ODMA-based MIMO Massive Unsourced Random Access with Soft-Output Polar Codes

This paper investigates the design of the on-off division multiple access (ODMA) transmission scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) massive unsourced random access (URA) systems with soft-output (SO) polar codes. First, a three-segment pilot-uncoupled coding scheme is introduced under the ODMA framework, which reduces the coding rate of the data segment without increasing the transmission overhead, improving the overall system performance. Building upon this architecture, a hierarchical pattern detection framework is developed. Specifically, a coarse-grained candidate set of transmission patterns is first identified through correlation operations. Based on this, a message-passing (MP)-based pattern detection algorithm is developed to iteratively estimate the posterior probabilities of transmission patterns, followed by the \textit{maximum a posteriori} (MAP) estimation to obtain the precise pattern detection result. Furthermore, a joint pattern detection and data decoding algorithm based on the bit-wise SO information of polar decoder is investigated, where the posterior probability information provided by the polar decoder is exploited to refine the pattern detection and contribute to an improved accuracy. In addition, by leveraging bit-wise SO information of the successive cancellation list polar decoder, an MP-based iterative decoding algorithm is developed to significantly enhance the decoding performance. The proposed scheme simultaneously exploits the transmission gain of uncoupled-ODMA framework, the coding gain of polar codes in the short-blocklength regime, and the iterative decoding gain enabled by SO information, while the computational complexity is significantly reduced through the hierarchical detection framework. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves strong robustness ...

Loss-Resilient Wireless Video Token Communication over Block Fading Channels

Video token communication represents video content as discrete tokens that differ in their importance to reconstruction and exhibit temporal dependencies. When these tokens are packetized for wireless transmission, block fading can cause multiple important or correlated tokens to be lost together, severely degrading video reconstruction. To address this issue, we propose a loss-resilient wireless video token communication (WVTC) framework. WVTC evaluates token importance from the intrinsic predictive structure of video tokens, assigning high priority to structural I-tokens and measuring P-token importance by temporal neighborhood novelty. A shuffled mixed I/P-token packetization scheme disperses structural anchors and correlated temporal regions across packets. Using only current block channel state information, an online scheduler jointly considers packet importance density, MCS-dependent decoding reliability, block capacity, and importance concentration when allocating packets to fading blocks. At the receiver, a fine-tuned detokenizer reconstructs missing content from surviving tokens without retransmission. Numerical results demonstrate improved perceptual quality and more graceful degradation under increasing packet error rates.

Joint Optimization for RIS-Assisted Wireless Communications: From Physical and Electromagnetic Perspectives

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned to be a disruptive wireless communication technique that is capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we study a free-space RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system in far-field operation. To maximize the received power from the physical and electromagnetic nature point of view, a comprehensive optimization, including beamforming of the transmitter, phase shifts of the RIS, orientation and position of the RIS is formulated and addressed. After exploiting the property of line-of-sight (LoS) links, we derive closed-form solutions of beamforming and phase shifts. For the non-trivial RIS position optimization problem in arbitrary three-dimensional space, a dimensional-reducing theory is proved. The simulation results show that the proposed closed-form beamforming and phase shifts approach the upper bound of the received power. The robustness of our proposed solutions in terms of the perturbation is also verified. Moreover, the RIS significantly enhances the performance of the mmWave/THz communication system.

Media Meets Communication in 6G: Fundamentals, Key Technologies, and Applications

