ProSwitch: Knowledge-Guided Instruction Tuning to Switch Between Professional and Non-Professional Responses

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated efficacy in various linguistic applications, including question answering and controlled text generation. However, studies into their ability to switch between opposite styles of responses in professional domains remain underexplored. This study introduces a novel approach, named ProSwitch, which enables a language model to switch between professional and non-professional answers, by tuning and evaluating through the guidance of domain and style knowledge. ProSwitch unfolds in three phases: LLM-augmented preparation to collect domain knowledge and QA pairs, instruction tuning to optimize LLMs with multiple levels of knowledge, and comprehensive evaluation to assess both style discrimination and reference-based quality of the generated text. Comparative analysis of ProSwitch against general and specialized LLMs reveals that our approach outperforms baselines in switching between professional and non-professional responses.

Provably Robust and Secure Steganography in Asymmetric Resource Scenario

To circumvent the unbridled and ever-encroaching surveillance and censorship in cyberspace, steganography has garnered attention for its ability to hide private information in innocent-looking carriers. Current provably secure steganography approaches require a pair of encoder and decoder to hide and extract private messages, both of which must run the same model with the same input to obtain identical distributions. These requirements pose significant challenges to the practical implementation of steganography, including limited access to powerful hardware and the intolerance of any changes to the shared input. To relax the limitation of hardware and solve the challenge of vulnerable shared input, a novel and practically significant scenario with asymmetric resource should be considered, where only the encoder is high-resource and accessible to powerful models while the decoder can only read the steganographic carriers without any other model's input. This paper proposes a novel provably robust and secure steganography framework for the asymmetric resource setting. Specifically, the encoder uses various permutations of distribution to hide secret bits, while the decoder relies on a sampling function to extract the hidden bits by guessing the permutation used. Further, the sampling function only takes the steganographic carrier as input, which makes the decoder independent of model's input and model itself. A comprehensive assessment of applying our framework to generative models substantiates its effectiveness. Our implementation demonstrates robustness when transmitting over binary symmetric channels with errors.

GLoCIM: Global-view Long Chain Interest Modeling for news recommendation

Accurately recommending candidate news articles to users has always been the core challenge of news recommendation system. News recommendations often require modeling of user interest to match candidate news. Recent efforts have primarily focused on extracting local subgraph information in a global click graph constructed by the clicked news sequence of all users. Howerer, the computational complexity of extracting global click graph information has hindered the ability to utilize far-reaching linkage which is hidden between two distant nodes in global click graph collaboratively among similar users. To overcome the problem above, we propose a Global-view Long Chain Interests Modeling for news recommendation (GLoCIM), which combines neighbor interest with long chain interest distilled from a global click graph, leveraging the collaboration among similar users to enhance news recommendation. We therefore design a long chain selection algorithm and long chain interest encoder to obtain global-view long chain interest from the global click graph. We design a gated network to integrate long chain interest with neighbor interest to achieve the collaborative interest among similar users. Subsequently we aggregate it with local news category-enhanced representation to generate final user representation. Then candidate news representation can be formed to match user representation to achieve news recommendation. Experimental results on real-world datasets validate the effectiveness of our method to improve the performance of news recommendation.

SETTP: Style Extraction and Tunable Inference via Dual-level Transferable Prompt Learning

Text style transfer, an important research direction in natural language processing, aims to adapt the text to various preferences but often faces challenges with limited resources. In this work, we introduce a novel method termed Style Extraction and Tunable Inference via Dual-level Transferable Prompt Learning (SETTP) for effective style transfer in low-resource scenarios. First, SETTP learns source style-level prompts containing fundamental style characteristics from high-resource style transfer. During training, the source style-level prompts are transferred through an attention module to derive a target style-level prompt for beneficial knowledge provision in low-resource style transfer. Additionally, we propose instance-level prompts obtained by clustering the target resources based on the semantic content to reduce semantic bias. We also propose an automated evaluation approach of style similarity based on alignment with human evaluations using ChatGPT-4. Our experiments across three resourceful styles show that SETTP requires only 1/20th of the data volume to achieve performance comparable to state-of-the-art methods. In tasks involving scarce data like writing style and role style, SETTP outperforms previous methods by 16.24\%.

