Dynamic winding number for exploring band topology

Topological invariants play a key role in the characterization of topological states. Due to the existence of exceptional points, it is a great challenge to detect topological invariants in non-Hermitian systems. We put forward a dynamic winding number, the winding of realistic observables in long-time average, for exploring band topology in both Hermitian and non-Hermitian two-band models via a unified approach. We build a concrete relation between dynamic winding numbers and conventional topological invariants. In one-dimension, the dynamical winding number directly gives the conventional winding number. In two-dimension, the Chern number relates to the weighted sum of dynamic winding numbers of all phase singularity points. This work opens a new avenue to measure topological invariants not requesting any prior knowledge of system topology via time-averaged spin textures.

Magnetic phase transitions of insulating spin-orbit coupled Bose atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices

We consider the insulating spin-orbit coupled Bose atoms confined within one-dimensional optical lattices and explore their ground-state magnetic phase transitions. Under strong interactions, the charge degrees of atoms are frozen and the system can be described by an anisotropic XXZ Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and transverse field. We apply the matrix product state method to obtain low-energy states and analyze the lowest energy gaps and the ground-state magnetization and correlations. We find when the transverse field is absent, the ground state is a gapped ferromagnetic phase with long-range correlation in the z direction if the interspin s-wave interacting strength is stronger than that of the intraspin one, otherwise it is a gapless Luttinger liquid (LL) phase with algebraic decaying correlation. When the transverse field is turned on, the gapless LL phase is broken, there emerges a long-range correlated phase with ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic or spiral order, which depends on the DM interaction strength. We believe our study provides a complete understanding of the interplay between SOC and quantum magnetism of spinor atoms in optical lattices.

Observation of dynamical phase transitions in a topological nanomechanical system

Dynamical phase transitions (DPTs), characterized by non-analytic behaviors in time domain, extend the equilibrium phase transitions to far-from-equilibrium situations. It has been predicted that DPTs can be precisely identified by the discontinuities of the Pancharatnam geometric phase (PGP) during the time evolution. However, PGP always mixes with dynamical phase and the experimental observation of DPTs by PGP is still absent. Here, we theoretically present a novel scheme for eliminating the dynamical phase by taking advantage of chiral symmetry in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, and experimentally observe DPTs by directly measuring PGP in a quenched topological nanomechanical lattice. Time-dependent topological structures of the SSH model are configured by eight strong-coupled high-quality-factor nanomechanical oscillators. By measuring the vibration phase and the normalized amplitude of the edge oscillator, we show a direct classical analog of DPTs. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate the robustness of DPTs against weak structure disorders, and numerically explore the relation between DPTs and the equilibrium phase boundary. This work not only establishes the quantitative method to identify DPTs, but also opens the door for studying non-equilibrium topological dynamics with a well-controlled nanomechanical system.

Dispersion Suppressed Topological Thouless Pumping

In Thouless pumping, although non-flat band has no effects on the quantization of particle transport, it induces wave-packet dispersion which hinders the practical applications of Thouless pumping. Indeed, we find that the dispersion mainly arises from the dynamical phase difference between individual Bloch states. Here we propose two efficient schemes to suppress the dispersion in Thouless pumping: a re-localization echo protocol and a high-order tunneling suppression protocol. In the re-localization echo protocol, we reverse the Hamiltonian in the second pumping cycle to cancel the dynamical phase difference arising from non-flat band, so that the dispersed wave-packet becomes re-localized. In the high-order tunneling suppression protocol, we modulate the nearest-neighbor tunneling to make the Bloch band more flat and suppress the high-order tunneling which causes wave-packet dispersion. Our study paves a way toward the dispersionless Thouless pumping for practical applications in matter transport, state transfer and quantum communication.

Symmetry-Protected Quantum Adiabatic Evolution in Spontaneous Symmetry-Breaking Transitions

Quantum adiabatic evolution, an important fundamental concept inphysics, describes the dynamical evolution arbitrarily close to the instantaneous eigenstate of a slowly driven Hamiltonian. In most systems undergoing spontaneous symmetry-breaking transitions, their two lowest eigenstates change from non-degenerate to degenerate. Therefore, due to the corresponding energy-gap vanishes, the conventional adiabatic condition becomes invalid. Here we explore the existence of quantum adiabatic evolutions in spontaneous symmetry-breaking transitions and derive a symmetry-dependent adiabatic condition. Because the driven Hamiltonian conserves the symmetry in the whole process, the transition between different instantaneous eigenstates with different symmetries is forbidden. Therefore, even if the minimum energy-gap vanishes, symmetry-protected quantum adiabatic evolutioncan still appear when the driven system varies according to the symmetry-dependent adiabatic condition. This study not only advances our understandings of quantum adiabatic evolution and spontaneous symmetry-breaking transitions, but also provides extensive applications ranging from quantum state engineering, topological Thouless pumping to quantum computing.