The rapid advancement of sixth-generation (6G) networks is accelerating the convergence of media intelligence and communication intelligence, driving media communication beyond conventional bit-level delivery toward intelligent, semantic-aware, and generative paradigms. Emerging media services require not only high data rates and low latency, but also semantic awareness, perceptual quality assurance, adaptive resource orchestration, trustworthy content processing, and personalized media generation. Meanwhile, media technologies are evolving from handcrafted signal processing and conventional coding toward artificial intelligence (AI)-driven representation learning, content understanding, and generative reconstruction. Motivated by these trends, this paper presents a systematic survey of media communication technologies for 6G vision communication by revisiting the evolution of communication and media technologies and clarifying the intrinsic relationship between media content processing and wireless transmission. We introduce a unified framework consisting of four key dimensions: AI-driven media technologies, media-aware wireless transmission, large model-enabled media communication, and intelligent network infrastructures. Specifically, AI-driven media technologies encompass media coding, content understanding, quality assessment, security and compliance detection, and AIGC-enabled media generation, while media-aware wireless transmission is examined from three complementary perspectives: semantic joint source-channel optimization, which jointly encodes task-relevant semantic information; source-aware transmission optimization, which leverages media characteristics for channel adaptation, prediction, and compensation; and channel-aware source optimization, which adapts media coding and reconstruction based on real-time channel conditions.

On the Gaussian-Quadratic Rate-Distortion Function for Vector Sources with Individual Distortion Constraints

This paper investigates the Gaussian-quadratic lossy compression with arbitrary source length under individual distortion constraints. The rate-distortion function (RDF) is lower-bounded by a Hadamard inequality-based rate, which is tight if and only if the semidefinite condition (SDC) holds. Otherwise, this bound becomes loose, and analytical results are lacking. Moreover, the fundamental quantitative relationship between source correlations and the RDF remains incomplete. In this paper, we provide new theoretical results under different source covariance matrices and distortion constraints. First, under arbitrary covariance and distortion constraints, we obtain the spectral properties of the optimal source reconstruction achieving the RDF, and a stronger scalar inequality version of the SDC. We propose a class of source covariance matrices based on hierarchical correlations and show that studying the two-type correlation (2-TC) model is sufficient to establish the analytical foundation for the broader class. Under this covariance, we obtain the RDF with source correlations explicitly incorporated when the SDC holds, and analyze the SDC from the perspectives of distortion constraints and source correlations. Next, under the 2-TC covariance and two-type distortion (2-TD) constraints, we establish the complete RDFs over seven regions on a distortion plane, with the optimal distortion (rate) allocations determined in each region. It is revealed that the essence of pursuing the complete RDF lies in thoroughly analyzing the correlations between the optimal distortions. Finally, under isotropic correlation and identical constraints, we provide the per-component compression rate and show that exploiting correlations can significantly reduce compression costs.

Large Language Model-Enhanced Multi-hop Parallel Image Semantic Communication

This paper proposes a large language model-enhanced multi-hop parallel image semantic communication (LLM-MHPSC) framework to mitigate distortion accumulation in multi-hop wireless image transmission. Unlike conventional single-hop semantic communication schemes, LLM-MHPSC deploys an extra residual compensation link at each hop to counteract accumulated distortions. To minimize additional bandwidth overhead, a coarse-to-fine residual compression scheme is designed by integrating a deep learning-based compressor with adaptive arithmetic coding (AAC). Furthermore, a large language model-based residual transmission optimizer (LLM-RTO) is developed to accurately estimate residual distributions and enable channel state and hop-aware rate adjustment, thereby improving residual compression efficiency under varying channel and hop conditions. An adaptive hop selection strategy is also proposed to activate the residual link on demand, striking a balance between transmission performance and computational cost. Experimental results show that LLM-MHPSC outperforms state-of-the-art semantic communication and traditional schemes, realizing robust image transmission with a marginal increase in bandwidth. This framework provides a flexible and effective solution for extending semantic communication to practical multi-hop application scenarios.

