Design and preliminary performance study of the broad-band spectrometer detector for POLAR-2

POLAR-2, the successor of the POLAR experiment aboard China's Tiangong-2 space lab, is set to be deployed on the China Space Station. The POLAR-2 mission aims to conducting high-precision polarization measurements of high-energy transients with a primary focus on Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), following POLAR's pioneering accurate polarization measurements of GRB prompt emission. One of the key advancements in POLAR-2 is the inclusion of a dedicated Broad-band Spectrometer Detector (BSD) instrument, designed to provide precise measurements of GRB location and spectral parameters, which are critical inputs for accurate polarization analysis of POLAR-2's dedicated High-energy Polarimetry Detector (HPD), which is made of plastic scintillator bars array. BSD employs a coded-aperture mask imaging technique and pixelated GAGG scintillation crystals, offering a wide half-coded field of view of ~132° x 125° and an operational energy range of 10-1000 keV. Simulation results indicate that the instrument can achieve a localization accuracy of approximately 1.5° for faint GRBs similar to GRB 170817A, satisfying the core requirements of GRB polarimetry with HPD. BSD also has moderate capability for GRB polarimetry, particularly at several hundred keV energy. This paper outlines the preliminary design of BSD and presents an overall evaluation of its expected scientific performance, based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations and preliminary ground-based calibration tests.

Design and characterization of W-band and D-band calibration sources for the AliCPT-1 experiment

Ali Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Telescope (AliCPT-1) is the first Chinese cosmic microwave background experiment aiming to make sensitive polarization maps of the potential B-mode signal from inflationary gravitational waves. The telescope was deployed on the Tibet Ali site at 5250 m above sea level in early 2025. Before and after each observation season, the instrument performance must be carefully calibrated, including the far field beam performance, far sidelobe, spectral response, polarization angle, and cross-polar beam response. To characterize these optical performances, several calibrators have been developed. We developed a W-band source and a D-band source for the AliCPT-1 telescope's beam characterizations. We present the design and performance of the two calibration sources.

Gamma-Ray Polarimetry of the Crab Pulsar Observed by POLAR

The X/$γ$ ray polarimetry of the Crab pulsar/nebula is believed to hold crucial information on their emission models. In the past, several missions have shown evidence of polarized emission from the Crab. The significance of these measurements remains however limited. New measurements are therefore required. POLAR is a wide Field of View Compton-scattering polarimeter (sensitive in 50-500 keV) onboard the Chinese spacelab Tiangong-2 which took data from September 2016 to April 2017. Although not designed to perform polarization measurements of pulsars, we present here a novel method which can be applied to POLAR as well as that of other wide Field of View polarimeters. The novel polarimetric joint-fitting method for the Crab pulsar observations with POLAR, allows us to obtain constraining measurements of the pulsar component. The best fitted values and corresponding 1$σ$ deviations for the averaged phase interval: (PD=$14\substack{+15 \\ -10}$\%, PA=$108\substack{+33 \\ -54} ^{\circ}$), for Peak 1: (PD=$17\substack{+18 \\ -12}$\%, PA=$174\substack{+39 \\ -36} ^{\circ}$) and for Peak 2: (PD=$16\substack{+16 \\ -11}$\%, PA=$78\substack{+39 \\ -30} ^{\circ}$). Further more, the 3$σ$ upper limits on the polarization degree are for the averaged phase interval (55\%), Peak 1 (66\%) and Peak 2 (57\%). Finally, to illustrate the capabilities of this method in the future, we simulated two years observation to the Crab pulsar with POLAR-2. The results show that POLAR-2 is able to confirm the emission to be polarized with $5σ$ and $4σ$ confidence level if the Crab pulsar is polarized at $20\%$ and $10\%$ respectively.

Comparison of proton shower developments in the BGO calorimeter of the Dark Matter Particle Explorer between GEANT4 and FLUKA simulations

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a satellite-borne detector for high-energy cosmic rays and $γ$-rays. To fully understand the detector performance and obtain reliable physical results, extensive simulations of the detector are necessary. The simulations are particularly important for the data analysis of cosmic ray nuclei, which relies closely on the hadronic and nuclear interactions of particles in the detector material. Widely adopted simulation softwares include the GEANT4 and FLUKA, both of which have been implemented for the DAMPE simulation tool. Here we describe the simulation tool of DAMPE and compare the results of proton shower properties in the calorimeter from the two simulation softwares. Such a comparison gives an estimate of the most significant uncertainties of our proton spectral analysis.

