Spatio-Temporal-Frequency Graph Attention Convolutional Network for Aircraft Recognition Based on Heterogeneous Radar Network

This paper proposes a knowledge-and-data-driven graph neural network-based collaboration learning model for reliable aircraft recognition in a heterogeneous radar network. The aircraft recognizability analysis shows that: (1) the semantic feature of an aircraft is motion patterns driven by the kinetic characteristics, and (2) the grammatical features contained in the radar cross-section (RCS) signals present spatial-temporal-frequency (STF) diversity decided by both the electromagnetic radiation shape and motion pattern of the aircraft. Then a STF graph attention convolutional network (STFGACN) is developed to distill semantic features from the RCS signals received by the heterogeneous radar network. Extensive experiment results verify that the STFGACN outperforms the baseline methods in terms of detection accuracy, and ablation experiments are carried out to further show that the expansion of the information dimension can gain considerable benefits to perform robustly in the low signal-to-noise ratio region.

Proximal Policy Optimization-based Transmit Beamforming and Phase-shift Design in an IRS-aided ISAC System for the THz Band

In this paper, an IRS-aided integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system operating in the terahertz (THz) band is proposed to maximize the system capacity. Transmit beamforming and phase-shift design are transformed into a universal optimization problem with ergodic constraints. Then the joint optimization of transmit beamforming and phase-shift design is achieved by gradient-based, primal-dual proximal policy optimization (PPO) in the multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario. Specifically, the actor part generates continuous transmit beamforming and the critic part takes charge of discrete phase shift design. Based on the MISO scenario, we investigate a distributed PPO (DPPO) framework with the concept of multi-threading learning in the multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenario. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the primal-dual PPO algorithm and its multi-threading version in terms of transmit beamforming and phase-shift design.

Reconfigurable MIMO towards Electro-magnetic Information Theory: Capacity Maximization Pattern Design

In this paper, we focus on the pattern reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output (PR-MIMO), a technique that has the potential to bridge the gap between electro-magnetics and communications towards the emerging Electro-magnetic Information Theory (EIT). Specifically, we focus on the pattern design problem aimed at maximizing the channel capacity for reconfigurable MIMO communication systems, where we firstly introduce the matrix representation of PR-MIMO and further formulate a pattern design problem. We decompose the pattern design into two steps, i.e., the correlation modification process to optimize the correlation structure of the channel, followed by the power allocation process to improve the channel quality based on the optimized channel structure. For the correlation modification process, we propose a sequential optimization framework with eigenvalue decomposition to obtain near-optimal solutions. For the power allocation process, we provide a closed-form power allocation scheme to redistribute the transmission power among the modified subchannels. Numerical results show that the proposed pattern design scheme offers significant improvements over legacy MIMO systems, which motivates the application of PR-MIMO in wireless communication systems.

Weighted Sum Age of Information Minimization in Wireless Networks with Aerial IRS

In this letter, we analyze a terrestrial wireless communication network assisted by an aerial intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). We consider a packet scheduling problem at the ground base station (BS) aimed at improving the information freshness by selecting packets based on their AoI. To further improve the communication quality, the trajectory of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which carries the IRS is optimized with joint active and passive beamforming design. To solve the formulated non-convex problem, we propose an iterative alternating optimization problem based on a successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm. The simulation results shows significant performance improvement in terms of weighted sum AoI, and the SCA solution converges quickly with low computational complexity.

Predictive Beamforming for Integrated Sensing and Communication in Vehicular Networks: A Deep Learning Approach

The implementation of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) highly depends on the effective beamforming design exploiting accurate instantaneous channel state information (ICSI). However, channel tracking in ISAC requires large amount of training overhead and prohibitively large computational complexity. To address this problem, in this paper, we focus on ISAC-assisted vehicular networks and exploit a deep learning approach to implicitly learn the features of historical channels and directly predict the beamforming matrix for the next time slot to maximize the average achievable sum-rate of system, thus bypassing the need of explicit channel tracking for reducing the system signaling overhead. To this end, a general sum-rate maximization problem with Cramer-Rao lower bounds-based sensing constraints is first formulated for the considered ISAC system. Then, a historical channels-based convolutional long short-term memory network is designed for predictive beamforming that can exploit the spatial and temporal dependencies of communication channels to further improve the learning performance. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed method can satisfy the requirement of sensing performance, while its achievable sum-rate can approach the upper bound obtained by a genie-aided scheme with perfect ICSI available.

Full-Dimensional Rate Enhancement for UAV-Enabled Communications via Intelligent Omni-Surface

This paper investigates the achievable rate maximization problem of a downlink unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication system aided by an intelligent omni-surface (IOS). Different from the state-of-the-art reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that only reflects incident signals, the IOS can simultaneously reflect and transmit the signals, thereby providing full-dimensional rate enhancement. To tackle such a problem, we formulate it by jointly optimizing the IOS's phase shift and the UAV trajectory. Although it is difficult to solve it optimally due to its non-convexity, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that the IOS-assisted UAV communications can achieve more significant improvement in achievable rates than other benchmark schemes.

