Analysis of gradient flow for computing defocusing action ground states of rotating nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations

This work focuses on the numerical computation of defocusing action ground states for rotating nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations (RNLS) using a direct gradient flow (DGF) method. We address theoretical gaps in the existing literature concerning the stability and convergence of this DGF scheme. Firstly, we prove the unconditional stability of the DGF scheme, demonstrating that the action functional is monotonically non-increasing along the discrete flow for arbitrary time step sizes. Secondly, we establish a rigorous convergence analysis, proving global convergence under minor assumptions and local exponential convergence to the action ground state under a reasonable non-degeneracy condition. The analysis relies on the uniform boundedness of sublevel sets of the action functional and introduces a tailored $H^1$-distance between phase-shift equivalence classes to handle complex-valued ground states with quantized vortices. A novel analytical framework is also developed to establish the exponential convergence rate. Numerical experiments are presented to validate the theoretical findings, demonstrating both the global migration towards a neighborhood of the ground state and subsequent exponential convergence.

An efficient compact splitting Fourier spectral methods for computing the dynamics of rotating spin-orbit coupled spin-2 Bose-Einstein condenstates

This paper investigates the dynamics of spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with rotation and spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In order to better simulate the dynamics, we present an efficient high-order compact splitting Fourier spectral method. This method splits the Hamiltonian into a linear part, which consists of the Laplace, rotation and SOC terms, and a nonlinear part that includes all the remaining terms. The wave function is well approximated by the Fourier spectral method and is numerically accessed with discrete Fast Fourier transform (FFT). For linear subproblem, the handling of rotation term and SOC term poses a major challenge. Using a function mapping based on rotation, we can integrate the linear subproblem exactly and explicitly. This mapping we propose not only helps eliminate the rotation term, but also prevents the SOC term from evolving into a time-dependent form. The nonlinear subproblem is integrated analytically in physical space. Such "compact" splitting involves only two operators and facilitates the design of high-order splitting schemes. Our method is spectrally accurate in space and high order in time. It is efficient, explicit, unconditionally stable and simple to implement. In addition, we derive some dynamical properties and carry out a systematic study, including accuracy and efficiency tests, dynamical property verification, the SOC effects and dynamics of vortex lattice.

Mathematical and numerical study on the ground states of rotating spin-orbit coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

In this article, we study mathematically and numerically the ground states of three-component rotating spin-orbit coupled (SOC) spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates modeled by the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (CGPEs). Firstly, we rigorously prove existence result of the ground state and derive some analytical properties, including the virial identity and negativity of SOC energy. Secondly, we propose an efficient and accurate preconditioned nonlinear conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithm to compute the ground states. We truncate the whole space into a bounded rectangular domain and readily apply the Fourier spectral method to approximate the wave function. The PCG method is successfully adapted with appropriate modifications to the adaptive step size control strategy for the one-parameter energy minimization problem and to the choice of preconditioners, achieving great performance in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Lastly, we carry out extensive numerical experiments to verify the existence and property results of the ground states, confirm the spatial spectral accuracy by traversing the most commonly-used initial guesses for each component thanks to its great efficiency, which is also attributed to a utilization of cascadic multigrid and discrete Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Moreover, we investigate the effects of local interaction, rotation and spin-orbit coupling and external trapping potential on the ground state, and unveil some interesting physical phenomena, such as giant vortex and U-shape vortex line.

A normalized gradient flow method for computing ground states of spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose and analyze an efficient and accurate numerical method for computing ground states of spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by using the normalized gradient flow (NGF). In order to successfully extend the NGF to spin-2 BECs which has five components in the vector wave function but with only two physical constraints on total mass conservation and magnetization conservation, two important techniques are introduced for designing the proposed numerical method. The first one is to systematically investigate the ground state structure and property of spin-2 BECs within a spatially uniform system, which can be used on how to properly choose initial data in the NGF for computing ground states of spin-2 BECs. The second one is to introduce three additional projection conditions based on the relations between the chemical potentials, together with the two existing physical constraints, such that the five projection parameters used in the projection step of the NGF can be uniquely determined. Then a backward-forward Euler finite difference method is adapted to discretize the NGF. We prove rigorously that there exists a unique solution of the nonlinear system for determining the five projection parameters in the full discretization of the NGF under a mild condition on the time step size. Extensive numerical results on ground states of spin-2 BECs with different types of phases and under different potentials are reported to show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed numerical method and to demonstrate several interesting physical phenomena on ground states of spin-2 BECs.