Towards World Model-Empowered Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Decision for Complex Unmanned Systems

Complex unmanned systems comprising satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), and quadruped robots are increasingly deployed to perform large-scale sensing and autonomous operations. We propose a world model-empowered sensing, communication, decision (SCD) integration framework for complex unmanned communication networks. The proposed architecture establishes a closed-loop system where a unified world model jointly optimizes time-sensitive sensing, wireless communication, and intelligent decision-making. To regulate sensing freshness and reduce redundant data generation, we propose a time-sensitive age of information (AoI)-driven sensing mechanism that dynamically schedules sensing updates based on task urgency and predictive uncertainty. Furthermore, a predictive world model is developed to jointly represent environmental dynamics, wireless channel evolution, and agent mobility within a hybrid deterministic-stochastic latent space. This enables proactive communication scheduling and decision evaluation via latent rollout. To support large-scale heterogeneous coordination, a multi-granularity knowledge graph is further designed to organize cross-population relationships among satellites, UAVs, UGVs, and ground agents. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed SCD framework outperforms conventional systems, highlighting the significant potential of world models for supporting unmanned systems.

Semantic Noise Aided Secure Image Transmission over MIMO Fading Channels

Existing semantic communications have exhibited satisfactory performance in many tasks, but secure image transmission remains insufficiently explored. We propose a novel secure image semantic communication (SISC) framework over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels. To ensure high-quality image reconstruction for the legitimate semantic user (SU) and simultaneously interfere with the eavesdropper (Eve), we design a semantic noise generation (SNG) network. This network generates a beneficial semantic noise map based on both the source features and the SU channel state information (CSI). An efficient channel estimation enhanced network is incorporated to obtain the accurate CSI and enhance the system performance. Furthermore, to improve the secure image reconstruction quality, we develop an efficient transceiver beamformer optimization algorithm, where the formulated problem is solved using the constrained stochastic successive convex approximation method. In the proposed SISC framework, semantic noise generation and beamforming optimization work together to ensure secure and high-quality image transmission. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed semantic noise aided transmission scheme effectively protects image information from leakage to Eve while maintaining high-fidelity image reconstruction at SU.

Polar Decoding Tree Pruning Based on Soft Output Extraction

Although the successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding of polar codes exhibits excellent performance, it retains many decoding paths in the list with negligible contribution to the final output, resulting in high sorting and computational complexity. In this letter, we propose a novel pruning strategy to mitigate the decoding complexity. By leveraging the blockwise soft output extraction process of soft-output SCL and soft-output fast SCL decoding, we provide an accurate approximation of the probability that a decoding path is correct, and thus accordingly prune the paths failing to meet a pre-defined reliability threshold. The complexity reduction achieved by the proposed soft-output-based pruned SCL (SOP-SCL) decoder and its fast version, SOP-FSCL decoder, is significant, without any compromise in error-correction performance. Meanwhile, they also prove to be more efficient than state-of-the-art pruned polar decoders.

Multi-view imaging in networked sensing systems: A covariance-based approach

This paper considers multi-view imaging in a sixth-generation (6G) integrated sensing and communication network, which consists of a transmit base-station (BS), multiple receive BSs connected to a central processing unit (CPU), and multiple extended targets. Our goal is to devise an effective multi-view imaging technique that can jointly leverage the targets' echo signals at all the receive BSs to precisely construct the image of these targets. To achieve this goal, we propose a two-phase approach. In Phase I, each receive BS recovers an individual image based on the sample covariance matrix of its received signals. Specifically, we propose a novel covariance-based imaging framework to jointly estimate effective scattering intensity and grid positions, which reduces the number of estimated parameters leveraging channel statistical properties and allows grid adjustment to conform to target geometry. In Phase II, the CPU fuses the individual images of all the receivers to construct a high-quality image of all the targets. Specifically, we design edge-preserving natural neighbor interpolation (EP-NNI) to map individual heterogeneous images onto common and finer grids, and then propose a joint optimization framework to estimate fused scattering intensity and BS fields of view. Extensive numerical results show that the proposed scheme significantly enhances imaging performance, facilitating high-quality environment reconstruction for future 6G networks.

