Robust Hybrid Precoding for Beam Misalignment in Millimeter-Wave Communications

In this paper, we focus on the phenomenon of beam misalignment in Millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-receiver communication systems, and propose robust hybrid precoding designs that alleviate the performance loss caused by this effect. We consider two distinct design methodologies: I) the synthesis of a `flat mainlobe' beam model which maximizes the minimum effective array gain over the beam misalignment range, and II) the inclusion of the `error statistics' into the design, where the array response incorporating the distribution of the misalignment error is derived. For both design methodologies, we propose a hybrid precoding design that approximates the robust fully-digital precoder, which is obtained via alternating optimization based on the gradient projection (GP) method. We also propose a low-complexity alternative to the GP algorithm based on the least square projection (LSP), and we further deploy a second-stage digital precoder to mitigate any residual inter-receiver interference after the hybrid analog-digital precoding. Numerical results show that the robust hybrid precoding designs can effectively alleviate the performance degradation incurred by beam misalignment.

Hybrid Precoder and Combiner for Imperfect Beam Alignment in mmWave MIMO Systems

In this letter, we aim to design a robust hybrid precoder and combiner against beam misalignment in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. We consider the inclusion of the `error statistics' into the precoder and combiner design, where the array response that incorporates the distribution of the misalignment error is first derived. An iterative algorithm is then proposed to design the robust hybrid precoder and combiner to maximize the array gain in the presence of beam misalignment. To further enhance the spectral efficiency, a second-stage digital precoder and combiner are included to mitigate the inter-stream interference. Numerical results show that the proposed robust hybrid precoder and combiner design can effectively alleviate the performance degradation incurred by beam misalignment.

Neural Networks in Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO Systems

Neural networks have been applied to the physical layer of wireless communication systems to solve complex problems. In millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, hybrid precoding has been considered as an energy-efficient technology to replace fully-digital precoding. The way of designing hybrid precoding in mmWave massive MIMO systems by multi-layer neural networks has not been investigated. Based on further decomposing the baseband precoding matrix, an idea is proposed in this paper to map hybrid precoding structure to a multi-layer neural network. Considering the deterioration in the throughput and energy efficiency of mmWave massive MIMO systems, the feasibility of the proposed idea is analyzed. Moreover, a singular value decomposition (SVD) based decomposing (SVDDE) algorithm is proposed to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed idea. Simulation results indicate that there is an optimal number of users which can minimize the performance deterioration. Moreover, the simulation results also show that slight deterioration in the throughput and energy efficiency of mmWave massive MIMO systems is caused by further decomposing the baseband precoding matrix. In other words, further decomposing the baseband precoding matrix is a feasible way to map the hybrid precoding structure to a multi-layer neural network.

Towards Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications: Typical Scenarios, Possible Solutions, and Open Issues

Ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) has been considered as one of the three new application scenarios in the \emph{5th Generation} (5G) \emph {New Radio} (NR), where the physical layer design aspects have been specified. With the 5G NR, we can guarantee the reliability and latency in radio access networks. However, for communication scenarios where the transmission involves both radio access and wide area core networks, the delay in radio access networks only contributes to part of the \emph{end-to-end} (E2E) delay. In this paper, we outline the delay components and packet loss probabilities in typical communication scenarios of URLLC, and formulate the constraints on E2E delay and overall packet loss probability. Then, we summarize possible solutions in the physical layer, the link layer, the network layer, and the cross-layer design, respectively. Finally, we discuss the open issues in prediction and communication co-design for URLLC in wide area large scale networks.