Convergence analysis of a spectral-Galerkin-type search extension method for finding multiple solutions to semilinear problems

In this paper, we develop an efficient spectral-Galerkin-type search extension method (SGSEM) for finding multiple solutions to semilinear elliptic boundary value problems. This method constructs effective initial data for multiple solutions based on the linear combinations of some eigenfunctions of the corresponding linear eigenvalue problem, and thus takes full advantage of the traditional search extension method in constructing initials for multiple solutions. Meanwhile, it possesses a low computational cost and high accuracy due to the employment of an interpolated coefficient Legendre-Galerkin spectral discretization. By applying the Schauder's fixed point theorem and other technical strategies, the existence and spectral convergence of the numerical solution corresponding to a specified true solution are rigorously proved. In addition, the uniqueness of the numerical solution in a sufficiently small neighborhood of each specified true solution is strictly verified. Numerical results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of our algorithm and present different types of multiple solutions.

Computing the action ground state for the rotating nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the computations of the action ground state for a rotating nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It reads as a minimization of the action functional under the Nehari constraint. In the focusing case, we identify an equivalent formulation of the problem which simplifies the constraint. Based on it, we propose a normalized gradient flow method with asymptotic Lagrange multiplier and establish the energy-decaying property. Popular optimization methods are also applied to gain more efficiency. In the defocusing case, we prove that the ground state can be obtained by the unconstrained minimization. Then the direct gradient flow method and unconstrained optimization methods are applied. Numerical experiments show the convergence and accuracy of the proposed methods in both cases, and comparisons on the efficiency are discussed. Finally, the relation between the action and the energy ground states are numerically investigated.

Uniform error bound of an exponential wave integrator for the long-time dynamics of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with wave operator

We establish the uniform error bound of an exponential wave integrator Fourier pseudospectral (EWI-FP) method for the long-time dynamics of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with wave operator (NLSW), in which the strength of the nonlinearity is characterized by $\varepsilon^{2p}$ with $\varepsilon \in (0, 1]$ a dimensionless parameter and $p \in \mathbb{N}^+$. When $0 < \varepsilon \ll 1$, the long-time dynamics of the problem is equivalent to that of the NLSW with $O(1)$-nonlinearity and $O(\varepsilon)$-initial data. The NLSW is numerically solved by the EWI-FP method which combines an exponential wave integrator for temporal discretization with the Fourier pseudospectral method in space. We rigorously establish the uniform $H^1$-error bound of the EWI-FP method at $O(h^{m-1}+\varepsilon^{2p-β}τ^2)$ up to the time at $O(1/\varepsilon^β)$ with $0 \leq β\leq 2p$, the mesh size $h$, time step $τ$ and $m \geq 2$ an integer depending on the regularity of the exact solution. Finally, numerical results are provided to confirm our error estimates of the EWI-FP method and show that the convergence rate is sharp.

A constrained gentlest ascent dynamics and its applications to finding excited states of Bose-Einstein condensates

In this paper, the gentlest ascent dynamics (GAD) developed in [W. E and X. Zhou, Nonlinearity, 24 (2011), pp. 1831--1842] is extended to a constrained gentlest ascent dynamics (CGAD) to find constrained saddle points with any specified Morse indices. It is proved that the linearly stable steady state of the proposed CGAD is exactly a nondegenerate constrained saddle point with a corresponding Morse index. Meanwhile, the locally exponential convergence of an idealized CGAD near nondegenerate constrained saddle points with corresponding indices is also verified. The CGAD is then applied to find excited states of single-component Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) in the order of their Morse indices via computing constrained saddle points of the corresponding Gross--Pitaevskii energy functional under the normalization constraint. In addition, properties of the excited states of BECs in the linear/nonlinear cases are mathematically/numerically studied. Extensive numerical results are reported to show the effectiveness and robustness of our method and demonstrate some interesting physics.

Vortex patterns and the critical rotational frequency in rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Based on the two-dimensional mean-field equations for pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in a rotating frame with both attractive and repulsive dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) as well as arbitrary polarization angle, we study the profiles of the single vortex state and show how the critical rotational frequency change with the s-wave contact interaction strengths, DDI strengths and the polarization angles. In addition, we find numerically that at the `magic angle' $\vartheta=\arccos(\sqrt{3}/3)$, the critical rotational frequency is almost independent of the DDI strength. By numerically solving the dipolar GPE at high rotational speed, we identify different patterns of vortex lattices which strongly depend on the polarization direction. As a result, we undergo a study of vortex lattice structures for the whole regime of polarization direction and find evidence that the vortex lattice orientation tends to be aligned with the direction of the dipoles.
