Giant intrinsic dichroism in \b{eta}-Ga2O3 enables filter-free, high-fidelity polarization division multiplexing

Conventional polarization detection relies on external filters, which incur significant efficiency loss and polarization crosstalk, especially in the deep ultraviolet band where subwavelength nanofabrication is challenging. Here, we report that monoclinic \b{eta}-Ga2O3 exhibits intrinsic giant polarization dichroism, allowing near-ideal polarization photodetection without external optical elements and coherent polarization-division multiplexing (PDM) capability. The giant dichroism originates from the crystallographic symmetry-driven selectivity of optical transitions, which, combined with a large valence band splitting, results in vastly distinct absorption for orthogonal polarizations. A theoretical analysis of the transition selection rules in \b{eta}-Ga2O3 reveals only the E//c-polarized vb1-to-conduction band transition is activated, within the 245-258 nm spectral window. An admirable polarization ratio surpassing 500 and a polarization crosstalk ratio below 0.2% is hence achieved. The polarization-sensitive photodetector exhibits a high responsivity of 73 A/W and fast response (20 ms). Furthermore, we showcase its practical utility in PDM free-space communication, successfully decoding encoded optical signals, and demonstrate its capability for high-fidelity Stokes vector retrieval. The intrinsic anisotropy of \b{eta}-Ga2O3, dictated by its crystal symmetry, lays the groundwork for filter-free, high-fidelity polarization polarimetry. This work further paves the way for a general design principle in next-generation optoelectronics that harness polarization transition selection rules.

Does Principal Component Analysis Preserve the Sparsity in Sparse Weak Factor Models?

This paper studies the principal component (PC) method-based estimation of weak factor models with sparse loadings. We uncover an intrinsic near-sparsity preservation property for the PC estimators of loadings, which comes from the approximately upper triangular (block) structure of the rotation matrix. It implies an asymmetric relationship among factors: the rotated loadings for a stronger factor can be contaminated by those from a weaker one, but the loadings for a weaker factor is almost free of the impact of those from a stronger one. More importantly, the finding implies that there is no need to use complicated penalties to sparsify the loading estimators. Instead, we adopt a simple screening method to recover the sparsity and construct estimators for various factor strengths. In addition, for sparse weak factor models, we provide a singular value thresholding-based approach to determine the number of factors and establish uniform convergence rates for PC estimators, which complement Bai and Ng (2023). The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed estimators are investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. The application to the FRED-QD dataset reveals the underlying factor strengths and loading sparsity as well as their dynamic features.

A One-Covariate-at-a-Time Method for Nonparametric Additive Models

This paper proposes a one-covariate-at-a-time multiple testing (OCMT) approach to choose significant variables in high-dimensional nonparametric additive regression models. Similarly to Chudik, Kapetanios and Pesaran (2018), we consider the statistical significance of individual nonparametric additive components one at a time and take into account the multiple testing nature of the problem. One-stage and multiple-stage procedures are both considered. The former works well in terms of the true positive rate only if the marginal effects of all signals are strong enough; the latter helps to pick up hidden signals that have weak marginal effects. Simulations demonstrate the good finite sample performance of the proposed procedures. As an empirical application, we use the OCMT procedure on a dataset we extracted from the Longitudinal Survey on Rural Urban Migration in China. We find that our procedure works well in terms of the out-of-sample forecast root mean square errors, compared with competing methods.