The POLAR Gamma-Ray Burst Polarization Catalog

Despite over 50 years of research, many open questions remain about the origin and nature of GRBs. Polarization measurements of the prompt emission of these extreme phenomena have long been thought to be the key to answering a range of these questions. The POLAR detector was designed to produce the first set of detailed and reliable polarization measurements in an energy range of approximately 50-500 keV. During late 2016 and early 2017, POLAR detected a total of 55 GRBs. Analysis results of 5 of these GRBs have been reported in the past. The results were found to be consistent with a low or unpolarized flux. However, previous reports by other collaborations found high levels of polarization. We study the polarization for all the 14 GRBs observed by POLAR for which statistically robust inferences are possible. Additionally, time-resolved polarization studies are performed on GRBs with sufficient apparent flux. A publicly available polarization analysis tool, developed within the 3ML framework, was used to produce statistically robust results. The method allows to combine spectral and polarimetric data from POLAR with spectral data from the Fermi GBM and Swift-BAT to jointly model the spectral and polarimetric parameters. The time integrated analysis finds all results to be compatible with a low or zero polarization with the caveat that, when time-resolved analysis is possible within individual pulses, we observe moderate polarization with a rapidly changing polarization angle. Thus, time-integrated polarization results, while pointing to lower polarization are potentially an artifact of summing over the changing polarization signal and thus, washing out the true moderate polarization. Therefore, we caution against over interpretation of any time-integrated results and encourage one to wait for more detailed polarization measurements from forthcoming missions such as POLAR-2 and LEAP.

Implications on the origin of cosmic rays in light of 10 TV spectral softenings

Precise measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic rays (CRs) show various kinds of features deviating from single power-laws, which give very interesting and important implications on their origin and propagation. Previous measurements from a few balloon and space experiments indicate the existence of spectral softenings around 10 TV for protons (and probably also for Helium nuclei). Very recently, the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) measurement about the proton spectrum clearly reveals such a softening with a high significance. Here we study the implications of these new measurements, as well as the groundbased indirect measurements, on the origin of CRs. We find that a single component of CRs fails to fit the spectral softening and the air shower experiment data simultaneously. In the framework of multiple components, we discuss two possible scenarios, the multiple source population scenario and the background plus nearby source scenario. Both scenarios give reasonable fits to the wide-band data from TeV to 100 PeV energies. Considering the anisotropy observations, the nearby source model is favored.

Phase-resolved gamma-ray spectroscopy of the Crab pulsar observed by POLAR

The POLAR detector is a space based Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) polarimeter sensitive in the 15-500 keV energy range. Apart from its main scientific goal as a Gamma-Ray Burst polarimeter it is also able to detect photons from pulsars in orbit. By using the six-months in-orbit observation data, significant pulsation from the PSR B0531+21 (Crab pulsar) was obtained. In this work, we present the precise timing analysis of the Crab pulsar, together with a phase-resolved spectroscopic study using a joint-fitting method adapted for wide field of view instruments like POLAR. By using single power law fitting over the pulsed phase, we obtained spectral indices ranging from 1.718 to 2.315, and confirmed the spectral evolution in a reverse S shape which is homogenous with results from other missions over broadband. We will also show, based on the POLAR in-orbit performance and Geant4 Monte-Carlo simulation, the inferred capabilities of POLAR-2, the proposed follow-up mission of POLAR on board the China Space Station (CSS), for pulsars studies.

Observation data pre-processing and scientific data products generation of POLAR

POLAR is a compact space-borne detector initially designed to measure the polarization of hard X-rays emitted from Gamma-Ray Bursts in the energy range 50-500keV. This instrument was launched successfully onboard the Chinese space laboratory Tiangong-2 (TG-2) on 2016 September 15. After being switched on a few days later, tens of gigabytes of raw detection data were produced in-orbit by POLAR and transferred to the ground every day. Before the launch date, a full pipeline and related software were designed and developed for the purpose of quickly pre-processing all the raw data from POLAR, which include both science data and engineering data, then to generate the high level scientific data products that are suitable for later science analysis. This pipeline has been successfully applied for use by the POLAR Science Data Center in the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) after POLAR was launched and switched on. A detailed introduction to the pipeline and some of the core relevant algorithms are presented in this paper.

Detailed polarization measurements of the prompt emission of five Gamma-Ray Bursts

Gamma-ray bursts are the strongest explosions in the Universe since the Big Bang, believed to be produced either in forming black holes at the end of massive star evolution or merging of compact objects. Spectral and timing properties of gamma-ray bursts suggest that the observed bright gamma-rays are produced in the most relativistic jets in the Universe; however, the physical properties, especially the structure and magnetic topologies in the jets are still not well known, despite several decades of studies. It is widely believed that precise measurements of the polarization properties of gamma-ray bursts should provide crucial information on the highly relativistic jets. As a result there have been many reports of gamma-ray burst polarization measurements with diverse results, see, however many such measurements suffered from substantial uncertainties, mostly systematic. After the first successful measurements by the GAP and COSI instruments, here we report a statistically meaningful sample of precise polarization measurements, obtained with the dedicated gamma-ray burst polarimeter, POLAR onboard China's Tiangong-2 spacelab. Our results suggest that the gamma-ray emission is at most polarized at a level lower than some popular models have predicted; although our results also show intrapulse evolution of the polarization angle. This indicates that the low polarization degrees could be due to an evolving polarization angle during a gamma-ray burst.

