On rational maps from the product of two general curves

This paper treats the dominant rational maps from the product of two very general curves to nonsingular projective surfaces. Combining the result by Bastianelli and Pirola, we prove that the product of two very general curves of genus $g\geq 7$ and $g'\geq 3$ does not admit dominant rational maps of degree $> 1$ if the image surface is non-ruled. We also treat the case of the 2-symmetric product of a curve.

On subfields of the function field of a general surface in ${\mathbb P}^3$

In this paper we study birational immersions from a very general smooth plane curve to a non-rational surface with $p_g=q=0$ to treat dominant rational maps from a very general surface $X$ of degree$\geq 5$ in ${\mathbb P}^3$ to smooth projective surfaces $Y$. Based on the classification theory of algebraic surfaces, Hodge theory, and deformation theory, we prove that there is no dominant rational map from $X$ to $Y$ unless $Y$ is rational or $Y$ is birational to $X$.

Stability of hypersurface sections of quadric threefolds

Let $S$ be a complete intersection of a smooth quadric 3-fold $Q$ and a hypersurface of degree $d$ in ${\mathbb P}^4$. In this paper we analyze GIT stability of $S$ with respect to the natural $G=SO(5, {\mathbb C})$-action. We prove that if $d\ge 4$ and $S$ has at worst semi-log canonical singularities then $S$ is $G$-stable. Also, we prove that if $d\ge 3$ and $S$ has at worst semi-log canonical singularities then $S$ is $G$-semistable.

Birational contraction of genus two tails in the moduli space of genus four curves I

We show that for $α\in (2/3, 7/10)$, the log canonical model $\bar M_4(α)$ of the pair $(\bar M_4, αδ)$ is isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar M_4^{hs}$ of h-semistable curves, and that there is a birational morphism $Ξ: \bar M_4^{hs} \to \bar M_4(2/3)$ that contracts the locus of curves $C_1\cup_p C_2$ consisting of genus two curves meeting in a node $p$ such that $p$ is a Weierstrass point of $C_1$ or $C_2$. To obtain this morphism, we construct a compact moduli space $\bar M_{2,1}^{hs}$ of pointed genus two curves that have nodes, ordinary cusps and tacnodes as singularity, and prove that it is isomorphic to Rulla's flip constructed in his thesis.

Simply connected surfaces of general type in positive characteristic via deformation theory

Algebraically simply connected surfaces of general type with p_g=q=0 and 1\le K^2\le 4 in positive characteristic (with one exception in K^2=4) are presented by using a Q-Gorenstein smoothing of two-dimensional toric singularities, a generalization of Lee-Park's construction in the field of complex numbers to the positive characteristic case, and Grothendieck's specialization theorem for the fundamental group.

Slopes of smooth curves on Fano manifolds

Ross and Thomas introduced the concept of slope stability to study K-stability, which has conjectural relation with the existence of constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. This paper presents a study of slope stability of Fano manifolds of dimension $n\geq 3$ with respect to smooth curves. The question turns out to be easy for curves of genus $\geq 1$ and the interest lies in the case of smooth rational curves. Our main result classifies completely the cases when a polarized Fano manifold $(X, -K_X)$ is not slope stable with respect to a smooth curve. Our result also states that a Fano threefold $X$ with Picard number 1 is slope stable with respect to every smooth curve unless $X$ is the projective space.

Complex structure on the rational blowdown of sections in E(4)

We show that there is a complex structure on the symplectic 4-manifold $W_{4, k}$ obtained from the elliptic surface E(4) by rationally blowing down $k$ sections for $2\le k\le 9$. And we interpret it via ${\mathbb Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing. This answers affirmatively to a question raised by R. Gompf.

A construction of Horikawa surface via Q-Gorenstein smoothings

In this article we prove that Fintushel-Stern's construction of Horikawa surface, which is obtained from an elliptic surface via a rational blow-down surgery in smooth category, can be performed in complex category. The main technique involved is Q-Gorenstein smoothings.

Log minimal model program for the moduli space of stable curves of genus three

In this paper, we completely work out the log minimal model program for the moduli space of stable curves of genus three. We employ a rational multiple $αδ$ of the divisor $δ$ of singular curves as the boundary divisor, construct the log canonical model for the pair $(\bar{\mathcal M}_3, αδ)$ using geometric invariant theory as we vary $α$ from one to zero, and give a modular interpretation of each log canonical model and the birational maps between them. By using the modular description, we are able to identify all but one log canonical models with existing compactifications of $M_3$, some new and others classical, while the exception gives a new modular compactification of $M_3$.

Rational curves on blowing-ups of projective spaces

We prove the irredcibility (and the rational connectedness) of the moduli spaces of (free) morphisms from a projective line to a successive blowing-up of a product of projective spaces if a suitable numerical condition on morphisms is provided (and also if all centers of the blowing-up are rationally connected).