Energy Efficient Optimization of Wireless-powered 5G Full Duplex Cellular Networks: A Mean Field Game Approach

This paper studies the power allocation of an ultra-dense cellular network consisting of multiple full-duplex (FD) base stations (BSs) serving a large number of half-duplex (HD) user equipments (UEs) located in a wide geographical area. Each BS consists of a baseband unit (BBU) that is responsible for signal processing and base station control, and a radio remote unit (RRU) that corresponds to a radio transceiver remotely built closer to the UEs. We consider a wireless-powered cellular network in which the BBU can periodically charge the RRU. We model the energy efficiency and coverage optimization problem for this network as a mean field game. We consider the weighted energy efficiency of the BS as the main performance metrics and evaluate the optimal strategy that can be adopted by the FD BSs in an ultra-dense network setting. Based on the interference and network energy efficiency models of the mean field game theory, Nash equilibrium of our proposed game is derived. Utilizing solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) and Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equations, a new power transmission strategy is developed for the BSs to optimize the energy efficiency of 5G cellular networks with full duplex transmissions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed strategy not only improves the energy efficiency but also ensures the average network coverage probability converges to a stable level.

To Retransmit or Not: Real-Time Remote Estimation in Wireless Networked Control

Real-time remote estimation is critical for mission-critical applications including industrial automation, smart grid, and the tactile Internet. In this paper, we propose a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ)-based real-time remote estimation framework for linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamic systems. Considering the estimation quality of such a system, there is a fundamental tradeoff between the reliability and freshness of the sensor's measurement transmission. When a failed transmission occurs, the sensor can either retransmit the previous old measurement such that the receiver can obtain a more reliable old measurement, or transmit a new but less reliable measurement. To design the optimal decision, we formulate a new problem to optimize the sensor's online decision policy, i.e., to retransmit or not, depending on both the current estimation quality of the remote estimator and the current number of retransmissions of the sensor, so as to minimize the long-term remote estimation mean-squared error (MSE). This problem is non-trivial. In particular, it is not clear what the condition is in terms of the communication channel quality and the LTI system parameters, to ensure that the long-term estimation MSE can be bounded. We give a sufficient condition of the existence of a stationary and deterministic optimal policy that stabilizes the remote estimation system and minimizes the MSE. Also, we prove that the optimal policy has a switching structure, and derive a low-complexity suboptimal policy. Our numerical results show that the proposed optimal policy notably improves the performance of the remote estimation system compared to the conventional non-HARQ policy.

A Novel JT-CoMP Scheme in 5G Fractal Small Cell Networks

To satisfy the requirement of the fifth generation (5G) mobile communications that offers an ultra high data rate of 100Mbps to 1Gbps anytime and anywhere, the coordinated multipoint (CoMP) technique is proposed to mitigate inter-cell interference to improve the coverage of high data rate services, cell-edge throughput, and system capacity. However, the joint transmission (JT) CoMP technique is difficult to be applied in practice due to the critical time synchronization for multiple coordination links and the bottleneck of backhaul capacity and radio resource at each small cell base stations (SBSs). Moreover, since the coordination SBSs in the conditional scheme are entirely separate from each other, different time of arrivals at the user cause the severe time synchronization problem. The anisotropic propagation environment in the urban scenario makes the implementation condition even worse. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel JT-CoMP scheme with the anisotropic path loss model to minimize the network backhaul traffic subject to the constraints on the radio resource and the differences in time of arrivals. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed distance-resource-limited CoMP scheme can obtain the maximum achievable rate with the minimum network backhaul traffic, compared with existing schemes.

TCM-NOMA: Joint Multi-user Codeword Design and Detection in Trellis Coded Modulation based NOMA for Beyond 5G

In this paper, we propose a novel non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme based on trellis-coded modulation (TCM). Different from those in the traditional code-domain NOMA, the incoming data streams of multiple users are jointly coded and mapped to the codewords so as to improve the coding gain of the system without any bandwidth extension. Both codeword design and multi-user detection are considered to optimize the TCM for NOMA. The multi-dimensional (MD) constellation is carefully selected and a new set partitioning algorithm is developed for MD signal set labeling. To achieve the trade-off between the BER performance and complexity, a suboptimal two-layer Viterbi algorithm is proposed for joint decoding. Simulation results show that our proposed TCM-based NOMA scheme performs significantly better than the traditional code-domain NOMA and OFDMA schemes in terms of the BER performance under the same channel conditions.