Bloch oscillations of multi-magnon excitations in a Heisenberg XXZ chain

The studies of multi-magnon excitations will extend our understandings of quantum magnetism and strongly correlated matters. Here, by using the time-evolving block decimation algorithm, we investigate the Bloch oscillations of two-magnon excitations under a gradient magnetic field. Through analyzing the symmetry of the Hamiltonian, we derive a rigorous and universal relation between ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic systems. Under strong interactions, in addition to free-magnon Bloch oscillations, there appear fractional bounded-magnon Bloch oscillations which can be understood by an effective single-particle model. To extract the frequencies of Bloch oscillations and determine the gradient of magnetic field, we respectively calculate the fidelity in the time domain and the sub-standard deviation in the frequency domain. Our study not only explore the interaction-induced Bloch oscillations of multi-magnon excitations, but also provides an alternative approach to determine the gradient of magnetic field via ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Compact gravimeter with an ensemble of ultracold atoms in spin-dependent optical lattices

Atomic interferometry in optical lattices is a new trend of developing practical quantum gravimeter. Here, we propose a compact and portable gravimetry scheme with an ensemble of ultracold atoms in gravitationally tilted spin-dependent optical lattices. The fast, coherent separation and recombination of atoms can be realized via polarization-synthesized optical lattices. The input atomic wavepacket is coherently split into two parts by a spin-dependent shift and a subsequent $\fracπ{2}$ pulse. Then the two parts are held for accumulating a relative phase related to the gravity. Lastly the two parts are recombined for interference by a $\fracπ{2}$ pulse and a subsequent spin-dependent shift. The $\fracπ{2}$ pulses not only preclude the spin-dependent energies in the accumulated phase, but also avoid the error sources such as dislocation of optical lattices in the holding process. In addition, we develop an analytical method for the sensitivity in multi-path interferometry.

Hybrid atom-molecule quantum walks in one-dimensional optical lattice

We study hybrid atom-molecule quantum walks in one-dimensional optical lattices with two interacting bosonic atoms which may be converted into a molecule. The hybrid atom-molecule energy bands include a continuum band and two isolated bands, which respectively correspond to scattering states and dressed bound states (DBS's). Because of the atom-molecule coupling, the DBS's may appear even in the absence of atom-atom interaction. From an initial state of two atoms occupying the same site, in addition to independent quantum walks which correspond to scattering states, correlated quantum walks appear as a signature of DBS's. Even if the atom-atom interaction and the atom-molecule coupling are much stronger than the tunneling strengths, independent quantum walks may still appear under certain resonant conditions. The correlated quantum walks show two light-cones with different propagation velocities, which can be analytically explained by the effective tunneling strengths of the two different DBS's. Furthermore, the effective nearest-neighbor tunneling of DBS's can be suppressed to zero, which can be explained by the destructive interference between the atomic pair and the molecule.

Achieving Heisenberg-limited metrology with spin cat states via interaction-based readout

Spin cat states are promising candidates for quantum-enhanced measurement. Here, we analytically show that the ultimate measurement precision of spin cat states approaches the Heisenberg limit, where the uncertainty is inversely proportional to the total particle number. In order to fully exploit their metrological ability, we propose to use the interaction-based readout for implementing phase estimation. It is demonstrated that the interaction-based readout enables spin cat states to saturate their ultimate precision bounds. The interaction-based readout comprises a one-axis twisting, two $\fracπ{2}$ pulses, and a population measurement, which can be realized via current experimental techniques. Compared with the twisting echo scheme on spin squeezed states, our scheme with spin cat states is more robust against detection noise. Our scheme may pave an experimentally feasible way to achieve Heisenberg-limited metrology with non-Gaussian entangled states.

