Rank Minimization-based Toeplitz Reconstruction for DoA Estimation Using Coprime Array

In this paper, we address the problem of direction finding using coprime array, which is one of the most preferred sparse array configurations. Motivated by the fact that non-uniform element spacing hinders full utilization of the underlying information in the receive signals, we propose a direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm based on low-rank reconstruction of the Toeplitz covariance matrix. The atomic-norm representation of the measurements from the interpolated virtual array is considered, and the equivalent dual-variable rank minimization problem is formulated and solved using a cyclic optimization approach. The recovered covariance matrix enables the application of conventional subspace-based spectral estimation algorithms, such as MUSIC, to achieve enhanced DoA estimation performance. The estimation performance of the proposed approach, in terms of the degrees-of-freedom and spatial resolution, is examined. We also show the superiority of the proposed method over the competitive approaches in the root-mean-square error sense.

True-data Testbed for 5G/B5G Intelligent Network

Future beyond fifth-generation (B5G) and sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications will shift from facilitating interpersonal communications to supporting Internet of Everything (IoE), where intelligent communications with full integration of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) will play an important role in improving network efficiency and providing high-quality service. As a rapid evolving paradigm, the AI-empowered mobile communications demand large amounts of data acquired from real network environment for systematic test and verification. Hence, we build the world's first true-data testbed for 5G/B5G intelligent network (TTIN), which comprises 5G/B5G on-site experimental networks, data acquisition & data warehouse, and AI engine & network optimization. In the TTIN, true network data acquisition, storage, standardization, and analysis are available, which enable system-level online verification of B5G/6G-orientated key technologies and support data-driven network optimization through the closed-loop control mechanism. This paper elaborates on the system architecture and module design of TTIN. Detailed technical specifications and some of the established use cases are also showcased.

Beamforming Design for Multiuser uRLLC with Finite Blocklength Transmission

Driven by the explosive growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices with stringent requirements on latency and reliability, ultra-reliability and low latency communication (uRLLC) has become one of the three key communication scenarios for the fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G communication systems. In this paper, we focus on the beamforming design problem for the downlink multiuser uRLLC systems. Since the strict demand on the reliability and latency, in general, short packet transmission is a favorable form for uRLLC systems, which indicates the literature Shannon's capacity formula is no longer applicable. With the finite blocklength transmission, the achievable delivery rate is greatly influenced by the reliability and latency. Using the developed achievable delivery rate formula for finite blocklength transmission, we respectively formulate the problems of interest as the weighted sum rate maximization, energy efficiency maximization, and user fairness optimization by considering the maximum allowable transmission power and minimum rate requirement. It's worthy pointing out that this is the first work to design the beamforming vectors for the downlink multiuser uRLLC systems. To address these non-convex problems, some important insights have been discovered by analyzing the function of achievable delivery rate. For example, the minimum rate requirement can be realized by low bounded the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Based on the discovered results, we provide algorithms to optimize the beamforming vectors and power allocation, which are guaranteed to converge to a local optimum solution of the formulated problems with low computational complexity. Our simulation results reveal that our proposed beamforming algorithms outperform the zero-forcing beamforming algorithm with equal power allocation widely used in the existing literatures.

Achievable Rate Region of MISO Interference Channel Aided by Intelligent Reflecting Surface

This paper investigates the achievable rate region of the multiple-input single-output (MISO) interference channel aided by intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). We exploit the the additional design degree of freedom provided by the coordinated IRSs to enhance the desired signal and suppress interference so as to enlarge the achievable rate region of the interference channel. To this end, we jointly optimize the active transmit beamforming at the transmitters and passive reflective beamforming at the IRSs, subject to the constant modulus constraints of reflective beamforming vectors. To address the non-convex optimization problem, we propose an iterative algorithm to optimize the transmit beamforming via second-order cone program (SOCP) and the reflective beamforming via the semi-definite relaxation (SDR). Numerical results demonstrate that the performance of the IRS-aided interference channel with the proposed algorithm can significantly outperform the conventional interference channel without IRS.