Calibration of the DAMPE Plastic Scintillator Detector and its on-orbit performance

DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne apparatus for detecting the high-energy cosmic-rays like electrons, $γ$-rays, protons and heavy-ions. Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is the top-most sub-detector of the DAMPE. The PSD is designed to measure the charge of incident high-energy particles and it also serves as a veto detector for discriminating $γ$-rays from charged particles. In this paper, PSD on-orbit calibration procedure is described, which includes five steps of pedestal, dynode correlation, response to minimum-ionizing particles (MIPs), light attenuation function and energy reconstruction. A method for reconstructing the charge of incident high energy cosmic-ray particles is introduced. The detection efficiency of each PSD strip is verified to be above 99.5%, the total efficiency of the PSD for charged particles is above 99.99%.

A Method of Alignment of the Plastic Scintillator Detector of DAMPE

The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) of the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is designed to measure cosmic ray charge (Z) and to act as a veto detector for gamma-ray identification. In order to fully exploit the charge identification potential of the PSD and to enhance its capability to identify the gamma ray events, we develop a PSD detector alignment method. The path length of a given track in the volume of a PSD bar is derived taking into account the shift and rotation alignment corrections. By examining energy spectra of corner-passing events and fully contained events, position shifts and rotations of all PSD bars are obtained, and found to be on average about 1mm and 0.0015 radian respectively. To validate the alignment method, we introduce the artificial shifts and rotations of PSD bars in the detector simulation. These shift and rotation parameters can be recovered successfully by the alignment procedure. As a result of the PSD alignment procedure, the charge resolution of the PSD is improved from $4\%$ to $8\%$ depending on the nuclei.

Probing Primordial Gravitational Waves: Ali CMB Polarization Telescope

In this paper, we will give a general introduction to the project of Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT), which is a Sino-US joint project led by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) and has involved many different institutes in China. It is the first ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization experiment in China and an integral part of China's Gravitational Waves Program. The main scientific goal of AliCPT project is to probe the primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) originated from the very early Universe. The AliCPT project includes two stages. The first stage referred to as AliCPT-1, is to build a telescope in the Ali region of Tibet with an altitude of 5,250 meters. Once completed, it will be the worldwide highest ground-based CMB observatory and open a new window for probing PGWs in northern hemisphere. AliCPT-1 telescope is designed to have about 7,000 TES detectors at 90GHz and 150GHz. The second stage is to have a more sensitive telescope (AliCPT-2) with the number of detectors more than 20,000. Our simulations show that AliCPT will improve the current constraint on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ by one order of magnitude with 3 years' observation. Besides the PGWs, the AliCPT will also enable a precise measurement on the CMB rotation angle and provide a precise test on the CPT symmetry. We show 3 years' observation will improve the current limit by two order of magnitude.

Interpretations of the DAMPE electron data

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a high energy cosmic ray and $γ$-ray detector in space, has recently reported the new measurement of the total electron plus positron flux between 25 GeV and 4.6 TeV. A spectral softening at $\sim0.9$ TeV and a tentative peak at $\sim1.4$ TeV have been reported. We study the physical implications of the DAMPE data in this work. The presence of the spectral break significantly tightens the constraints on the model parameters to explain the electron/positron excesses. The spectral softening can either be explained by the maximum acceleration limits of electrons by astrophysical sources, or a breakdown of the common assumption of continuous distribution of electron sources at TeV energies in space and time. The tentive peak at $\sim1.4$ TeV implies local sources of electrons/positrons with quasi-monochromatic injection spectrum. We find that the cold, ultra-relativistic $e^+e^-$ winds from pulsars may give rise to such a structure. The pulsar is requird to be middle-aged, relatively slowly-rotated, mildly magnetized, and isolated in a density cavity. The annihilation of DM particles ($m_χ\sim1.5$ TeV) into $e^+e^-$ pairs in a nearby clump or an over-density region may also explain the data. In the DM scenario, the inferred clump mass (or density enhancement) is about $10^7-10^8$ M$_\odot$ (or $17-35$ times of the canonical local density) assuming a thermal production cross section, which is relatively extreme compared with the expectation from numerical simulations. A moderate enhancement of the annihilation cross section via, e.g., the Sommerfeld mechanism or non-thermal production, is thus needed.