Node-Based Soft-Output Fast Successive Cancellation List Decoding of Polar Codes

The soft-output successive cancellation list (SO-SCL) decoder provides a methodology for estimating the a-posteriori probability log-likelihood ratios by only leveraging the conventional SCL decoder of polar codes. However, the sequential decoding nature of SCL introduces high decoding latency to SO-SCL. In this paper, we incorporate node-based fast decoding into the SO-SCL framework. After addressing the challenge of soft output extraction in special node decoding, we proposed the soft-output fast SCL (SO-FSCL) decoding algorithm, along with its log-domain implementation and hardware-friendly version. The proposed SO-FSCL decoder can be regarded as an add-on extension to FSCL decoder, enabling us to autonomously choose whether to output only hard decisions like FSCL or to provide additional soft outputs. Latency and complexity analyses demonstrate that SO-FSCL can significantly reduce, for example, decoding time steps by 81.8\% (with unlimited resources), the number of additions by 41.3\%, and the number of comparisons by 46.4\%. Meanwhile, simulation results indicate that SO-FSCL delivers almost the same soft-output performance as SO-SCL, outperforming other soft-output polar decoders, especially in scenarios involving iterative decoding.

Contextual Wireless Video Semantic Communication in MIMO-OFDM Systems

This paper proposes a MIMO-OFDM-based context video semantic transmission framework, namely M-CVST, for robust video communication over multi-path multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. It introduces a context-subcarrier correlation map that aligns video feature context with groups of MIMO subcarriers. To leverage the time-correlated nature of multi-path channels, a recursive subcarrier sampling method paired with time-correlated reference embedding is designed, enabling the use of previously sampled MIMO subcarrier CSI to enhance channel state awareness in the entropy coding model. Numerical results verify the superiority of proposed M-CVST over MIMO multi-path channels compared to other semantic schemes and traditional separated schemes.

MD-AirComp+: Adaptive Quantization for Blind Massive Digital Over-the-Air Computation

Recent research has shown that unsourced massive access (UMA) is naturally well-suited for over-the-air computation (AirComp), as it does not require knowledge of each individual signal, as demonstrated by the massive digital AirComp (MD-AirComp) scheme proposed in prior work. The MD-AirComp scheme has proven effective in federated edge learning and is highly compatible with current digital wireless networks. However, it depends on channel pre-equalization, which may amplify computation errors in the presence of channel estimation inaccuracies, thus limiting its practical use. In this paper, we propose a blind MD-AirComp+ scheme, which takes advantage of the channel hardening effect in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We provide an upper bound on the computation mean square error, analyze the trade-off between computation accuracy and communication overhead, and determine the optimal quantization level. Additionally, we introduce a deep unfolding algorithm to reduce the computational complexity of solving the underdetermined detection problem formulated as a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator optimization problem. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed MD-AirComp+ framework, the optimal quantization selection strategy, and the low-complexity detection algorithm.

Joint Lossy Compression for a Vector Gaussian Source under Individual Distortion Criteria

This paper investigates the joint compression problem of a vector Gaussian source, where an individual distortion constraint is imposed on each source component. It is known that the rate-distortion function (RDF) is lower-bounded by the rate derived from the Hadamard inequality, which becomes exact when the semidefinite condition (SDC) holds. However, existing works often overlook the case where the SDC is not satisfied. Moreover, even when the SDC holds, a quantitative characterization of how correlations enable more efficient compression is lacking. In this work, we refine the results when the SDC is satisfied and derive new theoretical results when the SDC is not satisfied, thereby establishing theoretical limits for practical source compression with correlations. Specifically, we examine the properties of optimal source reconstruction and provide upper bounds on its dimension, showing that lower-dimensional reconstructions are essential for efficient compression when the SDC does not hold. Within a scalable two-type correlation (2TC) covariance framework, we prove that the probability of satisfying the SDC decays exponentially with source length, emphasizing the importance of exploring theoretical limits when the SDC is not met. Additional, we determine the component-wise correlations that a vector source should possess to achieve the Hadamard compression rate, revealing the trade-off between distortion constraints and correlations. More importantly, by deriving an explicit RDF with correlations incorporated, we quantitatively characterize the gain in compression efficiency achieved by fully leveraging source correlations.

