Impurity scattering in superconductors

We present some of the recent theoretical studies on the impurity effects in conventional superconductors, such as magnetic and ordinary impurity effects in dirty and weak localization limits, and describe successfully unexplained experimental results. We find that the critical sheet resistance for the suppression of superconductivity in thin films depends on superconductor, and point out that impurity dopings in high T_c superconductors cause a metal-insulator transition and thereby suppress T_c.

Pairing in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations

It is shown that the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations pair the electrons in states which are linear combinations of the normal states. Accordingly, the BCS-like reduction procedure is required to choose a correct pairing. For a homogeneous system, we point out that the kernel of the self-consistency equation derived from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations needs to be constrained by the BCS pairing condition. In the presence of ordinary impurities, on the other hand, the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations should be supplemented by Anderson's pairing condition to obtain the correct vacuum state by the corresponding unitary transformation. This results in localization correction to the phonon-mediated interaction.

A Constraint on the Anomalous Green's Function

It is shown that the physical constraint of the Anomalous Green's function gives a natural pairing condition. The resulting self-consistency equation is directly related to the BCS gap equation. Both inhomogeneous and homogeneous systems are considered to illustrate the importance of the constraint. Especially we find weak localization correction to the phonon-mediated interaction.

Strong coupling theory of impure superconductors : real space formalism

In the electron-phonon model, the influence of nonmagnetic impurities on the transition temperature of superconductors is revisited. Anderson's pairing condition between time-reversed eigenstate pairs is derived from the physical constraint of the Anomalous Green's function. After this pairing condition is incorporated into the self-consistency equation, one may find that the phonon-mediated interaction decreases exponentially by localization.

Pairing Constraint on the Real Space Formalism of the Theory of Superconductivity

We review the new theory of impure superconductors constructed by Kim and Overhauser, and further developed by Kim. It was shown that Gor'kov's self-consistency equation needs a pairing constraint derived from the Anomalous Green's function. Whereas earlier studies have applied a constraint only on the pair potential, we show that the kernel also should be fixed by the ground state. The Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations need a pairing constraint in order to obtain the proper vacuum state by the corresponding unitary transformation. The relation between the pair potential and the gap parameter is clarified. This new study opens up a reinvestigation of inhomogeneous superconductors. We will discuss (i) strong coupling theory of dirty superconductors, (ii) suppression of magnetic impurity effect by ordinary impurities, (iii) weak localization correction to the phonon-mediated interaction, and (iv) other inhomogeneous superconductors.