Energy Efficiency of Generalized Spatial Modulation Aided Massive MIMO Systems

One of focuses in green communication studies is the energy efficiency (EE) of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Although the massive MIMO technology can improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of cellular networks by configuring a large number of antennas at base stations (BSs), the energy consumption of radio frequency (RF) chains increases dramatically. The increment of energy consumption is caused by the increase of RF chain number to match the antenna number in massive MIMO communication systems. To overcome this problem, a generalized spatial modulation (GSM) solution is presented to simultaneously reduce the number of RF chains and maintain the SE of massive MIMO communication systems. A EE model is proposed to estimate the transmission and computation power of massive MIMO communication systems with GSM. Simulation results demonstrate that the EE of massive MIMO communication systems with GSM outperforms the massive MIMO communication systems without GSM. Besides, the computation power consumed by massive MIMO communication systems with GSM is effectively reduced.

Segmentation-Discarding Ordered-Statistic Decoding for Linear Block Codes

In this paper, we propose an efficient reliability based segmentation-discarding decoding (SDD) algorithm for short block-length codes. A novel segmentation-discarding technique is proposed along with the stopping rule to significantly reduce the decoding complexity without a significant performance degradation compared to ordered statistics decoding (OSD). In the proposed decoder, the list of test error patterns (TEPs) is divided into several segments according to carefully selected boundaries and every segment is checked separately during the reprocessing stage. Decoding is performed under the constraint of the discarding rule and stopping rule. Simulations results for different codes show that our proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the decoding complexity compared to the existing OSD algorithms in literature.

Multiplexing More Streams in the MU-MISO Downlink by Interference Exploitation Precoding

In this paper, we study the interference exploitation precoding for the scenario where the number of streams simultaneously transmitted by the base station (BS) is larger than that of transmit antennas at the BS, and derive the optimal precoding structure by employing the pseudo inverse. We show that the optimal pre-scaling vector is equal to a linear combination of the right singular vectors that correspond to zero singular values of the coefficient matrix. By formulating the dual problem, the optimal precoding matrix can be expressed as a function of the dual variables in a closed form, and an equivalent quadratic programming (QP) formulation is further derived for computational complexity reduction. Numerical results validate our analysis and demonstrate significant performance improvements for interference exploitation precoding for the considered scenario.

Computing Resource Allocation of Mobile Edge Computing Networks Based on Potential Game Theory

Mobile edge computing (MEC) networks are one of the key technologies for ultra-reliability and low-latency communications. The computing resource allocation solution needs to be carefully designed to guarantee the computing resource efficiency of MEC networks. Based on the potential game theory, a computing resource allocation solution is proposed to reduce energy consumption and improve computing resource efficiency in MEC networks. The computing resource allocation solution includes two parts: the first part is the power control scheme based on the potential game theory and the second part is the computing resource allocation scheme based on linear programming. The power control scheme is to find a set of the transmission powers of base stations (BSs) that maximizes the potential function of MEC networks. The computing resource allocation scheme is to maximize the average computing resource allocation coefficient of the MEC networks based on the results of the power control scheme. Compared with traditional solutions, simulation results indicate the computing resource utilization and energy efficiency of the proposed computing resource allocation solution are significantly improved.

Performance Analysis of Non-Orthogonal Multicast in Two-tier Heterogeneous Networks

With the explosive growth of mobile services, non-orthogonal broadcast/multicast transmissions can effectively improves spectrum efficiency. Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) represents a paradigm shift from conventional orthogonal multiple-access (OMA) concepts and has been recognized as one of the key enabling technologies for fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. In this paper, a two-tier heterogeneous network is studied, in which the wireless signal power is partitioned by the NOMA scheme. Moreover, the coverage probability, the average rate and the average QoE are derived to evaluate network performance. Simulation results show that compared with the OMA method, non-orthogonal broadcast/multicast method improve both the average user rate and QoE in the two-tier heterogeneous network.