FDD CSI Feedback under Finite Downlink Training: A Rate-Distortion Perspective

This paper establishes the theoretical limits of channel state information (CSI) feedback in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) multi-antenna orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems under finite-length training with Gaussian pilots. The user employs minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) channel estimation followed by asymptotically optimal uplink feedback. Specifically, we derive a general rate-distortion function (RDF) of the overall CSI feedback system. We then provide both non-asymptotic bounds and asymptotic scaling for the RDF under arbitrary downlink signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) when the number of training symbols exceeds the antenna dimension. A key observation is that, with sufficient training, the overall RDF converges to the direct RDF corresponding to the case where the user has full access to the downlink CSI. More importantly, we demonstrate that even at a fixed downlink SNR, the convergence rate is inversely proportional to the training length. The simulation results show that our bounds are tight, and under very limited training, the deviation between the overall RDF and the direct RDF is substantial.

Multi-hop Parallel Image Semantic Communication for Distortion Accumulation Mitigation

Existing semantic communication schemes primarily focus on single-hop scenarios, overlooking the challenges of multi-hop wireless image transmission. As semantic communication is inherently lossy, distortion accumulates over multiple hops, leading to significant performance degradation. To address this, we propose the multi-hop parallel image semantic communication (MHPSC) framework, which introduces a parallel residual compensation link at each hop against distortion accumulation. To minimize the associated transmission bandwidth overhead, a coarse-to-fine residual compression scheme is designed. A deep learning-based residual compressor first condenses the residuals, followed by the adaptive arithmetic coding (AAC) for further compression. A residual distribution estimation module predicts the prior distribution for the AAC to achieve fine compression performances. This approach ensures robust multi-hop image transmission with only a minor increase in transmission bandwidth. Experimental results confirm that MHPSC outperforms both existing semantic communication and traditional separated coding schemes.

WVSC: Wireless Video Semantic Communication with Multi-frame Compensation

Existing wireless video transmission schemes directly conduct video coding in pixel level, while neglecting the inner semantics contained in videos. In this paper, we propose a wireless video semantic communication framework, abbreviated as WVSC, which integrates the idea of semantic communication into wireless video transmission scenarios. WVSC first encodes original video frames as semantic frames and then conducts video coding based on such compact representations, enabling the video coding in semantic level rather than pixel level. Moreover, to further reduce the communication overhead, a reference semantic frame is introduced to substitute motion vectors of each frame in common video coding methods. At the receiver, multi-frame compensation (MFC) is proposed to produce compensated current semantic frame with a multi-frame fusion attention module. With both the reference frame transmission and MFC, the bandwidth efficiency improves with satisfying video transmission performance. Experimental results verify the performance gain of WVSC over other DL-based methods e.g. DVSC about 1 dB and traditional schemes about 2 dB in terms of PSNR.

Finite-Blocklength Information Theory

Traditional asymptotic information-theoretic studies of the fundamental limits of wireless communication systems primarily rely on some ideal assumptions, such as infinite blocklength and vanishing error probability. While these assumptions enable tractable mathematical characterizations, they fail to capture the stringent requirements of some emerging next-generation wireless applications, such as ultra-reliable low latency communication and ultra-massive machine type communication, in which it is required to support a much wider range of features including short-packet communication, extremely low latency, and/or low energy consumption. To better support such applications, it is important to consider finite-blocklength information theory. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the advances in this field, followed by a discussion on the open questions. Specifically, we commence with the fundamental limits of source coding in the non-asymptotic regime, with a particular focus on lossless and lossy compression in point-to-point~(P2P) and multiterminal cases. Next, we discuss the fundamental limits of channel coding in P2P channels, multiple access channels, and emerging massive access channels. We further introduce recent advances in joint source and channel coding, highlighting its considerable performance advantage over separate source and channel coding in the non-asymptotic regime. In each part, we review various non-asymptotic achievability bounds, converse bounds, and approximations, as well as key ideas behind them, which are essential for providing engineering insights into the design of future wireless communication systems.