Underdetermined DOA Estimation of Off-Grid Sources Based on the Generalized Double Pareto Prior

In this letter, we investigate a new generalized double Pareto based on off-grid sparse Bayesian learning (GDPOGSBL) approach to improve the performance of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation in underdetermined scenarios. The method aims to enhance the sparsity of source signal by utilizing the generalized double Pareto (GDP) prior. Firstly, we employ a first-order linear Taylor expansion to model the real array manifold matrix, and Bayesian inference is utilized to calculate the off-grid error, which mitigates the grid dictionary mismatch problem in underdetermined scenarios. Secondly, an innovative grid refinement method is introduced, treating grid points as iterative parameters to minimize the modeling error between the source and grid points. The numerical simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed strategy, especially when dealing with a coarse grid and few snapshots.

Towards Next-Generation Steganalysis: LLMs Unleash the Power of Detecting Steganography

Linguistic steganography provides convenient implementation to hide messages, particularly with the emergence of AI generation technology. The potential abuse of this technology raises security concerns within societies, calling for powerful linguistic steganalysis to detect carrier containing steganographic messages. Existing methods are limited to finding distribution differences between steganographic texts and normal texts from the aspect of symbolic statistics. However, the distribution differences of both kinds of texts are hard to build precisely, which heavily hurts the detection ability of the existing methods in realistic scenarios. To seek a feasible way to construct practical steganalysis in real world, this paper propose to employ human-like text processing abilities of large language models (LLMs) to realize the difference from the aspect of human perception, addition to traditional statistic aspect. Specifically, we systematically investigate the performance of LLMs in this task by modeling it as a generative paradigm, instead of traditional classification paradigm. Extensive experiment results reveal that generative LLMs exhibit significant advantages in linguistic steganalysis and demonstrate performance trends distinct from traditional approaches. Results also reveal that LLMs outperform existing baselines by a wide margin, and the domain-agnostic ability of LLMs makes it possible to train a generic steganalysis model (Both codes and trained models are openly available in https://github.com/ba0z1/Linguistic-Steganalysis-with-LLMs).

Learnable Linguistic Watermarks for Tracing Model Extraction Attacks on Large Language Models

In the rapidly evolving domain of artificial intelligence, safeguarding the intellectual property of Large Language Models (LLMs) is increasingly crucial. Current watermarking techniques against model extraction attacks, which rely on signal insertion in model logits or post-processing of generated text, remain largely heuristic. We propose a novel method for embedding learnable linguistic watermarks in LLMs, aimed at tracing and preventing model extraction attacks. Our approach subtly modifies the LLM's output distribution by introducing controlled noise into token frequency distributions, embedding an statistically identifiable controllable watermark. We leverage statistical hypothesis testing and information theory, particularly focusing on Kullback-Leibler Divergence, to differentiate between original and modified distributions effectively. Our watermarking method strikes a delicate well balance between robustness and output quality, maintaining low false positive/negative rates and preserving the LLM's original performance.

A New Sentence Extraction Strategy for Unsupervised Extractive Summarization Methods

In recent years, text summarization methods have attracted much attention again thanks to the researches on neural network models. Most of the current text summarization methods based on neural network models are supervised methods which need large-scale datasets. However, large-scale datasets are difficult to obtain in practical applications. In this paper, we model the task of extractive text summarization methods from the perspective of Information Theory, and then describe the unsupervised extractive methods with a uniform framework. To improve the feature distribution and to decrease the mutual information of summarization sentences, we propose a new sentence extraction strategy which can be applied to existing unsupervised extractive methods. Experiments are carried out on different datasets, and results show that our strategy is indeed effective and in line with expectations.

VLBI detection of the AE Aqr twin, LAMOST J024048.51+195226.9

LAMOST J024048.51+195226.9 (J0240+1952) was recently identified as the second AE Aquarii (AE Aqr)-type cataclysmic variable, possessing the fastest known rotating white dwarf. We performed a Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observation of J0240+1952 utilizing the European VLBI Network at 1.7\,GHz, to obtain the first view of the radio morphology on mas scale. Our high-resolution VLBI image clearly shows that the radio emission is compact on mas scale ($\lesssim2$\,AU), with no evidence for a radio jet or extended emission. The compact radio source has an average flux density of $\sim0.37$\,mJy, and its brightness temperature is given at $\gtrsim2.3\times10^{7}$\,K, confirming a non-thermal origin. The emission exhibits irregular variations on a time-scale of tens of minutes, similar to the radio flares seen in AE Aqr. The measured VLBI position of J0240+1952 is consistent with that derived from \textit{Gaia}. Our results favour the model in which the radio emission is attributed to a superposition of synchrotron radiation from expanding magnetized blobs of this system.

