Nonlinear dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Single-particle dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate has recently been investigated in experiments that explore the physics of Landau-Zener tunneling and of the Zitterbewegung. In this paper, we study the influence of a nonlinearity due to interactions on these dynamics and show that the dispersion relation develops interesting loop strucures. The atoms can move along the nonlinear dispersion curve in the presence of a weak acceleration force and we show that the loops lead to straightforward nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling. However, we find that for the Zitterbewegung, induced by a sudden quench in the spin-orbit coupling parameters, the nonlinear dispersion is irrelevant.

Stabilization of Nonlinear Lattices: A Route to Superfluidity and Hysteresis

The Bloch states of a Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in pure nonlinear lattices (NLs) are dynamically unstable, so that they cannot show superfluidity. We overcome this problem by finding that the two-component BECs in NLs can be stabilized by the coherent linear coupling. Furthermore, in the limit of the strong coherent coupling, the lowest Bloch band in the whole Brillouin zone can be dynamically stable. We also find a hysteretic behavior with loop-like structure in the Bloch band resembling the so-called "swallowtail" loop. The dynamical stabilization and hysteretic behavior can be observed in experiments by current technology.

Superfluidity in the absence of kinetics in spin-orbit-coupled optical lattices

At low temperatures bosons typically condense to minimize their single-particle kinetic energy while interactions stabilize superfluidity. Optical lattices with artificial spin-orbit coupling challenge this paradigm because here kinetic energy can be quenched in an extreme regime where the single-particle band flattens. To probe the fate of superfluidity in the absence of kinetics we construct and numerically solve interaction-only tight-binding models in flat bands. We find that novel superfluid states arise entirely from interactions operating in quenched kinetic energy bands, thus revealing a distinct and unexpected condensation mechanism. Our results have important implications for the identification of quantum condensed phases of ultracold bosons beyond conventional paradigms.

Negative mass hydrodynamics in a Spin-Orbit--Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate

A negative effective mass can be realized in quantum systems by engineering the dispersion relation. A powerful method is provided by spin-orbit coupling, which is currently at the center of intense research efforts. Here we measure an expanding spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate whose dispersion features a region of negative effective mass. We observe a range of dynamical phenomena, including the breaking of parity and of Galilean covariance, dynamical instabilities, and self-trapping. The experimental findings are reproduced by a single-band Gross-Pitaevskii simulation, demonstrating that the emerging features - shockwaves, soliton trains, self-trapping, etc. - originate from a modified dispersion. Our work also sheds new light on related phenomena in optical lattices, where the underlying periodic structure often complicates their interpretation.

Odd-petal states and persistent flows in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the phase diagram of a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a two-dimensional toroidal trap. In the immiscible regime we find an azimuthally periodic density distribution, with the periodicity highly tuneable as a function of the spin-orbit coupling strength and which favours an odd number of petals in each component. This allows for a wide range of states that can be created. We further show that in the miscible regime, both components possess states with persistent flows with a unit winding number difference between them and with the absolute values of these winding numbers depending on the spin-orbit coupling strength. All features of the odd-petal and the persistent flow states can be explained using a simple but effective model.

Spatial non-adiabatic passage using geometric phases

Quantum technologies based on adiabatic techniques can be highly effective, but often at the cost of being very slow. Here we introduce a set of experimentally realistic, non-adiabatic protocols for spatial state preparation, which yield the same fidelity as their adiabatic counterparts, but on fast timescales. In particular, we consider a charged particle in a system of three tunnel-coupled quantum wells, where the presence of a magnetic field can induce a geometric phase during the tunnelling processes. We show that this leads to the appearance of complex tunnelling amplitudes and allows for the implementation of spatial non-adiabatic passage. We demonstrate the ability of such a system to transport a particle between two different wells and to generate a delocalised superposition between the three traps with high fidelity in short times.

