can be searched for in $ηη_c$ and $ηχ_{c1}$ channels.

Strong decays of the latest LHCb pentaquark candidates in hadronic molecule pictures

We investigate the observed pentaquark candidates $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ from the latest LHCb measurement, as well as four possible spin partners in the $\bar{D}^{(*)}Σ_c^*$ system predicted from the heavy quark spin symmetry with the hadronic molecule scenarios. Similar to the previous calculation on $P_c(4380)$ and $P_c(4450)$, the partial widths of all the allowed decay channels for these $P_c$ states are estimated with the effective Lagrangian method. The cutoff dependence of our numerical results are also presented. Comparing with the experimental widths, our results show that $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ can be described well with the spin-parity-$1/2^-$-$\bar{D}Σ_c$, $1/2^-$-$\bar{D}^*Σ_c$ and $3/2^-$-$\bar{D}^*Σ_c$ molecule pictures, respectively.

Hadronic molecular assignment for the newly observed $Ω^*$ state

Very recently, a new $Ω^{*}$ state was reported by the Belle Collaboration, with its mass of $2012.4 \pm 0.7\ \text{(stat)}\pm 0.6\ \text{(syst)}\ \mathrm{MeV}$, which locates just below the $KΞ^*$ threshold and hence hints to be a possible $KΞ^*$ hadronic molecule. Using the effective Lagrangian approach as the same as our previous works for other possible hadronic molecular states, we investigate the decay behavior of this new $Ω^*$ state within the hadronic molecular picture. The results show that the measured decay width can be reproduced well and its dominant decay channel is predicted to be the $KπΞ$ three-body decay. This suggests that the newly observed $Ω^*$ may be ascribed as the $J^P={3/2}^-$ $KΞ^*$ hadronic molecular state and can be further checked through its $KπΞ$ decay channel.

Decay behavior of the strange and beauty partners of $P_c$ hadronic molecules

We extend our previous study on the decay behavior of $P_c$ hadronic molecules to their strange and beauty partners. While $P_c(4380)$ and $P_c(4450)$ locate just below the $\bar DΣ_c^*$ and $\bar D^*Σ_c$ thresholds, respectively, their proposed strange partners $N(1875)$ and $N(2080)$ sit just below the $KΣ^*$ and $K^*Σ$ thresholds, respectively. Using the effective Lagrangian approach as the same as for the study of $P_c$ hadronic molecular states and with the couplings determined by the $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ flavor symmetry, the decay patterns of $N(1875)$ and $N(2080)$ are obtained assuming them to be the $S$-wave $KΣ^*$ and $K^*Σ$ molecules, respectively. It is found that the measured decay properties of $N(1875)$ and $N(2080)$ are reproduced well. Our results suggest that both $N(1875)$ and $N(2080)$ can be ascribed as the hadronic molecular pentaquark states in the hidden strangeness sector with quantum number $I(J^P)=1/2({3/2}^-)$. Further checks on their hadronic molecule nature by various experiments are proposed. With the same approach, we also give our predictions for the decay behavior of the possible beauty partners of the $P_c$ hadronic molecular states. The $B^*Λ_b$ is found to be the largest decay mode for both $BΣ_b^*$ and $B^*Σ_b$ hadronic molecules, hence can be used to look for the hidden beauty pentaquark states in forthcoming experiments.