CLEVA: Chinese Language Models EVAluation Platform

With the continuous emergence of Chinese Large Language Models (LLMs), how to evaluate a model's capabilities has become an increasingly significant issue. The absence of a comprehensive Chinese benchmark that thoroughly assesses a model's performance, the unstandardized and incomparable prompting procedure, and the prevalent risk of contamination pose major challenges in the current evaluation of Chinese LLMs. We present CLEVA, a user-friendly platform crafted to holistically evaluate Chinese LLMs. Our platform employs a standardized workflow to assess LLMs' performance across various dimensions, regularly updating a competitive leaderboard. To alleviate contamination, CLEVA curates a significant proportion of new data and develops a sampling strategy that guarantees a unique subset for each leaderboard round. Empowered by an easy-to-use interface that requires just a few mouse clicks and a model API, users can conduct a thorough evaluation with minimal coding. Large-scale experiments featuring 23 Chinese LLMs have validated CLEVA's efficacy.

Specializing Small Language Models towards Complex Style Transfer via Latent Attribute Pre-Training

In this work, we introduce the concept of complex text style transfer tasks, and constructed complex text datasets based on two widely applicable scenarios. Our dataset is the first large-scale data set of its kind, with 700 rephrased sentences and 1,000 sentences from the game Genshin Impact. While large language models (LLM) have shown promise in complex text style transfer, they have drawbacks such as data privacy concerns, network instability, and high deployment costs. To address these issues, we explore the effectiveness of small models (less than T5-3B) with implicit style pre-training through contrastive learning. We also propose a method for automated evaluation of text generation quality based on alignment with human evaluations using ChatGPT. Finally, we compare our approach with existing methods and show that our model achieves state-of-art performances of few-shot text style transfer models.

FoodGPT: A Large Language Model in Food Testing Domain with Incremental Pre-training and Knowledge Graph Prompt

Currently, the construction of large language models in specific domains is done by fine-tuning on a base model. Some models also incorporate knowledge bases without the need for pre-training. This is because the base model already contains domain-specific knowledge during the pre-training process. We build a large language model for food testing. Unlike the above approach, a significant amount of data in this domain exists in Scanning format for domain standard documents. In addition, there is a large amount of untrained structured knowledge. Therefore, we introduce an incremental pre-training step to inject this knowledge into a large language model. In this paper, we propose a method for handling structured knowledge and scanned documents in incremental pre-training. To overcome the problem of machine hallucination, we constructe a knowledge graph to serve as an external knowledge base for supporting retrieval in the large language model. It is worth mentioning that this paper is a technical report of our pre-release version, and we will report our specific experimental data in future versions.

FedSampling: A Better Sampling Strategy for Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) is an important technique for learning models from decentralized data in a privacy-preserving way. Existing FL methods usually uniformly sample clients for local model learning in each round. However, different clients may have significantly different data sizes, and the clients with more data cannot have more opportunities to contribute to model training, which may lead to inferior performance. In this paper, instead of client uniform sampling, we propose a novel data uniform sampling strategy for federated learning (FedSampling), which can effectively improve the performance of federated learning especially when client data size distribution is highly imbalanced across clients. In each federated learning round, local data on each client is randomly sampled for local model learning according to a probability based on the server desired sample size and the total sample size on all available clients. Since the data size on each client is privacy-sensitive, we propose a privacy-preserving way to estimate the total sample size with a differential privacy guarantee. Experiments on four benchmark datasets show that FedSampling can effectively improve the performance of federated learning.

Fengshenbang 1.0: Being the Foundation of Chinese Cognitive Intelligence

Nowadays, foundation models become one of fundamental infrastructures in artificial intelligence, paving ways to the general intelligence. However, the reality presents two urgent challenges: existing foundation models are dominated by the English-language community; users are often given limited resources and thus cannot always use foundation models. To support the development of the Chinese-language community, we introduce an open-source project, called Fengshenbang, which leads by the research center for Cognitive Computing and Natural Language (CCNL). Our project has comprehensive capabilities, including large pre-trained models, user-friendly APIs, benchmarks, datasets, and others. We wrap all these in three sub-projects: the Fengshenbang Model, the Fengshen Framework, and the Fengshen Benchmark. An open-source roadmap, Fengshenbang, aims to re-evaluate the open-source community of Chinese pre-trained large-scale models, prompting the development of the entire Chinese large-scale model community. We also want to build a user-centered open-source ecosystem to allow individuals to access the desired models to match their computing resources. Furthermore, we invite companies, colleges, and research institutions to collaborate with us to build the large-scale open-source model-based ecosystem. We hope that this project will be the foundation of Chinese cognitive intelligence.