Exploration of the Doping Effect in the Thiolate-protected Gold Nanoclusters: DFT Simulations of H2S-nanoalloy Complexes

The atomically precise method has become an important technique to adjust the core of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters to improve physical and chemical properties. But the doping effect on the structural stability has not been systematically summarized. In this work, the H2S-nanoalloy molecules with different doping metal atoms has been investigated to elucidate the impact of the dopant on the structures. With DFT simulation results, the zinc group atoms as dopants may be influenced by surrounded gold atoms and the binding of the thiolate units are enhanced. The simulated zinc group data when combined to the gold group and plantinum group data can be summarized in the perspective of balance between the ligand-core binding and core cohesive energies. Most of dopants drive the modeled nanoclusters away from the balance especially when the metal atom replaced the gold atom in gold-sulfur bindings. But when cores of the nanoclusters are dominated by gold atoms, the dopants may achieve "saturation" such that the balance in the doped clusters may be corrected. This work provide a simple profile to understand the internal shift of the structure introduced by the atomically precise method.

Density Evolution Analysis of the Iterative Joint Ordered-Statistics Decoding for NOMA

In this paper, we develop a density evolution (DE) framework for analyzing the iterative joint decoding (JD) for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, where the ordered-statistics decoding (OSD) is applied to decode short block codes. We first investigate the density-transform feature of the soft-output OSD (SOSD), by deriving the density of the extrinsic log-likelihood ratio (LLR) with known densities of the priori LLR. Then, we represent the OSD-based JD by bipartite graphs (BGs), and develop the DE framework by characterizing the density-transform features of nodes over the BG. Numerical examples show that the proposed DE framework accurately tracks the evolution of LLRs during the iterative decoding, especially at moderate-to-high SNRs. Based on the DE framework, we further analyze the BER performance of the OSD-based JD, and the convergence points of the two-user and equal-power systems.

NOMA Joint Decoding based on Soft-Output Ordered-Statistics Decoder for Short Block Codes

In this paper, we design the joint decoding (JD) of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems employing short block length codes. We first proposed a low-complexity soft-output ordered-statistics decoding (LC-SOSD) based on a decoding stopping condition, derived from approximations of the a-posterior probabilities of codeword estimates. Simulation results show that LC-SOSD has the similar mutual information transform property to the original SOSD with a significantly reduced complexity. Then, based on the analysis, an efficient JD receiver which combines the parallel interference cancellation (PIC) and the proposed LC-SOSD is developed for NOMA systems. Two novel techniques, namely decoding switch (DS) and decoding combiner (DC), are introduced to accelerate the convergence speed. Simulation results show that the proposed receiver can achieve a lower bit-error rate (BER) compared to the successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding over the additive-white-Gaussian-noise (AWGN) and fading channel, with a lower complexity in terms of the number of decoding iterations.

Linear-Equation Ordered-Statistics Decoding

In this paper, we propose a new linear-equation ordered-statistics decoding (LE-OSD). Unlike the OSD, LE-OSD uses high reliable parity bits rather than information bits to recover the codeword estimates, which is equivalent to solving a system of linear equations (SLE). Only test error patterns (TEPs) that create feasible SLEs, referred to as the valid TEPs, are used to obtain different codeword estimates. We introduce several constraints on the Hamming weight of TEPs to limit the overall decoding complexity. Furthermore, we analyze the block error rate (BLER) and the computational complexity of the proposed approach. It is shown that LE-OSD has a similar performance as OSD in terms of BLER, which can asymptotically approach Maximum-likelihood (ML) performance with proper parameter selections. Simulation results demonstrate that the LE-OSD has a significantly reduced complexity compared to OSD, especially for low-rate codes, that usually require high decoding order in OSD. Nevertheless, the complexity reduction can also be observed for high-rate codes. In addition, we further improve LE-OSD by applying the decoding stopping condition and the TEP discarding condition. As shown by simulations, the improved LE-OSD has a considerably reduced complexity while maintaining the BLER performance, compared to the latest OSD approach from literature.

Analysis and Design of Analog Fountain Codes for Short Packet Communications

In this paper, we focus on the design and analysis of the Analog Fountain Code (AFC) for short packet communications. We first propose a density evolution (DE) based framework, which tracks the evolution of the probability density function of the messages exchanged between variable and check nodes of AFC in the belief propagation decoder. Using the proposed DE framework, we formulate an optimisation problem to find the optimal AFC code parameters, including the weight-set, which minimises the bit error rate at a given signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Our results show the superiority of our AFC code design compared to existing designs of AFC in the literature and thus the validity of the proposed DE framework in the asymptotically long block length regime. We then focus on selecting the precoder to improve the performance of AFC at short block lengths. Simulation results show that lower precode rates obtain better realised rates over a wide SNR range for short information block lengths. We also discuss the complexity of the AFC decoder and propose a threshold-based decoder to reduce the complexity.