BlendMask: Top-Down Meets Bottom-Up for Instance Segmentation

Instance segmentation is one of the fundamental vision tasks. Recently, fully convolutional instance segmentation methods have drawn much attention as they are often simpler and more efficient than two-stage approaches like Mask R-CNN. To date, almost all such approaches fall behind the two-stage Mask R-CNN method in mask precision when models have similar computation complexity, leaving great room for improvement. In this work, we achieve improved mask prediction by effectively combining instance-level information with semantic information with lower-level fine-granularity. Our main contribution is a blender module which draws inspiration from both top-down and bottom-up instance segmentation approaches. The proposed BlendMask can effectively predict dense per-pixel position-sensitive instance features with very few channels, and learn attention maps for each instance with merely one convolution layer, thus being fast in inference. BlendMask can be easily incorporated with the state-of-the-art one-stage detection frameworks and outperforms Mask R-CNN under the same training schedule while being 20% faster. A light-weight version of BlendMask achieves $ 34.2% $ mAP at 25 FPS evaluated on a single 1080Ti GPU card. Because of its simplicity and efficacy, we hope that our BlendMask could serve as a simple yet strong baseline for a wide range of instance-wise prediction tasks. Attention Mechanism Enhanced Kernel Prediction Networks for Denoising of Burst Images

Deep learning based image denoising methods have been extensively investigated. In this paper, attention mechanism enhanced kernel prediction networks (AME-KPNs) are proposed for burst image denoising, in which, nearly cost-free attention modules are adopted to first refine the feature maps and to further make a full use of the inter-frame and intra-frame redundancies within the whole image burst. The proposed AME-KPNs output per-pixel spatially-adaptive kernels, residual maps and corresponding weight maps, in which, the predicted kernels roughly restore clean pixels at their corresponding locations via an adaptive convolution operation, and subsequently, residuals are weighted and summed to compensate the limited receptive field of predicted kernels. Simulations and real-world experiments are conducted to illustrate the robustness of the proposed AME-KPNs in burst image denoising.

Power Efficient IRS-Assisted NOMA

In this paper, we propose a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) transmission scheme, which is assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) consisting of a large number of passive reflecting elements. In the literature, it has been proved that nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can achieve the capacity region when the channels are quasi-degraded. However, in a conventional communication scenario, it is difficult to guarantee the quasi-degradation, because the channels are determined by the propagation environments and cannot be reconfigured. To overcome this difficulty, we focus on an IRS-assisted MISO NOMA system, where the wireless channels can be effectively tuned. We optimize the beamforming vectors and the IRS phase shift matrix for minimizing transmission power. Furthermore, we propose an improved quasi-degradation condition by using IRS, which can ensure that NOMA achieves the capacity region with high possibility. For a comparison, we study zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) as well, where the beamforming vectors and the IRS phase shift matrix are also jointly optimized. Comparing NOMA with ZFBF, it is shown that, with the same IRS phase shift matrix and the improved quasi-degradation condition, NOMA always outperforms ZFBF. At the same time, we identify the condition under which ZFBF outperforms NOMA, which motivates the proposed hybrid NOMA transmission. Simulation results show that the proposed IRS-assisted MISO system outperforms the MISO case without IRS, and the hybrid NOMA transmission scheme always achieves better performance than orthogonal multiple access.

Cache-Enabled Coordinated Mobile Edge Network: Opportunities and Challenges

Cache-enabled coordinated mobile edge network is an emerging network architecture, wherein serving nodes located at the network edge have the capabilities of baseband signal processing and caching files at their local cache. The main goals of such an emerging network architecture are to alleviate the burden on fronthaul links, while achieving low-latency high rate content delivery, say on the order of the millisecond level end-to-end content delivery latency. Consequently, the application of delaysensitive and content-aware has been executed in close proximity to end users. In this article, an outlook of research directions, challenges, and opportunities is provided and discussed in depth. We first introduce the cache-enabled coordinated mobile edge network architecture, and then discuss the key technical challenges and opening research issues that need to be addressed for this architecture. Then, to reduce the delivery latency and the burden on fronthaul links, new cache-enabled physical layer transmission schemes are discussed. Finally, artificial intelligence based cache-enabled communications are discussed as future research directions. Numerical studies show that several gains are achieved by caching popular content at the network edge with proper coordinated transmission schemes.

Energy-Efficient Cooperative Secure Transmission in Multi-UAV Enabled Wireless Networks

This paper investigates a multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enabled cooperative secure transmission scheme in the presence of multiple potential eavesdroppers. Specifically, multiple source UAVs (SUAVs) send confidential information to multiple legitimate ground users and in the meantime multiple jamming UAVs (JUAVs) cooperatively transmit interference signals to multiple eavesdroppers in order to improve the legitimate users' achievable secrecy rate. By taking into account the limited energy budget of UAV, our goal is to maximize the system secrecy energy efficiency (SEE), namely the achievable secrecy rate per energy consumption unit, by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, transmit power and user scheduling under the constraints of UAV mobility as well as the maximum transmit power. The resulting optimization problem is shown to be a non-convex and mixed-integer fractional optimization problem, which is challenging to solve. We decompose the original problem into three sub-problems, and then an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed by leveraging the block coordinate descent and Dinkelbach method in combination with successive convex approximation techniques. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the other benchmarks significantly in terms of the system SEE.

