A local Sobolev inequality on Ricci flow and its applications

In this article, we prove a local Sobolev inequality for complete Ricci flows. Our main result is that the local $ν$-functional of a disk on a Ricci flow depends only on the Nash entropy based at the center of the disk, and consequently depends only on the volume of the disk. Furthermore, we introduce some applications of this local Sobolev inequality. These applications reveal the way in which the local geometry evolves along Ricci flow. In particular, we show that several classical theorems related to Perelman's monotonicity formula can be derived from our results.

On Ricci flows with closed and smooth tangent flows

In this paper, we consider Ricci flows admitting closed and smooth tangent flows in the sense of Bamler [Bam20c]. The tangent flow in question can be either a tangent flow at infinity for an ancient Ricci flow, or a tangent flow at a singular point for a Ricci flow developing a finite-time singularity. Among other things, we prove: (1) that in these cases the tangent flow must be unique, (2) that if a Ricci flow with finite-time singularity has a closed singularity model, then the singularity is of Type I and the singularity model is the tangent flow at the singular point; this answers a question proposed in [CCGGIIKLLN10], (3) a dichotomy theorem that characterizes ancient Ricci flows admitting a closed and smooth backward sequential limit.

An optimal volume growth estimate for noncollapsed steady gradient Ricci solitons

In this paper, we prove a volume growth estimate for steady gradient Ricci solitons with bounded Nash entropy. We show that such a steady gradient Ricci soliton has volume growth rate no smaller than $r^{\frac{n+1}{2}}.$ This result not only improves the estimate in [CMZ21b, Theorem 1.3], but also is optimal since the Bryant soliton and Appleton's solitons [Ap17] have exactly this growth rate.

No breather theorems for the mean curvature flow

In this article we study the breathers of the mean curvature flow in the Euclidean space. A breather is a solution to the mean curvature flow which repeats itself up to isometry and scaling once in a while. We prove several no breather theorems in the noncompact category, that is, under certain conditions, a breather of the mean curvature flow must be a solitonic solution (self-shrinker, self-expander, or translator).

Perelman's entropy on ancient Ricci flows

In [ZY2], the second author proved Perelman's assertion, namely, for an ancient Ricci flow with bounded and nonnegative curvature operator, bounded entropy is equivalent to noncollapsing on all scales. In this paper, we continue this discussion. It turns out that the curvature operator nonnegativity is not a necessary condition, and we need only to assume a consequence of Hamilton's trace Harnack. Furthermore, we show that this condition holds for steady Ricci solitons with nonnegative Ricci curvature.

A uniform Sobolev inequality for ancient Ricci flows with bounded Nash entropy

This note is a continuation of [CMZ21]. We shall show that an ancient Ricci flow with uniformly bounded Nash entropy must also have uniformly bounded $ν$-functional. Consequently, on such an ancient solution there are uniform logarithmic Sobolev and Sobolev inequalities. We emphasize that the main theorem in this paper is true so long as the theory in [Bam20c] is valid, and in particular, when the underlying manifold is closed.

Ancient Ricci flows with asymptotic solitons

We study ancient Ricci flows which admit asymptotic solitons in the sense of Perelman. We prove that the asymptotic solitons must coincide with Bamler's tangent flows at infinity. Furthermore, we show that Perelman's $ν$-functional is uniformly bounded on such ancient solutions; this fact leads to logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and Sobolev inequalities. Lastly, as an important tool for the proofs of the above results, we also show that, for a complete Ricci flow with bounded curvature, the bound of the Nash entropy depends only on the local geometry around an $H_n$-center of its base point.

A no expanding breather theorem for noncompact Ricci flows

In this note we show that, under certain curvature positivity conditions (the weak $\operatorname{PIC}-2$ condition or the nonnegative bisectional curvature condition), a complete and noncompact expanding breather of the Ricci flow is also an expanding gradient Ricci soliton. This is the first no expanding breather theorem in the noncompact category.

On the noncollapsedness of positively curved Type I ancient Ricci flows

In this article, we study complete Type I ancient Ricci flows with positive sectional curvature. Our main results are as follows: in the complete and noncompact case, all such ancient solutions must be noncollapsed on all scales; in the closed case, if the dimension is even, then all such ancient solutions must be noncollapsed on all scales. This furthermore gives a complete classification for three-dimensional noncompact Type I ancient solutions without assuming the noncollapsing condition.