An empirical behavioural order-driven model with price limit rules

We develop an empirical behavioural order-driven (EBOD) model, which consists of an order placement process and an order cancellation process. Price limit rules are introduced in the definition of relative price. The order placement process is determined by several empirical regularities: the long memory in order directions, the long memory in relative prices, the asymmetric distribution of relative prices, and the nonlinear dependence of the average order size and its standard deviation on the relative price. Order cancellation follows a Poisson process with the arrival rate determined from real data and the cancelled order is determined according to the empirical distributions of relative price level and relative position at the same price level. All these ingredients of the model are derived based on the empirical microscopic regularities in the order flows of stocks on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The model is able to produce the main stylized facts in real markets. Computational experiments uncover that asymmetric setting of price limits will cause the stock price diverging exponentially when the up price limit is higher than the down price limit and vanishing vice versus. We also find that asymmetric price limits have influences on stylized facts. Our EBOD model provides a suitable computational experiment platform for academics, market participants and policy makers.

Temperature dependence of the plastic scintillator detector for DAMPE

The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is one of the main sub-detectors in the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) project. It will be operated over a large temperature range from -$10$ to $30^{\circ}$C, so the temperature effect of the whole detection system should be studied in detail. The temperature dependence of the PSD system is mainly contributed by the three parts: the plastic scintillator bar, the photomultiplier tube (PMT), and the Front End Electronics (FEE). These three parts have been studied in detail and the contribution of each part has been obtained and discussed. The temperature coefficient of the PMT is $-0.320(\pm0.033)\%/^{\circ}$C, and the coefficient of the plastic scintillator bar is $-0.036(\pm0.038)\%/^{\circ}$C. This result means that after subtracting the FEE pedestal, the variation of the signal amplitude of the PMT-scintillator system due to temperature mainly comes from the PMT, and the plastic scintillator bar is not sensitive to temperature over the operating range. Since the temperature effect cannot be ignored, the temperature dependence of the whole PSD has been also studied and a correction has been made to minimize this effect. The correction result shows that the effect of temperature on the signal amplitude of the PSD system can be suppressed.

Stylized facts of price gaps in limit order books: Evidence from Chinese stocks

Price gap, defined as the logarithmic price difference between the first two occupied price levels on the same side of a limit order book (LOB), is a key determinant of market depth, which is one of the dimensions of liquidity. However, the properties of price gaps have not been thoroughly studied due to the less availability of ultrahigh frequency data. In the paper, we rebuild the LOB dynamics based on the order flow data of 26 A-share stocks traded on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2003. Three key empirical statistical properties of price gaps are investigated. We find that the distribution of price gaps has a power-law tail for all stocks with an average tail exponent close to 3.2. Applying modern statistical methods, we confirm that the gap time series are long-range correlated and possess multifractal nature. These three features vary from stock to stock and are not universal. Furthermore, we also unveil buy-sell asymmetry phenomena in the properties of price gaps on the buy and sell sides of the LOBs for individual stocks. These findings deepen our understanding of the dynamics of liquidity of common stocks and can be used to calibrate agent-based computational financial models.

Empirical properties of inter-cancellation durations in the Chinese stock market

Order cancellation process plays a crucial role in the dynamics of price formation in order-driven stock markets and is important in the construction and validation of computational finance models. Based on the order flow data of 18 liquid stocks traded on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2003, we investigate the empirical statistical properties of inter-cancellation durations in units of events defined as the waiting times between two consecutive cancellations. The inter-cancellation durations for both buy and sell orders of all the stocks favor a $q$-exponential distribution when the maximum likelihood estimation method is adopted; In contrast, both cancelled buy orders of 6 stocks and cancelled sell orders of 3 stocks prefer Weibull distribution when the nonlinear least-square estimation is used. Applying detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), centered detrending moving average (CDMA) and multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) methods, we unveil that the inter-cancellation duration time series process long memory and multifractal nature for both buy and sell cancellations of all the stocks. Our findings show that order cancellation processes exhibit long-range correlated bursty behaviors and are thus not Poissonian.

Trading networks, abnormal motifs and stock manipulation

We study trade-based manipulation of stock prices from the perspective of complex trading networks constructed by using detailed information of trades. A stock trading network consists of nodes and directed links, where every trader is a node and a link is formed from one trader to the other if the former sells shares to the latter. Specifically, three abnormal network motifs are investigated, which are found to be formed by a few traders, implying potential intention of price manipulation. We further investigate the dynamics of volatility, trading volume, average trade size and turnover around the transactions associated with the abnormal motifs for large, medium and small trades. It is found that these variables peak at the abnormal events and exhibit a power-law accumulation in the pre-event time period and a power-law relaxation in the post-event period. We also find that the cumulative excess returns are significantly positive after buyer-initiated suspicious trades and exhibit a mild price reversal after seller-initiated suspicious trades. These findings can be better understood in favor of price manipulation. Our work shed new lights into the detection of price manipulation resorting to the abnormal motifs of complex trading networks.