Cloud-Edge Coordinated Processing: Low-Latency Multicasting Transmission

Recently, edge caching and multicasting arise as two promising technologies to support high-data-rate and low-latency delivery in wireless communication networks. In this paper, we design three transmission schemes aiming to minimize the delivery latency for cache-enabled multigroup multicasting networks. In particular, full caching bulk transmission scheme is first designed as a performance benchmark for the ideal situation where the caching capability of each enhanced remote radio head (eRRH) is sufficient large to cache all files. For the practical situation where the caching capability of each eRRH is limited, we further design two transmission schemes, namely partial caching bulk transmission (PCBT) and partial caching pipelined transmission (PCPT) schemes. In the PCBT scheme, eRRHs first fetch the uncached requested files from the baseband unit (BBU) and then all requested files are simultaneously transmitted to the users. In the PCPT scheme, eRRHs first transmit the cached requested files while fetching the uncached requested files from the BBU. Then, the remaining cached requested files and fetched uncached requested files are simultaneously transmitted to the users. The design goal of the three transmission schemes is to minimize the delivery latency, subject to some practical constraints. Efficient algorithms are developed for the low-latency cloud-edge coordinated transmission strategies. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed transmission schemes and show that the PCPT scheme outperforms the PCBT scheme in terms of the delivery latency criterion.

Hybrid Precoder Design for Cache-enabled Millimeter Wave Radio Access Networks

In this paper, we study the design of a hybrid precoder, consisting of an analog and a digital precoder, for the delivery phase of downlink cache-enabled millimeter wave (mmWave) radio access networks (CeMm-RANs). In CeMm-RANs, enhanced remote radio heads (eRRHs), which are equipped with local cache and baseband signal processing capabilities in addition to the basic functionalities of conventional RRHs, are connected to the baseband processing unit via fronthaul links. Two different fronthaul information transfer strategies are considered, namely, hard fronthaul information transfer, where hard information of uncached requested files is transmitted via the fronthaul links to a subset of eRRHs, and soft fronthaul information transfer, where the fronthaul links are used to transmit quantized baseband signals of uncached requested files. The hybrid precoder is optimized for maximization of the minimum user rate under a fronthaul capacity constraint, an eRRH transmit power constraint, and a constant-modulus constraint on the analog precoder. The resulting optimization problem is non-convex, and hence the global optimal solution is difficult to obtain. Therefore, convex approximation methods are employed to tackle the non-convexity of the achievable user rate, the fronthaul capacity constraint, and the constant modulus constraint on the analog precoder. Then, an effective algorithm with provable convergence is developed to solve the approximated optimization problem. Simulation results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms, where fully digital precoding is used as benchmark. The results reveal that except for the case of a large fronthaul link capacity, soft fronthaul information transfer is preferable for CeMm-RANs.

Two-level Transmission Scheme for Cache-enabled Fog Radio Access Networks

In this paper, we investigate the downlink transmission for cache-enabled fog radio access networks aiming at maximizing the delivery rate under the constraints of fronthaul capacity, maximum transmit power, and size of files. To reduce the delivery latency and the burden on fronthaul links and make full use of the local cache and baseband signal processing capabilities of enhanced remote radio heads (eRRHs), a two-level transmission scheme including cache-level and network-level transmission is proposed. In cache-level transmission, only requested files cached at the local cache are transmitted to the corresponding users. The duration of cache-level transmission is the delay caused by the transfer between the baseband unit (BBU) and eRRHs as well as the signal processing at the BBU. The remaining requested files are jointly transmitted to the corresponding users at network-level transmission. For cache-level transmission, a centralized optimization algorithm is firstly presented and then a decentralized optimization algorithm is provided to avoid the exchange of signaling among eRRHs. Meanwhile, another centralized optimization algorithm is presented to tackle the optimization problem for network-level transmission. All presented algorithms are proved to converge to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solutions of the problems. Numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed transmission scheme as well as evaluating the system performance.