Manifolds with positive curvature operator and strictly convex bounday

In [AMW], it is proved that if a compact $3$-manifold has positive Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary, then this manifold is diffeomorphic to the standard $3$-dimensional Euclidean disk. In this paper, we prove its higher-dimensional generalization: if a compact $n$-manifold has positive curvature operator and strictly convex boundary, then this manifold is diffeomorphic to the standard $n$-dimensional Euclidean disk.

Perelman-type no breather theorem for noncompact Ricci flows

In this paper, we first show that a complete shrinking breather with Ricci curvature bounded from below must be a shrinking gradient Ricci soliton. This result has several applications. First, we can classify all complete $3$-dimensional shrinking breathers. Second, we can show that every complete shrinking Ricci soliton with Ricci curvature bounded from below must be gradient -- a generalization of Naber's result. Furthermore, we develop a general condition for the existence of the asymptotic shrinking gradient Ricci soliton, which hopefully will contribute to the study of ancient solutions.

Ancient solutions to the Ricci flow in higher dimensions

In this paper, we study $κ$-noncollapsed ancient solutions to the Ricci flow with nonnegative curvature operator in higher dimensions. We impose one further assumption: one of the asymptotic shrinking gradient Ricci solitons is the standard cylinder $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R}$. By making use of the properties of such ancient solutions, we generalize part one of Brendle \cite{brendle2018ancient} to higher dimensions, that is, every noncompact $κ$-noncollapsed rotationally symmetric ancient solution to the Ricci flow with bounded positive curvature operator must be the Bryant soliton.

A note on Perelman's no shrinking breather theorem

As an application of his entropy formula, Perelman proved that every compact shrinking breather is a shrinking gradient Ricci soliton. We give a proof for the complete noncompact case by using Perelman's $\mathcal{L}$-geometry. Our proof follows the argument in Lu and Zheng of constructing an ancient solution, and removes a technical assumption made by them.

On three-dimensional Type I $κ$-solutions to the Ricci flow

In this short note, we prove that the only simply connected noncompact three-dimensional Type I $κ$-solution to the Ricci flow is the shrinking cylinder. This work can be regarded as a generalization of Cao and Chow, and a complement of Ding and Ni. Up to this point, three-dimensional $κ$-solutions of Type I are completely classified, and it remains interesting to work further towards Perelman's assertion, that the only remaining possibility of three-dimensional noncompact $κ$-solution is the Bryant soliton. Brendle is working to that end. The classification of three-dimensional $κ$-solution is of importance to the study of four-dimensional Ricci flows, because of a possible dimension-reduction procedure.

The rigidity of $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{R}$ under ancient Ricci flow

In this paper we generalize the neck-stability theorem of Kleiner-Lott to a special class of four-dimensional nonnegatively curved Type I $κ$-solutions, namely, those whose asymptotic shrinkers are the standard cylinder $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{R}$. We use this stability result to prove a rigidity theorem: if a four-dimensional Type I $κ$-solution with nonnegative curvature operator has the standard cylinder $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{R}$ as its asymptotic shrinker, then it is exactly the cylinder with its standard shrinking metric.

Three-dimensional noncompact $κ$-solutions that are Type I forward and backward

As indicated by the third author in [19], there is a gap in the previous version of this paper by the first two authors [5]. We provide in this version an argument to fix the aforementioned gap. The main proposition, whose proof uses Perelman's techniques, is implied by Ding [9] and is covered by [19]. Our approach, however, is different from theirs. In addition, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for a three-dimensional $κ$-solution to form a forward singularity. We hope that this condition is helpful in the classification of all three-dimensional $κ$-solutions. Up to now, the only main progress on such a classification, as conjectured by Perelman, is by Brendle [2].

A compactness theorem for four-dimensional shrinking gradient Ricci solitons

Haslhofer and Müller proved a compactness Theorem for four-dimensional shrinking gradient Ricci solitons, with the only assumption being that the entropy is uniformly bounded from below. However, the limit in their result could possibly be an orbifold Ricci shrinker. In this paper we prove a compactness theorem for noncompact four-dimensional shrinking gradient Ricci solitons with a topological restriction and a noncollapsing assumption, that is, we consider Ricci shrinkers that can be embedded in a closed four-manifold with vanishing second homology group over every field and are strongly $κ$-noncollapsed with respect to a universal $κ$. In particular, we do not need any curvature assumption and the limit is still a smooth nonflat shrinking gradient Ricci soliton.