Energy Efficiency Optimization of Generalized Spatial Modulation with Sub-Connected Hybrid Precoding

Energy efficiency (EE) optimization of millimeter wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is emerging as an important challenge for the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems. However, the power of radio frequency (RF) chains increases sharply due to the high carrier frequency in mm-Wave massive MIMO systems. To overcome this issue, a new energy efficiency optimization solution is proposed based on the structure of the generalized spatial modulation (GSM) and sub-connected hybrid precoding (HP). Moreover, the computation power of mm-Wave massive MIMO systems is considered for optimizing the EE. Simulation results indicate that the EE of the GSM-HP scheme outperforms the full digital precoding (FDP) scheme in the mm-Wave massive MIMO scene, and 88\% computation power can be saved by the proposed GSM-HP scheme.

Vehicles to Pedestrians Signal Transmissions Based on Cloud Computing

Collisions between vehicles and pedestrians usually result in the fatality to the vulnerable road users (VRUs). Thus, new technologies are needed to be developed for protecting the VRUs. Based on the high density of pedestrians and limited computing capability of base stations, in this paper the cloud computing technologies are adopted to handle the huge amounts of safety-critical messages. Moreover, the wireless multi-hop backhaul technology is adopted to overcome the bottlenecks of limited transmission capability and queueing delay of the transmitted safety-critical messages between base stations and clouds. Based on the multi-hop wireless transmission scheme, the signal transmission success probability and delay between pedestrians and clouds are derived for performance analysis. Furthermore, numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the relationship between the transmission success probability and the received signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) threshold.

Uplinks Analysis and Optimization of Hybrid Vehicular Networks

5G vehicular communication is one of key enablers in next generation intelligent transportation system (ITS), that require ultra-reliable and low latency communication (URLLC). To meet this requirement, a new hybrid vehicular network structure which supports both centralized network structure and distributed structure is proposed in this paper. Based on the proposed network structure, a new vehicular network utility model considering the latency and reliability in vehicular networks is developed based on Euclidean norm theory. Building on the Pareto improvement theory in economics, a vehicular network uplink optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the uplink utility of vehicles on the roads. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the uplink vehicular network utility in vehicular networks to meet the URLLC requirements.

Mobile Collaborative Spectrum Sensing for Heterogeneous Networks: A Bayesian Machine Learning Approach

Spectrum sensing in a large-scale heterogeneous network is very challenging as it usually requires a large number of static secondary users (SUs) to obtain the global spectrum states. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we propose a new framework based on Bayesian machine learning. We exploit the mobility of multiple SUs to simultaneously collect spectrum sensing data, and cooperatively derive the global spectrum states. We first develop a novel non-parametric Bayesian learning model, referred to as beta process sticky hidden Markov model (BP-SHMM), to capture the spatial-temporal correlation in the collected spectrum data, where SHMM models the latent statistical correlation within each mobile SU's time series data, while BP realizes the cooperation among multiple SUs. Bayesian inference is then carried out to automatically infer the heterogeneous spectrum states. Based on the inference results, we also develop a new algorithm with a refinement mechanism to predict the spectrum availability, which enables a newly joining SU to immediately access the unoccupied frequency band without sensing. Simulation results show that the proposed framework can significantly improve spectrum sensing performance compared with the existing spectrum sensing techniques.

Ultra-dense LEO: Integrating Terrestrial-Satellite Networks into 5G and Beyond for Data Offloading

In this paper, we propose a terrestrial-satellite network (TSN) architecture to integrate the ultra-dense low earth orbit (LEO) networks and the terrestrial networks to achieve efficient data offloading. In TSN, each ground user can access the network over C-band via a macro cell, a traditional small cell, or a LEO-backhauled small cell (LSC). Each LSC is then scheduled to upload the received data via multiple satellites over Ka-band. We aim to maximize the sum data rate and the number of accessed users while satisfying the varying backhaul capacity constraints jointly determined by the LEO satellite based backhaul links. The optimization problem is then decomposed into two closely connected subproblems and solved by our proposed matching algorithms. Simulation results show that the integrated network significantly outperforms the non-integrated ones in terms of the sum data rate. The influence of the traffic load and LEO constellation on the system performance is also discussed.