AdaVAE: Exploring Adaptive GPT-2s in Variational Auto-Encoders for Language Modeling

Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) has become the de-facto learning paradigm in achieving representation learning and generation for natural language at the same time. Nevertheless, existing VAE-based language models either employ elementary RNNs, which is not powerful to handle complex works in the multi-task situation, or fine-tunes two pre-trained language models (PLMs) for any downstream task, which is a huge drain on resources. In this paper, we propose the first VAE framework empowered with adaptive GPT-2s (AdaVAE). Different from existing systems, we unify both the encoder\&decoder of the VAE model using GPT-2s with adaptive parameter-efficient components, and further introduce Latent Attention operation to better construct latent space from transformer models. Experiments from multiple dimensions validate that AdaVAE is competent to effectively organize language in three related tasks (language modeling, representation modeling and guided text generation) even with less than $15\%$ activated parameters in training. Our code is available at \url{https://github.com/ImKeTT/AdaVAE}.

FairVFL: A Fair Vertical Federated Learning Framework with Contrastive Adversarial Learning

Vertical federated learning (VFL) is a privacy-preserving machine learning paradigm that can learn models from features distributed on different platforms in a privacy-preserving way. Since in real-world applications the data may contain bias on fairness-sensitive features (e.g., gender), VFL models may inherit bias from training data and become unfair for some user groups. However, existing fair machine learning methods usually rely on the centralized storage of fairness-sensitive features to achieve model fairness, which are usually inapplicable in federated scenarios. In this paper, we propose a fair vertical federated learning framework (FairVFL), which can improve the fairness of VFL models. The core idea of FairVFL is to learn unified and fair representations of samples based on the decentralized feature fields in a privacy-preserving way. Specifically, each platform with fairness-insensitive features first learns local data representations from local features. Then, these local representations are uploaded to a server and aggregated into a unified representation for the target task. In order to learn a fair unified representation, we send it to each platform storing fairness-sensitive features and apply adversarial learning to remove bias from the unified representation inherited from the biased data. Moreover, for protecting user privacy, we further propose a contrastive adversarial learning method to remove private information from the unified representation in server before sending it to the platforms keeping fairness-sensitive features. Experiments on three real-world datasets validate that our method can effectively improve model fairness with user privacy well-protected.

PCAE: A Framework of Plug-in Conditional Auto-Encoder for Controllable Text Generation

Controllable text generation has taken a gigantic step forward these days. Yet existing methods are either constrained in a one-off pattern or not efficient enough for receiving multiple conditions at every generation stage. We propose a model-agnostic framework Plug-in Conditional Auto-Encoder for Controllable Text Generation (PCAE) towards flexible and semi-supervised text generation. Our framework is "plug-and-play" with partial parameters to be fine-tuned in the pre-trained model (less than a half). Crucial to the success of PCAE is the proposed broadcasting label fusion network for navigating the global latent code to a specified local and confined space. Visualization of the local latent prior well confirms the primary devotion in hidden space of the proposed model. Moreover, extensive experiments across five related generation tasks (from 2 conditions up to 10 conditions) on both RNN- based and pre-trained BART [26] based auto-encoders reveal the high capability of PCAE, which enables generation that is highly manipulable, syntactically diverse and time-saving with minimum labeled samples. We will release our code at https://github.com/ImKeTT/pcae.

Semi-Supervised Hierarchical Graph Classification

Node classification and graph classification are two graph learning problems that predict the class label of a node and the class label of a graph respectively. A node of a graph usually represents a real-world entity, e.g., a user in a social network, or a document in a document citation network. In this work, we consider a more challenging but practically useful setting, in which a node itself is a graph instance. This leads to a hierarchical graph perspective which arises in many domains such as social network, biological network and document collection. We study the node classification problem in the hierarchical graph where a 'node' is a graph instance. As labels are usually limited, we design a novel semi-supervised solution named SEAL-CI. SEAL-CI adopts an iterative framework that takes turns to update two modules, one working at the graph instance level and the other at the hierarchical graph level. To enforce a consistency among different levels of hierarchical graph, we propose the Hierarchical Graph Mutual Information (HGMI) and further present a way to compute HGMI with theoretical guarantee. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this hierarchical graph modeling and the proposed SEAL-CI method on text and social network data.