Topological Floquet edge states in periodically curved waveguides

We study the Floquet edge states in arrays of periodically curved optical waveguides described by the modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Beyond the bulk-edge correspondence, our study explores the interplay between band topology and periodic modulations. By analysing the quasi-energy spectra and Zak phase, we reveal that, although topological and non-topological edge states can exist for the same parameters, \emph{they can not appear in the same spectral gap}. In the high-frequency limit, we find analytically all boundaries between the different phases and study the coexistence of topological and non-topological edge states. In contrast to unmodulated systems, the edge states appear due to either band topology or modulation-induced defects. This means that periodic modulations may not only tune the parametric regions with nontrivial topology, but may also support novel edge states.

Topological magnon bound-states in periodically modulated Heisenberg XXZ chains

Strongly interacting topological states in multi-particle quantum systems pose great challenges to both theory and experiment. Recently, bound states of elementary spin waves (magnons) in quantum magnets have been experimentally observed in quantum Heisenberg chains comprising ultracold Bose atoms in optical lattices. Here, we explore a strongly interacting topological state called topological magnon bound-state in the quantum Heisenberg chain under cotranslational symmetry. We find that the cotranslational symmetry is the key to the definition of a topological invariant for multi-particle quantum states, which enables us to characterize the topological features of multi-magnon excitations. We calculate energy spectra, density distributions, correlations and Chern numbers of the two-magnon bound-states and show the existence of topological protected edge bound-states. Our study not only opens a new prospect to pursue topological magnon bound-states, but also gives insights into the characterization and understanding of strongly interacting topological states.

Topological invariant and cotranslational symmetry in strongly interacting multi-magnon systems

It is still an outstanding challenge to characterize and understand the topological features of strongly interacting states such as bound-states in interacting quantum systems. Here, by introducing a cotranslational symmetry in an interacting multi-particle quantum system, we systematically develop a method to define a Chern invariant, which is a generalization of the well-known Thouless-Kohmoto-Nightingale-den Nijs invariant, for identifying strongly interacting topological states. As an example, we study the topological multi-magnon states in a generalized Heisenberg XXZ model, which can be realized by the currently available experiment techniques of cold atoms [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{111}, 185301 (2013); Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{111}, 185302 (2013)]. Through calculating the two-magnon excitation spectrum and the defined Chern number, we explore the emergence of topological edge bound-states and give their topological phase diagram. We also analytically derive an effective single-particle Hofstadter superlattice model for a better understanding of the topological bound-states. Our results not only provide a new approach to defining a topological invariant for interacting multi-particle systems, but also give insights into the characterization and understanding of strongly interacting topological states.

Multi-particle Wannier states and Thouless pumping of interacting bosons

The study of topological effects in physics is a hot area, and only recently researchers were able to address the important issues of topological properties of interacting quantum systems. But it is still a great challenge to describe multi-particle and interaction effects. Here, we introduce multi-particle Wannier states for interacting systems with co-translational symmetry. We reveal how the shift of multi-particle Wannier state relates to the multi-particle Chern number, and study the two-boson Thouless pumping in an interacting Rice-Mele model. In addition to the bound-state Thouless pumping in which two bosons move unidirectionally as a whole, we find topologically resonant tunneling in which two bosons move unidirectionally, one by the other, provided the neighboring-well potential bias matches the interaction energy. Our work creates a new paradigm for multi-particle topological effects and lays a cornerstone for detecting interacting topological states.

Topological Phase Transitions and Thouless Pumping of Light in Photonic Waveguide Arrays

Photonic waveguide arrays provide an excellent platform for simulating conventional topological systems, and they can also be employed for the study of novel topological phases in photonics systems. However, a direct measurement of bulk topological invariants remains a great challenge. Here we study topological features of generalized commensurate Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) photonic waveguide arrays and construct a topological phase diagram by calculating all bulk Chern numbers, and then explore the bulk-edge correspondence by analyzing the topological edge states and their winding numbers. In contrast to incommensurate AAH models, diagonal and off-diagonal commensurate AAH models are not topologically equivalent. In particular, there appear nontrivial topological phases with large Chern numbers and topological phase transitions. By implementing Thouless pumping of light in photonic waveguide arrays, we propose a simple scheme to measure the bulk Chern numbers.

