Amusing Permutation Representations of Group Extensions

Semi-direct products of finite groups have permutation representations that are constructed from the permutation representations of their constituents. One can envision these in a metaphoric sense in which a rope is made from a bundle of threads. In this way, subgroups and quotients are easily visualized. The general idea is applied to the finite subgroups of the special unitary group of $(2\times 2)$-matrices. Amusing diagrams are developed that describe the unit quaternions, the binary tetrahedral, octahedral, and icosahedral group as well as the dicyclic groups. In all cases, the quotients as subgroups of the permutation group are readily apparent. These permutation representations lead to injective homomorphisms into semi-direct products.

Non-orientable surfaces in 4-dimensional space

This article is a survey article that gives detailed constructions and illustrations of some of the standard examples of non-orientable surfaces that are embedded and immersed in 4-dimensional space. The illustrations depend upon their 3-dimensional projections, and indeed the illustrations here depend upon a further projection into the plane of the page. The concepts used to develop the illustrations will be developed herein.

Basket, flat plumbing and flat plumbing basket numbers of links

We define the basket number, the flat plumbing number and the flat plumbing basket number of a link. Then we provide some upperbounds for these plumbing numbers by using Seifert's algorithm. We study the relation between these plumbing numbers and the genera of links.

Coloring link diagrams by Alexander quandles

In this paper, we study the colorability of link diagrams by the Alexander quandles. We show that if the reduced Alexander polynomial $Δ_{L}(t)$ is vanishing, then $L$ admits a non-trivial coloring by any non-trivial Alexander quandle $Q$, and that if $Δ_{L}(t)=1$, then $L$ admits only the trivial coloring by any Alexander quandle $Q$, also show that if $Δ_{L}(t)\not=0, 1$, then $L$ admits a non-trivial coloring by the Alexander quandle $Λ/(Δ_{L}(t))$.

The spread and extreme terms of Jones polynomials

We adapt Thistlethwaite's alternating tangle decomposition of a knot diagram to identify the potential extreme terms in its bracket polynomial, and give a simple combinatorial calculation for their coefficients, based on the intersection graph of certain chord diagrams.
