Queue-Aware Graph Reinforcement Learning for UAV-ISAC-Assisted Maritime Data Collection

This paper studies high-altitude platform (HAP)-assisted sparse cooperative integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) for UAV-enabled ocean monitoring. A fleet of rotary-wing UAVs senses drifting buoys, collects their monitoring data, and reports local posterior estimates to a HAP that performs fusion and sparse cooperation control. The model explicitly accounts for a spatially correlated sea-patch field, patch-aware buoy dynamics, RCS- and clutter-aware echo sensing, fused posterior Cramér-Rao bounds (PCRBs), and propulsion-energy-limited UAV mobility. The long-horizon objective is cast as a queue-weighted buffered-collection Markov decision process rather than instantaneous throughput, where each buoy maintains a backlog of buffered observations. The resulting long-horizon design is formulated as a mixed discrete-continuous problem with sensing, communication, mobility, safety, buffered-collection, and onboard-energy constraints. To address the combinatorial association component without replacing learning by a deterministic optimizer, we propose a structured feasible-association graph-MARL framework. A heterogeneous graph encoder produces candidate-edge logits, and a masked sequential b-matching policy samples legal UAV-buoy associations while exactly satisfying UAV-load and buoy-cluster constraints. A MAPPO-style training procedure, an independent queue-state value critic, and a consistency-verification protocol are then specified to support reproducible training. Simulation results on congested maritime scenarios show that the proposed policy improves the cumulative queue-weighted collection utility by about 106\% over the rate-driven deterministic decoder, maintains a large margin across sea-state sweeps and medium-to-heavy traffic loads, and transfers to larger networks without fine-tuning.

Asymmetrical temporal dynamics of edge modes in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice with Kerr nonlinearity

Optical bistability and oscillating phases exist in a Sagnac interferometer and a single ring resonator made of $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinear medium where the refractive indices are modulated by the light intensity due to the Kerr nonlinearity. An array of coupled nonlinear ring resonators behave similarly but with more complexity due to the presence of the additional couplings. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the bifurcation of edge modes which leads to optical bistability in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice with the Kerr nonlinearity. Additionally, we demonstrate periodic and chaotic switching behaviors in an oscillating phase resulting from the coupling between the edge mode and bulk modes with different chiralities, i.e., clockwise and counter-clockwise circulations.

Computation and Privacy Protection for Satellite-Ground Digital Twin Networks

Satellite-ground integrated digital twin networks (SGIDTNs) are regarded as innovative network architectures for reducing network congestion, enabling nearly-instant data mapping from the physical world to digital systems, and offering ubiquitous intelligence services to terrestrial users. However, the challenges, such as the pricing policy, the stochastic task arrivals, the time-varying satellite locations, mutual channel interference, and resource scheduling mechanisms between the users and cloud servers, are critical for improving quality of service in SGIDTNs. Hence, we establish a blockchain-aided Stackelberg game model for maximizing the pricing profits and network throughput in terms of minimizing overhead of privacy protection, thus performing computation offloading, decreasing channel interference, and improving privacy protection. Next, we propose a Lyapunov stability theory-based model-agnostic metalearning aided multi-agent deep federated reinforcement learning (MAML-MADFRL) framework for optimizing the CPU cycle frequency, channel selection, task-offloading decision, block size, and cloud server price, which facilitate the integration of communication, computation, and block resources. Subsequently, the extensive performance analyses show that the proposed MAMLMADFRL algorithm can strengthen the privacy protection via the transaction verification mechanism, approach the optimal time average penalty, and fulfill the long-term average queue size via lower computational complexity. Finally, our simulation results indicate that the proposed MAML-MADFRL learning framework is superior to the existing baseline methods in terms of network throughput, channel interference, cloud server profits, and privacy overhead.