Cluster Mean-Field Signature of Entanglement Entropy in Bosonic Superfluid-Insulator Transitions

Entanglement entropy (EE), a fundamental conception in quantum information for characterizing entanglement, has been extensively employed to explore quantum phase transitions (QPTs). Although the conventional single-site mean-field (MF) approach successfully predicts the emergence of QPTs, it fails to include any entanglement. Here, for the first time, in the framework of a cluster MF treatment, we extract the signature of EE in the bosonic superfluid-insulator transitions. We consider a trimerized Kagome lattice of interacting bosons, in which each trimer is treated as a cluster, and implement the cluster MF treatment by decoupling all inter-trimer hopping. In addition to superfluid and integer insulator phases, we find that fractional insulator phases appear when the tunneling is dominated by the intra-trimer part. To quantify the residual bipartite entanglement in a cluster, we calculate the second-order Renyi entropy, which can be experimentally measured by quantum interference of many-body twins. The second-order Renyi entropy itself is continuous everywhere, however, the continuousness of its first-order derivative breaks down at the phase boundary. This means that the bosonic superfluid-insulator transitions can still be efficiently captured by the residual entanglement in our cluster MF treatment. Besides to the bosonic superfluid-insulator transitions, our cluster MF treatment may also be used to capture the signature of EE for other QPTs in quantum superlattice models.

Kibble-Zurek dynamics in an array of coupled binary Bose condensates

Universal dynamics of spontaneous symmetry breaking is central to understanding the universal behavior of spontaneous defect formation in various system from the early universe, condensed-matter systems to ultracold atomic systems. We explore the universal real-time dynamics in an array of coupled binary atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, which undergo a spontaneous symmetry breaking from the symmetric Rabi oscillation to the broken-symmetry self-trapping. In addition to Goldstone modes, there exist gapped Higgs mode whose excitation gap vanishes at the critical point. In the slow passage through the critical point, we analytically find that the symmetry-breaking dynamics obeys the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. From the scalings of bifurcation delay and domain formation, we numerically extract two Kibble-Zurek exponents $b_{1}=ν/(1+νz)$ and $b_{2}=1/(1+νz)$, which give the static correlation-length critical exponent $ν$ and the dynamic critical exponent $z$. Our approach provides an efficient way to simultaneous determination of the critical exponents $ν$ and $z$ for a continuous phase transition.

Bloch-Landau-Zener dynamics in single-particle Wannier-Zeeman systems

Stimulated by the experimental realization of spin-dependent tunneling via gradient magnetic field [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 225301 (2013); Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 185301 (2013)], we investigate dynamics of Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener tunneling of single spin-half particles in a periodic potential under the influence of a spin-dependent constant force. In analogy to the Wannier-Stark system, we call our system as the Wannier-Zeeman system. If there is no coupling between the two spin states, the system can be described by two crossing Wannier-Stark ladders with opposite tilts. The spatial crossing between two Wannier-Stark ladders becomes a spatial anti-crossing if the two spin states are coupled by external fields. For a wave-packet away from the spatial anti-crossing, due to the spin-dependent constant force, it will undergo spatial Landau-Zener transitions assisted by the intrinsic intra-band Bloch oscillations, which we call the Bloch-Landau-Zener dynamics. If the inter-spin coupling is sufficiently strong, the system undergoes adiabatic Bloch-Landau-Zener dynamics, in which the spin dynamics follows the local dressed states. Otherwise, for non-strong inter-spin couplings, the system undergoes non-adiabatic Bloch-Landau-Zener dynamics.

Statistics-dependent quantum co-walking of two particles in one-dimensional lattices with nearest-neighbor interactions

We investigate continuous-time quantum walks of two indistinguishable particles [bosons, fermions or hard-core bosons (HCBs)] in one-dimensional lattices with nearest-neighbor interactions. The results for two HCBs are well consistent with the recent experimental observation of two-magnon dynamics [Nature 502, 76 (2013)]. The two interacting particles can undergo independent- and/or co-walking depending on both quantum statistics and interaction strength. Two strongly interacting particles may form a bound state and then co-walk like a single composite particle with statistics-dependent walk speed. Analytical solutions for the scattering and bound states, which appear in the two-particle quantum walks, are obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem in the two-particle Hilbert space. In the context of degenerate perturbation theory, an effective single-particle model for the quantum co-walking is analytically derived and the walk seep of bosons is found to be exactly three times of the ones of fermions/HCBs. Our result paves the way for experimentally exploring quantum statistics via two-particle quantum walks.