Secure Multigroup Multicast Communication Systems via Intelligent Reflecting Surface

This paper considers a secure multigroup multicast multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system aided by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Specifically, we aim to minimize the transmit power at the Alice via jointly optimizing the transmit beamformer, AN vector and phase shifts at the IRS subject to the secrecy rate constraints as well as the unit modulus constraints of IRS phase shifts. However, the optimization problem is non-convex and directly solving it is intractable. To tackle the optimization problem, we first transform it into a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) problem, and then alternately update the transmit beamformer and AN matrix as well as the phase shifts at the IRS. In order to reduce the high computational complexity, we further propose a low-complexity algorithm based on second-order cone programming (SOCP). We decouple the optimization problem into two sub-problems and optimize the transmit beamformer, AN vector and the phase shifts alternately by solving two corresponding SOCP sub-problem. Simulation results show that the proposed SDR and SOCP schemes require half or less transmit power than the scheme without IRS, which demonstrates the advantages of introducing IRS and the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

AQPDCITY Dataset: Picture-Based PM Monitoring in the Urban Area of Big Cities

Since Particulate Matters (PMs) are closely related to people's living and health, it has become one of the most important indicator of air quality monitoring around the world. But the existing sensor-based methods for PM monitoring have remarkable disadvantages, such as low-density monitoring stations and high-requirement monitoring conditions. It is highly desired to devise a method that can obtain the PM concentration at any location for the following air quality control in time. The prior works indicate that the PM concentration can be monitored by using ubiquitous photos. To further investigate such issue, we gathered 1,500 photos in big cities to establish a new AQPDCITY dataset. Experiments conducted to check nine state-of-the-art methods on this dataset show that the performance of those above methods perform poorly in the AQPDCITY dataset.

AQPDBJUT Dataset: Picture-Based PM Monitoring in the Campus of BJUT

Ensuring the students in good physical levels is imperative for their future health. In recent years, the continually growing concentration of Particulate Matter (PM) has done increasingly serious harm to student health. Hence, it is highly required to prevent and control PM concentrations in the campus. As the source of PM prevention and control, developing a good model for PM monitoring is extremely urgent and has posed a big challenge. It has been found in prior works that photobased methods are available for PM monitoring. To verify the effectiveness of existing PM monitoring methods in the campus, we establish a new dataset which includes 1,500 photos collected in the Beijing University of Technology. Experiments show that stated-of-the-art methods are far from ideal for PM monitoring in the campus.

A low-energy compact Shanghai-Wuhan electron beam ion trap for extraction of highly charged ions

A low-energy, compact and superconducting electron beam ion trap (the Shanghai-Wuhan EBIT or SW-EBIT) for extraction of highly charged ions is presented. The magnetic field in the central drift tube of the SW-EBIT is approximately 0.21 T produced by a pair of high-temperature superconducting coils. The electron-beam energy of the SW-EBIT is in the range of 30-4000 eV, and the maximum electron-beam current is up to 9 mA. Acting as a source of highly charged ions, the ion-beam optics for extraction is integrated, including an ion extractor and an einzel lens. A Wien filter is then used to measure the charge-state distribution of the extracted ions. In this work, the tungsten ions below the charge state of 15 have been produced, extracted, and analyzed. The charge-state distributions and spectra in the range of 530-580 nm of tungsten ions have been measured simultaneously with the electron-beam energy of 279 eV and 300 eV, which preliminarily indicates that the 549.9 nm line comes from $W^{14+}$.

Flexible transparent high-voltage diodes for energy management in wearable electronics

This work reports flexible fully transparent high-voltage diodes that feature high rectification ratio (Rr 10 8) and high breakdown voltage (Vb 150 V) simultaneously, combined with their applications as building blocks of energy management systems in wearable electronics where triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are used as power source. Both experimental results and technology computer aided design (TCAD) simulations suggest that Rr and Vb can be modulated by the offset length in an opposite tendency. The low reverse leakage current (fA/MICRON) guarantees an ultra-low power consumption in standby mode, which is a core issue in wearable device applications. Besides the unprecedented electrical performance, the diodes exhibit good mechanical robustness with minimal degradation throughout the strain and fatigue tests. By incorporating these high-voltage diodes into half-wave and full-wave rectifier circuits, the high alternating current (AC) output voltage of TENGs is successfully rectified into direct current (DC) voltage and charged into supercapacitors (SCs), indicating their high integration and compatibility with TENGs, and thus their promising applications in various wearable electronic systems.