Interacting spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit (SO) coupling for spin-1 ultracold atoms opens an interesting avenue for exploring SO-coupling-related physics in large-spin systems, which is generally unattainable in electronic materials. In this paper, we study the effects of interactions between atoms on the ground states and collective excitations of SO-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the presence of a spin-tensor potential. We find that ferromagnetic interaction between atoms can induce a stripe phase exhibiting in-phase or out-of-phase modulating patterns between spin-tensor and zero-spin-component density waves. We characterize the phase transitions between different phases using the spin-tensor density as well as the collective dipole motion of the BEC. We show that there exists a double maxon-roton structure in the Bogoliubov-excitation spectrum, attributed to the three band minima of the SO-coupled spin-1 BEC.

Bright solitons in a 2D spin-orbit-coupled dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We study a two-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive contact interactions by both the variational method and the imaginary time evolution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The dipoles are completely polarized along one direction in the 2D plane so as to provide an effective attractive dipole-dipole interaction. We find two types of solitons as the ground states arising from such attractive interactions: a plane wave soliton with a spatially varying phase and a stripe soliton with a spatially oscillating density for each component. Both types of solitons possess smaller size and higher anisotropy than the soliton without spin-orbit coupling. Finally, we discuss the properties of moving solitons, which are nontrivial because of the violation of Galilean invariance.

Gap Solitons in Spin-Orbit-Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

While different ways to realize spin-orbit coupling in Bose-Einstein condensates exist, not all are currently experimentally implementable. Here we present a detailed study of gap solitons in a Bose- Einstein condensate with experimentally realizable spin-orbit coupling and discuss two cases relating to a spin-dependent parity symmetry. In the parity symmetric case, two families of fundamental gap solitons in second linear energy gap are demonstrated with opposite sign of the parity, with one family having single humped densities and the other double humped ones. In the case of broken parity symmetry, the fundamental modes manifest spin-polarization. Both families possess an opposite sign of the spin-polarization.

Measurement of collective excitations in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

We measure the collective excitation spectrum of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate using Bragg spectroscopy. The spin-orbit coupling is generated by Raman dressing of atomic hyperfine states. When the Raman detuning is reduced, mode softening at a finite momentum is revealed, which provides insight towards a supersolid-like phase transition. We find that for the parameters of our system, this softening stops at a finite excitation gap and is symmetric under a sign change of the Raman detuning. Finally, using a moving barrier that is swept through the BEC, we also show the effect of the collective excitation on the fluid dynamics.

Spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical lattice

The realization of artificial gauge fields and spin-orbit coupling for ultra-cold quantum gases promises new insight into paradigm solid state systems. Here we experimentally probe the dispersion relation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a translating optical lattice by observing its dynamical stability, and develop an effective band structure that provides a theoretical understanding of the locations of the band edges. This system presents exciting new opportunities for engineering condensed-matter analogs using the flexible toolbox of ultra-cold quantum gases.

Dicke-type phase transition in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide a powerful tool to investigate interesting gauge-field related phenomena. We study the ground state properties of such a system and show that it can be mapped to the well-known Dicke model in quantum optics, which describes the interactions between an ensemble of atoms and an optical field. A central prediction of the Dicke model is a quantum phase transition between a superradiant phase and a normal phase. Here we detect this transition in a spin-orbit coupled BEC by measuring various physical quantities across the phase transition. These quantities include the spin polarization, the relative occupation of the nearly degenerate single particle states, the quantity analogous to the photon field occupation, and the period of a collective oscillation (quadrupole mode). The applicability of the Dicke model to spin-orbit coupled BECs may lead to interesting applications in quantum optics and quantum information science.