An Attention-Based Approach for Single Image Super Resolution

The main challenge of single image super resolution (SISR) is the recovery of high frequency details such as tiny textures. However, most of the state-of-the-art methods lack specific modules to identify high frequency areas, causing the output image to be blurred. We propose an attention-based approach to give a discrimination between texture areas and smooth areas. After the positions of high frequency details are located, high frequency compensation is carried out. This approach can incorporate with previously proposed SISR networks. By providing high frequency enhancement, better performance and visual effect are achieved. We also propose our own SISR network composed of DenseRes blocks. The block provides an effective way to combine the low level features and high level features. Extensive benchmark evaluation shows that our proposed method achieves significant improvement over the state-of-the-art works in SISR.

Energy Optimization for Cellular-Connected Multi-UAV Mobile Edge Computing Systems with Multi-Access Schemes

In this paper, a cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) mobile edge computing system is studied in which the multiple UAVs are served by terrestrial base station (TBS) for computation task offloading. Our goal is to minimize the total UAVs energy consumption, including propulsion energy, computation energy and communication energy, while ensuring that the total number of bits of UAVs are completely computed. For tackling the large amount of bits for computation, we propose a resource partitioning strategy where one portion of tasks is migrated to TBS for computation and the other portion of tasks is locally computed at UAV. For deeply comprehending the impacts of access manners on the system performance, we consider four access schemes in the uplink transmission, i.e., time division multiple access (TDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), One-by-One access and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The problem of jointly optimizing bit allocation, power allocation, resource partitioning as well as UAV trajectory under TBS's energy budget is formulated and tackled by means of successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. The numerical results show that the proposed schemes save much energy compared with benchmark schemes.

Placement Delivery Array Design via Attention-Based Deep Neural Network

A decentralized coded caching scheme has been proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, and has been shown to alleviate the load of networks. Recently, placement delivery array (PDA) was proposed to characterize the coded caching scheme. In this paper, a neural architecture is first proposed to learn the construction of PDAs. Our model solves the problem of variable size PDAs using mechanism of neural attention and reinforcement learning. It differs from the previous attempts in that, instead of using combined optimization algorithms to get PDAs, it uses sequence-to-sequence model to learn construct PDAs. Numerical results are given to demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively implement coded caching. We also show that the complexity of our method to construct PDAs is low.

Cache-Enabled Dynamic Rate Allocation via Deep Self-Transfer Reinforcement Learning

Caching and rate allocation are two promising approaches to support video streaming over wireless network. However, existing rate allocation designs do not fully exploit the advantages of the two approaches. This paper investigates the problem of cache-enabled QoE-driven video rate allocation problem. We establish a mathematical model for this problem, and point out that it is difficult to solve the problem with traditional dynamic programming. Then we propose a deep reinforcement learning approaches to solve it. First, we model the problem as a Markov decision problem. Then we present a deep Q-learning algorithm with a special knowledge transfer process to find out effective allocation policy. Finally, numerical results are given to demonstrate that the proposed solution can effectively maintain high-quality user experience of mobile user moving among small cells. We also investigate the impact of configuration of critical parameters on the performance of our algorithm.

Interleaved Training and Training-Based Transmission Design for Hybrid Massive Antenna Downlink

In this paper, we study the beam-based training design jointly with the transmission design for hybrid massive antenna single-user (SU) and multiple-user (MU) systems where outage probability is adopted as the performance measure. For SU systems, we propose an interleaved training design to concatenate the feedback and training procedures, thus making the training length adaptive to the channel realization. Exact analytical expressions are derived for the average training length and the outage probability of the proposed interleaved training. For MU systems, we propose a joint design for the beam-based interleaved training, beam assignment, and MU data transmissions. Two solutions for the beam assignment are provided with different complexity-performance tradeoff. Analytical results and simulations show that for both SU and MU systems, the proposed joint training and transmission designs achieve the same outage performance as the traditional full-training scheme but with significant saving in the training overhead.

Signal Processing for MIMO-NOMA: Present and Future Challenges

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), as the newest member of the multiple access family, is envisioned to be an essential component of 5G mobile networks. The combination of NOMA and multi-antenna multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technologies exhibits a significant potential in improving spectral efficiency and providing better wireless services to more users. In this article, we introduce the basic concepts of MIMO-NOMA and summarize the key technical problems in MIMO-NOMA systems. Then, we explore the problem formulation, beamforming, user clustering, and power allocation of single/multi-cluster MIMO-NOMA in the literature along with their limitations. Furthermore, we point out an important issue of the stability of successive interference cancellation (SIC) that arises using achievable rates as performance metrics in practical NOMA/MIMO-NOMA systems. Finally, we discuss incorporating NOMA with massive/millimeter wave MIMO, and identify the main challenges and possible future research directions in this area.