Adversarial Example Devastation and Detection on Speech Recognition System by Adding Random Noise

An automatic speech recognition (ASR) system based on a deep neural network is vulnerable to attack by an adversarial example, especially if the command-dependent ASR fails. A defense method against adversarial examples is proposed to improve the robustness and security of the ASR system. We propose an algorithm of devastation and detection on adversarial examples that can attack current advanced ASR systems. We choose an advanced text- and command-dependent ASR system as our target, generating adversarial examples by an optimization-based attack on text-dependent ASR and the GA-based algorithm on command-dependent ASR. The method is based on input transformation of adversarial examples. Different random intensities and kinds of noise are added to adversarial examples to devastate the perturbation previously added to normal examples. Experimental results show that the method performs well. For the devastation of examples, the original speech similarity after adding noise can reach 99.68%, the similarity of adversarial examples can reach zero, and the detection rate of adversarial examples can reach 94%.

Integrated and Spectrally Selective Thermal Emitters Enabled by Layered Metamaterials

Nanophotonic engineering of light-matter interaction at subwavelength scale allows thermal radiation that is fundamentally different from that of traditional thermal emitters and provides exciting opportunities for various thermal-photonic applications. We propose a new kind of integrated and electrically controlled thermal emitter that exploits layered metamaterials with lithography-free and dielectric/metallic nanolayers. We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the proposed concept can create a strong photonic bandgap in the visible regime and allow small impedance mismatch at the infrared wavelengths, which gives rise to optical features of significantly enhanced emissivity at the broad infrared wavelengths of 1.4-14 um as well as effectively suppressed emissivity in the visible region. The electrically driven metamaterial devices are optically and thermally stable at temperature up to ~800 K with electro-optical conversion efficiency reaching ~30%. We believe that the proposed high efficiency thermal emitters will pave the way towards integrated infrared light source platforms for various thermal-photonic applications and particularly provide a novel alternative for cost-effective, compact, low glare, and energy-efficient infrared heating.

Tailoring Topological Edge States with Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Cavities

The realization of topological edge states (TESs) in photonic systems has provided unprecedented opportunities for manipulating light in novel manners. The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model has recently gained significant attention and has been exploited in a wide range of photonic platforms to create TESs. We develop a photonic topological insulator strategy based on SSH photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. In contrast to the conventional photonic SSH schemes which are based on alternately tuned coupling strength in one-dimensional lattice, our proposal provides higher flexibility and allows tailoring TESs by manipulating mode coupling in a two-dimensional manner. We reveal that the proposed hole-array based nanobeams in a dielectric membrane can selectively tailor single or double TESs in the telecommunication region by controlling the coupling strength of the adjacent SSH nanobeams in both vertical and horizontal directions. Our finding provides an in-depth understanding of the SSH model, and allows an additional degree of freedom in exploiting the SSH model for integrated topological photonic devices with unique properties and functionalities.

Performance evaluation of on-chip wavelength conversion based on InP/In$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$As$_y$P$_{1-y}$ semiconductor waveguide platforms

We propose and design the high confinement InP/In1-xGaxAsyP1-y semiconductor waveguides and report the results of effective wavelength conversion based on this platform. Efficient confinement and mode field area fluctuation at different wavelength is analyzed to achieve the high nonlinear coefficient. The numerical results show that nearly zero phase-mismatch condition can be satisfied through dispersion tailoring of InP/In1-xGaxAsyP1-y waveguides, and the wavelength conversion ranging over 40 nm with the maximum conversion efficiency -26.3 dB is achieved for fixing pump power 100 mW. Meanwhile, the influences of the doping parameter y and pumping wavelength on the bandwidth and conversion efficiency are also discussed and optimized. It is indicated the excellent optical properties of the InP/In1-xGaxAsyP1-y waveguides and pave the way towards direct integration telecom band devices on stand semiconductor platforms.

Topological Insulator Laser Using Valley-Hall Photonic Crystals

Topological photonics has recently been proved a robust framework for manipulating light. Active topological photonic systems, in particular, enable richer fundamental physics by employing nonlinear light-matter interactions, thereby opening a new landscape for applications such as topological lasing. Here we report an all-dielectric topological insulator laser scheme based on semiconductor cavities formed by topologically distinct Kagome photonic crystals. The proposed planar semiconductor Kagome lattice allows broadband edge states below the light line due to photonic valley hall effect in telecommunication region, which provides a new route to retrieve nontrivial photonic topology and to develop integrated topological systems for robust light generation and transport.