Phase Winding a Two-Component BEC in an Elongated Trap: Experimental Observation of Moving Magnetic Orders and Dark-bright Solitons

We experimentally investigate the phase winding dynamics of a harmonically trapped two-component BEC subject to microwave induced Rabi oscillations between two pseudospin components. While the single particle dynamics can be explained by mapping the system to a two-component Bose-Hubbard model, nonlinearities due to the interatomic repulsion lead to new effects observed in the experiments: In the presence of a linear magnetic field gradient, a qualitatively stable moving magnetic order that is similar to antiferromagnetic order is observed after critical winding is achieved. We also demonstrate how the phase winding can be used as a new tool to generate copious dark-bright solitons in a two-component BEC, opening the door for new experimental studies of these nonlinear features.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in Spin-Orbit Coupled Optical Lattices: Flat Bands and Superfluidity

Recently spin-orbit (SO) coupled superfluids in free space or harmonic traps have been extensively studied, motivated by the recent experimental realization of SO coupling for Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). However, the rich physics of SO coupled BEC in optical lattices has been largely unexplored. In this paper, we show that in suitable parameter region the lowest Bloch state forms an isolated flat band in a one dimensional (1D) SO coupled optical lattice, which thus provides an experimentally feasible platform for exploring the recently celebrated topological flat band physics in lattice systems. We show that the flat band is preserved even with the mean field interaction in BEC. We investigate the superfluidity of the BEC in SO coupled lattices through dynamical and Landau stability analysis, and show that the BEC is stable on the whole flat band.

Bright solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study bright solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate with a spin-orbit coupling that has been realized experimentally. Both stationary bright solitons and moving bright solitons are found. The stationary bright solitons are the ground states and possess well-defined spin-parity, a symmetry involving both spatial and spin degrees of freedom; these solitons are real valued but not positive definite, and the number of their nodes depends on the strength of spin-orbit coupling. For the moving bright solitons, their shapes are found to change with velocity due to the lack of Galilean invariance in the system.

Signature of Majorana Fermions in Charge Transport in Semiconductor Nanowires

We investigate the charge transport in a semiconductor nanowire that is subject to a perpendicular magnetic field and in partial contact with an \textit{s}-wave superconductor. We find that Majorana fermions, existing at the interface between superconducting and normal sections of the nanowire within certain parameter region, can induce resonant Andreev reflection of electrons at the interface, which yields a zero energy peak in the electrical conductance of the nanowire. The width of the zero energy conductance peak for different experimental parameters is characterized. While the zero energy peak provides a signature for Majorana fermions in one dimensional nanowires, it disappears in a two-dimensional semiconductor thin film with the same experimental setup because of the existence of other edge states in two dimensions. The proposed charge transport experiment may provide a simple and experimentally feasible method for the detection of Majorana fermions in semiconductor nanowires.

Tunable Spin-orbit Coupling and Quantum Phase Transition in a Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the intrinsic interaction between a particle spin and its motion, is responsible for various important phenomena, ranging from atomic fine structure to topological condensed matter physics. The recent experimental breakthrough on the realization of SOC for ultra-cold atoms provides a completely new platform for exploring spin-orbit coupled superfluid physics. However, the SOC strength in the experiment, determined by the applied laser wavelengths, is not tunable. In this Letter, we propose a scheme for tuning the SOC strength through a fast and coherent modulation of the laser intensities. We show that the many-body interaction between atoms, together with the tunable SOC, can drive a \textit{quantum phase transition} (QPT) from spin-balanced to spin-polarized ground states in a harmonic trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). This transition realizes the long-sought QPT in the quantum Dicke model, and may have important applications in quantum optics and quantum information. We characterize the QPT using the periods of collective oscillations (center of mass motion and scissors mode) of the BEC, which show pronounced peaks and damping around the quantum critical point.

Mean-field Dynamics of Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the interaction between the spin and momentum of a quantum particle, is crucial for many important condensed matter phenomena. The recent experimental realization of SOC in neutral bosonic cold atoms provides a new and ideal platform for investigating spin-orbit coupled quantum many-body physics. In this Letter, we derive a generic Gross-Pitaevskii equation as the starting point for the study of many-body dynamics in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that different laser setups for realizing the same SOC may lead to different mean field dynamics. Various ground state phases (stripe, phase separation, etc.) of the condensate are found in different parameter regions. A new oscillation period induced by the SOC, similar to the Zitterbewegung oscillation, is found in the center of mass motion of the condensate.