Analysis and Optimization of HARQ for URLLC

In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) technique in providing high-reliability and low-latency in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime in a single user uplink scenario. We characterize the packet error rate (PER), throughput, and delay performance of chase combining HARQ (CC-HARQ) and incremental redundancy HARQ (IR-HARQ) in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channel with $m$ retransmissions. Furthermore, we consider a quasi-static fading channel model, which is more accurate than the over-simplified i.i.d. block fading or same channel assumption over consecutive packets. We use finite state Markov model under the FBL regime to model correlative fading. Numerical results present interesting insight into the reliability-latency trade-off of HARQ. Furthermore, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the throughput performance of IR-HARQ by reducing excessive retransmission overhead for a target packet error performance under different SNRs, Doppler frequencies, and rate regimes.

Remote State Estimation with Smart Sensors over Markov Fading Channels

We consider a fundamental remote state estimation problem of discrete-time linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. A smart sensor forwards its local state estimate to a remote estimator over a time-correlated $M$-state Markov fading channel, where the packet drop probability is time-varying and depends on the current fading channel state. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for mean-square stability of the remote estimation error covariance as $ρ^2(\mathbf{A})ρ(\mathbf{DM})<1$, where $ρ(\cdot)$ denotes the spectral radius, $\mathbf{A}$ is the state transition matrix of the LTI system, $\mathbf{D}$ is a diagonal matrix containing the packet drop probabilities in different channel states, and $\mathbf{M}$ is the transition probability matrix of the Markov channel states. To derive this result, we propose a novel estimation-cycle based approach, and provide new element-wise bounds of matrix powers. The stability condition is verified by numerical results, and is shown more effective than existing sufficient conditions in the literature. We observe that the stability region in terms of the packet drop probabilities in different channel states can either be convex or concave depending on the transition probability matrix $\mathbf{M}$. Our numerical results suggest that the stability conditions for remote estimation may coincide for setups with a smart sensor and with a conventional one (which sends raw measurements to the remote estimator), though the smart sensor setup achieves a better estimation performance.

Over-the-Air Computation via Broadband Channels

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) has been recognized as a low-latency solution for wireless sensor data fusion, where multiple sensors send their measurement signals to a receiver simultaneously for computation. Most existing work only considered performing AirComp over a single frequency channel. However, for a sensor network with a massive number of nodes, a single frequency channel may not be sufficient to accommodate the large number of sensors, and the AirComp performance will be very limited. So it is highly desirable to have more frequency channels for large-scale AirComp systems to benefit from multi-channel diversity. In this letter, we propose an $M$-frequency AirComp system, where each sensor selects a subset of the $M$ frequencies and broadcasts its signal over these channels under a certain power constraint. We derive the optimal sensors' transmission and receiver's signal processing methods separately, and develop an algorithm for joint design to achieve the best AirComp performance. Numerical results show that increasing one frequency channel can improve the AirComp performance by threefold compared to the single-frequency case.

Anytime Control under Practical Communication Model

We investigate a novel anytime control algorithm for wireless networked control with random dropouts. The controller computes sequences of tentative future control commands using time-varying (Markovian) computational resources. The sensor-controller and controller-actuator channel states are spatial- and time-correlated, and are modeled as a multi-state Markov process. To compensate for the effect of packet dropouts, a dual-buffer mechanism is proposed. We develop a novel cycle-cost-based approach to obtain the stability conditions on the nonlinear plant, controller, network and computational resources.

Non-orthogonal HARQ for URLLC Design and Analysis

The fifth-generation (5G) of mobile standards is expected to provide ultra-reliability and low-latency communications (URLLC) for various applications and services, such as online gaming, wireless industrial control, augmented reality, and self driving cars. Meeting the contradictory requirements of URLLC, i.e., ultra-reliability and low-latency, is considered to be very challenging, especially in bandwidth-limited scenarios. Most communication strategies rely on hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) to improve reliability at the expense of increased packet latency due to the retransmission of failing packets. To guarantee high-reliability and very low latency simultaneously, we enhance HARQ retransmission mechanism to achieve reliability with guaranteed packet level latency and in-time delivery. The proposed non-orthogonal HARQ (N-HARQ) utilizes non-orthogonal sharing of time slots for conducting retransmission. The reliability and delay analysis of the proposed N-HARQ in the finite block length (FBL) regime shows very high performance gain in packet delivery delay over conventional HARQ in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels. We also propose an optimization framework to further enhance the performance of N-HARQ for single and multiple retransmission cases.

A Revisit to Ordered Statistics Decoding: Distance Distribution and Decoding Rules

This paper revisits the ordered statistics decoding (OSD). It provides a comprehensive analysis of the OSD algorithm by characterizing the statistical properties, evolution and the distribution of the Hamming distance and weighted Hamming distance from codeword estimates to the received sequence in the reprocessing stages of the OSD algorithm. We prove that the Hamming distance and weighted Hamming distance distributions can be characterized as mixture models capturing the decoding error probability and code weight enumerator. Simulation and numerical results show that our proposed statistical approaches can accurately describe the distance distributions. Based on these distributions and with the aim to reduce the decoding complexity, several techniques, including stopping rules and discarding rules, are proposed, and their decoding error performance and complexity are accordingly analyzed. Simulation results for decoding various eBCH codes demonstrate that the proposed techniques can significantly reduce the decoding complexity with a negligible loss in the decoding error performance.
